ESXi: SAS Raid 1 Boot w / SATA for backup?

Situaltion:

  • There is currently no effective backup strategy.  Download that data over a slow WAN link can be used to restore or install timely.

  • 2 units of each SCSI 146 GB for $100 / month.  2 each 1 TB SATA disks for $100 / month, provider supplied NAS 300 GB for $150 / mo.  Seller provided iSCSI for 300 GB to $200 / month.

  • Cost per GB SCSI is not yet close to that of SATA.  Two 146 GB drives would be very marginal.

  • I intend to load balancing and cluster two sites on servers with something like CARP.  I am open to any suggestion using NAS and iSCSI.  The main things that matter are mysql used by http, http and email.  Sites are dynamic and use PHP which requires the session data.

Mission:

  • Store copies of virtual machines, store ISO images, make backups of the operating system and perform backups of application server to provide access to the required software and backup and highspeed images.

  • Retain the ability to balance the load and 2 cluster sites.

Equipment available:

Execution:

I need your ideas to develop a good strategy.

1. Yes.  You can assign to ESX directly and create a VMFS out of it, and then give that space for the virtual machine that you use for the backup.  You have to be careful and make sure that go you through the HCL (vmware.com/go/hcl) to get a SATA controller supported.  Not all controllers will work and be recognized by ESX.

2 Yeap.  You need not necesarilly CYGWIN for NFS, there are tools of $ M that can be loaded as well Windows services for unix, either will endeavour to provide an NFS server.  The downside is you need a windows license, but the customer is handy to have.  You can use a virtual linux machine, and even if you can't use the vi client, you can use the remote cli tools that are available for Linux.  Vima (VI Management Assistant) unit is a device based on linux with the remote cli installed, might want to take a look if you have not already.  You can use samba on it and be able to map a drive as your windows machines.

3. Yes, absolutely.  If you have an NFS server, you can also use it as a data store NFS for the 2nd Server.

4 VCB is very convenient and it will allow you to skip creating a server and the export of the step of the vm, but you will still need to configure vcb proxy, which will need a windows server.

  • Help Setup RAID SATA for ESXi 4.1

    Hello

It is the first time that you try to use vmware.  Any help is greatly appreciate!

I just built a server around the Intel s5500hcvr mother. I have 6 SATA HDD I want to set up in a RAID. The integrated RAID controller seems to be very limited and does not seem to be supported by ESXi 4.1 (when I run ESXi 4.1 installation and it asks for a location for installation, all my discs are individually listed instead of virtual drives that I created with the RAID controller)

    My questions:

    (1) what is the suggested configuration of HDD (RAID levels / number of berries) for ESXi 4.1?  Can I create 1 RAID 10 array and set everything up to that?  or take one of my disks and install esxi 4.1 on it and then create a RAID with the rest of my discs and use it to store data?

    (2) anyone can provide links to some SATA RAID controllers that are known to work with ESXi 4.1 (and is the supposed to recognize virtual readers created by the RAID controller setup ESXi 4.1)

Your motherboard has a RAID controller software which, as you have discovered, is completely not taken in charge by ESX/ESXi... You will need to get a RAID controller that is on the HCL for SAS and SATA hard drives (not one with battery backup write cache) so you can use any type of RAID configuration.

My preference for Internal RAID configurations (on the host) are two drives mirrored for ESX/ESXi to reside (preferably being SAS 10 k or 15 k RPM, 73 GB or 146 GB in size) and then another table for the data store. You'll want to keep the data slot store table 2 TB-512 b size in order to present to ESX/ESXi as a LUN. Or you will need to get a RAID card this split of the support to the top of the table in the smaller of the virtual drives that can be presented for ESX/ESXi and LUNS.

Search for controllers using the LSI MegaRAID chip as a good first lap. Some Adaptec cards should work, but I've seen people post questions on those recent (more recent than in the past). MANY manufacturers rebrand/efficiency the LSI MegaRAID Controllers server, such as the Dell PERC 6 series cards.

For the use of 4 disks SATA, RAID 10 (on a BBWC, fully supported, controller) will give you the best performance. It will compare with SAS drives however. IF you do not plan on any virtual machine running with anything beyond light IOPS / s then you should be ok (or with very light loads)... If this is going to be a production server, then get the SAS drives all around.

  • If anyone has installed ESXi on an old post XW8400 and make use of the SAS RAID?

So I dug up an old HP XW8400 Workstation, but it is missing some parts and I thought I'd see if anyone has this thing running with the SAS RAID, because most of the forums of discussion and problems seem to revolve around the SATA RAID. So is this still possible? I do not want to invest money and then have NOTHING to do...

Well, you're lucky, because I had this question a long time ago, but I never thought that someone else would have taken the trouble but YES - it is supported - even if everybody out there seems to focus on the SATA RAID I took not stable worth, since I use SAS disks in my workstation , because they are MUCH faster and can support a flow MORE. I have ESXi 1483097 5.1 Build running with 2 450 GB SAS drives in a RAID 0 configuration, and the system just hums...

It is an old machine, but I was surprised that he was able to follow with the latest versions of ESXi, that's why I don't bother throwing, so if someone is there looking into the purchase of a good workstation MARKET that supports ESXi 5.1 with dual Quad Core Xeon, 32 GB of RAM, and SAS RAID so you won't go wrong with this one. You will encounter a small problem though, but I guess I'll wait for others to try to run this configuration that I share this juicy tidbit, although it is relatively easy to overcome and all depends on how you run ESXi...

I know if you tried and GB SAS...

I hope I can help here!

    Hello

Please refer to controller RAID LSI - HBA equivalence mapping | ServeTheHome and ServeThe.Biz Forums and search for a provider (DELL, IBM, etc.) marked controller LSI.

