EqualLogic PS4000 discs

Hello

We have a SAN EqualLogic PS4000 network for our Veeam backup and the warranty is over. My problem is that a drive has faild and needs to be replaced. The thing is, we have a 'spare' PS4000 that we do use. The question is whether it is possible to use the disks in the SAN spare wheel in that we use for backups? Has anyone tried this before?

Thank you

Magnus

Hello Magnus,

Assuming that the units have identical type discs AND the other Bay is reset, yes you could swap the drives.   If the other Bay is configured, the RAID information on the disk will confuse the table of production thinking there are a number of logical unit that is failing.  So it won't work as a spare.

Kind regards

I have two Dell PowerEdge M610 in a PowerEdge M1000e that my team was given as units of seeds (thanks Dell) and we ended up buying storage, they sent with it, an EqualLogic PS4000.  The representative of Dell came and helped to get the basic running configuration and how iSCSI worked and showed us a doc (the same doc Configuring_VMware_vSphere_Software_iSCSI_with_Dell_EqualLogic_PS_Series_Storage.pdf noted many threads here) on how get v4.1 ESX (i) running with this storage.  We all stood up and running most of the time before he left, but after going on documentation, again, I have seen that we should be able to establish connections mutable and "Round Robin" to improve performance.  As I see so far in the two vSphere Client and in the management of the EqualLogic console console, I get only one per server (as seen on the attached screenshots).  I've been beating my head on this for the last few days trying to get the connections going.  In fact, I've seen it work once but for other reasons, I had to redo the raid on the host computer and reload and have not been able to get it working again... :'-(

  • EqualLogic PS4000 replacement doesn't have a disk with the largest disk

See the attached picture. I use RAID 50 and all disks are now 300 GB except a spare drive which has been replaced in this same situation earlier this year. Now I have a 600 GB drive, is it ok to swap hot who? Or if she breaks up the raid?

  • Dell EqualLogic PS4000 management interface port

The management interface port can be configured as a port of e/s additional iSCSI on the PS4000 series?

The online help in the Workgroup Manager console provides instructions on how to do it, but the checkbox "restrict access to the administration" in the parameters of property intellectual eth2 is grayed out. Also the data sheet for the States of SAN: ' two 2 GbE copper, copper 1 1 10/100 (network management only optionally) by controller.

This option was available that on previous EQL without or is there a way to enable it on the PS4000? Maybe through the CLI.

    It's a single management interface.

In tables PS5x00 and PS6x00 an iSCSI port could be spent to be a single management interface.

  • best method for the implementation of the equallogic line

    Hello

We recently purchased an equallogic ps4000 who will be used mainly for purposes of DR in a branch.

The idea is to have a copy of all critical servers on this group of Branch Office.

My plan was to create a replica of the 'seed' of all servers when the two paintings are at Headquarters (i.e. on the same network). When I then take the painting at the branch there is much less data to be replicated across the WAN. for example

    • Give the 'branch' equallogic iSCSI headquarters subnet address
    • The replication setup (for example, the replica of the seed)
    • Change the IP address of the 'branch' equallogic/group
    • Unplug and take the painting at the branch
    • Resume replication over the Wan

    I was wondering;

    (a) if it is a good plan

    (b) is the best way to do it?

Thanks for any advice on this.

    Huw

Yes, it's a way you can do the initial transfer to the DR group.

You can also read about the Manual Transfer Utility (MTU), the download is on the same page as the Firmware Version you have installed on your berries (on FW download page, find the section titled "EqualLogic Compatibiltiy tools).

In a nut shell, after installation of the MTU, then using the same system, the connection to the Admin group and in the Tools Menu interface (bottom left), select "Manual transfer utility" as follows:

Yes with Dell PS Series, model number is not important.   The version of the firmware is.

  • Move to a different server

We will retire from front-end server Windows 2008 for EqualLogic PS4000 and replace it with server r2 Windows 2012.
New server has been implemented. Can I run HIT on it and comply with the configuration of the old server?
And once ready, not to shut down the old server?

    Hello

Yes, you can move a volume to another server.  However, stop the W2K8 server before connect you to the server of W2K12.  You never want to be accessed at the same time.  This can cause corrupted data.

