EqualLogic PS6000 member space free vs free space pool

Hello

I have a single group, member disk usage details are capacity total members 12.22 TB, used by volumes 8.17 TB snaps and Replica 90meg and free member space 4.04 TB. This varies widely details then realized to the pool area, capacity becomes 12.22 TB (it's a replication target so delegate area's TB 11.55) reserved for snapshots is 2.5 G reserved volumes 109.8 G is reserved for the replication of 50 G, free space 518.94 G.

The two figures in the clear mind 4.04 CT for the verses 518 G for the pool member. The free members area includes all free space currently used by the reserve of replica for each volume may be replicated?

Hi Mark,

The difference is pool view shows how much has been allocated, Member discovers how much actually was written out of this allowance.

Kind regards

  • VMWare using only 1 IP of EqualLogic PS6000

I have a new configuration of vSphere with 2 hosts ESXi (Dell R610s) and all my a new EqualLogic PS6000 storage. I use the Broadcom NIC for iSCSI (all other traffic exceeds a secondary NIC 4port). Right now I use 2 ethernet ports on the R610s and PS6000 for iSCSI. I followed the instructions in the document "setting up VMWare vSphere software iSCSI...". "Dell for 2 different iSCSI VMKernel interfaces configuration. The PS6000 uses an IP address of the 10.30.1.1 group and the 2 network cards are 10.30.100.1 and 10.30.100.2 (all with a 255.255.0.0 netmask). The problem I have is when I connect the R610s to the PS6000 via the IP 10.30.1.1, the PS6000 only redirects them to 10.30.100.1, forcing all traffic from these two hosts in the same VM. I tried connecting a computer non - ESX (my Mac desktop computer), and it sends me to 10.30.100.2, so this interface works without a doubt. What I'm trying to understand now, that is exactly how I have VMWare to connect two IPS to distribute the load between the two interfaces on the PS6000. The PS6000 reports 2 connections by volume of each ESX host.

Does anyone have an idea what I should look next?

    Thank you.

I opened several requests for EQL support about something similar to this.  In many cases when I migrated a table in an existing pool, or when I activated interfaces more I don't see connections spread.  I saw the following:

-Select Eth1 and Eth2, wait a few hours, run IOMeter tests, all connections are always on Eth0

-Restart the controller, now all connections are on Eth1 and Eth2 with none on Eth0

-Wait as the rest of the weekend and check Monday, iscsi connections are balanced.

The above situations have happened to me a few times and I have been informed that the balancer connection will be finally doing things.  I think something has changed with this code over time, it was that the balancer spreads connections very quickly.

  • EqualLogic group member network configuration error: "management interface should not be on the san subnet.

    Hello

We currently have new EqualLogic 6100 device with this network configuration:

    Director of the IP - 192.168.0.2 (VLAN1).

    Member network config:
    eth0 - 192.168.0.3 (VLAN1)
    eth1 - 10.10.10.3 (VLAN2)
    eth2 - 10.10.10.4 (VLAN2)
    eth3 - 10.10.10.5 (VLAN2)
    ETH4 - empty

I would attribute 192.168.0.4 to eth4, but received the error: "management interface should not be on the san subnet.

I am sure that all interfaces eth has access to the VLAN1 and VLAN2, mean error indicates that eth4 should not access VLAN2 and only access the VLAN1 on the switch?

Or eth0 should also have access to the VLAN2 only to reconfigure eth0 and eth4?

    Thank you

    > The group eating IP should be in iscsi VLANS?

    Yes!

Note: If configure you an EQL it will ask an iSCSI port because nothing is more necessary to bring it up. The doest previous EQLs have a dedicated Mgmt Port and later, you can convert the last ethX as a MGMT port. This is the reason why configure you ISCSI at the beginning. (Think of a mixed group of newer and older models, and you get a picture)

OK... once again it is the one and only member of the Group and there is making the production host connected to the right?

The change of IP address, to a 3rd. subnet for temporary use.