2108/2208 chipset based ones should work fine with VMWare 6. Be sure to get one with a saved stack cache (BBU) or a flash saved to get decent performance.

Double check with VMWare HCL to ensure compatibility to the version 6: VMware Compatibility Guide: search system

  • Driver RAID WXP Neer and CISS for my Satellite C650 - 10K

Anyone know where I can find the driver Raid and CISS for my Satellite C650 - 10K?

    Hey Buddy,

Are you sure you need to RAID or SCSI (not SSCI) for Satellite C650 driver?
As far as I know this model doesn't support this type of material

I think that you need drivers for the SATA controller. This package is called Intel Storage Manager and can be downloaded from the official website of Toshiba.

Here is an interesting article on installing XP with SATA drivers:

  • Xw8200: Error on Boot to Sata cable

During startup, the message begins by "mistake of the Sata cable 1796" and indicates the color of the cable and will there be a performance issue. " I have four hard drives and a player.  Anyway, I changed the layout of the insert and what ever I do the mistake of 1796.  In fact, I unplugged all the cables except for the main boot drive - sata and I get error 1796.  And Yes, the Bios is being updated - this machine, Windows 7 Pro works with 32 GB of memory.

I would like to ignore the message, but I keep losing after starting my G: drive. In fact occasionally when the system starts to run a chkdsk on drive G. No bump in the road. However I'll end by time G drive missing. I then need to reboot to recover the disk G. I ran Chkdsk and SCP.

Indeed drive G (WD 1 TB), I downloaded the WD Diag utility. All Western Digital drives, past and G drive I even ran the trial extended - and it happened.

My conclusion is therefore that I defintely need address this situation of cable - and free of any error starting 1796 future. Is there a cure?

    Thank you!

In several places, I found that the error occurs when the SATA ports are missing something on SATA (0) or SATA (1)

I installed my esxi and later, I checked only have a data store, and do not appear datastore2. Only appear the first and I don't know how I have to do to see this partition on my viclient.

I need to explain a bit.

    Excuse my expression.

What RAID controller do you use in the servers for the RAID-5?

Are you able to see the physical partition to RAID-5 at the start of the server?

  • This hard drive is compatible with my laptop? Apple 80 GB HDD 3.5 SATA for my Compaq CQ62, the hard drive that I have for that one is a "WD 500 GB 2.5 SATA II.

I plan to buy an Apple 80 GB hard disk 3.5 SATA for my Compaq CQ62, the hard drive that I have for you is a "WD 500 GB 2.5 SATA II.

Ports appear as it will keep and everything, but I'm curious to know, if I get this drive, I'll be able to install my Macintosh on that hard drive and use it on my laptop Compaq CQ62 or not?
If this isn't the case, then I'll be able to install Windows 7 or uBuntu on this hard drive? The hard drive will fit even on my laptop? Thank you!

  • I can't trust iCloud for backup?

My wife and I have several Macs and iPad backup iCloud. Today we have connected and the documents of our Pages are gone — not a few documents, but precious and many lost work. Lost? I've seen other posts related to Pages and sheets of deleted documents and unrecoverable IOS after the most recent upgrade. I visited iCloud.com and searched recoverable documents in the 'Advanced' section to see if the papers were there - they were not. I checked to see if iCloud in 'Settings' with all our devices - it is. Apple said at the time that we shouldn't count on iCloud for backup, because they cannot ensure our documents stored cloud will survive our specific to the device updates? Seriously? So I should relegate all iCloud to toy status devices because they are not reliable for work? Why our unit upgrades would replace somehow data that was stored "safely" remotely? Wasn't that the point of iCloud 'trust' in the first place. Can anyone talk me down off that ledge I'm about to throw my (many) features of work Apple out of? Thank you.

Apple do not back up user iCloud storage and does not announce that iCloud is a backup service. It is a place of convenience for document sharing between Apple devices only. You alone are responsible for the backup of your files, and which is carried out with an external drive properly size Time machine and, possibly, yet another external drive that you clone your boot drive too.

Time Machine backs up your documents in iCloud drive (if they were changed) with each hourly backup run. The condition is that the Mac must be signed in the iCloud and iCloud drive active. In addition, selected items in the category of Options iCloud drive will get photographed by Time Machine.

With paragraph 2 is met, Time Machine will search your local library: Documents Mobile folder. It is the active content of your iCloud drive.

Once iCloud drive is enabled in the Yosemite or later (on any device from Apple), devices iOS and Mac using the same Apple ID, but running older versions of Mac OS X will lose their documents in iCloud site. These documents will remain accessible on iCloud drive, but is no longer available on the old version of iCloud.

  • XPS 8910 additional HDD for backup

I installed a second HDD for backup purposes. When I press F2 to enter the program installation, everything, but the date and the time is grayed out and cannot be changed. I noticed that the readers are displayed as a RAID, AHCI no configuration. Can I change my safe RAID AHCI? I tried to make the change, but the warning was scary! What other steps can I take to allow me to activate the second disc? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

For some reason, the disk management works today! I was able to select the new disk, format it and assign a drive letter, and go from there. I have installed Acronis backup software and managed to create a backup and recovery boost for the startup disk. So what has changed? I have no idea. Before today, I couldn't select the new drive to do something with it. Maybe a Windows update which took place?

Be it - thanks to all of you who took the time to answer. It's that kind of support that make useful forums. Happy it all!

If you mean that you have to keep your Mac connected to a Time Capsule via Ethernet for future backups, then the answer is no. Time Machine and time Capsule are designed to work over wireless for your Mac would just need to be connected to the wireless network provided by the time Capsule.
