  I got the student version software Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Design Premium for several years now.

  When I got my computer Windows 8 I installed the software without problem.

I installed photoshop using the disk on my PC after that first of all, I bought the product and I'm now trying to set up on my new mac.   No, you can run software Win on Mac or Mac on Windows.  They use serial numbers.  A swap of platform/language is now available for Creative Suite 6 qualifying products. CS5 is no longer eligible.  He's too old.

  My advice is to get a subscription to creative cloud.  You can have multiple versions installed-by-side (CS6, CC2014, CC 2015) and you can install on Win, Mac, or both.
