ESX 4.1 to 4.0 Cluster

Hello

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post...

Current configuration:

  • Single from VCenter Server 4.0 (496403)
  • 3 ESX host 4.0 (504850)
  • Single cluster with DRS and HA
  • VMotion

4.0 existing hosts 1 is to be upgraded to version 4.1 update 03 (800380) (Format and re - install)

It will also be in the same cluster etc...

Starting the morning - please let me know if it will work and if I you have problems with vmotion etc...

Sam

Sorry about that but yes vcenter - I may be wrong, but I think that there was no change of license between 4.0 and 4.1 - I would like to confirm with vmware.

  • VMotion with ESX and ESXi in the same cluster.

My client wants to spend his whole army ESX 4.0 to ESXi 4.1 host. I know that it requires a clean install of the host. But vMotion always works in a cluster with a mix of the host ESX 4.0 and ESXi 4.1?

You will be fine to have a mixed group of ESX and ESXi hosts.

  • How to migrate VRM to another ESX/cluster server

We have our VRM and VR servers running with vReplication in an ESX cluster.  The network manager has decided to split the ESX server and create a new cluster for our servers, leaving the old cluster and ESX server environment from the view.  I was able to migrate the VR server without any problem, but receive a warning when you try to move the VRM.  How is it best to do it without having to stop the replication and recreate all (that has been no joy for us)?

    Hello

Safely, you can migrate the VRM machine or use vMotion.
Make sure you remove the VRM from the inventory of VC machine, as in this case, the configuration of the OVF environment will be lost.

  • Minimum number of VMware ESX for a HA cluster

Can someone please detail the minimum number of hosts vsphere required for a HA cluster?

I'm planning an implementation of the VMware farm including a number of ESX hosts that will be split into two groups. The first group will include vsphere servers that are hosting virtual machines NOT required for DR via SRM. The second group will be VMware ESX and VMs protected by SRM.

With respect to the SRM cluster, the number of virtual machines is minimal (5-6 virtual machines) and can run on a host unique vsphere. The thin HA I will include 2 vpshere hosts in this cluster. My question is therefore if 2 VMware ESX is OK for a HA cluster because I'm not sure what should be the minimum number?

    Any guidance is appreciated.

    Thank you

  • May 4 ESX and ESXi 4.1 exist in the same Cluster?

    Hello all-

    Installation program:

    vSphere 4.0 Infrastructure

    • CLUSTER1 = 2 ESX 4.0 hosts (Enterprise license) (HA/DRS)

    • Networking is standard vSwitches

    • Storage is Compellent SAN Fiber Channel

    • About 20 mV

    • 2 = 2 ESX 4.0 hosts (EnterprisePlus licenses) cluster (HA/DRS)

    • Networking is Cisco Nexus 1000v Distributed Virtual Switch

    • Storage is Compellent SAN Fiber Channel

    • About 15 virtual machines

    The question is this:

How can I upgrade correctly these four hosts 4 ESX to ESXi 4.1 with very little or no interruption of service?   Yet once ESX 4 & gt; ESXi 4.1

    Notes:

    • Assume that I already have vCenter Server 4.1 installed on Windows Server 2008 R2 with a compatible SQL database.

More information?  I can provide.  Can I just disable HA/DRS, upgrade to a host at a time and then add it to the respective cluster and configure?  What difficulties will be the Nexus switch vDS cause?

Yes, the exception would you use FT - http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1013637.

  • Cannot add vSphere ESX server in Cluster 4

    Good evening everyone

I just finished installing 2 vSphere 4 Essential Edition more servers. Has finished installing vCenter and configured in the data center, I plugged the server vCenter ESX host and create a new cluster with HA features.

When I drag one of the two ESX servers in the cluster, the progress bar stops at 84% and then I got the following error:

    Name_esx.domain HA configuration

Can not complete the configuration of the Agent on the host. See the details of the task for more information. Another HA configuration error.

Assuming that I have a problem with the license I have everything configured in evaluation mode, but nothing.

I don't understand where it may be the problem.

    Thanks in advance

try to restart the management agents and try again.  In addition, if you have no virtual machine running on the host computer, add it to the cluster maintenance mode, then press exit maintenance mode once the host is in the cluster.

    > service vmware-vpxa restart

... also, what happens if you try "reconfigure for ha?

