ESX 3i with ServerAID 4-LX

Hello everyone. I'm new to VMware and have begun to explore by installing ESX Server 3i.

I have an IBM xSeries 440 with a ServerAID 4 - LX attached to a box of disks (IBM 2104 - UD3).

I installed ESX 3i 3.5.0 and because it doesn't have a service console, how to apply

or install a software package to manage the server drives (RAID)?

ESX server is installed by using internal disks (also 4-LX in RAID-1). Should I reinstall

ESX so that he will see the other readers of the compound controlled by the other RAID card?

Please notify.

Thank you!

Take a look at the user guide.  Apparently the software manager comes in a startable CD format also is used to configure an operating system is installed.  This seems to be what you need.

    Hello everyone,

I have a question about switching configurations.

I have 2 ESX servers with 2 network for LAN traffic cards each.

    vmnic0 to switch1

    vmnic1 in the switch2

the two switches are shared resources to the spine.

My question is what do I have to configure something on the vswitch or switch1 and switch2 or simply to connect the cables and to feel happy?

    concerning

    Dennis

Unless you have a special Setup and many customers with access to the virtual machine, I do not think that the aggregation of links (with vSwitches standard it is limited in any case) will make a difference. Please take a look at for example http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1004048 to see what is supported or not.

  • Naming of the ESX hosts with the underscore. Best practices?

I was curious as to what that the general eager to name the ESX hosts with underscores "_". I found an old post in 2006 related to it:

    http://communities.vmware.com/thread/64885

In the thread, it is usually frowend against because she not compling with DNS internet naming standards. The underscore character is not recognized by the Web servers.

He has been wondering if there would be no advantage to include similar underscore characters with no routable ip subnets, 192.168.x, 10, etc...

If you have designed it correctly you already have your hosts on a subnet that is not routable, so you would get no real benefit.

Beyond this thought experiment, there are problems with your esx host with ESX, vSphere, vCenter naming universe underscores?

    Just an info

All my guests have underscore in them. I had to replace all of them with a dashboard because ESX 4.1 will not accept underscore after upgrade to the console.

No, ESX (i) is a bare metal hypervisor. It cannot coexist with another operating system on the same hardware.

ESXi (or ESX) coexist with other OS? like GRUB can linux redhat bootloader?

Maybe it's possible. I guess this is something that must understand the bootloader.

Moreover, what is better, ESXi or ESX?

IMHO, that's the wrong question. In general, both have the same kernel, so they offer pretty much the same. But ESX (i) is not a console and the free version can also not be integrated in vCenter without having to purchase the appropriate license.

But on the subject of virtualization, performance and trust, they are the same.

  • Install ESX 4 with RDP

I try to install ESX 4 with HP Rapid Deployment Pack (RDP version 6). I am trying to add a silent installation of HP management tools.

I added a script which reads:

    1. HP management tools

    CD/Home

    tar - zxvf hpmgmt - 8.3.1 - vmware4x.tgz

    CD/hpmgmt/831

    chmod + x *.sh

    chmod + x *.rpm

    ./install831vibs.sh--silent--inputfile hpmgmt.conf

Anyone has any experience in customization of their installation for RDP? Talking with HP is almost useless since most of them, I found to be clueless about their own product.

    Thank you

I think you need to add the chmod 777 then can any account. The x

    just makes it executable AFAIK.

  • ESX server with 2 different storage array?

    Hello.

I currently have my ESX servers connected to storage DS4700 and most berries.  Each ESX is double path via a switch which, in turn, allows me to see my DS4700.  My question is, can I i the area my ESX Server so that it can "see" my DS8300 and I would be able to assign LUNS of my ESX servers with no problems?  Both can coexist?  I think I should use for my DS4700 host bus adapters and host bus adapters that are dedicated to my DS8300?  A UNIX point, these 2 storage arrays do not 'communicate' the same way (for example, SDD and RDAC).

    Thank you.

    Steph

SDD driver is for the multipath. VMware has its own multi-channel driver that is shipped with ESX server, you won't not any 3rd party multipathing software.

In any case to be abel to see camps Bay you have no need to activate the software multpathing. It is intended only to provide a redundant path to any logical unit number hosted by a single table through several MS SPs/Ports.

Area just for DS8300 ESX Server and a new analysis should see the new targets and when you present LUNS to your host definetion analyze again another you should see the DS8300 LUN.

    I hope this helps.

  • ESX - problems with snapshots

    Hello

Recently, we have som issues with our 4 ESX. We have solved the main question which is how to recover the esxconsole.vmdk. We used this KB: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1012874http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1012874 and http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1002511.

