EqualLogic storage pools - fusion

Hi all

Hope someone can help with this quick query.

I have 3 storage pools, all SAS RAID 10 with mulitple volumes on each. If I were to merge pools, what immediate action or it copy all volumes first? Think time really. I don't expect a time framework btw as you do not know my set up just if it takes time or its immediate.

Thank you

Dave

Hello

The change will be immediate.  However, space balancing will take time to complete.  Depending on the amount of data, speed and load on the group.

Make sure that you do not exceed the limit of 1024 unique pool.

Kind regards

  • EqualLogic storage pool - replication

I am very new at EQL replication and am trying to wade into white papers.

I have several questions that I expect to have answered. But first a bit of my setup.

I have a PS6110XV (firmware 6.05) and one Storage Pool and Volume/LUN serving an ESX HA Cluster. The volume has been created (not by me) to its maximum almost 4.8 TB (high volume) with very little for the snapshots (5%) and local reserve. Common current use is 2.6 TB with a little over 1.8 free to.

I'm trying to understand my options of setting up this unit as a primary group to replicate on a PS4110E and will have questions. First of all, I grew up the PS4110E in its own group and am able to connect to the local iSCSI of the PS6110XV network. Everything is good with regard to connectivity at this point. However, Im faced with the question if I need to evacuate my volume entirely on the PS6110XV and start over with a new distribution of volume because the primary group fails for lack of space, which according to me is the lack of space that I have to return to the local reserve.

1 should I a local reserve on the primary group equal to or larger than the part 'in service' of the single LUN on this unit?

    1a. If Yes to 1;

My current volume on the PS6110XV shows 2.6 TB in use, however, I managed to get my HA cluster up to 1.7 TB. However, the volume on the LUN EQL shows still 2.6 TB of writing that I've previously run. I tried the vm tools to reclaim space, but now it is understand only oriented thin provisioned LUNs. Have I not an option to recover space on the thick LUNS, which should leave me theoretically with enough free space in the logical unit number to perform the initial replication?

    1B. If Yes to 1, not 1:

Can I add a second table of members (in my case a much PS5000 ELDERLY) to the primary group in another Pool of storage and use to the local reserve of my LUN PS6110XV just to accommodate replication?

    1 c. If Yes to 1 and no to 1A and 1B:

I have to evacuate my PS6110XV and start over and be smarter with my allowance and reserves to ensure that I consider the replication from the beginning?

    2. looking forward: once I get this configuration I have will locate the secondary group over the WAN. I have a lot of bandwidth, but I am willing to confirm some things. I understand that I can not NAT traffic. Telling me that I have the unique opportunity to set up a virtual private network, or go with a transfer L2. Is this correct? What I am especially struggling here is whether the default gateway of the NIC management or group should be accessible to the remote location. I don't know if I am articulating here and I'm strong enough with the side network, but think I should set up correct routing (not not using NAT) within the correct one iSCSI networks WAN link?

Thanks for any advice or information here. I really appreciate it.

    JK

    Do not remove the Member.

First of all I would like to convert the thick volume a thin provisioned volume.  Who will the new unallocated space in the pool of free space.   Supprimer delete snapshots, and rerun the recovery operation.  You may need to increase the percentage to reclaim space.

Then try again to configure replication for the PS4110.    Once you get the replicated data, you can then move the DR table to its final location.

Both need access to all ports on both sides.  Then yes a VPN.

  • Logical layout of Equallogic storage with new members pools

In each of our server rooms, we currently have 2 Equallogic storage pools:

    K 10-1 GB (2 X 6100 X)

    K 7-1 GB (2 X 6100F)

We just bought an additional PS6100E and a PS6100XS for each server room.

Existing 6100F bays that we include 3 TB drives, and a new includes 4 TB drives. These berries is usually not much force exerted on them and are mostly used to map network shares or backups / replicas. Can anyone see a problem with the addition of the 4 TB 6100F s to this group?

I was counting on the deployment of the 6100XS in its own pool, as the advice I read do not mix with other types of table.

I am struggling to remember now, but you can specify a different to join pool a new Member of the group or do you always go in the default pool first?

If it always goes to the default pool first, is there a way to change a new pool to become the default pool?

    Thank you

    Hello

The 6100F can certainly be in the same group / pool without problem.  Data are distributed to members according to their relative sizes.  If a two pool members, where is 2 x else will have 2/3 of the data relative to the smallest Member.

When you add a new Member is going to the default pool.  However, with a defined RAID policy it does not provide a capacity to this pool.   So after adding in the group, I suggest you then turn on the Ethernet ports, move it to the new pool, and then assign the RAID policy.

