ESX4i host domain migration

Hi all

I need to migrate our current ESX host from 1 to another... I know that if I go into the configuration of the host of the VI client tab I can select DNS and routing, and change the domain there.  Is it as simple as that and then perform a reboot...

I know that the files to check are

/ etc/resolv. Cong

/ etc/hosts

sysconfig...

But in regards to the General procedure, I'll evacuate the host, put it in maintenance mode, select the 'configuration' tab, then click the 'DNS and routing' tab and change the domain it y...  Has anyone done this before... any suggestions?

In addition, after restart and config file on the host check, is there any problem with joining the host to the cluster if it is in a field other than the rest?  I suspect not, but just wanted to check with someone who could have done a migration like this before.

Thanks a bunch,

Chris

It looks like a good plan.  As long as DNS is configured correctly you shouldn't have any problems with the procedure you sketched out.

  • ESX4i host migration of one virtual centre to another

    Hi all

I am preparing to migrate our guests ESX4i 23 out of our virtual center here and move them to the new datacenter and cluster configuration in our production to chicago data center...  All hardware configurations and will remain the same, we just add to the new production of Virtual Center...

Here's what I intend to do, someone had good experience with what might see a flaw...

I guess what I was asking is if I migrate all the VM on the host, put it in maintenance mode, remove the current infrastructure of the vc, then add it to the new Victoria Cross, how can I get the VM out there?

So, can I leave the VM on the host, remove it from the current VC, then add it to the new VC without interrupting the running virtual machines?

In this case, it would be fairly simple...

    Please advise,

    Thanks a bunch,

    Chris

you have to make a cut first, then a remove.  Otherwise if you just try to remove it will not work because the host must be in Maintenance Mode. However having disconnected you can then remove the host without entering MM

  • Questions about the movement of 1 of 3 ESXi4.1-ESXi5 host domain controllers.

Is this environment that I have 3 2008 R2 domain controllers.

    1 physical

    2 virtual

I want to turn off a virtual domain controller and move first host (ESXi 4.1) on second host (ESXi 5).

My concern is that if the NETWORK card in the guest OS is going to get dirty with or it will remain as it is.

If I remember not the mac address will indeed change (unless I hard coded it in the configuration file), but that shouldn't be a problem.

I don't know, what if a new NETWORK card will appear in OS making old useless NIC originally invited me to change the network settings.  Something I don't want to have to do.  I know I've seen a similar problem with a VM linux before, but don't remember seen happen in a virtual Windows machine.  Just want to be sure before that I have to try.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

    Greg

VM migration between hosts will make any changes to the NIC or MAC address. You must ensure that the required networking is presented with two hosts if you want to move between them seamlessly. If the network tag is not the same between the hosts, then you will need to change the settings of the virtual machine and use the drop down to select the appropriate network before turning on the new host. But this should be easy and quick and without surprise.

    See you soon,.

  • Domain migration question

    Hey!

    I kinda a strange question...

Recently a contractor migrated our domain Server 2003 on new servers Server R2 2012. Domain level is still 2003. This brings me to my point, we have an old Windows 98 PC running a piece of legacy software, since the migration, it does not communicate with the domain. He emigrated from DHCP, DNS, and DC services more to the new servers.

I went in the DNS settings on the network of the 98 PC options and he stressed the new domain controller. Since I made this change, we can do anything, it keeps popping up a box on the network of the operation is not permitted when attempting to authenticate the user to the domain.

I know that Windows 98 is not supported in the field of 2008 levels and especially, but because the domain level is always 2003 is only fair that Windows server 2012 cannot communicate with Windows 98? Another that reactivate among domain controllers 2003 old is there any fix?

This issue is beyond the scope of this site (for consumers) and to be sure, you get the best (and fastest) reply, we have to ask either on Technet (for IT Pro) or MSDN (for developers)
  • How do you keep the guests on their hosts (no migration) by making the food stops.

I apologize in advance for the length of this post.

In general do not much poster, but a lot of reading.  First of all, let me tell you that I'm not a GURU PowerCLI, never written one in my life, but there is always a first time.

    Background:

Under VMWare 4.1, that us did not run with HA, for whatever the reason why I don't know.  We had (our UPS manufacturer) Liebert software called MultiLink that when there was a power outage after 15 minutes would run a .bat file on the server vCenter for windows that would log on to the vmware host and run a file .sh that accumulate all the machines on the host and start making judgments on them.  Once completed the host itself would make a stop.

    Currently:

Improved 5.5 VMWare vCenter, have HA and followed now host active in the configuration. We find that we can follow is no longer the practice that we have done less than 4.1.

I got a new version 4.2.4 and that it contains, there is provision in interface with VMWare through the PowerCLI and it stops all guests on the host computer. The host then stops.

I suspect STRONGLY that when the command is issued to stop the host itself, HA or monitoring kick and migrates customers and/or models out of the machine, before the machine shutsdown.  In the first tests, I had a host with 5 models, 1 windows machine and a Virtual Appliance on it.  Everything was arrested, as was that it was supposed to, but the host was brought back to the top he had nothing on it.  Models and machines had been moved (spread) for the two other machines.

