ESXi 6.0 by APC UPS shutdown

Dear community,

According to specifications, APC, PCNS only works upwards to 5.5 VS. Someone has already tried with 6 VS? Or is there another way to stop free a host of 6 of ESXi through a UPS?

Thank you and best regards,

Jens Graven

It works for me using the PCNS 4.0 and ESXi 6.0.0 2494585

  • Question APC UPS - using documents lamw and j.holland - VIMA ESXi 4.0

    Hi guys,.

I've implemented our UPS with our ESXi server according to document (revision 4)

    http://VIOPS.VMware.com/home/docs/doc-1341/version/4

    Note

that revision 4 of the document is not that scripted lamw,

but using the ssh hack. Everything works beautifully when I invoke the

script ups_shutdown manually from the console for ESXi does not support:

    #!/bin/bash
    VMID=$(/usr/bin/vim-cmd vmsvc/getallvms | grep -v Vmid | awk '{print $1}')

    for i in $VMID
    do
      STATE=$(/usr/bin/vim-cmd vmsvc/power.getstate $i | tail -1 | awk '{print $2}')

      if [ $STATE == on ]
      then

        /usr/bin/vim-cmd vmsvc/power.shutdown $i

      fi

    done

    sleep 30

    /sbin/shutdown.sh
    /sbin/poweroff

First of all, to the right of the bat in the first line of the script throws and error (-file of ashes not found error). So I had to remove that (no idea why?).

When I run this script from the (unsupported) ESXi console, all right, all the computers shut down virtual and, in the end, therefore the ESXi.

When I run this script to VIMA (ssh to the console, remote script execution), only the VIMA machine stops. If I modify the above script does not close the VIMA, all virtual machines (except of course VIMA) stops and made the ESXi...

VIMA is the first machine that gets shutdown - it has the Vmid lowest. It seems that this causes the rest of the script to stop running... How is that possible when in fact it is running on the ESXi Server?

I'm pulling my hair out on this one (or what's left of them). Does anyone have an idea why it does not work...? lamw?

    Thanks in advance guys.

    Andrzej

The reason why you should delete/bin/bash because ESXi 4.0 not supported console Busybox has more a symbolic link to/bin/Ash bash that resembles the bash environment, so that would make error if you try to specify the path that does not exist.

About the scheduling of the production of vmsvc/getallvms, you can always do a grep - v on VIMA VM is not part of the list and have a separate condition which which will close at the end.

  • Problem configuring APC UPS and VMA

I recently bought an APC Smart UPS 1500 and the Network Management Card so that I can gracefully shutdown my ESXi 5 guests and guests when the UPS is on battery. I'm just following the instructions here http://nam-en.apc.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/11588/~/install-pcns-3.0.1-on-esxi-5.0-with-vma-5.0 . I have gotten stuck on page 55 where I check the communication. When I run the command 'vicfg-NIC - l' he asks me a username and password. I tried to use admin, root and vi-admin passwords possible, nothing helps. I always "error connecting to Server"https://localhost/sdk/webService': Connection refused ""

Now if I plan a stop of the inverter, the agent of the APC on VMA shows he knows a stop that happening, but it does not stop is ESXi guests or hosts.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thank you

    Andrew

You must ensure that your server has been successfully added to vifp.

    sudo addserver vifp

    Make sure it is added:

    vifp mailing lists

    Then, run vifptarget s

Then only the command 'vicfg-NIC-l' will work without additional options required.

  • RN214, RN NV + and APC UPS 1500

    Hello

I try to configure my RN NV + and on the RN 214 (new) to find my UPS (1500 APC SmartUPS)

I don't understand to work. The NV + to see the inverter with USB, but recently (since I was two traps) I went to a network management card in the ups.

Can someone tell me exactly how to connect the two RN to the UPS for both of them can benefit from 'off' when necessary?

    The NV + a 192.168.2.3 RN

    The RN 214 has 192.168.2.5

    The ASI has 192.168.2.6

    Thanks for the info!

The normal solution with two ReadyNAS is to connect a NAS to USB port of the inverter and then set up the second ReadyNAS to control the inverter if the directly connected NAS.

For example, to connect the RN214 to the APC, click Settings UPS on the RN214 wheel and check 'enable the attached UPS network monitoring '. Then check the box the NV + 'Activate UPS physically attached to a ReadyNAS remote control' and enter the IP address of the RN214.

You also want to make sure the two NAS are connected to the same router or switch, and the switch/router is also protected by the ups.

One drawback is that the directly connected NAS should be on all the time.

  • Liebert UPS Shutdown of Windows 2K 3 server

We have a nFinity Leibert UPS that is connected to a Windows Server 2003 x 64 via a serial cable, the application that monitors the UPS is called Multilink.