  • 2 storage Equallogic PS6100 pool, need to remove and update of 1 member

I PS6100 2 in 1 pool of storage. One of them is having a few problems and desperately need to have updated firmware to update (we're on 6.02, other 7.1.5 of the).

So I want to remove the other older and move all the other Member of the pool of storage volumes. then do some maintenance (firmware) and put online and return in the storage pool.

I see a few references to 'remove member', but don't know if it's the best way to go.

    Hello

First question, do you have a box to open with Dell?  Moving members entrance/exit will put additional pressure on the discs.

What are the "themes" you encounter?

You run VMware ESXi servers?   EQL FW before 6.0.6 - H1 are vulnerable to damage to their experience VMFS data warehouses.  What is lost data.   For best results, the VMs and ESXi servers must be down when you upgrade the firmware in this specific scenario.

You don't want to remove a member, want to create a new pool, for example "Maint" and then activate this 6.0.2 Member and move it to the pool "Maint".   This assumes that the Member still has enough free space to hold the amount of data written to the 6.0.2.  If this isn't the case, you can not remove this member from the pool unless you add in another table EQL to this pool.

Move outside Member, will force the data to drop for the members remaining in the same pool.

To what extent are you planning on the upgrade?   I suggest that you go at least the latest version of 8.1.x.

On the 6.0.2 table you will need to first go to 7., 1.x, reboot, then you can switch to 8.1, x then move 7.1.x member to 8.1.x then you can merge the pools.

  • EqualLogic - Volumes moving storage pools

    Hello

I want to move a volume across storage pools this weekend but begins to wonder about something.

I have 3 pools of storage all in the same group.

    Level 1 (2 ps3900xv)

    Level 2 (1 ps4000e and 1 ps4100e)

    Tier3 (1 ps6100xv)

We go to the retirement of the 3900 2 because they are EOL. I have 4 books I want to move from level 1 to the Tier3. 3 volumes are my Exchange 2010 database and the 4th volume is my SQL databases.

What I was wondering is can I move these volumes with database Exchange and SQL DB to live? From what I've been reading is claims of Dell you can. The part that worries me is I moved a volume of test and noticed that the iSCSI connections terminate (log out and back in) for a fraction of a second, and I don't want that affect databases.

    Thanks for the tips!

    Hello

Yes, you can move the living.  Logout/login is necessary because you have moved the data to another Member.  This is handled through the iSCSI specification.  'S called it ASYNC logout and redirection of connection.   The table will display the initiator to disconnect a specific session.   When it goes back to the address of discovery, he is redirected to the new physical port.   All connections to an EQL array are handled this way.

FYI: If there are many books on level 1, you can merge Tier1 and Tier3 in one step.  Then move a 3900 member to a temp pool, which will leave all the data on this member behind.  Then you can remove this member and repeat for the last 3900.    It's fewer steps in this way and you can start at night and let it run overnight.  The merge process is close to the trapezoids.  Because no page movement starts immediately.  Then merge, then select a member to an empty pool.  This will save time restriping data across the pool now three members.

    Either way works fine.

    Kind regards

  • EqualLogic volume refusing to move storage pools

I have (2) PS6000 arrays in a group.  A table represents my default storage pool.  The second table, I just added and created a new pool (maint).  My default pool is RAID 5.  My pool maint is RAID 6.  I am trying to move a volume of my default pool to my pool of maint.  Everything seems normal, but the volume makes never any advanced towards the end of the move.  The GUI indicates that the volume is in motion and watch the current status but the percent complete is zero.  I am able to cancel the move and everything goes back to normal.  I can try then move again, but the results are the same.

My default pool has 1.41 TB of free space and 3.05 to reserved volumes.  My pool Maint 11.34 TB of free space.

My default pool table has only an IO module.  My pool table now has two modules e/s.

My pool table now shows 1 error on packages on one of the interfaces.  I don't know how to clear it.

I am unable to find errors that indicate why the volume will not move.

In addition, the default table is running firmware 5.2.6, Maint table running 6.0.7.

Ideas, any help would be greatly appreciated.

    UPDATE!

It seems that it was caused by the firmware versions do not match.  Once I have updated the firmware on the default pool table, I was able to move the volume between the pools.

  • Question about several berries in a single storage pool

A couple of years ago, we bought a PS4100x and that it has set RAID6. We were happy with our performance, but we are running out of storage space. We have recently acquired a PS6000e and PS4000xv that we seek to add to the default storage pool and to give us more storage capacity. I was able to successfully join the PS4000xv swimming like a RAID10 (performance gain) and want to join the PS6000e swimming like a RAID6 (provision of capacity).