This has been confirmed in another test on 01/05/2015 through vCenter client connection, the guests have been stop, the by refreshing the screen you could see the machines leave the test machine, then the server itself, stop.  In a subsequent test, I commented on the "Shutdown the ESX hosts" part and the machine down and remained where they were.  So I'm guessing that it has something to do with HA, surveillance or other thing that needs to be defined differently for him to stop guests from the host, stop the host, BUT not to migrate comments to others running machines.  Do I need to enter the maintenance or standby mode before making the shutdown command?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can avoid the confirmation prompt by adding the -confirm: $false pass.

What follows will check all clusters and those where the priority of restarting is not disabled, is set to disabled.

    Get-Cluster |

    where {'ClusterRestartPriority', 'High', 'Medium', 'Low' - contains $_.} HARestartPriority} |

    HARestartPriority-set off Cluster - confirm: $false

In this way, HA will continue to function (for ESXi other nodes in the cluster), but virtual machines will remain on the crux of ESXi, you stop.

  • Host of migration on 2 no and 2 network vMotion

    Hello

I'm trying to migrate virtual machines between the two groups.  I use a host on the new cluster as the go between.  This host is connected to two no and two networks of vMotion.

I would say that I can't have the two vMotion active network at the same time.  So I uncheck the checkbox vMotion IDE oucederomsurlesecondport a vMotion vmk and allowing it on the other hand.  But I find that I have to reboot the host to get to ping or vMotion to the bottom of the other network for vMotion.

It seems that this is not the second connection.  If I consult the routing table, it is empty for the second connection.

It seems that I just need to force her to arp on the second connection.  Or somehow for vMotion service restart.

    Any ideas?

    Thank you

    Mike G.

The problem turned out the vMotion subnet get pinned to a vmk / uplink that was not yet active.  I discovered using esxcfg-Highway - l

So here's a ping on the failure of network vMotion.

    ~ # vmkping 333.444.1.65

    PING 333.444.1.65 (333.444.1.65): 56 data bytes

    -333.444.1.65 - ping statistics

3 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss

Here's the arp table.  He is aware of the subnet, but it's somehow pinned to the layer of VMware to vmk6.  vmk6 is vMotion on fabric B, which is currently not working due to the non-vmware of the reasons.

    ~ # esxcfg - road - l

    VMkernel itineraries:

Interface of network gateway subnet mask

    777.444.124.0 255.255.255.0 subnet local vmk1

    777.444.125.0 255.255.255.0 subnet local vmk3

    by default 0.0.0.0 555.888.158.1 vmk0

Here are the arp table after I deleted vmk6 via vCenter.  333.444.1.0 is now pinned to vmk5.  Or deactivation of vMotion, dropping the uplink or a reboot would turn the road to vmk5.  Only deleting vmk6 fix it.  vmk5 is vMotion on A fabric, that works.

  • Individual subject domain migration

    Hello

Im trying to migrate a single space of the object "Maintenance assets" of the olive TREE to a new RPD.
So far, I didn't much luck as im getting constant error messages when I try it.
The way im trying to do is first get rid of all other areas first with their respective objects, in the logic and physical layers but also all blocks initializations, Variables and so on...

Im working backwards, from the presentation layer and using the function "query related objects. This seems to be an effective way to do this as it is never finished the consistency without any error checking. The most common mistakes are along the lines, "logical objects missing a physical source"...

What is the best way to go on this kind of action?

Any ideas or advice would be much appreciated!
    Thank you

    The best way is:

    (1) create a new RPD
    (2) tools-> Options-> general tab-> check "Allow import of the repository.
    (3) file-> import-> the repository
    (4) select repository and followed by uid/pwd
    (5) catalogues-> topic select box-> click Add with children
    (6) finish

  • Script to check how the host in the domain and add it to domain

    Hi all

AM face to face strange question as some or little my esxi host is out and it will be difficult to connect and run to another regular activity.

Is there a script that can check together how esxi host are out of area and another script that can add back to the domain.

Thank you in advance for a ton

    Hello.

This little script will check all your hosts domain name, if none it will put the hostname to out.txt file to the current folder:

    $hostnet = Get-VMHost |Get-VMHostNetwork
       $hostnet |foreach{
       if (!$_.DomainName)
        {
        $_.HostName|out-file .\out.txt
        }

       }

Second scenario takes the output generated by the first and adds the domain name of your choice to the host. It will ask you confirmation.

    $nodomainhost = Get-Content .\out.txt
    $domain = "your.domain"
    $nodomainhost|foreach {
    Set-VMHostNetwork -HostName $_ -DomainName "$domain" -Confirm:$true
    }

  • Migrate virtual machines from HP G7(single host) for HP G8 (Cluster) without shared storage

    Hello

I have 2 esxi host (hp dl 380 G8) and put them in a cluster and other host esxi (dl 380 g7) and I have no shared storage and use local disks just now I must spend my VM G7 server a cluster of the G8 but I want to know I can join my cluster g8 g7 and migrate web vmware machines without any downtime?

