This fact directly to esxi 4.1 to 5.1 can update 1 by using Update Manager?

THX

Yes it is possible, but make sure the vCenter is upgraded to the latest before proceeding with the upgrade of the host

    Dear Experts,

We currently have a version of ESXi 5.1.0 1065491 installed with a customized Image of Dell. We would like to update to VMware ESXi 5.5 Update 2 (build 2068190). We downloaded the custom image VMware ESXi 5.5 Driver Details Dell Update 2 | Reference Dell U.S..

Is it just a matter of starting the host VMware .iso and then selecting Refresh as opposed to install? What we should consider before updating?

    Thanks for your help.

you're all set, but I still love allows you to check if you check these things before upgrade.

    1. Ensure that enough disk space is available on the host for the upgrade or migration. Migrating from ESX 4.x to 5.x ESXi requires 50 MB of free space on your VMFS datastore.
    2. If a San is connected to the host, detach the fibers before continuing with the upgrade or migration. Do not disable HBA cards in the BIOS.
Note: this step does not apply to the ESX hosts boot from SAN network, they the Service Console on the SAN LUNS. You can disconnect LUN that contains the VMFS data store and do not contain the Service Console.
    • VMware strongly recommends that you back up your host before you perform an upgrade or migration, so that, if the upgrade fails, you can restore your host.
    • After the upgrade or migration, test the system to ensure that the upgrade or migration completed successfully.
    • Apply your licenses from the host. For more information, see Reappliquant Licenses after upgrade to ESXi 5.5 in the vSphereUpgrade Guide.

Also I suggest you to read the KB article. VMware KB: installation or upgrade to ESXi 5.5 best practices

And Yes, good luck for your upgrade

  • W10 Upgrade won't let not the W7 updates run

Removed KB3035583 and 2952664 and them hidden, and then click Restart. Can still see '14 updates for W7 are ready to download' but when select 'OK', it does nothing except "W10 upgrade is ready." Cannot see that updates of w7 by pressing 'check updates', but will not be installed.

What I need to see the machine or replace linix?

Already solved the problem - seems Windows 10 upgrade button will not get our way. On machine with w10 installed on w8.1 and seems to work correctly. But W7 portable computers continue to try to push W10 - can see updates on day of w7, but don't be not w10 free in real 'windows update' line and cannot be hidden.

I date of these computers laptops at my convenience but paid for w7 and should be able to update until I'm ready to upgrade.

See a lot of frustration on lines of chatter on this push from the W10. Rather than trashing a computer at a time that all.

  • Cisco ISO Custom - VMWare ESXi 5.5 Upd 2 - VMware Update Manager still shows update 2 required

    Hi all

I just updated one of my guests with the latest cisco image provided on the vmware website (Vmware-ESXi-5.5.0-2068190-custom-Cisco-5.5.2.3).  After the application as an upgrade of the host and then doing a scan against the host in the Update Manager, it shows that ESXi complete update 2 is missing?

I know this is maybe more a problem of vmware, but wanted to see if someone had run into this?

This thank you for the quick response.

  • Hypervisor upgrade ESXi ESXi 4 paid 5.1

We are currently managing the free version of ESXi 4.0, with 8 virtual machines running on it (pretty small machines).  Let's add a second server to our environment to run ESXi 5.1.  We will buy 5.1 ESXi licenses for both servers.  I am currently working on the best way to upgrade my server ESXi 4.0 5.1 when purchase us the license 5.1 and am looking for feedback.

Since the new server will be setup from scratch, is wise to configuration server and vCenter, move the virtual machine to off the area of ESXi 4.0 on the new 5.1 box, box 4.0 upgrade and then replace the virtual machine on the old 4.0 box?  Is this possible with simply being the version of the hypervisor 4.0 box?  I'm looking for in the little downtime as possible.

Any input or advice for the upgrade are greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

    Hi Busterbrown,

You have no downtime to perform the task. Please follow the procedure below.

    1 update/install vCenter 5.1

    2. install ESxi on new Server 5.1

    3. create a cluster in vCenter and add the server (4.0 and 5.1)

4 migrate virtual machines to new server

    5. turn the ESXi 4.0 in maintenance mode

    6. upgrade to ESXi 5.1

    7 balance virtual machines.

  • After the migration of ESXi 4.1 to 5.0 Update 1, ESXi containing the missing data store

I intend to upgrade to an ESXi 4.1 production host, but I want to run through an upgrade of test on a separate machine. I created this using a virtual machine and the upgrade went well. However, now when I insert my vSphere client, I don't see the data store that contains data to my VM.

Before migrating to 5, I had 2 drives, a disk of 4 GB for ESXi, and a 40 GB drive for the data of the VM installation. I could see and access times stores via the 4.1 vSphere client, but once the upgrade only the VM data store is available. Is there a reason that this is the case?

I've updated but has not changed the partitions of data store. I have selected to migrate and keep the VMFS store, which was VMFS-3. I also tried to add the store drive 4 GB with the customer data, but an error message: "the selected disk already has a vmfs data store or the host cannot perform a conversion of partition table.
    Select another disk.

I found this article on error message: http://KB.VMware.com/kb/2000454 , but I never actually removed from the data store. With the help of the 5.0 ESXi update I can see the VMFS store on 4 GB drive, which should have about 3.2 GB of available disk space (the rest being used by the hypervisor).

Recommended someone else try esxconfig-volume - the list, and then use the output to a mount (http://communities.vmware.com/message/1666168#1666168), but the list command had no output at all.

I searched through the forums and Google but you saw nothing.