I've read several different positions on the problems of mixture of RAID levels and types of disk (SATA/SAS) and negatively impact SAN performance or downright causing failure of SAN. Furthermore, I continue to find mention of problems with the previous firmware. Unfortunately, I can't find anything current that will help me through this issue.

My goal is to have the following 3 tables of EqualLogic in the default storage pool:

    • PS4100x (10 k SAS) RAID6 (approx. 15 to)
    • (15 k SAS) PS4000xv RAID10 (approx. 3 to)
    • PS6000e (7.2 k SATA) RAID6 (approx. 11 TB)

Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Thank you!

    Reference Dell Dustin,

You can mix both RAID and the types of players in the same pool.  That is supported.  Especially on current FW 7.1.5 and 8.0.2 just came out today in fact.

When there are several members in the same pool, the data is distributed across members, in proportion to their relative sizes.  If the 15K Member will have only a small amount of data compared to the others.

Often, when you buy a 15K member is for a specific purpose in mind.  Some of the benefits of faster spindle will be lost for more data on the volume will be on more/more members.

You can set preferences for volume to R10 to ask more than the volume go.  You can start with the 15K in its own pool.  Later, you can merge the pools.

If you are satisfied with your performance now and are not the intention of that greatly increases the load of I/O then you can keep them in the same pool and it will be much better overall performance.  Given that the members of the group are working together.

In addition, during a sustained peak load, the advanced performance load balancer will exchange blocks of one very busy at a less crowded.  This helps out even the load.

  • How to create the new storage pool?

    Hello.
I am running windows 8 and I wanted to create a new storage pool for my personal files. but how?

I have only 500 GB of storage.

    current storage pools:

    OS (C :) - 460 + GB)

    Lenovo (d) - 20 + GB

    Thank you!

    Hi Jerome,

Yes, the statement means that you can use an external drive such as a hard drive or a USB drive as a storage drive. What you need to do is plug in the hard drive, go to start screen, type storage, click on manage storage. Click on create a new pool and storage space , and then follow the instructions on the screen (as shown on the link provided on the previous answer).

Alternatively, you can also create a new partition of the hard disk volume. You mentioned that the operating system drive is 460 GB and drive "D" takes 20 GB (or more). What we can do is to create a new simple volume on the unallocated disk. If there is a disk unallocated space, we will create a new disk by taking the amount of disk space required on the unallocated disk space, and then use the new disk in what concerns your personal files.

First of all, check if there is a disk not allocated/available in disk management. Follow these steps:

    • Press Windows + X , and then select Disk Management.
    • Check if there is a disk unallocated with readers. If you do not have a disk unallocated, then right-click on the drive (the operating system or drive "D") and select Volume Shrink.
    • Now, you'll find a disk unallocated in the lists. Click on a region unallocated hard disk, and then click New Simple Volume.
    • In the New Simple Volume Wizard, click Next.

    • Type the size of the volume you want to create in megabytes (MB) or accept the maximum default size, and then click Next.

    • Accept the default drive letter or choose a different drive letter to identify the partition, and then click on Next.

    • In the dialog box Formater Partition to format the volume with the default settings, click Next.

    • Review your choices and then click Finish.

    • Now a new drive will be created and it will be displayed in the file Explorer.

Check if it solves the problem.

  • DRS storage - storage pools

I was wondering about a question; If I don't have storage DRS (Enterprise license, no company +) then he even would have no value to set up storage pools (Cluster data store)?  Most of the literature on Clusters of data store is all about storage DRS, but if I don't have that, so what's the advantage?

Environment of small size; 8 guests, 70 guests.

True, Ent + is necessary for automatic migration drives VMDK, but you can still use the maintenance mode on a data store and the kickoff of the migration of storage. In addition, there is still the feature of initial implementation of a group of data store that still work without SDR, which is quite handy.

But, you are right that most of the magic of a data cluster store is coupled to also have storage DRS, I hope that answers your question.

  • T110 II - Windows 2012R2 Storage Pool corrupts every reboot

    Hello

I have a brand new II T110 and added two HGST sister NAS (6 TB) drives for the drive of 1 TB SATA boot and load 2012R2.  Boot drive works fine.

HGST both drives are in the detected (Auto) BIOS and Windows can see very well.  If I created a Storage Pool and readers, all is well.  I create the pool, to a mirrored virtual disk and then place a volume on it.  Everything works very well.

