EqualLogic PS5000x SAN rebuild

We have acquired a SAN EqualLogic PS5000x network devoid of readers from a client that was close to their office here. Their original disks were shredded for security reasons. As he was a reliable box, that we want to repopulate it with new drives. Are there restrictions on the reader that we can use? We can simply use the readers of manufacturers? Also do you know how I can record it with Dell so I can download the latest firmware. It does not seem to recognize the serial number of the device when I'm on the dell support site. Thank you very much Mike

You would need to buy records, with some newer versions of firmware EQL, dell-branded the restriction is applied.

In order to use and download the firmware table will have to be under warranty.   The license is maintained in the service contract not HW.

    Hello

does anyone have experience of SAN Dell Equallogic PS5000X?  I'll put in place at the moment and it seems there are 2 controllers for all of the 3 NIC (6 in total).  I find I cannot use 3 cards and 1 controller in Active mode and can not find a way to get the two controllers to work in unison and the two assets.

I wanted to use 4 network cards for iSCSI traffic on a VLAN giving a rate 4 GB of storage but you can use 2 network cards, giving a throughput of 2 GB and 1 for management.

Is this the only method available for this type of SAN?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Andy

    Hey,.

The PS is an active / standby. A controller is active. The other will be the shot if the first of all a problem. You have only a configuration to do.

You configure 3 interfaces in the GUI. eth0, 1, 2.

The second controller will use this interface when you need.

You can dedicate a management port, but Dell recommends that you connect all of your ports to the ISCSI network.

    Hope this helps

  • Recommendation of RAID for Equallogic iSCSI SAN?

We look at a Dell/Equallogic PS6000E with 16 drives of 1 TB, it connects to our servers ESX 2-3 (about 15 virtual machines running) and to a SQL cluster (mainly a SharePoint service workload size).  Dell recommends RAID5, which would give us ~ 12 useful to.  Frankly, if we had used 8TB, that would be fine.  Any recommendations for the best RAID for Equallogics level?

    Thank you

    Chad

If you can really just 8 to, I must say raid 10...   Reference Dell suggests always raid 5 no matter what.

Now best practices is to create several groups of disks with different raid levels for the taste of storage at your fingertips.

You are going to have to make some calls to judgment on how to implement.     I suggest you test conversions PtoV tour and play with the config some before deciding, but I know that it is now possible in most cases.

Dell has an excellent white paper on the table.  It's for the MD3000i, but the raid types and most other info still apply to the DAS or san during raids.

  • S Q on putting in place new infrastructure to ESX and equallogic SAN

    Hi all

I have installed recently 3 new servers ESX v4 and an equallogic ps4000x SAN. These are connected by 2 powerconnect switches dell 4524. If you want to criticize my configuration, I added attachments, detailing the layout. I would be interested if someone comments on my installation.

In any case, I'm at the point where I can start server virtualization. What I'm not sure is the best way of ESX/VM configuration to take advantage of Equallogic's snapshot technology. We are likely to buy symantec backupexec agent in the future, so it makes sense to set them up properly now.

I can't seem to find documents on how to set up so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions? I will virtualize exchange and SQL servers among others.

I anyone has suggestions or point me in the right direction, I would be very grateful.

    See you soon,.

We use the last VE ASM, it is smooth, more schedule flexibility than the GUI EQL.  I've done some restorations to test virtual machines and data warehouses of data, on themselves, other stores etc., ASM has worked well.  The previous version looked a little awkward, but 2.0 allows you to selectively restore individual VMs, rather than an entire data store, so a great step forward in the old version.

Please let us know the BackupExec works, we seek also to who.

  • ESXi 4.1 or ESXi 5.0 with iSCSI SAN

    Hello

I'm trying to establishing an environment that is / will be an iSCSI SAN backend entirely.  I know of a lot of reading that the best practice is to config the ESXi host with:

VMKernel > vmnic > physical network adapter > switch ports > port on SAN (config 1:1 - no grouping of vmnic)

    Environment:

    ESXi 4.1 & 5.0

    Force10 switches

    EqualLogic iSCSI SAN (PS4000 & 6000)

Here's my real question (playing the Devil's advocate):

Why I shouldn't team 3-4 vnmics on a vswitch with multiple vmkernel ports?

Given my environment.  Can someone point me to a technical document that explains what will / could happen if I set up the environment ESXi in this way?

    Thank you

    BDAboy22

So, basically, we want the SAN to take full responsibility for the failover instead of the network and/or the SAN for who should resolve the failure (which could lead to the time of restitutio in integrum longer session).   I understand that correctly?

Yes, that's right, we want to stack storage for vSphere manage with path selection and tipping - and by connecting each vmknic directly to the physical vmnic map we sort of "simulate" how to CF cards and also ignores the network failover mechanisms. As you probably know you also need to "bind" the iSCSI Software to the two vmnic (GUI now in 5.0, esxcli in 4.x)

  • Several iSCSI SAN on different VLANS

I have a little trouble to get this configured.

