ESXi 4 port iSCSI in question

I'm having a problem with ESXi 4 I can't understand. I have activated the iscsi function and pointed to the right place. But when I do a new analysis for storage again, it brings nothing to the top. If I click on the "Paths" button, it shows the Lun number correctly but under status it shows as DEAD with a red diamond. What I'm missing here? It's the 60-day trial version ESXi 4... im guessing it is a license to use iSCSI. Anyone have any ideas?

Thank you

I have not worked with 7.0.6. 7.2, the command set ALUA is ' Group set < Group name > alua no '. Can you see what gives "Group show - v < Group name > '.

The quick alternative would be to delete the rule to claim ALUA in ESX, IE esxcli nmp ATAS deleterule - ATAS VMW_SATP_ALUA - seller NETAPP - option tpgs_on. I think that's not persistent resets.

• Questions of ESXi 5.1 ISCSI--> cannot establish a network connection (continued)

Hello world

I had a problem there not too long ago (thread link below) where my ESXi hosts could not establish a connection with an IBM DS3500 on start up and "rescan", however their connectivity worked correctly without any problem after commissioning and when a "rescan" finished. We determined that the most likely cause was the unit IBM itself. However, I wasn't completely satisfied.

In order to deepen the question and dismiss my guests being the problem, I created a unit ISCSI myself with two new hosts of ESXi 5.1 (version 1157734).

ESXi signals that it cannot connect to the initiator ISCSI (network error) - but it can run virtual machines and browse data stores?

The configuration is the following:

Test environment:

2 x ESXi 1157734 hosts

1 x server Freenas ISCSI (ZFS R10)

At the start of my ESXi hosts in the test environment, download the same error as our production environment. They also put on the same error message (in the event log) when I "rescan" map of the ISCSI software. However, once the scan is finished, I can't see any error message and everything continues as it should (Round robin, active active). I can get a brilliant flow also. It's as if the errors are almost... false positives?

Example of the error message (test environment):

Connection to the iSCSI target

IQN.2011 - 03.org.example.istgt:iscsi on vmhba35

@ vmk2 has failed. The iSCSI initiator couldn't

establish a network connection to the target.

error

17/10/2013-08:33:35

ESXi hosts are configured as follows:

Test environment:

• (ESXi hosts) Two network cards for ISCSI, one for VM traffic
• NIC1: 10.20.20.2/24, NIC2: 10.30.30.2/24
• (Freenas) Two network cards installed on the ISCSI device (dedicated to ISCSI traffic)
• NIC1: 10.20.20.1/24, NIC2: 10.30.30.1/24
• ESXi is set to round robin, which works properly (I can max on both ports at the same time)
• Two VMKs are related to the ISCSI Software initiator and defined to dynamically discover the two ISCSI addresses
• Unity of ISCSI and the hosts are not on the VLAN, the switch is dedicated to ISCSI traffic (However in the production, the two networks are separated by VLAN.) I removed the in the test environment to simplify everything)
• The vSwitches (who hold a single VMK for ISCSI) are fixed:
• "Promiscuous" mode: reject
• Change of MAC address: accept
• Forged passes: accept
• The traffic shaping: disabled
• No NIC teaming (obviously)
• Each VMK inherits the settings of these

Quick points:

• My hosts use VMware approved NIC in my test environment. My production environment runs on full VMware hardware approved
• Can I use ping of vmk join each each VMK ISCSI initiator
• I can use the nc-z target_ip 3260 command to check connectivity to the port
• The ISCSI test has two network adapters, each on 1 Gbps ports
• I can get around 800mbps per port when copying lots of files (both ports are active)
• I see no error in copying a large number of virtual machines around, or backup files
• I only see errors on start up and "rescan".
• I have two network adapters on each host ESXi dedicated for ISCSI. Each NETWORK card has a single VMK. A single mapped port on ISCSI, the other is mapped to port B (I used to have two VMKs by nic, but I removed that in order to simplify everything)
• I have updated the firmware on our switch of production. No results
• I've used 4 different switches in order to avoid a network problem. No results
• I tested ESXi versions 5.0, 5.1 (799733 & 1157734), all have the same mistakes
• The ISCSI ports are on different networks according to the VMware (I was told not to put on the same network VMKs)

Any ideas? It's starting to drive me up the wall. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I've seen several times in recent months and was beginning to think it is specific to the HP P2000 units because it's the only time wherever I saw him! I now believe that ESX/iSCSI rather than issues of driver or table.

On my last install, I found that errors occur as soon as the table is connected, i.e. before any storage is displayed.

Single host ESX, no guests. 2 Intel adapters to 2 HP past by dedicated HP P2000 1 GB table with all 8 wired ports.

All roads are good, all lights are in the State expected.

