ESX - problems with snapshots

Hello

Recently, we have som issues with our 4 ESX. We have solved the main question which is how to recover the esxconsole.vmdk. We used this KB: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1012874http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1012874 and http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1002511.

However we start the couldn t of virtual machines. I solved this problem by using the KB1002511 (sea above). Now it starts up fine however it starts like it where 13 December 2011, that was before I did the first snapshot.

In my datastore1 I have these files to my VM Wiki:

-rw - r - r - 1 root root 66221 Feb 25 02:36 vmware.log
-rw - 1 root root 67133440 14 December 00:54 Wiki-000001 - delta.vmdk

-rw - r - r - 1 root root 259 Feb 25 02:15 Wiki.vmxf

Is it possible to put my VM home was February 21? I ve tried using this KB http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1002310 but haven´t did it!

The virtual machine is a Wiki (MediaWiki), using Centos 5, 64-bit version.

Please help me.

Kind regards

Johnny

It seems that you have lost the file descriptor for snapshots and attached the basic disk to the virtual machine, which caused the "loss" of the current data. Because you have turned on on the virtual machine with the base attached disk, there could be a corruption of data in the file system, even though I think it should be minor because of the size of the snapshot. I created a set of files based on the timestamp of the hard file that needs repair instant chain and run the virtual machine snapshot 4.

Please follow these steps:

  1. power off the virtual machine (in fact, I hope that it is always off)
  2. remove the virtual machine from the inventory (right-click the virtual machine)
  3. Download the files from the .zip file attached to the file of the virtual machine on the data store
  4. Add the virtual machine to inventory (right-click the .vmx file)
  5. create a new snapshot!
  6. Turn on the virtual machine

  • problem with snapshots and provisioning

Hi, I'm having a few problems creating templates of virtual machines with snapshots. Virtual machines use a provisioning, but when I take a snapshot of the virtual disk is marked as thick (it seems to be a known bug http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1020137), although it actually uses a provisioning. So, when I clone the virtual machine and mark it as a model, this new model is configured as thickness of provisioning.

I was not able to force the new model to create as a provisioning via the Perl SDK.  Does anyone know how I could force the model to use provisioning?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

In general, in order to convert the discs thick thin discs using the CloneVM_Task API, you need to set the VirtualMachineCloneSpec.location.transform as VirtualMachineRelocateTransformation.sparse. To perform the reverse operation, i.e. to convert a disc thin thick disk, set the property transform as VirtualMachineRelocateTransformation.flat

I hope that this could be useful for you!

  • Problems with snapshots

    Hello

I have ESXi Server 3.5 with 4 virtual machines in it. I use the free script that is available in this forum, do a full backup to another location virtual computers, every day.

A few days ago, I found that the backups are not running, the script tells me that there is already a snapshot. I found that there are a few new files tem, with the last data recorded about them beeing and the real vm disk not beeing used for several days.

How can I validate the data to the virtual disk, so that I can run the backup again?

This is a full "ls - alh' on the folder of the virtual machine:

    Any advice?

I have already lost all the data on a virtual machine, because I've renamed a file and made the backup again... and it deleted the renamed file.

    Thanks for your help!

Yes, you can delete the snapshot with the virtual machine, but do not forget that the performance is not good.

If you can turn off the virtual machine, the time will be probably faster.

  • Problem with the cmdlet Remove-Snapshot

    Hello everyone,

I have a problem with the cmdlet Remove-Snapshot: it fails to remove the snapshot when I made a copy of file (Copy-Item) between calls to New-Snapshot and Remove-Snapshot if (and only if) I put - confirm option to $false. If - confirm is $true everything works, but it does not allow me to run the non-interactive script. The error that is returned is "vim.fault.InvalidVmConfig".

Anyone know if there is a problem on my side, on the side of ESX Server or a bug in the VI Toolkit? Any possible workaround?

I have attached the PowerShell script, I used to reproduce the error and the script log file that contains the error message.

    The versions I used are:

    VMware.Vim.dll (1.5.0.1299, "VI API 1.5.0 build.Net 142961")

    VMware ESX Server 3i, 3.5.0 110271

I'm not able to reproduce this on my environment but I am sure that the issue is not with the - confirm: $false parameter. After you copy the file there is a timeout that is set to 10 seconds. Can you increase it (even if I do not at all see a reason of this time-out) and see what happens?

