ESXi 4 upgrade by using 2 update

Hi, we would like to update our esxi servers 4 with update 2, we have not installed update 1.

We will have a very difficult time to know what is exactly the process. We downloaded "Update server ESXi 4.0 for ESXi 4.0 Update 2.zip Server package" I tried to use Host Update Utility, but it does not work.

We were able to successfully apply the update 2 to VCentre.

We have 5 guests and they run VMware ESXi, 4.0.0 164009 and VMware ESXi, version 4.0.0 181792.

If anyone has a simple walkthru, it would be most appreciated.

Thank you!

Since you're using vCenter using ESXi update Update Manager

  • ESXi 4.1 using VMware Update Manager Update

This is my first time using Update Manager to update an ESXi host.  I have vCenter server and the Update Manager Server installed on a physical machine that has ODBC connections to a database Microsoft SQL on a computer located on my single ESXi 4.1 host virtual.  Realizing that I have to put the ESXi host in maintenance mode in order to upgrade to the latest version, I don't know how to and can continue to use vCenter Update Manager.  My only guess is that I'll have my SQL Server VM to vMotion to another ESXi host and have somehow vCenter and Manager update access to this database in order to stop the VM of the SQL Server to put the host in maintenance mode?  I tried to close the VM of SQL Server when you are connected to vCenter but I lost all ability to do something immediately.  My DC is also on that same host ESXi as well, closing the domain controller affect as well?

If you have only an ESXi server and your VC / database etc all SimCity.EA.com ESXi host, you could consider only the upgrade without using VUM?

    http://www.get-virtual.info/2011/03/24/436/

If your ESX host is in a cluster, the 'Miantenance Mode' operation will be vMotion virtual machines to the other hhosts and you should have no problem.

  • How to use the update updates 5.1.0a to 5.1.0b?

    Sorry, I'm a newbie.

Can someone please advise me on how to upgrade my ESXi of either 5.1.0 & 5.1.0a to 5.1.0b using the Update Manager?

Is it possible to update without having to use the ISO (using the installation of patches)?

    I have 2 main questions:

    1. impossible to update Manager (someone has helped me create a baseline using downloaded ISO "VIMsetup")

-Guest disconnected with weird error console (sorry no screenshots that I discovered that it was a NETWORK card driver problem much later)

-Blocked 26% (if you use the Update Manager)

-some weird message on console, can only view or list a few config

    2. cannot perform direct upgrade of iso or disc bootable on Dell G 12 servers (Dell R320 & r.620)

-No found NETWORK card (if you use disks or virtual disks via iso mount)

The file ~3.4GB (arther than 3 TB) you mention is very probably the package of vCenter Server (VMware-VIMSetup-all - 5.1.0 - 947939) and does not contain installation ESXi (VMware-VMvisor-Installer - 5.1.0 - 799733.x86_64.iso).

Update Manager cannot be used to update or patch vCenter Server, but only the ESXi hosts (or virtual appliances).

  • ESX or ESXi host upgrade procedure...

    Respected VMware Experts,

I'm three differrent customer support and upgrading ESX3.5 host ESX 4 Update 2 following is the scenario of the same thing.

    1) I have a Standalone ESX host 3.5, need to upgrade to ESX 4. Update 2.

    3 VMs

What precautions should I take before upgrading ESX 3.5 to ESX 4 Update 2. What are the steps and details for upgrade ESX3.5 to ESX 4 Update 2, without losing any data (VMs). I do not have hard drives to back up virtual machines 3

    2) on the second site, I have a Standalone ESX host 3.5 requires upgrading to ESX 4 Update 2.

    SAN = 3 TB storage

    5 virtual machines

What precautions should I take before upgrading ESX 3.5 to ESX 4 Update 2. What will be the prerequisite steps and details for upgrade ESX3.5 to ESX 4 Update 2, without losing the VMs data.