It did not affect the use of the storage in question to any site, so there has been no need / a momentum of any further investigation.

B! 886y annoying however!

• vMotion from ESXi 5.0 Update1 app question

We have a two node ESXi 5.0 cluster simple.

-The two hosts are HP DL360 G7 servers with 6 cards. We have 3 vswitches in place, everyone has two related to the assigned physical cards:

. - vSwitch0 (vmnic0 & vmnic1) = VM network and management network on 100.200.1.x/24

-vSwitch1 (vmnic2 & vmnic3) = iSCSI on 192.168.100.x/24 traffic
-vSwitch2 (vmnic4 & vmnic5) = vMotion on 192.168.100.x/24

Our production network resides on VLAN1 via the subnet of 100.200.1.x. VLAN2 (ie: the 192.168.100.x network) is used for iscsi/vmotion traffic only. All network adapters are connected to a set of HP ProCurve gigabit switches. Naturally, the two VLANs are configured on the stack.

Since updated the two hosts with ESXi 5.0 Update 1 we are no longer able to live migrate virtual machines between hosts. We can however, turning off the machine virtual and cold migrate virtual machines between hosts. If enable us vmotion on vSwitch2 and vmotion on vswitch0 it works fine. All physical cards are the same make and model material and use the same driver bnx2 all. Another application U1, nothing has changed on the storage and network infrastructure. The cards connect to their VLAN relevant had ports on the same HP ProCurve. We recorded a call with VMWare, but they considered this as a network problem and have passed the ball to us. Has anyone seen anything like this before?

Any advice or suggestions would be welcome.

I can't say for sure if it is related to the configuration of the network, but I would definitely not run iSCSI and vMotion in the same subnet. Why don't change you the subnet of vMotion for 192.168.101.x (unless it is already used for something else) and then try to vmkping the vMotion IP addresses between the two hosts?

• Nested ESXi hosts and iSCSI POC

People,

I want to set up a proof of concept for a two host, two models NAS for my workplace. At this point, I put a host of ESXi nested using this Vcritical guide - http://www.vcritical.com/2011/07/vmware-vsphere-can-virtualize-itself/

This made wonder. I have two virtual servers within the main install ESXi with the three hosts on the network 192.168.0.x. I then added a second NETWORK adapter on the 'server' and separated from the network iSCSI (192.168.1.x) and pointed to a simple NAS. This went well now. The problem is the hosts nested cannot access the iSCSI network.

It's all a bit above my paygrade, but I can't work on how I can get the hosts nested on the iSCSI network. I tried to add network cards second in virtual computers running virtual hosts and their allocation to the 192.168.1.x network.

Can anyone help to shed light? Someone you will understand my question or what I'm doing? I hope so!

Thanks in advance

HP

Hello

Your primary host see the iscsi network and connect to your nas Server?

It should just be a case of creating a VM portgroup on this same vswitch, with settings of appropriate VLANs if necessary, assigning your esx hosts nested this portgroup vNIC. On the nested hosts themselves, you will need to implement the initiator software iscsi etc. as usual.

• ESXi 4 ports required to be open for remote access

Hi all

I recently setup an ESXi 4 on a customer site and need to access it remotely via the public Internet (ouch...). I need to know which ports need to be opened in the firewall, so I can take control of this host remotely from home.

Any information will be greatly appreciated!

See you soon!

Kevin

This link has all the ports/protocols required to get to the VMware services via a FW.

You might be better served by creating a virtual machine, and then connect to it against directly to the host. If you are using Windows, you can also configure RDP and only open this hole against 80, 443, 902, 903, etc.. Other options, as mentioned above would be a VPN; something like bridge W2K8 RDP.

• separate subnets for the ESX/ESXi management ports (vMotion, manage, FT, etc..)

Is it better to have all of your VMKernel ports on the same subnet or subnets separate (one for each role, iSCSI, management, vMotion, FT)? Are their potential problems with either scenario? Please include the ESX and ESXi. I want to get my setup just as it should. Please let me know also if you need additional information.

I have licenses for ESX and ESXi, but I'm leaning toward ESXi are all vSphere 4 Update 1.

Hello

In fact, you have to use separate subnets for your vmkernel ports but they can run on the same thread. You can share a subnet between a vmkernel and service console, but not between two vmkernels. Just like that. So yes, you need to use several subnets.

• Plan to change VMWare ESXi, but have a few questions

Use VMWare server, but I'm cosnsidering passage to VMWare ESXi. I have a few simple newbie questions and apologize in advance if they are stupid. I tried myself, but have no spare hardware to do and I would like to clarify this before buying a new compatible server ESXi.

1. read the communities that I discovered that ESXi does not support the USB storage device. It takes in charge USB devices or it does not support USB? USB ports will work in guest OS?

