Naming of the ESX hosts with the underscore. Best practices?

I was curious as to what that the general eager to name the ESX hosts with underscores "_". I found an old post in 2006 related to it:

http://communities.vmware.com/thread/64885

In the thread, it is usually frowend against because she not compling with DNS internet naming standards. The underscore character is not recognized by the Web servers.

He has been wondering if there would be no advantage to include similar underscore characters with no routable ip subnets, 192.168.x, 10, etc...

If you have designed it correctly you already have your hosts on a subnet that is not routable, so you would get no real benefit.

Beyond this thought experiment, there are problems with your esx host with ESX, vSphere, vCenter naming universe underscores?

Just an info

All my guests have underscore in them. I had to replace all of them with a dashboard because ESX 4.1 will not accept underscore after upgrade to the console.

  • Hosts with active Hyperthreading - best performance of the virtual machine?

After having been involved in a recent thread on Hyperthreading activation on your hosts: -.

    http://communities.VMware.com/message/1567821

In this thread Jason comments that when the HT is enabled he saw much better performance of virtual machines on this host, we have, I think I've also seen elsewhere.  We saw a clear improvement of the performance of our Oracle server when its on a host that has enabled HT, so much so that we have now disabled for this virtual machine DRS, so that it doesn't move off them.

If anyone has any other given that a marked improvement?

The specification of hosts within our farm are essentially the same, and new hosts with HT could actually could be called lower spec than our other guests so its interesting, it makes such a difference.

In any case, interesting to see what other people have found.

Yes, class processors Nehalem hyperthreading performance of vSphere one little, doubling the number of execution threads will make Scheduler ESX easiers so many jobs. I have a little stand alone ESX hosts with a single Quad Core Nehalem processor for applications Oracle and performance is very good.

  • ESX host with local storage recommended for the host partition table?

    Hi all

I know that the best practical partition table should look like this:

    Mount Point

    Partition

    Size

    Description

    / dev/sda (primary)

    / Boot

    ext3

    250 MB

Change of extra space for upgrades

    N/A

    SWAP

    1 600 MB

Change the maximum size of Exchange service console

    /

    ext3

    5120 MB

Change of extra space in the root

    / dev/sda (Extended)

    / var

    ext3

    4096 MB

Create partition to avoid an overflow of root with log files

    / tmp

    ext3

    1024 MB

Create partition to avoid an overflow of root with temporary files

    / opt

    ext3

    2048 MB

Create partition to avoid overfilling root with the log files of VMware HA

    / Home

    ext3

    1024 MB

Create partition to avoid an overflow of root with agent / user files

    vmkcore

    100 MB

    Pre-configured

However with a system with local storage would you set it up the same way, and whatever it is must be amended to change to get ESX to write log files to the different partitions?  I would like to configure it for future expansion for when the enterprise package is configured.

Yes, I would set up the same way with an ESX with local storage server and nothing needs to be changed for the vmekernel right at the partition/var - unless of course you want to write to a log server that you need to change a configuration file to point to the server logs.  If you talk to the ESX Enterprise license you willnot have to change partiition table-

Also on something else if you don't have a SAN/NAS storage you will also need to create a VMFS partition on the local data store to host your virtual machines

  • change the vswitch, best practical question

    Hello

Here is the scenario, I invited XP and I want to spend the vswitch he connected too.

Is it safe to simply change the properties of comments in the vshpere client, set up the different vswitch, select ok. (without closing comments)

Here is what happened last week and I would like to get feedback to see if I did something outside best practices.

I have a xp machine who's job it is to move files within our company.  In house app, had problems with the performance, of course the bandwidth network has been a problem but also a sustained the 100% CPU usage whenever the application in the House is running. I made a few changes, first I changed the network card to a vswitch with no other guests connected, than giving a non-shared on the network connection to this comments

I stopped our applications in the House that copies the edited files the client settings, change to the another vswitch, selecting ok...  Everything seemed fine, restarted apps and found no problem.

