Error cloning/Templating Windows 2008

I just put in place a new system and I have installed Win 2008 R2, Datacenter Edition on a cluster of ESXi 4.0 host computer.

Before I installed VM Tools in the comments, I could clone on the model (normal clone). However, as soon as I install the VM tools, I get the error attached almost immediately after the start of the process.

The other strange thing is that I can snapshot of the virtual machine (using the Snapshot Manager) no problem.

I noticed other people have had problems with this in win 2003 and I played with the options of VSS in the prompt - as suggested. It doesn't seem to be errors in the event if Viewer.

Any ideas?

Hi, I had the same problem, and I solved it install Windows 2008 R2.

You can try to clone the wen VM that the virtual machine is turned off and this medication would be ok.

The problem is that the clone when the virtual machine is turned off tried to squiece the guest operating system and which do not.

Remember that windows 2008 R2 is supported, bat is still experimental.

Sorry my English

Leandro.

  • cloning of windows 2008 R2 Server without reactivation

    Hi all

I'm trying to create an image of Windows 2008 R2 sysprepd using the vmware, but after cloning, I asks me to activate windows (I use a volume with a VL of Windows version license key). Initially, I turn it on but after cloning I have to reactivate. This occurs regardless if sysprep was run or not. Can someone point me in the right direction on how to fix this? I try to avoid reactivating Windows, so I don't have to start contacting Microsoft, after reaching the number of activations.

I have not been able to locate a post with the same subject, however if there is one please let me know where to find it.

  • Cloning of Windows Server 2008 R2 / SID options with VMWare

    Hi all

I'm trying to deploy virtual machines to a basic model of Windows 2008 R2 Standard (64-bit) and I was wondering what is the best way to give my unique msn cloned VMS?

Basically, I see that NewSID does not work on R2. I tried to run sysprep - & gt; Generalize about the clones of R2 (area experience off), but after restarting the virtual machine must be re-activated (enter the product key and activate again). In addition, VMWare tools no longer - I found that I have to uninstall and reinstall to get it working again, so the console mouse sensitivity goes down the drain. My screen resolution is also indented by default in the virtual machine and anything on the desktop is erased.

Running sysprep like this just doesn't seem to be an option, because there is too much of what needs to be sorted again once the clone is done. I might as well be reinstalling the OS on a fresh virtual machine. Is that all I'm missing with sysprep? Sort of leave him alone he put the SID and nothing else?

It would also be interesting to know what the guys who run Windows 2008 R2 64-bit with VMWare use (VI / ESX 3.5) when it comes to cloning or to deploy multiple virtual machines from a template.

For example, I just want to be able to clone my base model and get a new SID on each clone that I do. So I want to have another model that has a few additional features or roles installed in Windows and be able to clone from that too. For example, a model of Terminal Server.

    See you soon!

However, I doubt management will believe that article directly at the exit (even if its written by Mark himself)-this process of newSID'ing is as far as I can see in their heads. May take a while to convince them otherwise.

If this information on the website of Russinovich doesn't convince them of the contrary, it will be interesting.

As far as I can tell from this article, as long as I clone models VM that are already part of a domain, I should be fine. In other words if I have a model pre-configured, but are not part of a domain (that is always in a working group) I should be fine if I had to clone 10 of them and put them all on the same network right? From there, I could then take one of these 10 clones, convert to a domain controller, and then take the remaining 9 and add them to this new domain members and all servers should be good - no conflicts or funny happens things of the AD?

Yes, let the models out of the area and let the sysprep/customization to join them upward when it is deployed.  As long you run sysprep, or through customization, or manually, there should be no problem in AD.

I guess I always look for an alternative to newsid just to adapt to this as 'political', said at this stage. How you guys don't deploy R2 2008, VMs of clones?

None of my clients went to U1 or U5 at the moment, there is no R2 2008 deployment in place.  I'm guessing that a manual running sysprep deployed virtual machine might be the best thing to do at this point.

  • Windows 2008 Server Standard not install KB3099860 with error code 8000FFFF

    Hello

I look after 3 x Windows 2008 Standard Edition servers. Two of them to date very well and are up to date with updates. One of them however, which is identical in hardware to either of the other two and even fewer programs (we use it as a simple file server), fails on the last update released December 2015:

KB3099860 a security update for the .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2 in Windows Vista Service Pack 2 and Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2: 8 December 2015

I tried a variety of things after having studied the problem these past few days, including:

1 Uninstalling some updates before this one and see if they re - install. They are all re - install fine until I get to it where it fails with 8000FFFF error code so this leads me to believe that this is not in itself a problem with updates

    2. manually and also linking this Microsoft 'fixit': http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/windows-update-error-8000ffff

    3. how to install the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Server 2008 that installs but does not report errors

    4. manually by downloading the fix and trying to install - does not work.

    5. all the details here: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/ae6e81e9-5c49-4826-89bc-04a676992706/error-8000ffff-windows-server-2008?forum=winservergen

including rename them the folder C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution Windows Update and giving of right on drive C for "Network Services" - still does not work.

    6. as it is associated .NET I tried to repair .NET facilities that exist on the server (2, 3, 3.5 and and re-apply updates, but even once, fails on it.)

So, what should I do now? The behavior may suggest that it is that only this particular associate .NET that is a failure and that future ones will work, but it's "critical" and which relates to the .NET version which is initrinsic to the Windows 2008 operating system I think I should get it fixed :)

    Any thoughts?

  • Upgrade to Windows 2008 R2 SP1 - error code: DS_S_SUCCESS (0x0)

I don't know why, but I keep getting this error code no matter what I do.  It seems that the upgrade has completed, but when I connect to the box I have 'Installation failed' with the error code "DS_S_SUCCESS (0x0).  It is not sensible for me as this success would be good right?

I managed to install SP1 in a different area of Windows 2008 R2 as well.  So I do not understand why it would fail.

In any case, the error code appears when using the stand-alone installer for x 64 SP1.

After reset manually Windows Update and then attempt the update through Windows Update, it worked.

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/971058

I guess something is wrong in the standalone installer that could conflict with something else.  I received the error message has no sense.  DS_S_SUCCESS = error code?  Is not supposed.

  • Cannot add Windows Vista PC to Windows 2008 domain. Error message: an attempt to resolve the DNS of a domain controller in the domain being joined has failed...

When you try to add a new computer Windows Vista (hqseven) to a Windows 2008 network, I get the following error message... "An attempt to resolve the DNS of a domain controller in the domain being joined has failed. Ensure that this client is set to reach a DNS server that can resolve DNS names in the target domain. "Last year, I added two XP, a Windows 7 and another Vista box to the field.  I don't know why I can't add my new Windows Vista computer.

I am able to get on the internet with the Vista PC. I can RDP to the domain controller (hqserver64) or any client. (using the name of host or static IP)  I can also do a ping of the domain controller (DC) or any another computer on my network using the host name.

After initial search for information, I found the following error message when you do a nslookup from my new vista box.

    Nslookup mydomainname
    Server: hqserver64.mydomainname.net

    Address: 192.168.0.99

hqserver64.mydomainname.NET cannot find mydomainname: Server failed.

I do not understand why I suddenly get these error messages when I was able to reach this area in the past.

As for your suggestion concerning the audit of the controller and then using vSphere converter, do you want to say I point the converter on the VMDK 'broken' and choose a Machine configuration option?

What you can do with VMware Converter, is to run the Machine "set up" against the power off VM (simply select the virtual computer after connecting to the host or vCenter). I mentioned to check the controller before doing this, because this controller is the default configuration for the operating system you use.