However we start the couldn t of virtual machines. I solved this problem by using the KB1002511 (sea above). Now it starts up fine however it starts like it where 13 December 2011, that was before I did the first snapshot.

    Please help me.

    Kind regards

It seems that you have lost the file descriptor for snapshots and attached the basic disk to the virtual machine, which caused the "loss" of the current data. Because you have turned on on the virtual machine with the base attached disk, there could be a corruption of data in the file system, even though I think it should be minor because of the size of the snapshot. I created a set of files based on the timestamp of the hard file that needs repair instant chain and run the virtual machine snapshot 4.

    Please follow these steps:

    1. power off the virtual machine (in fact, I hope that it is always off)
    2. remove the virtual machine from the inventory (right-click the virtual machine)
    3. Download the files from the .zip file attached to the file of the virtual machine on the data store
    4. Add the virtual machine to inventory (right-click the .vmx file)
    5. create a new snapshot!
    6. Turn on the virtual machine

  • Add esx cluster with different cpu

    Hi all

    I have a cluster with 5 esx 4.0 u1-208167, which installed on IBM x 3550 M2 ((2 x Intel® Xeon™ processeur E5520) .)

    I want to add a server to server cluster .the is IMB x 3550 m3 (2 x Intel® Xeon™ processor E5620 4 c)

do I have to make a chenges on Esx servers / vm / vcenter when I add the new esx for my datacerter and to the cluster so I can do Vmotion / storage migrate this server in the cluater (I have the appropriate license and plug)?

    Thanks for the help

is there another way to activate the CEV on my existing cluster and does not create a new?

You can try to create a new cluster and select CVS it and move all your hosts to this cluster

should I turn off my vm all?

You will need to put the hosts in maintenance mode. So what you can do is put the host 1 in maintenance mode, virtual machines will move to host 2. Now move the new active EVC cluster host 1 and continue to do this until all of your hosts are in the cluster. You can try vMotion your VM 2 host to host 1 which is now in the new cluster, but it all depends on what your processor will hide VCA is activated... And if you cannot vMotion, virtual machine in a VCA not to an active evc cluster cluster, then Yes, you will have to turn off and restart your virtual machines in the new cluster

I also have SRM ad site.do I need to activate the CEV on the cluster, I have here (a different Vcenter)

    No u don't.

  • Behavior of ESX/ESXi with standard or free license on HW with more than 6 core

I am wonderig what happens if I run an ESX license on processor with the core of more than 6.

For example after the Installation of ESX on an OCTO-Core processor HW, what happens after insert a license that is not advanced or Enterpise Plus key.

I run VM using only 6 of the 8 main? or the system prevents me to start a virtual machine due to the limitation of the basis of my license?

The limitation of the base would be the license include all of the physical cores. It is different from the standard or free license which gives you 4 SMP (max 4 vCPU simultaneously).

If you use advance or company, then the licence would be only to see max 6 cores processors and ignore the other 2 hearts. You can still use your virtual machine as usual. =)

  • ESX Server with a control VM, instead of the workstation

Considering change of ESX Server to increase the memory available to my VM that is connected to the internet.  But I've been advised what ESX a second pc needs to combat it.  So it's no good in replacement of the workstation or player.

Why can't a virtual machine with the guest only network use the computer controlling in ESX, playing the role of external control computer?

If it is declared with a raw disk, it can even have full access on the host drive. You can then install vmware workstation virtual machine to edit .vmx via the user interface files, generate new hard or copy - pasting entire VM.

And when you have need of more memory, you suspend this VM control and almost all memory is available for the computer connected to the internet virtual.

    Why not?

ESX is a pretty primitive operating system - it can even display a beautiful picture because it has only a text console.

Because it is so limited and restricted compared with other operating systems, it's so good to run virtual machines without GUI.

The disadvantage of this design is that you need a second machine to display a virtual computer desk

  • Are compatible with ESX VM with ESXi VM?

Hi all I'm new to these forums but I'm stuck on a problem.  I am currently booked in Novemeber do an official course of ESX4 VMWare with the hope of sitting my PCV shortly after.  I'll build an ESX laboratory on 2/3 servers so I can use things like VMotion with the trial version and put several virtual machines using Openfiler as a SAN.  As an ESX license will be too expensive for home use, I will eventally go back to the use of ESXi after my VCP.  Question is if I create virtual machines using ESX they will be compatible with ESXi.  If they are done I have to convert them to work or will they function normally.