In our ESX 3.5 environment, I had a couple of orders and stop all VMware hosts and guests using plink.

However, because our environment has been upgraded to 4.0 and re-install it demand, it isn't is no longer an automatic stop of VMware. While the program works as planned, it is now one identifier. Which is not ideal view of our environment.

Here's how I set it up:

    (1) the Multilink software is installed on Windows 2003 x 64

    (2) in the case of low battery or stop senario, the following command is issued: "C:\Windows\System32\plink.exe" - ssh - v VMware.FQDN.com-l Panel multilink - pw Liebert "/ usr/bin/sudo/bin/bash /home/multilink/PowerOff.sh.

    (3) on the host ESX, a user called with the password, links multiple Liebert was created.

    (4) the record as root have added: multilink Panel ALL = / bin/bash, / sbin/shutdown-h now in the/etc/sudoers

Now, for plink for SSH key on the server I run the command, but remove the ".sh" of the PowerOff.sh. That works very well, user logs on successfully Multilink in. However, try to run the command (I did as a trial site DRP) all works above, execpt it requires now a password before you run the PowerOff.sh file. Then the system shutsdown as expected.

I think that there is enhanced on ESX 4.0 security which was not previously on 3.5. Is anyway to get the command to execute without asking for a second password entry?

But the password is the password of the user Panel multilink?

If so it is in this order

    usr/bin/sudo /bin/bash /home/multilink/PowerOff.sh

And be rechecked the sudoer configuration, where you have to activate this command "/ bin/bash /home/multilink/PowerOff.sh" with option NOPASSWD, like this

    multilink ALL=/bin/bash /home/multilink/PowerOff.sh NOPASSWD: ALL

  • APC PowerChute on VMware ESXi 4

    Hello!

We have a problem with the ESXi 4 during the test with our UPS APC SUA-2200. We have 1 Server ESXi. The VMAs won't close the low when ESXi receive the signal to stop, then when the UPS battery. So when the battery dies the machine just off non-stop virtual machines. The inverter has a network management card installed. We have deployed a vMA to our ESXi and installed software (NCP the APC) PowerChute. If the status is as follows:

    1. the management of the network on the map of the UPS works properly (we can access the Web interface of any computer)

    2. the vMA's a good Powerchute software. We opened all require ports with iptables. If we can reach the PowerChute webUI.

    3. we have configured the ESXi with vSphere to automatically start/stop of the system. If we restart the ESXi with the vShere system shut down the Virtual Machines correctly.

    4. the PowerChute can communicate properly with the network card in the UPS. And the vMA receives the signal to stop correctly. But the vMA only himself stops and leaves the ESXi on, it's our problem.

How can we force the vMA to stop our ESXi?

Have you experienced a problem like this before with the PowerChute, or do you have any idea what causes this error?

Thank you very much for your help!

    Kind regards

    Robert

    <! Session data>

With APC UPS the time of battery remaining to the stop signal can be configured (duration of low battery) to more than 24 minutes on the 750RM I used to test this.  I suggest you to increase the time well beyond five minutes.

Also, it is useful to reflect on the ability of the battery to return, that is how the batteries can be charged before the UPS will be re - activate the output.

If the UPS is completely exhausted and AC is restored, provided that the BIOS is configured so as to always active on the connected server, the server will resume (and start the virtual machines, eventually).  However, if the AC is again interrupted, which from my experience with power outages, is quite likely, it is perhaps not sufficient capacity to complete startup and resume and then start again a normal shutdown.  Where specifying relative to returns high battery capacity, say 45%, and can be sensitive to back any minute for further filtering.

All virtual machines must be shut down or suspend in politics, as you found it.  It should be noted that the time between each of them can be reduced by the value default of 60 seconds and only provided with vmware tools are installed, the routine progress at the next VM immediately as a stop or suspend is over.  Operation of these at the same time can well take longer if because it would be huge disk contention generated for what is basically sequential write IO.

One of the advantages of the Powerchute software Windows that is will stop the (virtual) machine, it runs after running some scripts are defined, in this way the question of sleep-curriculum vitae you mention is likely to be avoided.

    Hope that helps.

  • esxi, vcli windows Shutdown host

Hi all, I'll put up my esxi stopped when the APC is running out of battery. The way I work on is to map the USB port to a computer virtual windows (on the same host esxi) and run the shutdown command host of the built-in windows xp option power management once batter reaches 10%.

you are using the version free ESXi, which is fine, but you cannot use the LCIs to automate tasks unless you have a paid license. It is a restriction of the CLI/API, you must have a paid license to access these two write operations. When you use the free version, you can only 'query' or reading the API, but you cannot perform write operations.

  • Doesn't have a controlled stop on ESXi 4.1 U1

We have a 3 HA server cluster running ESXi 4.1 U1 patched to 433742 with the bundle HP ESXi 4.1 1.1 and the acidification of NMI HP driver installed on all.

