Yes. Just having ESX4 running if your guests are 32-bit or 64-bit, we saw the best performance all around.  In addition, something worth looking at are VMmark results

  • ESXi41 and ESX4 vMotion

    Hello

I would like to get some advice, we currently use 4 * VMware ESX4 with 1 * vCentre 4.0 and were in the status of the migration to ESXi4.1.

We already have the 4.1 vCentre installation program and an ESX4.1 server in the new environment, our plan is to one both withdraw our ESX4 of the vCentre4.0 and join the vCentre4.1 environment.

What I would like some advice:

    with vCentre 4.1 we can form a cluster of ESX 2Node with 1 * ESX4.0 and 1 * ESXi4.1

We are able to vMotion VM between the server ESX4.0 and ESXi4.1

We can HA VM between the server ESX4.0 and ESXi4.1

the reason for using this approach is that we want to move slowly on 4 * vCentre 4.0 to latest vCentre4.1 ESX4.0, once all the ESX joined vCentre 4.1 server we will then upgrade each ESX4.0 to ESXi 4.1.

    Thank you very much

You should be able to mix the types of version without any problems at all.  This is similar to how we migrated to 4.1 and of course we are migration to ESXi a little at a time.

  • Generate reports for ESX, VM, RAM, and CPU use list

How will generate you a report for the list of ESX, VM, RAM and CPU used in your VSphere environment?

    Hello

You can either use vCenter performance dashboards, select the chart options and chose the resource & corresponding metrics or select the host of the vSphere client, and then click file > report > summary of the host or Performance.

    Does that help?

  • Get the list of virtual machines on an ESX host specific and dumping of .csv in a specific format

I have problems to find a way to get a list of virtual machines on an ESX host specific and then he dumped to a .csv in the following format

    I use the get-vmhost esxhostname | Get - vm

but everyhting else after, it is where I am lost...  I think the closest I had been posting the output with a goofy header and format 'vm1, vm2, vm3 "...

    name

    computer 1 name

    computer 2 name

    name of the machine 3

to use for later use.  Any help would be appreciated.

You must use the Select-Object cmdlet to specify more precisely the properties you want.

The Export-Csv doesn't know how to manage the virtual computer object.

    Something like that

    Get-vmhost esxhostname | Get - vm | Select name. Export Csv.\report.csv - NoTypeInformation - UseCulture

  • sharing between ESXi3.5 and ESX4 vmfs volume

Is it possible to share a LUN with a vmfs between ESXi3.5 and ESX4 servers?

IM upgrading to ESX4 and wanted to know if I can share the volume between the old and new guests and migrate virtual machines gradually. I read that the vmfs specification has not changed between 3.5 and 4, it should be possible to share beween 3.5 and 4.

Is it possible?, supported?, not recommended?

    Hello

I assume you mean shared storage?

To answer your question. Yes that is supported and this is the route that most of the people.

    Storage is compatible.

As soon as you upgrade virtual hardware of your virtual machine it can be started from a vSphere host.

  • due to different VC Console ESX 3.0 and ESX3.5

all times can help me understand why esx 3.0 and 3.5 is using a different version of Virtual Center.

For me, this is little uncomfortable because I'm managing different places, running with esx 3.0 and esx 3.5 and vice versa. Anyone know if the same console can be used for this purpose.

  • Difference between Esx v 2 and 3 and ESX 2.5 and 3.5

    Hello

I want to know the differences between ESX V.2 and 3 and ESX 2.5 and 3.5. can someone help me on respect.

    Karthik.

    Hello

The biggest difference between ESX 2.x and 3.x is how the virtualization of the boots as well as configurations of network virtual host.

In ESX 2.x booted Linux then VMware took control.

In ESX 3.x VMware started then place the unit of management within a virtual machine started.

ESXi boots the vmkernel then starts a Posix environment in the vmkernel.

The book of VMware ESX Server in the enterprise passes over these differences in a bit of detail, if you are interested.

Yes, you will be able to vmotion between 3.5 and 4.0

  • Mix of ESX 3.5 and VMware ESX in the same cluster

    Hello

I'm currently involved in ESX 3.5 Migrating virtual machines to a new vSphere environment.  All ESX 3.5 hosts running on obsolete kit and will be decomm had at the end of the project.  All hosts are managed by the same server vCenter.

The only problem is, I have to add an additional ESX4 server, but there is not enough available physical switch ports.  I have decomm one ESX3.5 servers in order to free ports, but they run at 2 knots, and I will lose redundancy if a hardware problem arises.

    My proposed Solution: -.

I think decomming ESX3.5 host 1 and move it to the new vSphere cluster.  The type of brand/model/CPU is different between the old and the new servers and I am not concerned by VMs DRS'ing between 2 environments, however, I understand that I have would be protected by HA if anything disastrous happened.  All hosts are connected to the same storage.

You don't see any problem with that?

You can have a mixed cluster, but this must be managed by vCenter 4.x.

And you also need a license for the former hosts of 3.x server.

    HA will work.

If the CPU is compatible VCA, then as VMotion, DRS, VCA will work.

  • Migration/cloning between ESX3.5 and ESX4

We have a server to update 1 of vcenter 4.0 vsphere with ESX3.5 hosts.

Once we improve some of our guests to ESX4, can we migrate/clone between 3.5 and 4.0 guests?  (no vmotion, clone/migrate just standard).

I wasn't sure if there are changes to the "material" to the VM themselves.  Or that don't apply to the new virtual machines built directly on ESX 4?

    Thank you

    Shane

vSphere supports VMS created in VI-3 (Hardware version 4) and vSphere (Hardware Version 7). So no there is no need to upgrade your virtual machines - but you will not get the improvedfunctionality of the virtual hardware Version 7 as mempry, vcpus, replaceable virtual material hot, etc. - discover http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40_u1/vsp_40_u1_upgrade_guide.pdf of appropriate means upgrade to vSphere.

  • ESX Lab: VM on esx4 on esx4, it works?

    Hello

I just bought a sc1435 server at low price to make a test lab esx4,

I installed esx4 run 3 x esx4 inside (and all virtual machines on esx real are Ok), but when I create VMS on esx virtual, VM starts with no bios, screen and 100% CPU, in white

Is it related to the opteron processor as I saw on another forum? ( http://www.vcritical.com/2009/05/vmware-esx-4-can-even-virtualize-itself/ ),

y at - it a hack to fix the problem?

    Kind regards.

    Nicolas

Because of a bug in the first release of AMD - V, ESX 4 supports only AMD - V and family 10 H processors later.  Your processor is family 0FH, ESX 4 does not support AMD - V on this processor.  See products VMware and hardware support for virtualization (VT-x/AMD-V).