  • Add new ESX Server Cluster

Just a quick question, I installed ESX 3.5 on a new server X 4200 and you want to add the new node to the cluster in our production environment.

Is it just a case of click with the right button on the cluster Server VIrtual Center and selecting "add host" and then passing by the guests of the wizard? I've never done this before, but it seems that it is very simple.

Am I missing something and I need to know?

    Thank you

If you have your new esx Server in the inventory just drag and drop it to your cluster. If you do not add the esx server to your inventory list you can right click on the cluster and just add the esx server there.

If you want to set this for VCA ESX Server you must disable all the virtual machine on the ESX Server. otherwise, you can add the ESX with virtual machines for your cluster.

    Thank you

  • Along 4.0 Vsphere esx 3.5 in a cluster

Is it possible to run a 4.0 vsphere host along side a host esx 3.5 in the same cluster, I like to test before fully committing to vsphere 4.0

    Thank you

    William Webb

Yes, and you can also do VMotion between ESX 4 and 3.

But, as written above, you must VC4.

  • Wide DPM except 1 cluster server?

    Hello

I currently have a cluster with 7 5.1 in ESXi servers.

I want to put the DPM on the whole cluster with the exception of 1 server. The script below does for the entire cluster, but I can't work out what to write change options management host power on one of the servers to people with reduced mobility. Any thoughts please? I think that it is in the ClusterConfigInfoEx / ClusterDpmHostConfigInfo articles, but every time I have to try is not working.

    Add-PSSnapin VMware.VimAutomation.Core

SE connect-VIServer-Server XYZ - user XXX - XXX password

    $cluster = get-Cluster "DQT" | Get-View

    $spec = new-Object VMware.Vim.ClusterConfigSpecEx

    $spec.dpmConfig = new-Object VMware.Vim.ClusterDpmConfigInfo

    $spec.dpmConfig.defaultDpmBehavior = 'automated '.

    $spec.dpmConfig.enabled = $true

    $spec.dpmConfig.hostPowerActionRate = 1

    $taskMoRef = $cluster. ReconfigureComputeResource_Task ($spec, $true)

    Remove-PSSnapin VMware.VimAutomation.Core

The error came as a result of the supposed script already had that esxi excluded from the DPM, where the option 'change '.

I've included a test to check if the ESXi entry is already present in excluded hosts.

And the new version also supports several exclusions.

  • Upgrading ESX 3.5.0 build 110268 ESXi 5.1 or newer

I need to upgrade our current VMware ESX 3.5 cluster for the ESXi 5.1. To summarize the migration, we will use all of the new materials for vsphere 5.1 5.1 ESXi and new iSCSI SAN.

Existing/current cluster environment (about 44 vms) is as follows:-vcenter (version 2.5) (1) and (3) dell servers to ESX 3.5 for a total of 4 servers, storage Fibre Channel EMC CX 300.  We went ahead and bought 4 new Dell servers and storage iSCSI, SAN Compellent Dell to replace the current environment.  The only difference is that the NEW strorage for cluster 5.1 will not fibre channel, but will rather iSCSI.

I read a few post regarding similar improvements which I have summarized, but I'm a little unsure of how to proceed in particular relative to the storage side, (cluster running FC and iSCSI for new cluster).

    1. install Vcenter 5 on of the new material/vcenter Server

    (A) disconnect all ESX 3.5 knots of vcenter 2.5 and plug the new Vsphere 5 and set up the cluster

    (B) connect all new ESXi 5.1 nodes to the new vsphere 5 for the new Vsphere 5 cluster will contain all of the new and the old 3.5/ESXi 5.1 ESX servers

-This is where I am confused.  My plan is to have the new cluster 5.1 vsphere manage guests to vmotion ESX 3.5 and ESXi 5.1, the old 3.5 ESX virtual machine in the new 5.1 ESXi.  Can I add new nodes 5.1 ESXi or ESX 3.5 to the new cluster 5.1 first, or that matter which node I add first?  Also, the new 5.1 ESXi hosts should have access to FC storage that the old ESX 3.5 has access to?  In other words, the new and old ESX/ESXi hosts would need to have visibility to the FC SAN for vmotion, right?  I do not know if I can add the ESX 3.5 and ESXi 5.1 to the new cluster if not all guests have access to the old CF storage?