  • Problem with deletion of snapshots

    Hello

I have a problem with deletion of snapshots for virtual machine running on ESXi 3.5. I had a problem with the lack of free space on the drive where VM is hosted. I managed to free up space and wanted to commit snapshots (delete) to free additional space. Unfortunately, at the time of the withdrawal of clichés that I ran out of space again on this store now I'm stuck with clichés present in the store but not visible in the Snapshot Manager.

Any suggestions on how I can get rid of these pictures now? All I can think is move VM converter of this virtual machine to a new one.

    Thanks, Marcin

The reason that you ran out of space is the way a "Delete All" is handled.

I guess in your case a 'Delete All' may temporarily need up to approximately 115 GB of additional disk space. Troubleshooting VM snapshot problems perfectly describes the process. Take a look at the animation in the "process behind 'Remove all' snapshots '.

So what you can do is:

-Free up enough space, create another cliché, and then do a "Delete All".

-Cold clone or V2V the VM in another data store

-Recreate the vmsd file based on the instantaneous channel from the header vmdk files and delete the snapshots one by one starting with the first (oldest) snapshot. If you want to try this make sure you fully understand other snapshots that it will end in the corruption of data!

Due to the size and the possible impacts on the storage I recommend doing this during peak hours and with the virtual machine shut down.

If you have a different available datastore (~ 300GB), I would recommend cloning. This does not affect the original files in case something goes wrong. If the clone works, you can safely remove the "old" VM and files and migrates the virtual computer is back to datastore original.

Regarding the browser data store.  Toggle the display of data warehouses in the vi client.  Or press ctrl-shift-d.  Here, right-click on your data store, and then select Browse datastore.  When that opens, add at the top of your taskbar, next to the folder icon, is a download icon, a disc with an arrow.  This will allow you to download files to your data store.  Navigate to a folder in your data store and download the ISO to.

It is a roundabout process, but will work if other methods fail.  With the ILO.  You can map your local cd through the ILO on a drive on the local ESX host.  This will make your local client drive, walk of the esx.  With one side mounted ESX host, in the settings of your virtual machine, you can edit the cd and this time, instead of customer, you can select the host device.

  • Actually an ESX cluster with different times may have problems?

    Hello

Recently, I hired a company to install a cluster EXES 3.5.

After leaving, I discovered that the two machines, ESX1 and ESX2 have hours different (about 12 hours difference). The company said that it is impossible that the two machines have the same time, because I don't have a time server on the LAN.

I am facing many problems with the cluster.

Some of the machine should ocupy 100 GB and 200 GB are using (I have no pictures of this machines)

When my VM SAP jumps from ESX1 to ESX2 services down

The VCB does not detect the majority of virtual machines and I can't see them on BE 12

The problem of cluster could be related?

    Thanks in advance,

    Luis Estevens

You really do need get guests in sync. As has already been noted SAP (or any database system) will not be as if all of a sudden she is 12 hours in the future or the past.

If you do not have an internal time server (there are a couple of freeware NTP servers that run on Windows) you can use an external time source. I use pool.ntp.org (http://www.pool.ntp.org/en/use.html) it is a great service they have around l 'Robing' between the time sources. For this he both ESX hosts should be able to make outbound connections to port 123 (NTP) UDP.

  • Migration of VMS with Snapshots

I'm at the stage of planning an ESX 3.5/VC 2.5 upgrade to vSphere.  This will be a 'rotating' upgrade, so many migrations VM will take place.  We are all local storage, so the migration will be in data warehouses.

Unfortunately my shop uses snapshots very strongly.  I am aware of the problems created when popular VM migration with snapshots in data warehouses.  My question is, using VMware Converter makes this possible?  If I can avoid having to delete all snapshots, it would be a huge bonus.  I can't seem to find a definitive answer on whether or not, the converter can handle this.

    Thank you.

    Hi chester78,

You are right, you cannot migrate a virtual machine without deleting the existing snapshots.

The alternative you are thinking to use vCenter Converter to migrate virtual machines, it is a good choice to avoid deleting snapshots and all the time this action takes.  VCenter Converter will migrate virtual machines in the current state.

