? Error: stacks overflow running an old back program

I'm trying to run an old DOS program in Vista and XP and get this error message:

? Error: stack overflow
Error code 2000
PC = A748: 0006; SS = 4 CA 1, FP = 0006, SP IS A734
The program used to work fine a few months ago, but now nothing.
I tried adding "STACKS = 64, 512' config.nt and which did not help."
Can someone help me make it work?
Thank you

If the program is not compatible, then you try to install and run the program in compatibility mode.
Use the following steps:
(1) right click on the program
2) click Properties
3) click on the Compatibility tab
(4) select run this program in compatibility mode and select Windows Vista or other operating system, the program has been run successfully.

Check out the link here: make sure to run older programs in this version of Windows
http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/make-older-programs-run-in-this-version-of-Windows

If you are running Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate version, install Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP mode (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/default.aspx) and run your software in Windows XP.

If you run Windows 7 Home Premium, you cannot run Windows XP mode, but you can try VirtualBox (www.virtualbox.org) or VMware Player (www.vmware.com), or any other 3rd party software virtualization and install a separate copy of Windows XP (family or professional edition) for this purpose. You can find the virtualization software free that will run on Windows 7 Home Premium.

For a program of oldest back, I saw DosBox recommended by others. I think it's a free program. You may need to do some research.

Thank you

Maybe it's that your app is trying to do something that Windows 7 simply does no more - with some changes things has changed and some applications no longer work.

There is a "Windows XP Mode" for Windows 7 that you can download for free from Microsoft-

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx - this would allow you to run your application in what is essentially a virtual machine running Windows XP figure and thus behave as such.

I would recommend that you take this approach and check.

Original title: program compatibility Application Applications App Apps game games Legacy Crash crashes Hang hangs

I get this message when you try to run an old MS-DOS - based program in Win-7 Ultimate 64-bit.

"The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you are using. Check your computer system information to see whether you need a x 86 (32 bit) or x 64 (64-bit) version of the program and then contact the software publisher. »

I understand that I am under a 64 bit OS, but is it possible to get this program to run? I was wondering if anyone has tips :)

    Hi Bcopeland,

Thanks for posting your question in the Microsoft Community.

Based on the information, you are trying to install and use an old ms - dos program based in Windows-7 Ultimate 64-bit.

The problem is a software that was created for Windows 95, 98, and Windows XP has no way to work correctly with an operating system that didn't even exist when the software was written. However, the error message you get normally means that you have a 32-bit software that you are trying to install on a 64-bit system.

You can check the compatibility of the program with Windows 7, in the Compatibility Center.

    Compatibility Center

If the program is not compatible, then you try to install and run the program in compatibility mode.

    a. click right on the program.

    b. click Properties.

    c. click on the tab compatibility.

    d. Select run this program in compatibility mode and select Windows Vista or whatever to use the system, the program was executed successfully.

Here is an article that gives you more information on this:

Make older programs in this version of Windows

If the problem persists, you can get in touch with the software vendor to see for the latest version of the program to use the same system of 64-bit Windows 7.

    Hope the helps of information.

  • Can I run an old program BACK under Vista?

Is it possible to run an old program BACK on a Vista operating system. either 32 or 64 bit?

I found a simple painless 3rd party open source solution. It is simply done by running a BACK EMU called Dosbox.

Use the latest version of www.dosbox.com.

Read the easy to understand by the Doc for the command line interface commands. Worked perfectly the first time to run an old (something 80) BACK ASCII B & W strategy game that I use to start BACK on a 4 platform mghz v3.2 clone IBM XT.
  • The on line 28 error Vista stack overflow

I get a popup that says: on line 28 what is the stack overflow - this? It freezes everything up. I can't click it closed.

Help me solve this problem. Thank you

Stacks are reserved memory that programs use to treat the material events. A stack overflow occurs when there is not enough space in memory to run the hardware interrupt routines. To resolve these problems, you can change the "STACKS =" line in the Config.sys file, eliminating the program to put end to-and-stay-resident (TSR) and eliminate hardware conflicts.

When Windows gives an error message that is related to an internal stack overflow, there is not enough space in memory either set aside, to be available to handle calls that are made to the hardware. There are several things to consider when you troubleshoot this problem.