I then reboot the server and the Storage Pool faints and disks show metadata corrupted.  I can reset the readers and recreate a pool and the same thing happening at each reboot.

HGST reader tool retrieves the two disks and they test ok, so I think that wise things of material should be ok.  Two storage spaces Windows is so broken for discs 6 TB, or there is some other incompatibility with these drives, HGST.

Anyone who has used 6 TB SATA disks in a T110 II and know all the problems?

    Thank you

As I do not leave messages without answer, the answer is my server Dell PowerEdge T110 II was also recording event 129 ' restore the device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued "and 153 of the event" the i/o operation to the logical block address 0 x 0 for disk 2 (name AOP: \Device\00000043) was retries. "for two disks in the pool of storage at boot time.  Apparently, this then causes the shoot to disconnect.  Despite a re-navigate reads correctly readers.

On moving a channel SATA 2-1 disc (the second disc is on 3) one of the disks is no longer this set at startup and if Windows can initialize the storage pool that he can read the drive meta data.  The two drives appear healthy when initialization is complete.

No idea why this server records these events because the readers/server otherwise appear very well.  No Intel RST drivers do exist, so there is no way these errors impact software.

I guess it's a hardware or a bug in the BIOS using discs of 6 to on this server, but there is a solution.

Of course if the drive channel 1 past default offline there is a chance for the storage pool would not initialize because the drive channel 3 always gets this single e/s on startup error.  But a "Rescan" storage would bring it online.

  • vSphere 5 storage pools

I have a question about storage pools.

We have licensed Enterprise for our ESX servers, is it possible to create storage pools without activating "Storage DRS' witch requires Enterprise Plus license?

And is there a documentation for best practices for creating Storage Pools?

    Hello

Pushing the limits your use of the data store are very risky and could lead to a complete datatstore that goes down all virtual machines on it.

If you use no VMware snapshots of all this might be another story, but one must always be cautious about the use of the data store.

That said, here are my 2 cents on how to curb the amount of data store.

For example, let's say you LUN 20 x 1 TB, you keep the 10% which is 100 GB per LUN and gives you a total of 2 TB

First of all you can use provisioning you side storage.

-This means you only use the storage needed on the table, but be careful on the overcomitments

-This will allow you to use the 500GB unused space for LUN 20 reserve and use the rest for other purposes.

Second of all what you could move all your VMS vswap files to a dedicated less expensive storage.

-You must be careful with that, because if there is conflict of memory, you might have an impact on the huge performance.

Third point, you could use a provisioning on virtual machines. Use only the thin on storage or VMs, not both

-With this you could allocate less storage overcomit storage on the side of VMware and table.

-It must also be monitored closely and an alarm overcommit recommend to monitor that.

    See http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/VMware-DynamicStorageProv-WP-EN.pdf

Please allow points if you find this correct/good

  • Maintenance storage pool - table member F/W update

    Hi team,

I have a two members (PS-300E) iSCSI san with a default Pool spanning the two tables (8.7 to altogether). I need to update the firmware of each table without interruption of service.

There are two volumes. Vol1 (total size: 4 TB, used: 2.7 Tb) and Vol2 (total size: 1.2 to, used: 1.1 Tb)

    • Total used space so = 3.8 to
    • Total handset space flight = 5.2 Tb

Can I just create another pool (name pool maintenance and configure size little below the unique = 4.2 to table size), then move the volumes inside? -allowing me to restart another Bay.

It will fail if the combined total volume (CT 5.2) is larger than the size of pool maintenance (4.2 to), or you can migrate the two volumes to the new pool if there is enough free space in the volume. (3.8 to "used" is smaller than 4.2 to)

    Hope it makes sense

    TIA

A member of the Group may be in a pool at a time.  Create a pool without a member of the Group has no allocated storage until a member is added to the pool.  Volumes cannot be assigned to a pool in the pool, there is storage space.

3.3.1 firmware version is very old and update you will need to bring the FW to a step version.  In your case, you will need to do several FW updates (restart the table between the two) to the current version.

On the support site, you can display the required path of FW update to get the latest version (it's in the guide of the firmware update).

    You need something like:

    v3.x to v4.0.x

    then v4.0 to v4.1

    then the v4.1 to v4.3

    then v4.3 to v5.0

    then v5.0 to v5.2

    then v5.2 to v6.x

A reboot is required between each update.  To first the two tables the same version, and then upgrade to the next version.

Judging by the number of updates that you need, I suggest that support you a quick call so that they can go over the steps in more detail with you.