The next day, I increased the RAM on the host of Meg 512 to 1024 Meg as the available physical ram was weak, and I suspected disk cache.  Stop the guest computer, editing the memory and it has increased from 1024 to vsphere...  Restarted and is the reason for my questions, which connects to run the application has been corrupted and would not load the profile.

I should add that the application users often use the method "end task" through windows to complete the process as soon as they are sometimes does not.  Not something I tend to do what I think may be a cause of file corruption.

My boss suggested that he believes that my approach is the cause of profile corruption, citing specifically the way in which I changed the vswitch that the guest has been connected.  My understanding at this point is that my approach was equivalent to not patch a machine and plug in another switch, and I don't see how, which could cause a windows become corrupt profile.

Ideas of the community?  Expect honesty burtal if my method is in error.

Change the who vswitch a virtual computer to connect during operation is perfectly accetable as only the switch that you move to can access the subnet of the virtual computer is configured for - it's like unplugging a [machine to go to an actual physical switch and plug it into a new physical switch -

  • Size of the file - best practices

I am putting together my first iPad app DPS and looking for a few tips to keep the manageable file size.

I did a quick project about 6 pages and it came as a huge 28 MB. My document end will be about 100 pages (x 2 for directions)

I really did nothing to try to reduce the size of the files in the project, I used PSD images with layers and not a not resize to 1024 x 768. Same thing with any jpg I used. I should do? Also, I did not bother to check if the image was CMYK or RGB. Basicially, I was working on the assumption that the images would be optimized in the process.

I created the files using JPG because I wanted to use the content viewer Desktop and I get PDF's will help with the size of the file. But that will make a big difference?

Is the largest part of this DPS overload just 28Mo or will it increase proportionally I've added pages?

You are looking for just best practices.

    Thank you

    Brian

    A few tips:

    (1) we will be re-sample images to the right size, so don't worry if your sourc eimages are bigger they must do.

    2) publish as PDF. This will make a big difference if you have a lot of text content.

    (3) not to publish two orientations. While we do support the feature, this means you have to do twice the work of layout and the size of the file is quite a bit larger. Choose an orientation that works best for your content, and stick with that. The vast majority of our publishers only portrait or landscape, not both.

  • Work with several sequences-best practices

    Hello.

I ve just started using Adobe Premiere CS6. My goal is to create a long movie, which is based on 30 hours of footage in raw gopro recorded on a recent trip of 2 hours.

Now my question is, what is the best practice for working with many sequences/clips?

You have a single file of heavy project, with all the clips?

Or make you small chapters that contains number of sequences x/x minutes long and ultimately combine all these?

Or how would you do it the best way, so its easier to work with?

Thanks a lot for your help.

    Kind regards

    Lars

I make a primary sequence in your project and then modify the individual scenes in the form of separate sequences, and then nest them in the primary sequence.

That way, you would have a single file of project heavy with all the media files (raw video, music, etc.).

I find it easier to work with. With the help of several project files would get too complex and fragmented throughout the of your computer.

I work with a lot of video GoPro, so I wonder what your Setup looks like. What device you have, and how your computer/Premiere Pro is configured?

  • ESX 3.5 and SQL best practices

I searched for info on best practices when deploying SQL on the virtual computer. We already have a couple of lightweight SQL production servers running 2008 x 64 and SQL 2005. We are looking for migrating databases existing physical servers to a 2008 newly deployed x 64 SQL VM, I was able to find documents of Vmware and turned to the forum and information. This are not the giant databases - of things such as BES, EPolicy and other mundane but necessary databases. Even more to divide readers to separate newspapers, the sys and databases? Any advice would be appreciated.

  • How to add in DVS ESX hosts with vsphere SDK for perl?

    Hello

I am a newbie to vsphere SDK for perl. Just started using it for automation of one month back. , I was looking for options to automate the addition of ESXi servers and their physical cards in the distributed virtual switch. I got some details on how to add using powerCLI. However, my requirements are in the use of vsphere SDK for perl. Any help would be appreciated.