In our environment, we have 4 guests and 2 EqualLogic iSCSI San. Each host has 3 NICs dedicated to iSCSI traffic, and they have been implemented to use the plugin for Multipathing of Dell with 3 VMKernel iSCSI ports, each bound to a NETWORK adapter physical and then linked to the iSCSI software adapter.

We want to add a new SAN QNAP out some VMs test & dev environment of low cost data warehouses. The QNAP San not supporting Jumbo frames, we want to move them to their own VIRTUAL local area network.

Can someone tell me how I can get this set up? I need of course a new VMKernel port running on the VLAN again, but after that I'm stuck.

    Thank you

First: the initiator will be gracefully demote by using standard images.

Second, there is nothing that prevents you from using the same trade for the qnap. If it does not manage the same way MPIO, you may need to add more exchanges and vmknics. If you place moderate to heavy load on the qnap it would interfere with the ability of the EMM to balance the load properly but allows to measure.

We have a group EQL and a Celerra making MPIO in different ways. With Celerra you add several portals (ip addresses) network on different subnets so ideally you set up your trade in this way. For us, this meant adding a second portgroup and vmknic on each vmnic, resulting in a whole bunch of paths to the Celerra said. If our use of Celerra was far from being weak to non-existent I probably don't have it.

  • Config network initial ESX with iSCSI SAN

    Hi all

I want to install 2 ESX 3.5 servers which will be connected to an EqualLogic iSCSI SAN.

The SAN is on a VIRTUAL, 10.x.x.200 with a 255.255.255.224 LAN Gateway.  This VLAN is not routable, DNS servers, etc.

What I am trying to understand, it's for the initial setup of ESX, when I set the config network (console), should I register the IP address for the VIRTUAL LAN, example was:

    IP address: 10.x.x.201

    Gateway: 255.255.255.224

    Primary DNS: white

    Secondary DNS: white

Or, for example B, should I use our 'public' speaking:

    IP Adress:129.x.x.201

    Gateway: 255.255.255.0

    Primary DNS:129.x.x.1

    Secondary DNS: 129.x.x.2

I know that with the VIC, I can later add vSwitches, etc., but at least for the initial installation, I want the configuration to provide smoother operation. Thanks for any idea that you can provide!

    Chad

Hello and welcome to the forums.

What I am trying to understand, it's for the initial setup of ESX, when I set the config network (console), should I register the IP address for the VIRTUAL LAN, example was:

Use example B (129.x.x.x) for the Service Console (management functions), and after that the system is in place to add an another vSwitch used to connect to the SAN VLAN.

    Good luck!

  • Beginner to virtualization advice needed

    All,

We just bought the hardware for virtualization and would welcome your valuable opinions about our choices and how you would set up.

    Reference Dell EqualLogic PS5000X, SAS 10 K drives, performance, chassis, disks SAS 10 K, 400 GB, 8, 2 CTL

Our switches are Juniper 4200EX series

We are looking to install our bootable from SAN servers.

    Here are my questions:

    1. does anyone have the above configuration or similar in their production live site, and if so what are their opinions from performance etc.?

    2. what RAID configuration you would have on the SAN?  Given that only 8 x 400 GB HARD drive would configure us RAID 5 or 10? RAID 5 will give us approximately 2.6 TB but RAID 10 give 1.5 TB but will be a faster operation?  Also do we not have enough disk space?  We are a small business run 14 servers with a total of 700 GB of data overall, do we need to buy more records to the SAN?

    3. what configurations LUN would you require?

Advice, opinions, anything would be appreciated.  Thank you

    Andy

    OK, some words here...

Your physical boxes are now called guests, your virtual machine running on the host is your servers.

You bought the equipment premo for the task at hand, many of us run these hosts with a lot of different without and the Equalogics are really good without. I know people who run 100 + VM on these hosts without any performance problem.

Your host must load ESX (ESXi?), I highly recommend that you load from a mirrored pair of drives on the host itself. We charge ESXi internal USB drives.

Care of your machine virtual of the SAN, which is what you must have redundancy, so if the failure of a host of the virtual machine can be high since the second host.

1 performance is very impressive prodcution with equipped SAS. Still quite adequate on SATA in most cases.

    2. the PIN rules count on performance, you can a lot of space for the snapshots and the diskcopies, believe me. You can quickly several disks in my opinion. 14VM? I want more readers for sure.

3-4. RAID and LUN levels are a difficult things and really every physical servers must on that should be evaluated on a virtual machine from the base of the virtual machine. RAID6 not an option on this SAN? We run raid 5 kind of choice for performance reasons. It is once more application / specific role by VM.

We regularly organize 24 VM on 14 discs. many of these virtual machines are physical servers of bad ass working their but off before virtualization, these without / groups of disks are raid 5 with a hot spare, SAS 400 gig discs) I had the luxury of doing lots and lots of tests with our system before going live performance. Best for us wise speed that LUN and disk group configurations are not recommended by any means.

