You need to change the boot sequence:

At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu

Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.

It cannot be used to install or reinstall Windows Vista, and is just a Windows PE interface to recovering your PC. My problem: Windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing or damaged. Status: Oxc000014C

I tried everything the sytem advised through SafeMode etc... Also, I tried to reload my OS - last updated through the windows update site. However, he did not - probably because all updates from MS, which means that it would not load from the DVD.

It's a whole new system customized with MS Vista 64 bit, Office 2007 Untimate, Asus MB, 250 GB HD ATI video card. I used Vista for almost a year and had no problems until today. All of the original software.

I have my thesis and several files, I was working on someone - I was doing consulting work to supplement my income as a student... Unfortunately, when I finally used my system last night it was ok. Now I canoe get my system up and running.

    Mark Merci for your comments.

I found myself communicating directly with Microsoft and they were able to get my system up and running without losing me data. Hooray for Microsoft!

My system is back to normal and I am assuring you that all my files are backed up on DVD.

  • Unable to laod Windows because the system registry file is missing or damaged

Is there a way to restore a corrupt registry file?

usually, when you receive a message citing the "missing" files, then it may be simply that they became not indexed by the master file table, e.g. mft.

a check disk running will be re - indexing the file system.

so if the computer is everything just starts plu, then you will have to start with a windows cd and get to the prompt of disk and run the commands >: chkdsk /r

Incidentally, I don't know if you could use a bootable xp cd to boot the recovery console.

Recovery discs would be Windows Vista installation files.  It would be safe to use if they are needed when the sfc/scannow scanning.

A recovery disc is a general term for media containing a backup State initial factory or a favorable condition of a computer such as configured by an OEM manufacturer or an end user. OEM supplied recovery media is usually comes with most computers to allow the user to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the operating system and preloaded software as it was when it was shipped.

You have a hardware problem any.  Here are some tips for troubleshooting hardware problems, but they are fundamental and I guarantee you you will succeed with them (and some options should be analyzed with spare parts which you probably haven't) but it's worth a shot. http://elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Hardware_Tshoot.

If this does not help, then it's time to hold a workshop of computer repair of reputable (NOT Geek Squad or one of these centers of department store) or return to the manufacturer for diagnosis and repair.  Check out several options and compare the costs, quality and guaranteed and then make your best choice.  Don't forget to back up your data before sending or bring it because there is a good chance they're going to wipe the hard drive clean in the process.

I'm sorry he has reached this point, but we have exhausted all other options and it is the only remaining option.

I hope this helps and that the problem is simple and inexpensive to repair.

    Good luck!
