.lnk are shortcut files (shortcuts are usually what you have on your desktop and the start menu).  If inadvertently, you tried to right click on a shortcut and choose "open with...". ", you can breaking their properties.

Because the associations are complex and the registry can be dangerous, the best way to solve your problem is to use the system restore to fix system associations when returning parameters at the same time that they last worked properly.  Here's how:

1 - Hold down the Windows key and type R to open the Run dialog box.

3 - follow the instructions to restore your system at a time before, it was working fine.

  • After the removal of a virus, shortcuts are now asking what program to open it with Vista

I have kaspersky anti virus and it has detected a virus, deleted and I thought everything was fine, but when I click on something like the calculator, Notepad, firefox, whatever it is, it asks me to choose what program I want to open it instead of open it automatically. This isn't a big deal, but it is very irritating and annoying. Other profiles on my computer seem to be. The account is not an administrator account, but has information, I want to keep. Any advice would be appreciated. I ran several other spyware and antivirus scans and all my computer ratio is not affected. Thanks again

I have windows vista and when I click on a shortcut on the desktop I have a pop up asking what file to open it with. In order to open the file I find the actuall file. This also occurs when you download the software, which makes it difficult, because the file is not on the pc yet. All solutions?

Looks like you may have a virus or other malware. Get your updated antivirus program and boot into Safe Mode. Note that some viruses can hide from your normal antivirus program, so you really need to scan in Safe Mode. To enter in Safe Mode when you turn on first, press F8 on every seconds until you get the menu, and then select Safe Mode. Then run a complete system scan.

If that suits him fine. If this is not the case, use system restore to go back to an earlier date at the beginning of the problem. To run system restore, click Start-> programs-> Accessories-> System Tools-> system restore. Click on the box that says show more restore points.

You can check the corrupted system files. Open an administrator command prompt and run SFC if the above does not help. Click START, and then type sfc in the search box, right-click to SFC. EXE and click run as administrator. Then, from the command prompt type sfc/scannow.

Finally if all else fails, you can look at the rather cryptic system event log. To make, click Start-> Control Panel-> administration-> event viewer tools. Once in Event Viewer system log-click and scroll entries looking for these "error" with indicator see if you can find guidance on where the problem may be.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

  • 'Open with' pop up at startup and during the session asking what file to open CHKUPD with. CHKUPD has no extension. Search does not find it.

My problem is similar to the question asked by EamonnO.  Start a 'open with' screen opens asking what file to open chkupd with.  I think that hit "Cancel" would put an end to the action.  He appears periodically during my session on the computer or watching a movie.  I don't find the file using search.  I don't think that this means Daemon Tools because I never downloaded the program.  Some recent downloads include "Free File Viewer" and "Search for free Extension".  I have Vipre AV and System Mechanic running on my computer.  The situation may be harmless, but it is sure agrivating.  Thanks for any help you offer.  George

    Hello

I had the same problem and there to remedy I just open the control panel and open then "Add / Remove programs.  The popup is apparently caused by a free File Viewer program.  I removed the program by clicking on the button Delete and the problem disappeared.  The free file viewer comes with a conversion program free .mp3 and seems to be completely unnecessary (I never needed the viewer of the file and open it with popup that was originally was boring and sometimes even nervewracking.)  If you do not have to uninstall programs of assistance, just the viewer of the file that comes as a free supplement program (problem).

Once again, removal procedure: click on 'start '.
    Click on "Control Panel."
Double click on "Add or remove programs".
Click on "Free File Viewer" in the list of programs
    Click 'delete '.

After this, the 'chkupd' open with popup when it stops appearing.

  • Why can't open my windows files to message asking you what program to open it with XP

Each windows file or the program I try to open gives me a screen that says to choose a program to open this file.  I can't even access the system restore.

It seems that your system is infected by the virus, update your antivirus and run a full scan of the system in safe mode.

essentially removed WinRAR via CCleaner and now it asks me to choose a program to open another program with (AO, Firefox, Avast, etc...) and the icons of these are missing. I also tried to uninstall some programs but did not work.

I'm sorry, I just realized that I posted in XP, but I needed it in vista... It's my bad... but will it work for vista?

No problem. Click HERE for the fix for Vista.