  • Slow Dell R820 Ping times with 10 Gbit/s, Intel X 540

We just purchased and installed a new R820 who has four 10 Gbps adapters and two 1 Gbps. We have a host of three cluster and an Equallogic iSCSI SAN. We have configured three vSwitches, one for management (two 1 Gbps cards) for iSCSI / vMotion and one for traffic from the virtual machine. We have added this new R820 as the host of the fourth and configured exactly as the others which three on the side of the physical switch. When we move from the virtual computer him the vMotion takes way longer than normal and with the virtual machine network connectivity is disrupted. Once the migration is complete, the virtual machine is to ping requests, but we receive ping times of 1 to 2 ms instead of less than 1 ms, which is the behavior on all other hosts. We have looked at the configuration for a few days now and you don't see any difference in the configuration with the first three hosts. We checked the power management settings in the BIOS. We have quadruple checked the physical switch side of things. We tried assigned an adapter to each vSwitch and then what physical switching adapter is assigned to see if it was a given map. Running out of ideas.

The question ends up being the connection cables. We were using the UTP (unshielded twisted pair) CAT6A cables. We have swapped out them for STP CAT6A and the problem disappeared.

  • Dear friends: I need some help regarding licensing ESXI 5.

    My installation went like this.

    1 x Equallogic 4110 SAN with gross TB 7,2 of 10 GB/s ISCSI storage

    3 x Dell Poweredge r.620 with 2 x 6-8 cpu cores each and 32 GB of RAM

    2 x Powerconnect 10 Gbps ISCSI switch

I intend to run the 14 and 15 guests inside these 3 ESXI hosts and will require VMotion. The Dell sales person recommend the Kit of acceleration Standard with 8 CPUs, but the cost of license means that I'll have to cut on the material that I do not want to do.

I did a search on the licenses of VM and found the VMware vSphere Essentials Plus Kit that allows VMware vSphere 5 Essentials Plus Kit 3 guests (Max 2 processors per host) and 192 GB vRAM right.

It seems that I can use the VMotion with this approval as well? But I dun on the right of vRAM 192GO? My features of material meets the criteria? 2 x 6-8 cores CPU / 32 GB of physical RAM on each host and the ESXI host MAXIMUM number is 3 for my office. Thanks for the help.

3 EXSI guests will come with 64 GB RAM instead. I assumed that it will always meet the essential requirements more permission?

With vSphere paid versions, is not the physical memory that counts but the payment of vRAM, which is the sum of pool memory allocated to the lit of VMs (more certain overload) with 3 guests (64 GB) you probably do not do flow in no limit payment of vRAM, since you will usually not work hosts on the limit , but keep enough free resources on each host to be able to run all the virtual machines in case one of the hosts fails.

  • Best practices for vSphere 5 Networking

    Hi all

    Given the following environment:

    (1) 4 physical servers, each server has 16 (Gigabit) network interface cards will install vSphere 5 std.

    (2) 2 switches with SAN storage battery function

    (3) 2 Equallogic PS4000 SAN (two controllers)

    (4) 2 switches for the traffic of the virtual machine

As for networking, I intend create some vSwitches on each physical server as follows

    1 vSwitch0 - used for iSCSI storage

6 network adapters are associated with IP-hash, multitracks with iSCSI Storage consolidation policy. and storage load balancing is round Rodin (vmware)

(vmware suggests to use 2 cards for 1 traget of IP storage, I'm not sure)

2 vSwitch1 - used for the virtual machine

6 Teamed network adapters for the traffic of the virtual machine, with the hash intellectual property policy

    3 vSwitch2 - management

    2 network cards are associated

    4 vSwitch3 - vMotion

    2 network cards are associated

You would like to give me some suggestions?

Alex, the standard set by the storage and VMware is used by dell for their servers and tested sound on their equipment and the publication of the document, it is recommended...

This sound is the best practice for dell server with this model mentioned in the document to use.

    Hope that clarifies...

  • New to VMware and Exchange 2010

    Hello

I'm new to VMware and have some questions about the installer.  We just bought a HP DL380 G7 server and Exchange 2010.  I want to virtualize this server with a BES.  I'm trying to understand the best way to proceed.  We also have a Dell EqualLogic iSCSI SAN (PS4000).  Wouldn't it be better for me to boot from SAN and have ESxi installed on the SAN?  Or would it be preferable for ESxi installed on the server and have my VM hosted/installed on the SAN?  Thanks for the help.

    Hello owblueiii,

I almose same infrastructure such as this, when I started the virtualization process was confused in this place, finally, we kept the boot on local, VMs oniSCSI SAN.

advantages: 1. because if you have any questions you can the Como.

2 and also a little difficult to troubleshoot if you have the on iscsi san boot partition.

    3. you can register your vms on san iscsi timing if you want the new ESX installation.

Hope it's useful to your question.