In the shots, I recommend you read this VMware KB on best practices for snapshots of virtual machines:

    Hello-

We have completed the extremely useful VMWare Healthcheck script posted here http://communities.VMware.com/docs/doc-7430 .  A problem puzzling that we had is that

  • Problem with the module "Automation" in WindowsAzure

Top: Problems with the module used "Automation" service "WindowsAzure.

    Hello!

I really need your help to decide my problem of "Azure Automation". My boss has set a task for the 'Automation' module allows you to make a backup of Virtual Machines.

To understand my problem, I do the next:

    1. describe the situation of all;

    2. describe the problems that appear in this situation;

    3. my conclusions.

In addition, I am attaching the necessary information: my PS-scripts (from Windows and the automation of azure), log (with my notes) and screenshots (images with my notes) see file .rar Add_info (annex).

    1 description any situation

For our development projects, we have several Virtual Machines on service cloud "WindowsAzure. We need to make backups of discs with Virtual Machines each week. Earlier, for this task, I used Windows PowerShell on my computer and my PS-script (see Ann 0 - VM (backup) of the WPS_snapshot). I created a new storage 'backupstor' and containing 'snaps-drive '. When I run PS-script with my computer, I have backup of disks virtual Machin in the container "snaps-disk", without problem.

Now I have a new task "automatically make the process of creating backup of Virtual Machines (VM snapshots). I tried to use automation module (overview). Can I change my PS script for the 'Automation' module and create folders (see Ann 1 - records (make backups of virtual machines) _Azure_Automation).

I need to make a backup of Virtual Machine 'bosard' in the cloud 'cloudnet. "Bosard" on the disc size ~ approximately 90 000 000 000 bytes (total size of the default drive size 127 GB/136 367 309 312 bytes)

    2. description of the problems that appear in this situation

    My steps:

    1. I start files to make a backup of Virtual Machine disk (see annex 1 - files (make backups of virtual machines) _Azure_Automation))

    2. it starts successfully and generate the name of backup 1 (blob) - snapshot-bosard - osdisk_07.10.2014_07h00m39s.vhd (see image 1 - start copy backup 1 and annex 2 - log file copy process)

    3. the process of backup copy 1 (blob) will...

    Problem 1:

    4. the process of backup copy 1 (see Appendix 2 - process log file copy) automatically stops and complete to copy the part 1/3 bytes copied 28311552000only. Important: The size of my virtual machine disk ~ on 90 000 000 000 bytes.  (Maximum possible) of total capacity of the disk where the Virtual Machine is used - 136 367 309 312 (127 GB). (See picture 2 - stop backup copy 1)

    5. I have Virtual size 1 backup - 28311552000bytes, when the size of my VM - 90 000 000 000 / 136 367 309 312 bytes.

    Problem 2:

    6. after the termination of the process automatically makes copy backup 1, records (see annex 1 - files (make backups of virtual machines) _Azure_Automation) automatically start (see picture 2 - stop backup copy 1) and folders automatically create new snapshot Backup 2 - name - bosard - osdisk_07.10.2014_07h31m33s.vhd (see annex 2 - process log file copy, image 3 - stop the copy backup 1 & Begin copy backup 2 and 5 - backupStore_Azure (process)of image)

    7. I pressed "stop" and stopped the process of copy and folders (picture 4 - I stopped the process of creating backup 2 & records). And how result I had size Backup 1 and 2 = 0 bytes (see image 6 - backupStore_Azure (I order records))

    Note:

1 problem 1: the process of backup of virtual machine does not complete and stops automatically.

2 problem 2: the process of creating new second backup starts automatically. And as a result, we do not have the backup of virtual machine, when I use the 'Automation '.

    3. my conclusions

    I think that:

    1. my PS script for Automation (files) is not correctly. Then I need your help, how to fix this.

2 may be the module "Automation" is not working correctly. And the module 'Automation' needs repairs and settings.

In addition, I am attaching the necessary information (see the Add_info (annex) .rar file):

    Ann WPS_snapshot 0 - VM (backup)

Ann 1 - records (make backups of virtual machines) _Azure_Automation

Ann 2 - log file copy process

image 1 - start the copy backup 1

    image 2 - stop copy backup 1

    image 3 - stop copy backup 1 & Begin copy backup 2

    4. I stopped the image create backup processes 2 & records

    image 5 - backupStore_Azure (process)

    image 6 - backupStore_Azure (I order records)

    Thank you

    Kind regards