ESXi 5 has a different architecture, and I think that the problem is the size of the disk (too small) and the partition of scratch required.

  • No esxi 4.1 in 4.1 update 1 updated

I read through some documentation posted by vmware, but it is rather bulky, trying to find a document that defines the path to upgrade directly.

I'm looking to upgrade just esxi 4.1 update 1.

    Do I need new licenses?

I think I must firstly update my vcenter. My existing database still works, SQL 2005 express?

After that, I don't know what the best way is to actually update the hosts. Should I use the VUM to achieve, or the host update utility?

If someone could give the steps to better perform this update, I'd appreciate it.

    Thank you

    Kevin

I guess I need to update the VUM 4.1 Update 1 before the update1 on hosts? I thought I read somewhere that update1 will fail otherwise, if the Update Manager is still at version 4.1?

I'm not sure about this. You can be just right!

I also imagine that it is better that I update vcenter at some point, although it is not necessary for the departure?

    Agreed.

My last thought is if it makes more sense to go directly to update 2, don't know if it's still a way of direct update to 4.1?

Yes, this is supported for vCenter Server as well as the hosts.

    of http://www.vmware.com/support/vsphere4/doc/vsp_vc41_u2_rel_notes.html

You can switch from VirtualCenter 2.5 update 6, vCenter Server 4.0, vCenter Server 4.0 Update 1, vCenter Server 4.0 Update 2, vCenter Server 4.0 Update 3, vCenter Server 4.1 and vCenter Server 4.1 update 1 to vCenter Server 4.1 update 2.

The host update package can be downloaded from http://www.vmware.com/patchmgr/download.portal (or directly: download)

Regarding your question on the database, SQL Express 2005 is still supported with the update 2 (see http://partnerweb.vmware.com/comp_guide2/sim/interop_matrix.php)

  • How upgrade ESXi 3.5 U3 to ESXi 3.5 U4 without VirtualCenter?

The upgrade guide published by VMware is 100 pages and seems to assume you have VirtualCenter. How ESXi improved, U4 without the use of VirtualCenter?

    Nick,

I understand your frustration. VMware tends to complicate things a bit, but once you learn to read and (lots of reading) you'll have as its all not so bad. But without going to the topic far, VMware provides everything you need to update your server ESXi/servers very easily. The method that Tony posted above is the way to do it and is fully supported IS the SAME method that I recommended. I have almost 200 guests that I update with the infrastructure update utility. When you install the VI Client on your machine from management, it asks you if you want to install the Update Manager Service, you MUST place a check box this box for the installed application. If you do not have it, re - install your infrastructure client and make sure that you have selected him. When you do, run the app, select the server from your list that you want to update, it checks for updates and if you want, appkly them. You must reboot the host AFTER updates are applied, but after hours. The walk through above is entirely correct.

I hope this explains more, but you should have installed program, which is installed when you install the client infrastructure.

  • I wiped and recovered from my CD of my operating system to windows XP due to a virus, now my system XP is SP1 (version 2002) and needs to upgrade, how can I get the old updates please?

I am operating windows XP, but it is more difficult to download anything, I can only assume its because my system recovery disk brought me originally pack 1 and missing essential items in my system which is used to enable automatic updates to work to get my system back to normal.

    Preliminary work:

Download the installation files of SP3, IE8 and Microsoft Security Essentials, which is an effective antivirus/antimalware program. I prefer to keep these (and other useful files) on a USB key, but this is optional. Here are the links to all the installation of three files:

    http://www.Microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?ID=24 (for SP3)

(You can TOTALLY ignore the message "intended for it professionals"!)

    http://www.Microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&ID=43 (for IE8)

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows/products/security-essentials (for MMS)

    1. physically disconnect from the Internet. Also unplug all unnecessary devices!

    2. temporarily disable the automatic updates. To do this:

Start | Control Panel (switch to Classic view if not already selected). Automatic updates

Select "Turn off automatic updates" and click OK.

    3. install the SP3. Restart TWICE.

    4. switch to IE8. Restart TWICE. (Note: it is important to let IE at the level before the upgrade to SP3 IE6.) After you are in SP3, then you can switch IE6 to IE8).

    5 install MSE.

(What happens very often is that someone has their software antivirus running as they try to install SP3, which often translates into chaos! "This is why it must be done after installing SP3 and IE).

    6. make sure that firewall Windows is activated (it should already be):

Start | Control Panel | Security Center

(Now you can physically reconnect to the Internet. Update Antivirus program.)

    7. visit Windows Update to download and install only the critical security updates. Restart each time you are prompted.

    8. reactivate the automatic updates.

  • New upgrade of Windows 7 will not get updated

I've just updated for Win 7 SP1 home edition Premium on DVD. This is a new installation of XP. The automatic update feature is pasted on updates. I can download manually, but the automatic update feature does not work. I also tried to update IE8 on IE11. I can manually download the package, but to demand that fails when it tries to download the updates. I also tried IE9 with the same results. I even tried the free update to win 10.  It downloads fine, but fails to demand, when it searches for updates. All the other features of the Win 7 upgrade work very well.

I searched and read this forum posts about it. I tried many suggested fixit downloads, and a few other KB downloaded manually updates without success. Still, it does not solve the problem. It just keeps searching for updates forever. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

I assume that you have followed the instructions I already gave you exactly I realized...

Let it run so that it provides updates.  This can take hours.

I do this all the time and rarely ran into difficulties you describe.  Tips on installing a little both are just stupid.  Let just the thing take what time it is necessary to run it.

    Another thing can help:

Go directly to the Microsoft Download web site and get KB3102810, install it.  Which can sometimes speed up the process of WU.