-Do not touch eth0-3 and the IP address of the group now

-Configure the MGMT port and IP address management in the tempr group. Subnet. Use the Config-> Adv. Group-> network MGMT. You can change the MGMT Port of the Member, and the address IP of MGMT

-For the registration of the configuration, you will lose access. You must place your admin PC in the templ. subnet so

-Connect to the GroupMgr with temp again. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

-Now you can change the IP address of group 10.10.10..x

-Now you can change eth0 10.10.10.2

-At the end, you can change the address IP of the Group MANAGEMENT, as well as the MGMT Port to 192.168.0.x

-Change the IP address of your admin PC rear

A failover, you should consider to hang a serial cable the active controller of the EQL. Use 9600,8,1, N with your favorite terminal program (putty.exe on windows). All the steps, you can perform from the command line.

If this group and the only member not in production, but you can reset the config and restart from the beginning.

  • EqualLogic PS6000s in a group hybrid

    Hi all

We have 2 PS6000 without. An SSD and a SATA.

With the new firmware (V7.1.2) we understand that the creation of a group, and identify as such SSD table, it was supposed to perform in the form of a table of the hybrid. The group does not appear when you run as expected and the e/s is higher on rotating disks on the SSD (seems backwards).

Can someone confirm this for me? I'm not find documents confirming the he...

Any help would be greatly appreciated, perhaps there is a configuration setting that you miss? There may be a configuration there guide I'm not find?

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Mark

    Hi Mark,

Yes, sorry, it was supposed to be 'impossible '.

A 'Hybrid' 6000 model cannot SSD + SAS drives in the SAME chassis.  A small set of disks SSD and balance SAS drives.  The only available RAID option is "accelerated RAID6.   It is this level that offers the advantage of this combination.   RAID levels do not in the Member States in a pool.  Each Member has it's own RAIDsets.  Data in a pool are distributed to members in the same pool.

  • EqualLogic PS6000 Serires IP address changing

    Hello

My logic equal group IP is 192.168.0.1 and my two other members of storage are 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3 no port management "management of ports are not configured and is unable to be present due to the direction and iscsi are on the same subnet.

I would like to change the IP address of the 172.16.10.2 group and my two 172.16.10.3 storage 172.16.10.4 "I want to get rid of the subnet 192.x in preparations of iscsi with the exception of the management ports."

If I change the ip group at 172.16.10.2 and activate 1 Ethernet ports on the two members with IP 172.16.10.3 172.16.10.4, this group will still be intact and members can see each other in the group without problem?  or what I need to reset the devices of storage and everything again?

    * This is not a production system and contains no data on this subject yet.*

    Thank you

    Hello

You don't have to reset the berries to change IP addresses.  Just do it slowly, I prefer the serial port as it will always be available when you change IPS.  At some point, you have a PC that has access to both networks.

PS6000, alias Type 7 controller does not have a dedicated port of Mgmt.  If you want to use out-of-band management, you will lose the last GbE port for this feature.

So assuming that you do not want to lose a GbE port, you must change a port on each Member new subnet...  This updates the internal members IP addresses table so that they will always stay in contact with each other.  When you get down to the last port, change the IP address of the Group on the new subnet.  Then change the default gateway for the new subnet on all members.  Then finally replace the last network ports on all members of the new subnet.

I suggest you then restart the two members, a moment.

If you have a contract of support in place, Dell support can help you in this process.

