From 3 host ESX to ESXi

I have 3 ESX hosts and vcenter 1 host (running in a VM).  My plan for the upgrade to ESXi is to:

1. the active 4 vm Vmotion and vcenter for an ESX host.

2. install ESXi host with no VM

3. Add the new vCenter Cluster ESXi host (so now the cluster would be 2 ESX and ESXi 1)

4 repeat the steps above until all of the hosts are the ESXi

The guys you see no problem with that?

Can I mix and match ESX and ESXi in the same cluster?

Can I vMotion between ESX and ESXi?

Thank you guys!

You can do a VMotion between ESX and ESXi (and vice versa) as long as all of the hosts are all the amendments or Intels processors only. In addition, each host must be able to have access to the shared too much storage.

Finally if you cpu are too much difference, you need to enable Enhanced vMotion. http://KB.VMware.com/kb/1003212

  • The IP of the host ESX and ESXi console information

    Hi guys,.

I have a little problem here, we have a script that collects the host Console IP, host name, field info... etc.

My problem is with the period of INVESTIGATION, because we have a mixed environment of esx3.5, esx4.0, esx4.1 and ESXi4 get the IP of the Console is a bit of a problem.

    If I use the

    $NicInfo = get-VMHostNetwork - VMHost $esxhost. Name
    $newesxhost. VmHostName = $NicInfo.HostName
    $newesxhost. Domain = $NicInfo.DomainName
    {foreach ($cs in $NicInfo.ConsoleNic)}
    $newesxhost. IPAddress = [string] $cs. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
    }

I covers the ESX Console hosts IP info, but all the info of ESXi IP gets missed.

    If I add to the:

    $NicInfo = get-VMHostNetwork - VMHost $esxhost. Name
    $newesxhost. VmHostName = $NicInfo.HostName
    $newesxhost. Domain = $NicInfo.DomainName
    foreach ($cs in $NicInfo. ) VirtualNic | where {$_.name - eq "vmk0"}){}
    $newesxhost. IPAddress = [string] $cs. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
    }

I get the ESXi IP Management IP network, but the ESX hosts to report the vmk0 which is the IP address of vmotion.

So if anyone can help I'd be very happy.

  • Move from 4.0 ESX to ESXi 4.1 possible?

    Hello

I'm shure, that this question was asked several times already, but I was looking for a long time now and I have nowhere found an answer. The question is simple:

Is it possible to update via update 4.0 ESX to ESXi 4.1 Manager?

I discovered, that (of course) an upgrade is possible from ESX 4.0 to ESX 4.1, but can I upgrade to Version '' i ''? As we know, ESX will soon stop developing the classic version... This is why I'm starting to think of migration...

    Best regards and thank you

    Roland

I discovered, that (of course) an upgrade is possible from ESX 4.0 to ESX 4.1, but can I upgrade to Version 'i '.

You cannot change the type without a reinstall

As we know, ESX will soon stop developing the classic version... This is why I'm starting to think of migration...

It's almost a certainty, he's not going to happen tomorrow, and when that happens they will always support the ESX version.

Whenever I try to connect to a host, I get the same error.  First of all, I get:

After clicking on OK, I get this error:

Am I right that you cannot run a simple update to ESX to ESXi?  Talking about versions 4.0 ESX to ESXi 4.1 here.  I can do a new installation easily enough, but I'd rather not.

Also, just as a question, is there a way to check if a host ESX or ESXi vCenter?  It seems like it should be obvious, but I can't find it there.

    Thank you.

    Hello.

Correct, there is no simple update to change versions.

If you select the host in vCenter, examine the area above the tabs to display the version information.

  • problem, try to run the vyatta router 4 or 5 on esx and esxi

    Hi all

I have beed vyatta 4 virtual machines running for awhile now that routers. the problem I have is when there is a large amount of data passing through the router (for example copy an iso image of 500 MB) the host esx or esxi max cpu out. the cpu in time prompt little remains. I guess it's something to do with the pcnet32 NIC driver.