It takes a lot more information before we can help you.

  • Hi, I have an error message "online stack overflow: 0,

the error message "online stack overflow: 0" appears only on ebay and only on a specific and ad?, when it locks the screen leaving the only solution is to turn the computer off and start again, as an absolute novice I have no idea what that means or how to pass, please help. "» Cheers, william.

    Hi williammolloy,

    1. did you of recent changes on the computer?

    2. what web browser do you use?

    3. do you have security software installed on the computer?

Try the following steps only if you are using Internet explorer as your web browser.

    Method 1

Check if Add-ons installed on the Internet explore is the origin of the problem. I suggest that you open Internet Explore mode without modules and check if the problem persists.

    (a) click the Start button, click all programs, and click Accessories

    (b) click System Tools, click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

How the modules of the browser affect my computer?

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/how-do-browser-add-ons-affect-my-computer

Note: Above article also applies to Windows XP.

    Method 2

If the previous step fails then try to reset the internet settings explore by default and check if it helps.

For more information, see the article.

How to reset Internet Explorer settings

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/923737

Important: Reset Internet explore its default configuration. This step will disable also any add-ons, plug-ins or toolbars that are installed. Although this solution is fast, it also means that, if you want to use one of these modules in the future, they must be reinstalled.

They will run under DosBox, but they run more slowly you might like.

I have about 30 programs in-depth that I wrote and compiled under QuickBasic MS years ago and their autonomous update under the name of .exe files. Unfortunately Microsoft support more base fast and the programs will not work with Vista or 7. They will run under the BACK window, but they run too slowly it. My programs are very complex. In fact, they treat each pixel on the screen.
I would like to convert it into another language, or even rewrite it, but Microsoft argues that they do not have a program to support. They said maybe I could do this in Visual Studio Professional, but they want about $700 for this software.
    Do you have any suggestions?
    Thank you

Try to put the system to the boot and check if that helps.

Clean boot allows the system starts with the minimum set of drivers and startup programs and also he will try to eliminate software conflicts when you try to install or to run or update a program. It will help you to find where the problem occurs.

  • If 'error exe win32 not valid' and the program runs what are the consequences

running 32-bit applicaation on win 7 and receive "not valid win32 application" error message.    the application continues and it seems to work, but what are the consequences of running the application?

    Hi Wayne,

Get the error: not a valid 32-bit application can have several origins:

I have listed some of them below.

File is corrupted, bad or missing:

Ø If the hard disk is damaged or bad, it can cause work programs to fail, either because not all data can be read from the hard disk the program is damaged on the drive. Run scandisk and defrag on the hard disk to check for potential errors.

O if you run the program from a shortcut on the computer, verify that the program is still on the computer. In some cases if the program is no longer installed on the computer, you can get this error.

File is not designed for your version of Windows:

Ø If you try to run a program that is not designed for your version of Windows, you can get this error.

Ø although many old programs designed to work in older versions of Windows work with new versions of Windows, unfortunately, not all programs will work.

O if the program is an earlier MS-DOS program or start program Windows, you will get this error.

Ø If the program is designed for a 64-bit version of Windows and you are running in a 32-bit version of Windows, it does not work and generates this error.

File is a virus, worm or other malware file:

Ø this error can be generated by a file that is a virus, worm, Trojan horse or other type of malware file. Often, this will result because the antivirus installed on the computer will not allow the file to install or run. Try to analyze the file to check, it is not a virus or infected.

O if the file has been checked and is clean, it is always possible that the virus protection program or another program installed on the computer is causing issues when installing or running the program. Start the computer in Mode safe and try to run the program. start the computer in Mode safe will be that nothing is running in the background that could cause this problem.

    Hardware incompatibility:

Ø If you get this error during the installation of a program, it is also possible that the CD-ROM drive or the drive that you are installing the program from is not compatible with Windows or has drivers that are not compatible with Windows.

O download the latest drivers for your CD player or other of the manufacturer of the computer or the manufacturer of the equipment. (Microsoft does not pilot for other materials)

Hope one of the suggestions above will help with your problem.