  • ISCSI EqualLogic PS6000 path problem

    Hello

    I have a PS6000 2 Powerconnect 5524 and 2 R710

Ports 1 and 2 of my san are Switch1 and ports 3 and 4 switch 2, ports are marked on VLAN10 one two swjtches, they ar not stacked

The legs of my san ports are:

    Port 1 10.10.1.10 switch 1
    2 port 10.10.1.20 switch 1
    Port 3 10.10.1.30 switch 2
    4 port 10.10.1.50 switch 2

    Virtual IP San: 10.10.1.200

    My R610 has an vmnic3 on switch1 and a vmnic5 of the switch2, ports are VLAN10 taggued

With this configuration I IC see my 4 way san

    If I place a 10.10.1.50 on vmnic3/vmk0 switch1 ISCSI1 vmkernel port I see my san 10.10.1.10, 10.10.1.20, or 10.10.1.200

    If I place a vmkernel ISCSI2 port 10.10.1.60 on vmnic5/vmk1 the switch2 I cannot see my san

    If I delete ISCSI1, I can see my san ISCSI2 and vmnic5

If I place ISCSI1 and ISCSI2 on VLANs separated, I can see my san on two NICs, so I have 4 path to the San

    I have seen that:

    ~ # esxcfg - road - l
    VMkernel itineraries:
Interface of network gateway subnet mask
    10.10.1.0 255.255.255.0 subnet local vmk0
    10.10.3.0 255.255.255.0 subnet local vmk4
    10.10.4.0 255.255.255.0 subnet local vmk3
    by default 0.0.0.0 10.10.1.254 vmk0

    Perhaps a road problem?

    THX

I have install up to EQLs with vSphere several times. Dell and EQL recommend a one-to-one ratio of iSCSI VMkernel ports to physical network interface cards. If you have 2 NICs per host dedicated to iSCSI, you should have 2 VMkernel ports on each host (and remember, they must be configured exactly the name of vMotion work). They also recommend the same number of network adapters on each host that you have on the SAN controller - SAN 4 controller iSCSI NIC - 4 NICs per server for iSCSI.

Despite the paths physical and network cards redundant, each VMkernel port is only a single logical path.

Here's how I would do it with a series 6000 EQL (4 ports per controller)

    R710 #1:

    VMkernel Port 1 - NIC physics 1 - switch A

VMkernel Port 2 - Phyiscal NIC 2 - switch has

    VMkernel Port 3 - NIC physical 3 - switch B

    VMkernel Port 4 - NIC physical 4 - switch B

    R710 #2:

    VMkernel Port 1 - NIC physics 1 - switch A

VMkernel Port 2 - Phyiscal NIC 2 - switch has

    VMkernel Port 3 - NIC physical 3 - switch B

    VMkernel Port 4 - NIC physical 4 - switch B

4 port .1Q between switch A and B, allowing all the VLANS to pass through. As said Andre, all cards on the same iSCSI network interface VLAN. I don't see why you would need or want to several VLANS iSCSI.

    Reference Dell EQL:

Connect 2 network by each switch controller cards, for each controller is multichannel through two switches.

In this configuration, VMware will see 4 paths to the storage, which is what it should be, if you have 4 NICs per controller. You will also get full in this configuration redundancy, given that each host has 2 paths by switch.

I am very familiar with EQLs, so if you have any other questions just ask. I'll actually implement a PS4000 this week.

  • Equallogic PS6000 + ESX iSCSI storage redundancy: LUN disappears when 1 switch off!

Hello everyone, this is my first post here

OK, so as the title says, I'm working on the redundancy under ESX. Because network configurations can be quite confusing I just did a quick draft of our infrastructure with one of my 3 ESX host and will try to explain as clearly as possible, the configuration details.

In my ESX host, I configured a new vswitch with the vmkernel and vmnetwork joined 4 (NIC 2,3,4 and 5) my card NETWORK is configured as active in the collection of NETWORK adapters (also tried to put 2 according to availability) method of failover is Beacon probe (also tried with the status of link)

On another VSwitch I have the console service with the NIC (NIC 1 and 6) 2 of the joint.

My 2 switches are connected by a SHIFT of 4 links and the RSTP Protocol is active and works (although I have a lot of broadcasting activities, as soon as I connect my LAN switch to the SAN switches, but that's another story)

My SAN is connected with 2 links on A button and switch B 2 for each controller. I created 3 volumes on the SAN that is each configured in my host ESX 3. So far, everything is great.