Have we not like subroutines or plug editable in vsphere SDK for perl inorder to add host ESX in DVS. ?
    Thank you and best regards,
    Lebou

You can certainly do it in Perl.  I don't have a working example, but perhaps that William will be when he catches this thread

If I have time tomorrow, I'll try to put something together to help you get started, but you can also simply map the logic of LucD script.

Basically Get - view is equivalent to Vim: get_view() and New-Object calls should be mapped to the type of object in Perl, for example, instead of VMware.Vim.DVSConfigSpec New-Object, we $spec = DVSConfigSpec-> (again).

  • Location of the DB - best practices repository

    Hello

We have two main Oracle DB, Production and Test servers.  The Production Server using dataguard and there is of course a server standby db.

I'm getting up 12 c Cloud control EM and running on a new server. Is it better to install the DB repository on the SAME (local) server, or on our Production DB server?  Regardless of the place where, I'll raise dataguard to replicate the repository to a standby DB.

I would like to have all the answers.  I looked through a few white papers, but can't seem to find the answer to this.

    Thank you

I suggest to install on the same server, as long as you have a good amount of space on the server.

    Sincere greetings,

  • Cisco unity conn cluster integration with cucm cluster best practices

    Hi all

I'm trying to integrate a cucm with a cluster of cuc 9.1 9.1 cluster. Some confusing points that I hope can be clarified.

    for cucm

    1. I created a voicemail with 48 ports server that will satisfy both servers of cuc

    for cuc

I created a phone with two groups of ports system.

two point of Group on the same server port voicemail prefix but different servers cuc. each pg also has a different sequence of the tftp servers.

the problem with this design is that voice on the cucm ports not recorded with the port group that is configured to point to the cucsub. port groups cucpub point fits very well.

Is how to configure the integration of a cluster of cuc. I saw the guides but it is more oriented towards stand-alone configurations.

    Help please!

The SRND for CXN stipulates that all calls should be directed to the Subscriber with the Publisher handling overflow beyond the capabilities of the Subscriber and/or failover when the Subscriber is offline. They should not be balanced alternating.

You can create two servers of voicemail with the wizard and give them separate device classes if you need to register for the various nodes of CCM.

PS - You can also avoid this mess of all of the port on CUCM by integrating on SIP instead of SCCPS. In this case, you still have the CXN ports but they are only logical entities; CUCM has just a SIP trunk to each node. There is a separate for this integration guide.

Please remember useful frequency responses and identify useful or correct answers.

  • vCenter Server with vSphere Essentials best practices for small business

I hesitated to post this thread for fear of redundancy, but I wasn't able to find an answer in previous discussions.

I read the installation documentation for vSphere Essentials vCenter Server installation.

Is it a good idea to install vCenter on my ESXi host as a virtual machine?  I don't understand how the server can be installed as a virtual machine if she must always be on.  What happens when I do the updates of the hypervisor, ESXi (4.0 to 4.1)?  This would not cause the vCenter Server to disconnect?

Because I have Essentials, I don't have a HA and cannot migrate the server vCenter Server to another host as shown in the installation documentation.

    Thank you

It should not be a problem - if you manually perform the update using either the esxupdate or vcenter command vihostupdate does not at all in the game - if you use VUM he actually intitiates the vihostupdate order - when restarting the host to be reconnecting to vcenter once it is running.

Yep, take a look at FindByDatastorePath which allows you to search by path of the data store and returns a VM MOR

  • 6 zoning LUNs esx host

    Hello

    We have 6 esx host with 2 switches and 300 fc HBA each.2 Brocade on hus 110 with raid 5 7 + 1. !

the scenario, I don't need a store of data for virtual machines or maybe another 2.

in the storage Bay, I would add the LUNS in a port and then i will be the area each esx with this port, combining the fc switches 2?

or should I make another raid group or LUN to the other port of storage?

    y at - it a pattern?

You will need to create 4 areas by host, two on each FC switch, so a total of 24 areas for your 6 hosts with storage.

Edit: has a quick and dirty "drawing." Take a look at the attached jpg. When you start storage, there are 4 possible ways to reach each server, which are your necessary areas.