    2. through ESXi 5 knots ESX 3.5 virtual machines using vmotion

    3. plan downtime for virtual machines and upgrade virtual hardware (use of snapshot before you upgrade upgrade goes bad snack)

4 use storage vmotion to move vm data warehouses to the new iSCSI SAN

Introduce the new iSCSI LUNS to the new cluster and make a storage vmotion to move storage vm of FC SAN to the iSCSI SAN.

Thank you in advance, all the tips

  • vMotion esx to ESXi 5.1 4.0

    Hi guys

I have a client with a quite old deployment... vCenter 4.0 and ESX 4.0.

    We are going to 5.1.

I will install a 5.1 vCenter in new server which will have ESXi 5.1

so I'll add this 5.1 ESXi and ESX 4.0 to a new cluster 3 servers so I'll update one by one all the servers

so my question is can I vMotion machines virtual ESX 4.0 to 5.1 ESXi? problem with vmware tools or virtual hardware?

    Thank you very much

Yes, you will be able to vmotion between ESXi hosts without problem - you can confirm support here http://partnerweb.vmware.com/comp_guide2/sim/interop_matrix.php?

  • Migrating from 5.0.0 free ESXi / ESX 4.1.0 a local database to bought ESXi 4.1.0 with SAN

We currently have four host servers.  Two host servers are the free version of VMware ESXi 5.0.0 and ESX 4.1.0.  I have two hosts in a cluster, obviously with the version under license and running VMWare VCenter ESXi 4.1.0 running.

All of these guests have all (vmdk files etc.) data stored locally on the host servers.  I'll be migrating to a new SAN and buy under license of VMware.

I need to move the virtual hosts free version VMware servers (5.0.0 ESXi / ESX 4.1.0) to the cluster host ESXi 4.1.0 under license.  I can export the folder containing all the files and import it on the cluster license.  Once records are there, how can I activate the servers of records and pull up?

I have to get off these hosts old existing virtual servers on the new servers which we you place your order.

In this case I the new environment configuration and then for example use VMware Converter to migrate (V2V, with the virtual machine is turned off) the virtual machine of the former hosts in the vCenter Server environment allowing you to select the target storage.

  • Can't see LUN after patch host ESX 3.5

    Hello

I have 2 2 ESX 3.5 host cluster and 2 data stores of each: an equalogic and a single CX300 SAN DELL (the two clusters are equal)

last week I have ESX 3.5 patch a first cluster on the two hosts with no problems (I've updated with all the patches available on the vmware website, from 2009 to 2011)

I just patched the first host on the second group, then after aplly the patches, I don't see LUNS on the DELL CX300 data store, Lun Equalogic are ok. The second host who is unblemished still see the two data warehouses, Equalogic, and Dell.

I tried to reboot the host and rescan vmhba3 (CX300) but it says 0 targets and no LUN (either a total disk space of 1 to 4)

No idea how to solve this problem?

Depending on the behavior you described, seems associated patch. You do not yet see LUNS on adapters for storage, which can mean that you have a matter of presentation. You can verify that the LUNS are presented to that ESX Server on the side of storage?

  • VSphere VirtualCenter cluster remove

I would like to move ESX one VirtualCenter to the other clusters. I was vmtioning by a vm from one ESX Server to another in the cluster. I then put the host in maintenance mode and move the host cluster and then vmotion VM on it and then remove from VC. Can I have simply right-click on a cluster and choose 'Remove' - it seems that the cluster is removed and deleted the host within the cluster. I will then add these welcomes the new Victoria Cross. with all of the virtual machine.   Is that how that would work? or am I missing something?

not if you disconnect first the host. If the host is in a disconnected state, you don't need to put in maintenance mode.  You cannot delete a host if it is in a connected state.

  • Best practices for a domain controller in a DRS cluster

    Hi all

We have our virtualized 2 domain controllers.  We're in a DRS cluster, the other is on a 3rd stand alone ESX host.

On the cluster, which is the best way to ensure that the domain controller starts first?  We lost our AC for awhile last night (again), and when turned on the cluster hosts, apparently the domain controller did not come entirely everything first, leading to a lot of problems with the other virtual machines.

On the host of the 3rd, the second domain controller is configured to start first, with all the other virtual machines on a delay of 45 seconds.

If you use HA, you can set the priority of restarting to 'high '. To find it by changing the settings of your cluster and "the VM options.