Vyatta 5 now open-vm-tools built in. the tools all the loading ok however I can't work on how I have to do to get the vmxnet driver works in the virtual machine - he says too that it's a pcnet32. can I manually set in the .vmx config file or somewhere?

    pointers would be great!

    Thank you.

I vaguely remember some cases on VMs Windows where the VM adapter had to be changed to resolve a performance problem, I do not remember a problem with the central unit. The release of Vyatta 5 is kind of cool that so maybe this will get bugfixed on the road.

    (1) check if your hardware supported vSphere 4.1

    (2) suggest upgrade to ESXi instead of ESX

    (3) make sure that you update your vCenter server first and vCetner 4.1 will run only x 64-bit Windows systems

    (4) for the stand-alone version you have separated RAID for ESX and store data if so you can just format the drive on which ESX is installed

    (5) for the site with SAN storage disconnect from host to storage and re - join

Make sure that the upgrade guide is reviewed

  • ESX to ESXi using host profiles

I was wondering if anyone has tried to use the host profiles to facilitate the migration?

That is to say take a profile of a host ESX and then install ESXi and then apply the profile of the host that you just do to this host?

    I think it should work.

    Stephen

Note also that Host profile does not apply tweaks, like frames.

And that vSphere 5 you can upgrade an ESX 4.x (but it have a previous update to 3.x) to ESXi 5 with most of its parameters

  • Is it possible to use GPFS or another build is a SAN storage shared for multiple ESX and ESXi hosts?

We have a license GPFS and SAN storage. I am trying to create a storage shared for multiple ESX and ESXi hosts share existing virtual machines. We tried once NFS, it of a little slow and consume too much bandwidth LAN.

Anyone can help answer? Thank you very much in advance!

It depends on your storage space.

You must connect all hosts to the same San, then follow the configuration guide of ESXi and specific documentation for your storage space (for sharing LUNS on multiple hosts).

  • From ESX to ESXi

    Hello

We use an IBM Bladecenter for VMWare. Virtual Machines are on a Fibre Channel-connected SAN.

Unfortunately a while a go, I mixed the Installation. Now I have ESX and ESXi installed. The two Version 4.0.0 (261974) I don't want to go back to new ESXi installation. I understand there is not any easy update to change that.

Even if we have no backups, I'm afraid of ESXi trying to format THAT SAN during installation. If my plan is this.

For each host ESX installation I do the following:

    (1) using the vMotion I clear the host of all the virtual machines and then close it.

    (1) in the SAN config, I refuse this host access to the San. In this way, I Don t risk losing VMs on the SAN during installation.

    (2) I install ESXi and start.

    (3) the host must be connected to the vcenter.

    (4) in the SAN config, I'm hosting this host to access the San.

    (5) I have let the Rescan host HBAs to the SAN.

Do you see the flaws? Or do I have the perfect Plan?

    -Arne

Hello and welcome to the forums.

As long as you have all your settings (accounts users, information network/vswitch, etc.) documented for these ESX hosts, this plan seems fine.  You could also just draw on the FC cables on the ESX host, rather than make zoning changes.

    Good luck!

  • Copy files from my computer to a host ESX 3.5

    Hello

Relatively new to the naked ESX Server with me on this one. I built on an ESX host with the intent to use it to restore an Exchange mailbox for one of our users. I have 3 comments of the machine (a domain controller, an exchange server and a vista client to reconnect the mailbox). I have those 3 vms on a single internal vSwitch. The problem is that the Exchange database files that I restored are sitting in a folder on our production network. My question is, how do I copy these files to the vm of the exchange on my host ESX Server? Thanks in advance for any ideas.

There are two ways you could do this.

You can add a second vnic to the Vista client. the vnic would uplink for a vswitch with access to the network of prod. Give the client Vista a static IP from the network of production on the new vnic and copy files on via SMB (i.e.
    prodserver\c$ \somepathwheremyfilesare\)

You can also set up a temporary virtual router (http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-9617)

Or I guess you can burn the files to an ISO then transfer the ISO in a data store on the ESX host and then mount the ISo as a CD image (don't forget to clear the bit read only)