  • In Vista, all files lost association, constantly asked what program to open a file with

First of all, whenever I try to open certain files, such as Internet Explorer, paint, or whatever it is, I get the "choose the program you want to use to open this file", and it has not happened before. Along with this, the little thing bar in the lower right corner of the screen (which includes the Volume, time and everything) never ends load when I turn on the computer. I think I have a virus and spin the Virus Scan right now (AntiVir, to be precise, which I think will remove whatever it is detected). Two days ago pop-ups randomly came quite often, even when I'm not all Internet Windows running. It arrived yesterday and for the most part, everything was fine, but today is that occur at startup problems mentioned at the beginning of this post. I tried to search for solutions to this online, and some Web sites suggested to open the Task Manager and try to fix something here. But unfortunately, I can't even open the Task Manager. CTRL Alt Del does nothing, and when I right click on the taskbar, Task Manager option is grayed out. Any immediate response will be greatly appreciated, and if there is any other information I can provide, let me know.

    * original title - Hey everyone, I have some problems with my computer and I don't know how to fix them *.

OK, so it seems I did. I think I deleted everything that I needed to and restarted my computer. It seems that everything works fine however. Only new concern I have is some box kept popping up when I turned my computer saying 'Bad Image' or something. But it no longer occurs. I'll be restart my computer later to see if still appears once, but overall, everything is fine.

Thank you very much for your support and help guys

Edit: Pop up comes again. It is said

C:\ProgramData\logilaka/logilaka.dll is not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try to install the program by using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the provider of software for support.

I'm glad to hear that Malwarebytes worked for you!

    It's a good program.

It seems that the "logilaka.dll" is Malware.

It seems that you still have a problem, either with the malware, or remnants of it.

Make sure that Malwarebytes is fully updated in Normal mode that you run in Vista.

Once this is the case, restart and go to Safe Mode using the method "press F8" > rescan your system with Malwarebytes again.

    How to use Malwarebytes:

    1. open Malwarebytes > click the update tab at the top > get the latest updates.

    2. on the Scanner tab, make sure that the Perform full scan option is selected and then click on the Scan button to start scanning your computer

3 MBAM will now start to scan your computer for malware. This process can take some time.

    4. when the scan is complete, a message box will appear

    5. you must click on the OK button to close the message box and continue the process of Malwareremoval.

    6. you will now be at the main scanner screen. At this point, you must click on the button to view the result .

    7. a screen showing all of the malware displayed the program that is

    8. you must now click remove selection button to remove all the listed malware. MBAM will now delete all of the files and registry keys and add them to the programs quarantine. When you remove files, MBAM may require a restart in order to eliminate some of them. If it displays a message stating that it needs to restart, please let him do. Once your computer has rebooted, and logged in, please continue with the remaining steps.

    9. when MBAM has finished remove the malware, it will open the scan log and display it in Notepad. See the log as desired, and then close the Notepad window.

    10. you can now exit the MBAM program.

  • Why Windows asking me what program to open a JNLP file with after you have installed Java?

I'm having a problem with a Web site that uses the Java Web Starter program to launch an application.

I use Windows 7 Professional 64 - bit and IE9. I also tried this on 10 IE and Chrome and had the same problem. I am running update of Java 7 21, which, at the time of this writing, is the latest version of Java available. I only have this problem on a computer.

When I go on the Web site, a window wonder if I want to open, save, or cancel a file called Meeting.JNLP. If I open it, he asks me to choose a program to open it with. When I navigate to javaws.exe in the Java folder in program files, I have highlighted, click Open, and then I went back to the "Choose a program" screen, but the Starter Web Java program does not appear as a choice. I can choose other Java executables from the same folder, and they appear in her choose a program window, but not the Starter Web Java program.

I can actually force the application to start if I do a "save under" on this original popup, then go to a command prompt and use javaws.exe , and in fact, it will launch the application. However, I need to function normally, directly from the Web site.

I tried to reinstall Java 5 or 6 times. Each post on the forum I find dealing with these issues of file association told me to use the file Association in the Control Panel, which is exactly what does not work. It seems that the installer is all simply not able to associate the program Java Web Starter of JNLPs. is it possible I can force a new association to file through the command line or the registry?

    Thank you!

Thanks Jessen, earlier this morning, I found the assoc and ftype commands and managed to force the association in this way. I did this from an elevated command prompt:

    ftype JNLPFile = "C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin\javaws.exe" '%1 '.

    .Jnlp Assoc = JNLPFile

And that the file is associated. Thank you for your response.

    Hello
This problem occurs when your .exe file associations are broken. This is usually caused by malicious software that changes the default file associations in Windows. Follow these instructions to resolve this problem:
Then try following the steps in this virus/malware removal guide: http://www.selectrealsecurity.com/malware-removal-guide