2. I also read that it is possible to install and start ESXi on a USB? How is this possible if the USB storage devices are not supported? OK, the BIOS is set to boot from the flash drive, ESXi loads with a RAMDISK, but then does not recognize the device it was loading during the boot process?

3 is supported media such as sound, 3D graphics cards?

4 serial ports taken care of?

5. does a GUI in which it is possible to connect, view and switch guest OS bewtween locally, corner the ESXi server machine, as in VMware server on Linux (with Fire Fox for GUI), or it does not have a GUI at all and is possible to connect to if you use another computer or a terminal to access of the guest OS on ethernet?

6. I also read that esata disks work properly either, but techincally they SATA drives that are connected outside the chassis, and ESXi notice perhaps, that they aren't on the inside. All devices support SATA, hot by desing so how do drive hard hot and hot-switching connection work in ESXi?

Thank you.

1 ESXi does not support the device of USB storage for local data warehouses. I don't remember the extent to which the guest OSes on ESXi. I read that USB is only supported network based USB hubs.

2. you can install ESXi on a USB key and start it. It does not appear as a store of data however.

3. I don't see the option for the installation of sound cards and I do not know the support of 3D video cards.

4. Yes, the serial ports are supported.

5. do you are unable to view the comments from the host OS console. If you need to do this you player, Workstation or Server.

6 ESXi does not support SATA in local storage. It is possible however to use SATA RAID cards that emulate SCSI (Adaptec 210 X for example).

ESXi is essentially ESX without the full service console. Both share the same features and functionality as eachother. ESXi is smaller, hardened operating system that is not running under Red Hat.

• MD3200i iSCSI config question

Hi all

I have a MD3200i with dual raid and 2 hosts modules, I want to reach the maximum connection speed that I can with the 8 x 1 GB on the MD3200i iSCSI ports.

If both of my hosts were to have each 8 NETWORK ports, with the switches between the two could I theoreticly reach 2 x 4 GB links to each host the MD3200i? (1 x 4 GB using MPIO to each raid by host controller module)

If the module port 0 raid 0 controller IP 192.168.130.101, can serve 2 Server separated from different hosts with IP 192.168.130.103 and 192.168.130.104?

hope it makes sense.

Thank you

You can have up to a 4Gbit "pipe" to a single controller with the right settings. You'll want to use 4 subnets for sure and definitely use decent to good (dedicated) switches for iSCSI.

To get an idea of which switches are decent, see Dell Equallogic support matrix, available at en.community.dell.com/.../2661.equallogic-compatibility-matrix-06192013.aspx.

• 5.5u0 ESXi and Adaptec 7805 (Maxview) question

Hello community dea, here is another topic on ESX + Adaptec problem, I couldn't find a solution for mine yet.

Here is the story:

I have a Supermicro Server with controller Adaptec 7805. I joined the lates in VMware ESXi adaptec - 5.5.0 - 1331820-depot and was able to install ESXi 5.5u0 with him.

The release of the list of vib software esxcli | grep-i aacraid:

SCSI-aacraid5.5.5.2.1.41024 - 1OEM.550.0.0.1331820 Adaptec_IncVMwareCertified 2016-03-31

My next step was to get Maxview running. I installed successfully vibs: vmware-esxprovider - arcconf.vib and vmware-esxprovider-arc-cim - provider.vib

Then I installed the Storage Manager latest Maxview of GuestOS on Win2012R2 Installer. So its gets to the and start page, when I entered the credentials his begins to think about a lot of time and just pop: connection failed: internal error occurred.

It's the number one issue.

Number two of the problem appeared when I decided to update my host to 5.5u1. This replaced update my driver with another version and all data warehouses disappeared.

So here are two questions: 1 - How can I change ESXi lates release 5.5 without losing access to data warehouses? 2 - How can I make Maxview work?

Thank you!

in another thread, a man reported that this config works

Arcconf 1.08 1.08 CIM and maxview 1.08.

• ESXi 5 port mirroring (possible)?

Hi all:

Is it possible to configure port mirroring on a virtual switch on ESXi 5? I heard that the feature is supported on vSphere.

• Required for ESXi firewall ports

I intend to place a single ESXi host in our DMZ.

I need to check which ports must be open on the internal firewall to manage this host. That's what I have so far:

443 two-way - to access the vsphere client

two-way 902 and 903 - Access console via vsphere client

22 - for use with SSH management

Anything else?

All I really need is to be able to connect via vsphere client and perform management tasks typicall and view of the virtual machine and SSH remote if necessary consoles.

Thank you!

Yes, I think that this will go well. Unless you are already aware, take a look at http://www.vreference.com/firewall-diagram/ for a good overview of the various ports.

PS: You have access to an NTP server in the DMZ?

• Trying to understand ESXi serial port

I'll have mixed, configuration of a serial port physical to get through to the VM.