Those who have done this several times and created a POS, will be very useful to read 100 pages PDF to do the same.

    Concerning

    MrVMware9423

    (1) check if your hardware supported vSphere 4.1

    (2) suggest upgrade to ESXi instead of ESX

    (3) make sure that you update your vCenter server first and vCetner 4.1 will run only x 64-bit Windows systems

    (4) for the stand-alone version you have separated RAID for ESX and store data if so you can just format the drive on which ESX is installed

    (5) for the site with SAN storage disconnect from host to storage and re - join

Make sure that the upgrade guide is reviewed

  • ESXi integrated upgrade

    Hi all

We have been delivered IBM HS22 blade with ESXi embedded 3.5 on an internal USB.

The version that we need is ESXi 4.0.

    A few questions:

Since it is an on-board version do we get the code IBM's ESX or VMware?

Is it possible to do a new installation rather than an upgrade?

Can you point us to a resource that describes the re - install or update the procedure?

We use a server vSphere without a license server, so I can't add this 3.5 host to our cluster and use the Update Manager.

We use Host Update Utility on stand-alone hosts as soon as we have the good code?

    Thanks,-Jeff

I'd install fresh. If you want to keep the current version for some reason simply replace the USB/SD card. You need 1 GB, so don't go too big. Download the IBM version on the download page of ESXi. Download the vSphere Client at the same time. Since the server versions are a little behind the generic version, you install 4.0. Boot with the CD and choose the USB/Sd as the destination of the installation. Once installed use the host update utility patch to the current level. Patching will retain all of the different IBM parts of the installation.

Manager update allows you to update the host ESX/ESXi, virtual appliances, VMware Tools and virtual hardware to virtual machines to a newer version, with the opportunity to decline the upgrade in case of failure. You can also configure preupgrade and postupgrade custom scripts to run before and after an upgrade. • Apply SP3 to sp3.cab manually instead of using Windows Update?

The original installation software of my PC included only Service Pack 2.  I used the update to upgrade my machine to SP3.  It took a lot of time (about 90 minutes).  What I would like to know... are the installation of SP3 files downloaded to my machine in a format that would allow me to run the update manually without going through Windows Update.  I found the SP3.cab file on my machine... but it isn't but 22.7 MB while updating told me that the download was (if I remember correctly) 66 MB approximately.  I don't want to download the full blown sp3 (314 mb) and I would like to avoid having to use Windows update to update my machine the next time I have to rebuild this machine.  Any suggestions on the best way to do it?

22 Sp3.cab MB isn't the whole update file, AFAIK. It is not yet a complete file.

My advice would be to let Windows Update to install SP3 if you do want to installation offline.

Applications, (Norton and McAfee) are notorious for not not upgrade (or uninstalling) itself.

[You may want to print these instructions for reference offline. If a step said to reboot, reboot.]

    Thanks for your help.

    Oliver

you're all set, but I still love allows you to check if you check these things before upgrade.

    1. Ensure that enough disk space is available on the host for the upgrade or migration. Migrating from ESX 4.x to 5.x ESXi requires 50 MB of free space on your VMFS datastore.
    2. If a San is connected to the host, detach the fibers before continuing with the upgrade or migration. Do not disable HBA cards in the BIOS.
Note: this step does not apply to the ESX hosts boot from SAN network, they the Service Console on the SAN LUNS. You can disconnect LUN that contains the VMFS data store and do not contain the Service Console.
    • VMware strongly recommends that you back up your host before you perform an upgrade or migration, so that, if the upgrade fails, you can restore your host.
    • After the upgrade or migration, test the system to ensure that the upgrade or migration completed successfully.
    • Apply your licenses from the host. For more information, see Reappliquant Licenses after upgrade to ESXi 5.5 in the vSphereUpgrade Guide.

Also I suggest you to read the KB article. VMware KB: installation or upgrade to ESXi 5.5 best practices

And Yes, good luck for your upgrade