When occur with our UPS to initiate a stop, 3 servers ESXi killed all the VM without stop them gracefully.  ESXi 3 hosts seemed so gracefully shut themselves down.

The power is restored, all the VM has started at the same time.

We use a 5000 VA APC UPS network management card installed with the PCNs 3.0.0 on the vMA.

To configure Shutdown, I followed the instructions on the site of APC here http://Nam-en.APC.com/app/answers/detail/A_ID/11398/kW/PowerChute%203.0%20esx/session/L3RpbWUvMTMxMTc3NTc5MC9zaWQvQTdEY3QxQWs%3D

All guests of ESXi 3 have start and stop virtual machines with the system is activated with the default close delay set to 30 seconds and the shut down of comments stop action.  All virtual machines are set to manual start according to best practices of VMware.

The default cluster HA what a virtual machine recovery low priority.  Most VM is set to use the cluster for the priority of restarting VM configuration, however, we have our servers with other dependants of servers on them the average value of DC and vMA set to high.

Any ideas where I have gone wrong?

Don't know if this helps or not... I never really had success using the vMA to the judgment of our guests...  I resorted to writing a powershell script that connects a Windows VM with the software of the installed APC network downtime.  I downloaded on my http://blog.mwpreston.net/2011/10/19/powercli-to-shutdown-vm/ blog feel free to change and use it however you want... If this is the way you want to go... it is similar to the vMA solution, just using powershell instead of the sdk and a guest of windows instead of the vMA.

  • Questions about ESX + UPS Solutions and soft stop

Hello everyone.  I am very new to VMWare, so please pardon my beginner questions and I hope I have posted this in the correct location.

I am currently working as a developer for Tripp Lite.  Our companion based on SNMP ups (UPS) software product is the sequel to PowerAlert, and I received a few days worth of time to do more research on the possibility of supporting VMWare ESX/ESXi and stop the server.  I did some research on this last month, where I found the scripts by William Lam and an alternative SSH (http://vmwaretips.com/wp/2009/01/16/mass-vm-shutdown-script/).

I understand there are a few methods scripted to make judgment, which one can be found here: http://viops.vmware.com/home/docs/DOC-1341.  A second solution is to install APC PowerChute interface (available only on ESXi?) command line.

The main issues I have at the moment are:

1 can all install VIMA?  Is a closure that installs on VIMA and runs from this platform a viable, or is the command-line support interface option a must - have for the general user base?  VIMA and the developer (http://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vima/vima10/doc/vima10guide.pdf) Administrator's Guide leads me to believe that anyone can install VIMA, and that it just comes not preinstalled on servers that are provided with the interface of the console.

2 can. a person there will now be a licensing problem with the help of scripts to stop lamw? Speculate as to whether or not this issue affects most of the users? Initially, I found the related commentary here: http://www.engineering.ucsb.edu/~duonglt/vmware/ .  The comment was that a new revision of ESXi "may not allow write operations and require that the user purchases or licenses ESXi to take full advantage of the API of VI (read/write).  William Lam also said in another forum thread, "" If you use at least allowed Foundation or ESX classic, then this script will work. ". Please take a look at the documentation for more details. "What documentation is specifically intended and where I could see him again?

    3. the VIMA Administrator's and Developer's Guide also shows you get a 64-bit Enterprise Linux when you install VIMA.  Does anyone know which kernel version is it? (I'm not any kind of expert on Linux kernels.)  The APC Linux software seems to be installable on the interface of the console; What kernel and the kernel version that would be based on?

It is type of a crazy thought, but in cases where the stop scripts will not work due to license issue, any who would consider even install on all virtual machines stop SNMP agent software and the configuration of the inverter to launch the stop on all virtual machines? (as an alternative to buying the ESX license...)   Or all the virtual machines share the same IP address?

Thanks in advance for reading and review.  The answers, suggestions, links etc. are much appreciated.

    (1) Yes, VMware VIMA is a free VAPP (Virtual Appliance), it is currently sinking a stripped down RHEL 5.2 x 86-64, it comes on pre-installation with the VI Perl Toolkit & RCLI (renamed to become vSphere SDK for Perl & vCLI) that uses the API VMware SDK and to communicate with hosts to vCenter/ESX (i)

    (2) the license situation is also explained here http://vmetc.com/2009/03/31/esxi-u4-ends-free-version-read-and-write-access-from-the-rcli/ this is something vs VMware licenses something with my scripts, you also have some alternatives, including VMware VIX http://communities.vmware.com/thread/205815

with the release of vSphere, a new version of vMA should also be discontinued which has some changes, but the underlying system of RHEL is exactly the same.