We run ESXi 4.1 on machines Prolient HP DL 180 G6. They each have a single physical serial port.

I have a console connected, reliable cisco on the port of phyiscal for the test. Simple config 9600-8-N-1. I use to connect to the com ports of in SecureCRT 6.1 Windows VMs. Sometimes I connect successfully to the cisco console. More often, I just a terminal does not respond. I can find no pattern of work to understand why it works sometimes.

When I create a serial port in the virtual machine settings, how do I know what com receives the connection in the virtual machine? The first created is simply called "Serial1", and the following conditions are numbered incrementally. Is it true that "Serial1" is > Com1? and Serial2 == > Com2? There is a check box available in the "peripheral" VMWare Tools tab; but that's all, it's: a checkbox.

All virtual machines appear to all have a port com1, com2, at the same time, no matter what the hypervisor has on the virtual computer. Probably Windows should have no serial ports except if one is configured, see the 'new' material when the serial number is created in ESXi and always have that one?

When I create serial ports, it seems I can connect as much as I want to the device/dev/tank/serial/uart0 physics. It's not supposed to such that there should be some argument for the port?

Is there a test/debugging I can do at the hypervisor level? When the config fails it is frustrating to have nothing more informative than a Terminal window empty.

Thanks for your time.

I'd take a peek at Digi.com, they make a number of IP based hubs alond with IP based USB h bs series

• ESXi 4.1 iSCSI Shared Datastore

I'm under ESXi 4.1 with Windows Storage Server and iSCSI software targets three servers to store my data stores. I've been using dedicated iSCSI LUNS for each ESXi server and it was working great (MPIO and RR is awesome too). I am planning for disaster scenarios, and I wonder if there was nothing wrong with the help of a store of iSCSI data shared between servers. I do not have vMotion, so I can't migrate directly from one host to another, but I installed a test data store and it spread over three ESXi servers. I moved a virtual machine for the data store that is shared and I am able to add to the inventory on all three servers. I can also start the virtual machine to any host, but its status (Powered On / Off / suspend) appears only in the home that I started in. You see problems with this configuration? I would like to share my stores of existing data with other hosts, so I can't add all virtual machines to the inventory on all servers. Then I can implement a poor-mans vMotion and start the virtual machines from any host.

Thanks in advance!

Hello

There is absolutely no problem sharing a LUN between several ESXs iSCSI. In fact, this is used to create a cluster.

You do not look to have a vCenter. I don't know, what if it's a good idea to have saved several guests at the same time isolated virtual machines. I'd say recording each virtual machine to a single host only.

If you want to move a virtual machine, stop it, remove the host inventory, enter it on the new and start it.

In case of crash, register the VMs failed for the remaining guests and start them.

Good luck.

• Newbie on iSCSI Configuration questions

Hello everyone

I'm new to VMware. I have two questions

(a) once I have add an address IP of SendTargets discovery, how can I update it? for example, if a new target is visible via the IP discovery after that it has already been added in VMware and I want it to appear.

(b) is there a provision the disconnection of one specifying IQN (San identifier)? I went though VSphere Documentation and I couldn't find anything.

(c) VSphere he iSNS support such as Linux (iscsiadm)?

Thank you

Welcome to the Forums-

(a) you will need to go to the section of the configuration of the ESX host storage card in the client vSphere select initator iSCSI, then click Rescan - this cause a target command send sending sllowing to the discovery of new targets

(b) No, there isn't a way to disconnect from a specific IQN I know

(c) to the vSphere, I think not vSphere supports iSNS.

• Missing ESXi VMFS on iSCSI

So I searched the forums and few people seem to have similar problems, but nothing seems to work for me. We have a server network storage FalconStor making Thinprovisioning, mirror, replication, snapshots, etc. So let's test this new system, replicate us a LUN of our EMC Dell, more towards the Falconstor, then break the link (while one of our ESXi server is connected and VM running... gota, put them to the test on the right!)... .so plan is promoting the replica drive, post it on an iSCSI target, connect our ESXi box and presto! But none presto

Are connected to the target iSCSI OK, and he sees this drive... but does not detect the file (in stock) mount/system. I can check it out via "fdisk/vmfs/devices/drives / vmhba32xx:xx:xx and he sees that there is a VMFS installed the disk and displays the appropriate size.» I expected to run vmkfstools-r on the disc, but I get:

Error: failure of vmkfstools: vmkernel is not loaded or not implemented call.

Anyone have any ideas?

See page 114/115 here - http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_35/esx_3/r35u2/vi3_35_25_u2_san_cfg.pdf concerning the EnableResignature / setting of the DisallowSnapshot. Once you have set the appropriate option for your scenario, you will need to rescan only (Configuration-storage adapters).