You can install the SDK of SUCCESS before connect you to the volume.  You'll want to change the existing volume access control so that only the new server will be can visit his profile.

  • Volumes over 2 TB

I have the volume on our EqualLogic PS4000 that holds about 20 vmdk for ESXi enviornment.  I want to increase the capacity of this volume of 2.5 to support future growth.

When I do this in the Group Management Console, I get a warning that says that some operating systems do not support volumes over 2 TB.  The volume contains a combination of Ubuntu and Windows servers and none of the drives are more than 100 GB individually, and they all VMDK located just on the volume.

When I increase the size of the volume, it should not affect the ability of servers to see the volume at right?  Which applies only when I was going to put a system of files directly on the volume (and it is longer than 2 TB)?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

What is important is the operating system that is connecting to the volume.  You run ESXi v5 and v5 VMFS file system?   Older versions of ESX and VMFS v3 have a 2 047 GB limit.

However, rather than keep the extension of a volume, I would suggest creating a new volume.

Mulitple volumes give better performance.   Each volume has a limit negotiated on the number of IOs in circulation that can be treated.  More medium-sized volumes most outstanding IOs can be processed.  In addition, all the virtual machines on a single volume to run into this limit.   In addition, sometimes a node ESX must exclusively a reserve volume.  Meanwhile, only that node can access the volume.  With more volume, IO would continue to be managed on a non-reserved volumes.

Here are a few quick recommended practices for ESX and EQL as well.

Disabling delayed ACK, large receive offload, ensuring you that virtual machines with multiple VMDK/RDM do not share a single virtual SCSI controller.  Each virtual machine can have up to four SCSI controllers.

Solution title HOWTO: disable large receive unloading (LRO) in ESX v4/v5

Details of the solution in VMware, the following command queries the current value of LRO.

    # esxcfg - advcfg - g/Net/TcpipDefLROEnabled

To set to zero (disabled) LRO value:

    # esxcfg - advcfg - s 0/Net/TcpipDefLROEnabled

NOTE: a server restart is required.

  • Best practices for vSphere 5 Networking

    Hi all

    Given the following environment:

    (1) 4 physical servers, each server has 16 (Gigabit) network interface cards will install vSphere 5 std.

    (2) 2 switches with SAN storage battery function

    (3) 2 Equallogic PS4000 SAN (two controllers)

    (4) 2 switches for the traffic of the virtual machine

As for networking, I intend create some vSwitches on each physical server as follows

    1 vSwitch0 - used for iSCSI storage

6 network adapters are associated with IP-hash, multitracks with iSCSI Storage consolidation policy. and storage load balancing is round Rodin (vmware)

(vmware suggests to use 2 cards for 1 traget of IP storage, I'm not sure)

2 vSwitch1 - used for the virtual machine

6 Teamed network adapters for the traffic of the virtual machine, with the hash intellectual property policy

    3 vSwitch2 - management

    2 network cards are associated

    4 vSwitch3 - vMotion

    2 network cards are associated

You would like to give me some suggestions?

Alex, the standard set by the storage and VMware is used by dell for their servers and tested sound on their equipment and the publication of the document, it is recommended...

This sound is the best practice for dell server with this model mentioned in the document to use.

  • Guest VM, or additional hard drives ESX iSCSI initiator?

We'll install Exchange 2010 on a Server 2008 R2 VM... is there disadvantages of adding several hard drives and for dealing with the ESX iSCSI traffic?  Or would it be better to use the initator iSCSI in the VM guest to connect to the San (EqualLogic PS4000)?

If we continue the road of iSCSI initiator that I'll have to do some networking finageling since our iSCSI traffic is spread over a separate... switch then I'll probably have to add a VM network to the virtual switch and add a second NETWORK card to the guest VM... It would be simpler just to add more hard drives, but I don't know what is the (positive or negative) impact it would have on performance.

    Thank you.

    Hello

the difference in performance between a vmdk and a RDM is something that can be ignored safely, there are many autour benchmarks that show how VMDK is basically fast a RDM disk, but you can avoid all the complexities of managing iscsi RDM inside virtual machines by going with vmdk.

Basically, the only need IMHO to use a RDM is if you need to create a Microsoft Cluster inside VMware.

    Ciao,.