I want to know can migrate without downtime with localdisk? I have no shared storage

    Best regards

    BAbak

can I join g7 to my cluster of the g8

You can mix into clusters hosts all desired, even Intel and AMD at least that you enable EVC on the cluster (of course, HA or DRS require shared storage compatible/CPU). However, you need not to have even just cluster hosts to migrate virtual machines through vMotion between them.

migrate web vmware machines without any downtime?

Don't know what this "web vmware' but yes, because ESXi 5.1, you can use"enhanced vMotion"to live migrate virtual machines without service interruption from one host to another, even without shared storage:

Migration with vMotion in environments without shared storage

The usual vMotion requirements apply. Also you can only live migrate virtual machines from the old host to the new hosts because of different generations of CPU (and back as long as you don't have bike powered virtual machines on new hosts).

  • Migration of servers to new host and SAN

    Hello

    Current configuration:

2 x ESXi servers, local storage, share nothing.  License of VMWare Essentials

    New configuration:

3 x SAN Eqllogic, ESXi servers. Essential Plus VMWare license

I would like to make the transition to the new configuration with minimal downtime, we have invited a few large (> 1 TB) on one of the servers and I don't want them to be disconnected for more than a few minutes, then a migration cold is out of the question.

I had a thought that I could put the license key more on the old servers and 1 new servers, set the new SAN on the old servers, use VMWare replication to replicate virtual machines among the old servers to the new server/storage, and then perform a recovery.

I would then remove this old Vsphere server, add a new server and transfer the license, then perform the same task on the old server to 2nd.

Once it is finished I remove the old server 2, add the new 3rd server, and move the license.

Can someone tell me if this is possible, or suggest alternatives?

    Thank you

    Dean.

    Hi Dean,

Replication (replication vSphere) VMware will be requires downtime when you are recovering from the old host to new host.

How much time can you afford for downtime?

The recovery process will turn off the source/protected VM on the current host (VM function how long it would normally take to perform a shutdown comments) and destination/recovery VM will be powered on to a new host (again, depends on VM normally, how long it would take for the operating system and services until then a normal diet on the process).

vSphere replication requires vSphere Web Client and other requirements, as described here: 5.5 - replication requirements vSphere vSphere Documentation Centre

    You have a vCenter Server?
What version of ESXi (and vCenter) do you use?

If you don't have a vCenter Server yet, I suggest you install a vCenter server and add all the current 2 ESXi hosts + 1 new ESXi host.

From there, you'll have an ESXi 3 host, then you can migrate current ESXi host for new.

If you are using vSphere 5.1 + you can vMotion, even if the host do not have access to the same storage see this: library of vSphere 5.5 - Migration with vMotion in environments without storage shared

Its quite simple, if you are using vSphere 5.1 +.

-Make sure you have vcenter Server 5.1 + with vSphere Web Client

-Add current hosts + 1 new hosts

-Make sure the vMotion without requirement for shared storage are filled with VSphere 5.5 Documentation Center - requirements and restrictions for vMotion without Shared Storage

-Perform vMotion without process Shared Storage of current host to the new host + local storage to SAN EqualLogic - you can start with small VM and VM less critical first if you are not sure.

-Once all virtual machines have been migrated to the new host + EqualLogic SAN, you can do a maintenance on the current host mode, and then delete the vCenter Server (vSphere licenses will be retrieved)

-Add the 2 remaining new hosts.

If you are using vSphere 5.1 prior, you must present the SAN EqualLogic again 1 new host and current 2 hosts.

Once current hosts can see the EqualLogic SAN, make a Storage vMotion (live migration records) local storage to the EqualLogic.

For first migration vSphere 5.1, there are 2 ways that I can think of:

    1. with vMotion - without interruption

There are certain requirements of configuration for vMotion work: Documentation Centre of vSphere 5.5 - Migration with vMotion

Make sure your classes and new hosts are run in the same processor / EVC mode or matrix, you can check it out here: http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?deviceCategory=cpu

If they are on different EVC Mode, you can turn on the CEV on new hosts.

    The steps are:

S ' ensure that virtual machines are in EqualLogic (you can use Storage vMotion)

-Perform a vMotion from the current host to new host.

-Once all virtual machines have been migrated, you can safely do a maintenance on the current host mode and remove the vCenter Server

-Add the remaining 2 new hosts the vCenter.

    2. without vMotion - requires the interruptions of service commissioning

It's cold migration but without migration of storage, must be less compared to downtime directly cold immigration to localdisk of shared storage.

    The steps are:

S ' ensure that virtual machines are in EqualLogic (you can use Storage vMotion)

-Turn off the virtual machines in the current hosts and migrate (cold) of the host-to-host former New (you can also drag the virtual computer and drop it to the new host).

-Once all virtual machines have been migrated, you can safely do a maintenance on the current host mode and remove the vCenter Server

-Add the remaining 2 new hosts the vCenter.

    tour of DNS caching.

None of these things worked, but did all my config/etc/hosts the migration of multiple domains on a single line to separate lines. Hope this helps someone.

There is a link in this doc for ESX and vCenter compatibility.

Opinion is supported on 3.5 right now. What drivers are you referring to?
