ESX 3.5 og provisioning

Hej

vmkfstools 15G - c d thin /vmfs/volumes/vmfs_volume/VM_name/thin_disk.vmdk

ESX 3.5 og ESX4 korer toy VMFS3 Med. Der er dog en forskel alligevel. VMFS volumes of the fra en server har version 3.33 ESX4 opretter og fra en ESX 3.5 volumes har 3.31. (ESX 3.0 er version 3.21)

Under the en opgradering til jeg anbefaler vSphere to man is far loftet sine til nyeste version VMFS volumes. Det skal dog seats to ESX 3.0 kan med 3.33 og ESX4 kan med 3.21 kore kore osv.

Hello I got a guest running with ESXI for the first time, installed VMTools and defragmented (Win2008) operating system when you are connected to.

I see a lot of talk, but I don't see anything on how to shrink images comments defrag or even defrag VMware itself as a whole. Nothing in either helped. Can someone tell me how do? (no worry about why you devriez/should not a lot of info there :).

    Much appreciated!

    Thank you

    Alex

You cannot defragment the VMFS datastore file system.

The simplest method to reduce a record thin provisioned to recover empty space is to use VMware Converter or better Storage vMotion, if you have a license for this. With converter to change the data copy and choose to make the disc slightly smaller. Which will cause the converter to create a new virtual disk and make a copy of data files on the new disk.

    With Storage vMotion http://www.virtualizationteam.com/virtualization-vmware/vsphere-virtualization-vmware/vmware-esx-4-reclaiming-thin-provisioned-disk-unused-space.html

    Hi all

Is it possible to apply a provisioning in vCenter or ESX level?

    Best regards / yazri

    yazri,

I am unaware of the way in which only a provisioning can be applied to a newly created VMDK. I think that there is a configuration option required for the creation of new virtual machines, it is not possible to 'apply' only a provisioning.

  • VMware ESX 4.0 Update 1 with HP LeftHand P4500 Thin Provisioning (SAN based and client based?)

I know with ESX 4.0 that you now have the option to select a provisioning on the side of ESX.  I'm already thin provisioning my LUN on the left side.  I do both or just the side SAN?  Also, I heard some people say that it is better to use a block size of 8MB for best peformance of SAN, do you think it is recommended/best practices as well?  Thanks in advance.

The point to offer 8 MB block sizes is flexibility.  Because you cannot change the size of the block without reformatting the VMFS file system, you probably don't want to need to.  There is a great overview of a few points on this theme to the yellowwire from bricks.  I recommend you start here and follow the links.  It only takes 5-10 minutes, and you will be able to make your own choices.  For us, we're all migrate to blocks of 8 MB.

What about thin provisioning, I have no practical experience.  But here's my point: If you sell thin anywhere, you have a more complicated system to follow in terms of space put into service and space required.  Must be taken account of this that data may coming in the future, or you might run out of space.  So, I ask you where you want to configure the monitoring of the use of space and how you want to administer the storage.  If you want to do on the primary server, and then stick with that.  If you want your VMware administrators to manage management, then do it in VMware.

My recommendation: If you're already doing it on the back-end successfully, then stick with what you have.  Whatever it is, do it only in one place.  Otherwise, you're probably too complicate your configuration.

    Hi all

"I use vWorkspace 8.0.1 and lay out Windows 8 VM service but the problem is that I get the error message after VM provisioning '" virtualization management server reported any IP address to the computer "in the console vWorkspace.

I tried to find the problem and found that the virtual machine on the ESX Server in not connect not not the NETWORK adapter after provisioning from the model.

It is not question in the model as the provision of the vCenter VM is ok. ther is not question once we create VMS in vCenter. But when we try to provision vWorkspace VM, then it is in error.

Can anyone let me know the setting of the NETWORK adapter in the virtual machine commissioning through vWorkspace.

Please find the attached error screenshot.

    Environment-

    vWorkspace - 8.0.1

    ESX - 5.1

    vCenter - 5.1

    Additional accessories:

    Hi Alain,

Do you use Customizing to OS using vmware or sysprep vworkspace function. If you are using vmware options are trying to generate an empty image and deploy it using vworkspace with sysprep option.

I'm not familiar with your problem but I don't know that when you sysprep and the deployment of a server using vworkspace work perfectly.

Otherwise run your vmware customization to see if there is something wrong.

  • Out ESX clusters behind VPLEX?

    Hi all

We currently have several ESX cluster, sitting on a VMAX battery behind VPLEX. We want to keep the clusters on VMAX, but them out behind the table VPLEX (direct attach VMAX).

I'm primarily a storage analyst, so forgive me for my ignorance. The following three options (potential) I see:

    1. Provision of the new LUN directly from the VMAX, vMotion VMs on the new LUNS and LUN VPLEX decom. -I know that it will work, but it will take the most effort.
    2. Leave the LUNS connected VPLEX and join the same LUN to the cluster of the VMAX. -It would be easier, but I'm not confident, it would work, because the NAA disk is virtualized on the VPLEX. This would mean that the ESX cluster would see the same disk with two different numbers of NAA.
    3. Get a failure throughout the cluster, remove the VPLEX drives, fix again the same LUN directly from VMAX. -I think that it worked as long as VMWare can still recognize the virtual computer data once the disks are added re?