    Thanks in advance

    Michael

Yes, they are compatible - essentially ESX and ESXi are the same just platform it was their management is slightly different - ESX has the Service Console and ESXi does not work - you will learn about it in your class

  • ESX - integration with Active Directory: Kerberos?

    Hi all

We set up the integration of ads for SSH on ESX 3.5 U3 accounts.

esxcfg-auth - enablead works very well:

    esxcfg-auth - enablead - addomain = our.domain.com - addc = our.domain.com

For some reason, there was already an additional line in the configuration script: esxcfg-auth - enablekrb5

    esxcfg-auth--enablekrb5--krb5realm=our.domain.com--krb5kdc=our.domain.com--krb5adminserver=our.domain.com

Things go awry as soon as the last command entered.

When you add a local account with this powershell command, we get this error:

    New-VMHostAccount: 12/05/2009-10:17:11 new-VMHostAccount 52976ebb - 2 d 24

-f493-9aa3-bca7894ef581 a general error has occurred: passwd: Authenticate

The local account is created, but the equivalent of Active Directory gets locked out, after several of these events:

    Failed prior authentication

    ID: DOMAIN\TEST-USER

    Service name: kadmin/changepw

    Pre-authentication type: 0x0

    Error code: 0 x 19

    Customer's address: 10.10.120.16

Now, I have two questions for you:

1 - does anyone how to solve the problem of blocking

2 East - -enablekrb5 necessary? What gives me extra in addition to enablead-

    Thanks for your help!

    Kind regards

    Harold

enablekrb5 is not necessary.  The enablead will set up your kerberos configuration to talk to ad.  the krb5 option is used when you use a KDC that does not have active directory.  In addition, when you create an account on the side ESX, it's pretty much an account without password.  At least no password in UNIX file perspective shadow.  Authentication works by checking the files local to the user name (since the announcement does not serve for the Pb of the user, only authentication), then check the password in the local files, which do not have a password, so failure, and continuing to the announcement through kerberos, for a successful verification.  If you try to create an account with a password on the ESX system, then this is the problem.  You don't need to put it, in fact, it must be without password, so without posting, the user can connect to the system via ssh not effectively or console.

  • Actually an ESX cluster with different times may have problems?

    Hello

Recently, I hired a company to install a cluster EXES 3.5.

After leaving, I discovered that the two machines, ESX1 and ESX2 have hours different (about 12 hours difference). The company said that it is impossible that the two machines have the same time, because I don't have a time server on the LAN.

I am facing many problems with the cluster.

Some of the machine should ocupy 100 GB and 200 GB are using (I have no pictures of this machines)

When my VM SAP jumps from ESX1 to ESX2 services down

The VCB does not detect the majority of virtual machines and I can't see them on BE 12

The problem of cluster could be related?

    Thanks in advance,

    Luis Estevens

You really do need get guests in sync. As has already been noted SAP (or any database system) will not be as if all of a sudden she is 12 hours in the future or the past.

If you do not have an internal time server (there are a couple of freeware NTP servers that run on Windows) you can use an external time source. I use pool.ntp.org (http://www.pool.ntp.org/en/use.html) it is a great service they have around l 'Robing' between the time sources. For this he both ESX hosts should be able to make outbound connections to port 123 (NTP) UDP.

  • ESX host with local storage recommended for the host partition table?

    Hi all

I know that the best practical partition table should look like this:

    Mount Point

    Partition

    Size

    Description

    / dev/sda (primary)

    / Boot

    ext3

    250 MB

Change of extra space for upgrades

    N/A

    SWAP

    1 600 MB

Change the maximum size of Exchange service console

    /

    ext3

    5120 MB

Change of extra space in the root

    / dev/sda (Extended)

    / var

    ext3

    4096 MB

Create partition to avoid an overflow of root with log files

    / tmp

    ext3

    1024 MB

Create partition to avoid an overflow of root with temporary files

    / opt

    ext3

    2048 MB

Create partition to avoid overfilling root with the log files of VMware HA

    / Home

    ext3

    1024 MB

Create partition to avoid an overflow of root with agent / user files

    vmkcore

    100 MB

    Pre-configured

However with a system with local storage would you set it up the same way, and whatever it is must be amended to change to get ESX to write log files to the different partitions?  I would like to configure it for future expansion for when the enterprise package is configured.

Yes, I would set up the same way with an ESX with local storage server and nothing needs to be changed for the vmekernel right at the partition/var - unless of course you want to write to a log server that you need to change a configuration file to point to the server logs.  If you talk to the ESX Enterprise license you willnot have to change partiition table-

Also on something else if you don't have a SAN/NAS storage you will also need to create a VMFS partition on the local data store to host your virtual machines