Currently, the ideal situation is to be able to install some type of management on VMware VIMA/vMA agent to monitor your UPS device, whatever that may be, and then use the VMware API to properly host and the VM (s) to stop. To be able to do this, you will need your ESX/ESXi product to be certified at least the license to the Foundation, otherwise the VI API is only read-only which means that you will not be able to perform all the operations that are useful against the VM (s) or guests. If you are looking to develop a management agent that will install on VMware which is probably an interesting feature of the 3rd part, I consider to communicate with VMware and more information as a partner. You can also develop your product on ubuntu or any UNIX/LINUX OS open and distribute a paralytic that can run out of the box after download.

The real witch hunt, this is how you'll be powering down of the VM (s) / hosts and even once, ideally, we would like to use the VI API, but you'll be govered by the VMware licensing policy and this is how you sell your product in order to ensure that your customers use at least the Foundation license and can not only use the FREE ESXi version and use your UPS utility and expect it to work.

I hope this puts you in the right direction =)

  • How to turn off ESXi 3.5 U4 (free edition) by script

    Hello

We have two Dell 2950 III 2 running ESXi 3.5 U4 connected to two 2 APC switched PDU which is in turn connected to a 8 KVA APC UPS.  I followed the guide of William Lam using VIMA to stop the virtual machines and hosts http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-9531 and discovered that it won't work with U4 http://communities.vmware.com/message/1213115#1213115

My new plan is to install APC PCNS on virtual machines (7 on each host for a total of 14) so that the inverter can stop them gracefully in case of power failure.  The next step is to close the ESXi.  The RCLI can be used to stop the ESXi host?  It comes to the RCLI does not not for virtual machines with the free version or is - everything that concerns the RCLI, which no longer works?  The alternative would be to have one of the virtual machines, perhaps the same machine VIMA, run a script to close the outlets on the PDU which hosts are connected to.  I prefer the first option, but if it is not possible on the free version then it would be obligatory.  I hope that someone else has solved this problem before and can provide feedback.  Thanks for any help.

    Mac

As stated in the thread you referenced, no vCLI/RCLI command will work requiring more read-only permissions, a stop at the host ESX (i) is considered to be a write operations and will not work. You can unlock the busybox does not support console and use SSH key pairs to initiate a stop, but you won't be able to do so via any vCLI or all VMware API through the read-only mode.

  • MacPro UPS connection.

Would it not be smarter to cut and edit the OEM for a Macpro 2010 power cable so that it fits in an APC ups on or cut and connect a surge protector power cable so it can fit into an APC out and have all its points of sale back to the UPS?

Why should you change cables or power cords for use with an inverter? I certainly didn't need to do. You're not being maybe clear in your statement of the issue.

  • APC Battery Back for Windows Vista Business

I've updated the UPS battery APC back up software with the suggested program of Vista. But I have a question of power even with a new and work APC UPS. When my power goes out the PC everything stops. When I used it on XP the software would stop and disable the OS for me. Is there a way to stop the Vista power Plan, it is like I have a battery for a laptop, but it is a desktop machine?

There is no way to disable Power Options.  If it offers an option to on your PC laptop I suggest you use the same settings as for the PC.  Personally, I use optimum performance because I do not use the battery that much (and it suggests to you since you have a PC where there is no battery).  Power options does not control the passage of the CA to the notebook battery when power is lost - who is buried in some system files that I don't know how to access (and it probably cannot be changed even with a registry tweak because he was such a natural operation).

I suggest that you review the software you have installed (and installation procedures - it can be rules about how and when to install the software and when connect the unit) again - and also double making sure this is the right software for your version of Vista (for example, it can have different options for 32-bit and 64-bit, etc.).

I suggest you go to the technical support for help, because I don't think that it is a problem of Vista http://nam-en.apc.com/cgi-bin/nam_en.cfg/php/enduser/acct_login.php?myq_ilp.php&ISOCountryCode=us (you may need to create a new user account if you have never been there before).  You can also chat with a support agent: http://www.apc.com/support/chat.cfm.

APC has a forum like this also but adapted to the issues and APC products.  You will get probably more help, because the participants are more familiar with the products, software, and related problems.  Here is the link: http://www.apc-forums.com/index.jspa.

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck!

  • Help determine the correct UPS for my office

I have a hp media center pc m8120n and I want to get a UPS size correctly for this. Operating system is Windows Vista Home Premium (32 bit), memory is / 3GB. It has a DVD/CD burner and two 300 hard disks of BG. The display is a H - P w2207, 22 "LCD.

FYI, the screen shoots 65 watts, the computer has a 300 Watt power supply, and the label at the back of the Cabinet says 8 amps. So the question is, how do you determine the correct (I would like to be able to operate on battery power for at least 10 minutes) the capability of the inverter.

I suggest a 750va for your application unit. You can also run the APC UPS Selector and see what he suggests.