Now, I pull the power plug from the switch a. switch B takes the lead and I can still ping SAN network lan switch, I can ping my small guest VM but the virtual machine itself quickly dies. I can't even it reboot or I get an error message indicating that the file is not found. So I go to my store of data, and it is when I see that it's empty! I need to open any new analysis of the LUN to again access to the data store and start my VM.

From my point of view, although ESX detects that some links are down when I pull the cord, the iSCSI session just dies on me and will not "restart". I read stuff on multiple paths, but the "manage paths" button is grayed out, I'm not even sure that's what I need.

So basically, as you can see I am quite new to all this and completely lost when it comes to things of redundancy, hell, I didn't even know on the tree covering weight before yesterday! So, if any of you guys can give me some advice on the realization of redundancy I look forward ^^

    Thank you very much!

I wouldn't put my vmnetwork and my storage on the same vSwitch network.  I separate them into their own vSwitch and use two natachasery for each vSwitch.

Once you have the traffic separated out, I'll make sure a vmkping, and not a ping to the storage target runs through each physical NIC.  Remove all cables and one at a time to create works of course routing their connection.

  • ESX brings more free space than does SAN

I have a student who has an ISCSI SAN Dell EqualLogic PS400E and ESX 3.5i servers using VMware software initiator. They observed that formatted with the VMFS LUNS show different amounts of free space if you view ESX or SAN. The SAN of reports more LUNS are low on space but ESX reports that there is a good bit of free space on the data store. The variation of the reports may be as much as 50 GB.

Anyone got any ideas on why this can happen and that they should look to reconcile the differences?

You can find an old thread on this argument.

It's true: Equallogic indicate less space than ESX, but the reason is simple...

EqualLogic can't VMFS and how it works.

Know only the block marked as used (which may be free or unused in VMFS).

  • 2 storage Equallogic PS6100 pool, need to remove and update of 1 member

I PS6100 2 in 1 pool of storage. One of them is having a few problems and desperately need to have updated firmware to update (we're on 6.02, other 7.1.5 of the).

So I want to remove the other older and move all the other Member of the pool of storage volumes. then do some maintenance (firmware) and put online and return in the storage pool.

I see a few references to 'remove member', but don't know if it's the best way to go.

    Hello

First question, do you have a box to open with Dell?  Moving members entrance/exit will put additional pressure on the discs.

What are the "themes" you encounter?

You run VMware ESXi servers?   EQL FW before 6.0.6 - H1 are vulnerable to damage to their experience VMFS data warehouses.  What is lost data.   For best results, the VMs and ESXi servers must be down when you upgrade the firmware in this specific scenario.

You don't want to remove a member, want to create a new pool, for example "Maint" and then activate this 6.0.2 Member and move it to the pool "Maint".   This assumes that the Member still has enough free space to hold the amount of data written to the 6.0.2.  If this isn't the case, you can not remove this member from the pool unless you add in another table EQL to this pool.

Move outside Member, will force the data to drop for the members remaining in the same pool.

To what extent are you planning on the upgrade?   I suggest that you go at least the latest version of 8.1.x.

On the 6.0.2 table you will need to first go to 7., 1.x, reboot, then you can switch to 8.1, x then move 7.1.x member to 8.1.x then you can merge the pools.

  • Update firmware on AN Equallogic SAN on a cluster

I'm new to Equallogic and need to update the firmware on a PS 6000 SAN that is in a cluster with TWO of SEM, that the firmware needs go to v6.0.7 to v7.0.5

My questions: I was told that I need to evacuate the SAN (migrate everything out of him) to the second SAN in the cluster, so there is no risk on everything that's wrong in the virtual machine, while the firmware update coming.

Where am I supposed to go? I checked the workgroup SAN Equallogic and VMWare vsphere GUI Manager interface, and I don't see a place where I can do.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

We assume that your EQLs have two controllers on the right?  EQL use a controller Active and standby and in the event of a failure of the controller failover took about 10 sec. To survive this event or need a propper configuration of your phys. Switch, hosts and virtual machines. Just follow the installation and best practices.