My question is, does anyone have experience with the #2 or #3? Either will work, or is there a better way?

    Any information is appreciated.

    Thank you

    Tanner

    Hi Depping,

We were going to conduct the tests, but we got useful information from the community of EMC support. They had this to say:

«.. . the VPLEX has its own cache of reading, so if a volume is written to out the VPLEX (directly at VMAX) cache will contain invalid data for blocks, because the VPLEX unaware they had been updated since the last time they were read from the disk, and you could get data corruption. »

In the light of this point, we decided to just direct new provision attached LUN of VMAX and vMotion if necessary. As with most stores, we cannot take a chance that something is messed up and we loose data.

    Thank you

OK, so you just need to do an Import-Csv inside the loop and change the variables accordingly.

  • provisioning machine time consuming (23 min)

We are currently experiencing a problem where the new machines being supplied take a long time

It currently takes 23mins which i belive he shouldn't be. the longest part seems to be the step of customization.

the VM seems sitting there at the opening screen of session for about 10-15 min then eventually restart and become available.

wtching customer events of vspere it

    the replica of the clones

    Adds a tag (2 s)

then, there are a couple of reconfigures vm (50sec)

then the power on the virtual machine (1 sec)

then some changes of allocating resources (2 min)

so the next thing is a message from 17 min host more later saying

    Message of

HostName: the VMware Tools package does not run in this virtual machine. The package may be necessary for the guest operating system to run at higher resolutions to 640 x 480 with 16 colors.

The package provides significant performance benefits. To install it, choose VM > install VMware Tools... after the guest operating system starts. VMware ESX can remind you to install the

VMware Tools package when you turn the virtual computer. Click OK to activate the reminder.

then he reconfigures the virtual machine a couple several times (1 min)

    Reboots(1min)

changes of allocating resources couple (1 min)

    then its ready to go.

It seems that something is not happy with vmware tools, but once the machine is up and running it is said that vmware tools is running and current.

took a look in the logs of the composer and in these were all that was there for the moment on the machine being provisions and they are in the 17-minute window.

  • Thin provision security issues

    Hello

I remember said that if you thin provisioned a disk and then used a file recovery tool it may be possible to read data from the underlying storage system.

I just did a quick google but I couldn't find anything,

It is never true. The documentation that I can find for v5 says that a disc thin provisioend returns 0 if it has not already been written in.

    Thank you

    Jeremy

The feature "fake zero" is what protects against that and as far as I know, is true since ESX thin VMDK support.

  • Question about thin provisioned disks

I did some searching but can't find specific answers, I need and I apologize in advance if these questions are public knowledge. I know also my setup is very small compared to most houses VMWare normally using these forums, but we are moving slowly in the 2nd Decade of the 21st century (or try).

I have a new install ESXi 5 and move during one ESX3 host that has about a dozen of VMs on it.  I recently built vCenter host servers and my future view connection server.  I'm kind to vCenter again as my previous installation of ESX 3 was a single server and us were not investing in the vCenter at the time option (missed a lot of features and ease of upgrade during this transition, but 20/20 declining).  I'm a little green in using vCenter so take pitty on my ignorance.

It's more time than I wanted to and I just want to know the best way to change these 2 servers (recently built and configured systems Win 2008 R2) to thin provisioned disks.  I need to keep all the storage space I can and beyond the obvious problem of being able to provide more space than you physically, I have no problem to do so (in addition to get them changed).  If there are negatives I'm missing, please report them to me.  The possiblities that I see are:

The clone and thin provision then delete the originals.

Use the stand-alone converter on them (from above).

Completely rebuild thin provisioned with disks.

If someone can give me a quick list of possible problems and pitfalls for these opportunities or to get to a better suggestion, please do so and thanks in advance.

    Manual of Clark

    PRIMOS Inc.

Since you have storage vMotion the clone or standalone VMware converter are both viable options.   Not sure about the disadvantages of these options.

You didn't say what kind of server it is, but I'm always careful about the cloning of the domain controllers.   Without the option for storage vmotion I rebuild a DC from scratch.

  • How to add SAN LUN in ESX of CLI?

    Hello people,

I work for a team of engineers to implementation, where our tasks involve the construction of about 15 bunches per month.

As part of build tasks, we end up consuming more time add the SAN LUN in the ESX servers all running ESX 4.1 through the Victoria Cross.

I understand that the vmkfstools command could help us create a partition vmfs3 on the LUN, but when I do it asks me to set the partition to 0xfb and I believe that we should use the parted for that utility.

I can't define it with a single command. My goal is to put these commands in a script to speed up the work.

  • Considerations, concerns or questions RE Thin Provisioning.

    Hey all,.

I have a question about a provisioning.  It seems that we have a debate about our team on the issue of whether we should use it as a policy.

We have a cluster 2 ESX 4.0 and ESX 3.5 environment all connected to EMC via NFS storage.

What should concern us, is there on the virtual computer performance problems if the storage starts to develop?  Should do us as a global policy or a policy according to the needs?  Can someone shed some light on this?

    Hello.

The biggest concern with a provisioning is that you have to manage it.  It is still something to keep an eye on.  Implementation of the alarms is the key, if you have vCenter.  For the workloads highest performance, there will be some additional latencies involved.  The thin disks will not work with VMware FT either.

    Good luck!