  • The correct configuration on the redundancy help

    Hello

We have a VMware ESXi 3 hosts 4.1 with two Equallogic ps4000 infrastructuer, an AIRLOCK and one with SATA drives.

It is connected with 2 switches, where everything is connected, so redundancy "should" work.

On ESXi server, we have 8 network ports, in vCenter, we used 2 NICs for the management and vmotion, 2 for iScsi traffic and 2 for network access VLAN.

Some time ago, one of our switches failed, and all the VM rebooted because they lose the connection, 2-3 minutes later they came back on the use of the other switch, but it should not happen. I did a little research and discovered that perhaps consolidation of NETWORK cards has not been configured no doubt.

On vSwitch 2 where will my Iscsi traffic, I used a VMkernel port on both network adapters, it should work, right? What have I done wrong? Someone has an idea, what configuration should be placed on the consolidation of NETWORK cards to do this work.

After a bit of trouble, I clicked on change properties on vSwitch 2, clicked VMkernel port ISCSi, hget to exepotions political in nic teaming configuration. Failover detection network: Link status notification only, switches: Yes, the failback: No.

When I disconnected the cable, vmwares worked, when I unplugged the swich, RM of vm. I heard when using network cards, should I create the vmkernel ports on this vswitch using redundancy, is this true? I also thought that the ISCSI port group traffic would inherit the rights of the nicteaming, but this happens for some reason any. Someone has an idea of this network which is the best practice, when you configure the redundancy with multiple cards in vCenter?

    Thx for all the help.

Bit of an old thread, but in the possibility it has not been resolved, here's your answer:

With Equallogic units, you will need to configure a vmkernel by physical uplink port.

    1 vSwitch

2 unique physical network (vmnic3, for example vmnic4) cards

    2 vmkernel ports

-vmk1-> override set failover of vmnic3 active and vmnic4 unused

-vmk2-> override unused vmnic4 set failover active and vmnic3

Bind the vmkernel ports to the iscsi hba software and configure storage.  To improve the performance set up frames on all vswitches, switches and vmk.

  • Connection of RDM on Equallogic PS6100 volumes to virtual machines.

    Hello.

I have a weird problem on Equallogic PS6100 storage. Here hoping that I can have some kind of answer or advice to continue troubleshooting and, hopefully, a solution to the problem.

    Goal

I need the RDM disks to be install on virtual servers through Equallogic PS6100. RDM disks will be used for Windows clusters.

    This is my environment infrastructure.

    1 unit of Equallogic PS6100.

3 modules of ESXi 5.5 servers. (2 NICs connected to the PS6100)

2 virtual machines running Windows Server 2012 R2 for windows clusters.

I created 6 volumes on the Equallogic PS6100 but not able to connect 5 volumes on two windows servers. I need all 6 volumes to be connected to two servers as the RDM disks. Somehow the 6th volume gives me a problem that both servers are able to detect the LUN, but I can not install them. In addition, the connections are on ISCSi.

Once I have installed the 6th volume on one of the server window the other server will be is no longer able to detect the LUN. This is why I can't install this volume on both servers.

I tried scanning the LUN volumes on 3 servers ESXi repeatedly and still I can not install this volume 6 for both servers. I even migrated windows servers to 3 ESXi servers and always with the same result.

All the advice here will be highly appreciated.

    Thank you.

Managed to solve the problem of a work colleague. Problem has been resolved by adding a new controller scsi for the virtual machine. After adding the controller either stop or restart the virtual machine. In doing so, I was able to discover the LUNS and install the disc RDM for servers.

  • PS4000 - new slave showing by car, not online

    Hello

I have a PS4000, model 70-0120, with 16 discs. A walk (14) entered into alert and supposed to replace. We have replaced the ST3500320NS (500 GB) with a ST31000340NS (1 TB) and everything looked good. Once I entered the web console, I see the disc shows alternative instead of in line.

When all the disks were healthy, they all show online and none were marked alternative. Shouldn't the new drive show online? Is there something I need to do?

    Thank you very much.

RAID5 will have at least a spare part, there is no policy of EQL RAID5 allowing without spare parts.

Yes, when a drive goes down, for example the disk 5.   The hot spare will take his place and when you replace the 5 disk, which will become the new spare wheel.  Which slot is the spare wheel is not important.