Then... a firmware perform the same type of failover. From an update FW flashing the standby controller first, then asks for a 'restart' which performs failover. That the 'new' standby also will Flash.

All our EQL + VMware configurations remain 10 seconds (4 pings are missing) breakage.

If you wish to cancel a member of a pool for maintenance it takes something like that

-Both of your members are in the same pool

-You create a new and "move a member" of the existing pool in the new. If there is enough space left all volumes is automatically migrated to the existing Member and the last in the pool

-If the Member is now in your pool maintenance you can perform the FW update

Its fully transparent and non interruptible for hosts/VMs. But takes a looooonnnnng time finshed.

If your members are in different pools already and assuming that enough space

-Use 'move the volume' to transfer a volume of a pool to another. You need to check if there is enough space left

-Another method would be to activate SyncRep for all Volumes and perform a switch over. If a member holds all the SyncAlternates you can put paused the SyncRep and perform the update of FW.

In the first 7 months of this year we perform 3 (4?) FW upgrade of our 11 EQLs that currently spans 7.0.6. The process time vacuate trust has never been an option for us.

The FW comes with a PDF file on how to perform the upgrade and contains some notes so please take a look inside.

  • Logical layout of Equallogic storage with new members pools

In each of our server rooms, we currently have 2 Equallogic storage pools:

    K 10-1 GB (2 X 6100 X)

    K 7-1 GB (2 X 6100F)

We just bought an additional PS6100E and a PS6100XS for each server room.

Existing 6100F bays that we include 3 TB drives, and a new includes 4 TB drives. These berries is usually not much force exerted on them and are mostly used to map network shares or backups / replicas. Can anyone see a problem with the addition of the 4 TB 6100F s to this group?

I was counting on the deployment of the 6100XS in its own pool, as the advice I read do not mix with other types of table.

I am struggling to remember now, but you can specify a different to join pool a new Member of the group or do you always go in the default pool first?

If it always goes to the default pool first, is there a way to change a new pool to become the default pool?

    Thank you

    Hello

The 6100F can certainly be in the same group / pool without problem.  Data are distributed to members according to their relative sizes.  If a two pool members, where is 2 x else will have 2/3 of the data relative to the smallest Member.

When you add a new Member is going to the default pool.  However, with a defined RAID policy it does not provide a capacity to this pool.   So after adding in the group, I suggest you then turn on the Ethernet ports, move it to the new pool, and then assign the RAID policy.

  • EqualLogic SAN and Jumbo frames

I can't get the jumbo frames to work on our Equallogic PS6000.  We have the following configuration PS6000-> Dell PowerConnect 6248 (bunk)-> Windows 2008 Server.

The network cards on the SAN has been set at 9000 MTU, ports on switches are set to MTU 9216 and the NIC on Server 2008 is fixed to 9014 with active RX & Tx flow control.

When the server connects to the SAN, newspapers account connection iSCSI target to the initiator "172.21.X.X:3260, iqn.2001-05.com.equallogic:0-8a0906-xxxxxxxxxxx-23a001a955452af6-server1" ' 172.21.X.X:49156, iqn.1991 - 05.com.microsoft:server1' managed, using the length of the standard framework.

When I ping the SAN of Server 2008 with a shitload of 8972 bytes, it works very well.

    C:\Users\system>ping 172.21.x.x f-l 8972
    Ping 172.21.x.x with 8972 bytes of data: reply from 172.21.x.x: bytes = 8972 times<1ms ttl="255" reply="" from="" 172.21.x.x:="" bytes="8972"><1ms ttl="255" reply="" from="" 172.21.x.x:="" bytes="8972"><1ms ttl="255" reply="" from="" 172.21.x.x:="" bytes="8972"><1ms ttl="">

Why 8972?  Told that some genius on the internet.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well we got it to work.  On Server 2008, we have Broadcom and Intel network adapters.  For our tests, we were just using the Broadcom NIC.  Properties Advanced NETWORK adapter, we initially have the value package Jumbo 9014 and it did not work.  So, we opened the Broadcom Advanced Control Suite that came with the NIC and searched and found that there are two parameters that need to be addressed.  There is a jumbo packet definition which has been set at 9014, which is what we wanted it in the advanced NIC Properties.  There is another parameter, MTU, which can be seen on the advanced NIC Properties.  It has been set at 1500.  Once we define to 9000, frames jumbo started working.  We then uncabled Broadcom NIC and wired the card NETWORK Intel and the value of frames 9014 on advanced network adapter properties.  Once we have that frame has worked on this NETWORK adapter, no other measures were needed.  If it's working now.  Thanks to everyone for their help.

  • Reorganisation of our group

We currently have a group with a pool of storage ('default') and two members:

-PS4100, NL - SAS 7200 RPM in RAID 10 (smallest Member)

-SAS PS6210, 10,000 RPM in RAID 50 (largest Member)

I would like to convert the two members to the RAID 6 (to gain some space and increase the reliability of RAID) while at the same time, separate the members so that they operate independently for volumes are is no longer "striped" on the two members.

In the case where a member fails I would make sure the volumes on the remaining Member remain online and accessible.

I have enough free space in the group to remove the smallest Member and move all volumes for the largest Member during the migration process.

    My idea is to:

-create a new pool and move the smallest Member in this pool (this should move all volumes for the largest Member).

-change the RAID level on the smallest Member (at this time, all volumes should have been evacuated from this member, by the action of moving pool)

(- back some volumes of the largest Member of the smallest Member / the new swimming pool)

-change the RAID level on the largest Member

This work and this will leave completely independent volumes on each Member, or do I need to divide the members in their own groups to create a complete independence?

    Hello

You have correctly.  Simple members in their own pool, do not share data so that only the defaulting Member volumes will be affected.   When you move it 4100 would be the right time to update the firmware on the Board and check to see if the firmware of the player needs upgrading as well.  There is a new firmware of drive kit, v9 available on the site.

You must also upgrade the 6210 to match of course.  6210's must run 7.1.9 or 8.1.1 to avoid a possible cache synchronization problem.  So the 4100 will need to have the same firmware.

  • Delete the single pool of the Group

    Hello

Is it possible to remove a member from a group that is the sole member of a swimming pool without losing data in this pool?
I want to add that members of a new group and keep the pool.

    Kind regards

    Arnaud

No, remove a member needs to evacuate all the data to the rest of the members first. If there is no member or free space left you can not remove the Member.

Also delete removes the configuration of a member.

  • The storage load balancing process

We have a group of 4 members, total approximately 30 TB of space. In the past, we had a lot of volumes of 500 GB for ESX, after the installation of the ESXi5.1, we use higher volumes, about 1.5 TB. So there are a lot of changes in the storage pool. We find that the EQ is balancing of storage compared to 4 members as expected. We thought it was over two or three days agoo, but now he's balancing... then again for a couple of day all volumes are spread over 3 members, also, as expected, but he decides to charge storage it swings again... and again...  It is coming to an end sometimes?

We have another group with 4 members and also the same amount of space, but it we do not use the 1.5 TB volumes again... here, we see that EQ is continuous storage load balancing pool.

Im not worried yet :)), but whenever volumes are redestributing compared to members, it does not follow on some reconnects for ESX as the part of a volume can and will reside on another Member where on that time esx is not a connection to that session at that time.

    Hello René,.

It will not be stuck in a loop.  Part of the balance to the maintenance of free space between the members.  So when several pages are written to a specific member, space balancing will create plans to move the blocks to the other members to free up space on this member.  It's an ongoing balancing act.  In addition, extended periods of heavy i/o load balancer Advanced Performance will swap pages in order to compensate for the latency between members.

    Kind regards
