VM Ware ESXi 6 - Raid controllers?

Hi all here.

I'm pretty new to VM Ware ESXi I need to use this software house to build my own computer to test, so now I build my computer, the last thing I need is a raid controller it supports ESXi 6.0 can sombardy recommend one for me.

Requireing:

min. RAID5

6 x SATA 600 conneters

so cheap as posibule

I hope I can help here!

Hello

Please refer to controller RAID LSI - HBA equivalence mapping | ServeTheHome and ServeThe.Biz Forums and search for a provider (DELL, IBM, etc.) marked controller LSI.

2108/2208 chipset based ones should work fine with VMWare 6. Be sure to get one with a saved stack cache (BBU) or a flash saved to get decent performance.

Double check with VMWare HCL to ensure compatibility to the version 6: VMware Compatibility Guide: search system

Welcome to the VMware forums communities.   RAID (aka HostRaid or fake RAID) software such as controllers who that is located on your motherboard does not support drivers that come with ESXi.  The best ESXi will see are individual drives.

If you are looking for RAID, I'd say a used Dell Perc5 / 6 which are LSI-based RAID controllers. You will get the RAID support as well as the ability to see the health of the controller and disks in the vSphere client.

  • ESXi: SAS Raid 1 Boot w / SATA for backup?

    Situaltion:

    • There is currently no effective backup strategy.  Download that data over a slow WAN link can be used to restore or install timely.

    • 2 units of each SCSI 146 GB for $100 / month.  2 each 1 TB SATA disks for $100 / month, provider supplied NAS 300 GB for $150 / mo.  Seller provided iSCSI for 300 GB to $200 / month.

    • Cost per GB SCSI is not yet close to that of SATA.  Two 146 GB drives would be very marginal.

    • I intend to load balancing and cluster two sites on servers with something like CARP.  I am open to any suggestion using NAS and iSCSI.  The main things that matter are mysql used by http, http and email.  Sites are dynamic and use PHP which requires the session data.

    Mission:

    • Store copies of virtual machines, store ISO images, make backups of the operating system and perform backups of application server to provide access to the required software and backup and highspeed images.

    • Retain the ability to balance the load and 2 cluster sites.

I need your ideas to develop a good strategy.

    1. Yes.  You can assign to ESX directly and create a VMFS out of it, and then give that space for the virtual machine that you use for the backup.  You have to be careful and make sure that go you through the HCL (vmware.com/go/hcl) to get a SATA controller supported.  Not all controllers will work and be recognized by ESX.

2 Yeap.  You need not necesarilly CYGWIN for NFS, there are tools of $ M that can be loaded as well Windows services for unix, either will endeavour to provide an NFS server.  The downside is you need a windows license, but the customer is handy to have.  You can use a virtual linux machine, and even if you can't use the vi client, you can use the remote cli tools that are available for Linux.  Vima (VI Management Assistant) unit is a device based on linux with the remote cli installed, might want to take a look if you have not already.  You can use samba on it and be able to map a drive as your windows machines.

    3. Yes, absolutely.  If you have an NFS server, you can also use it as a data store NFS for the 2nd Server.

4 VCB is very convenient and it will allow you to skip creating a server and the export of the step of the vm, but you will still need to configure vcb proxy, which will need a windows server.

  • Virtual machine compatible with VM Ware with VM ware ESXi 6.0 enterprise (not sure version)

Hello, does anyone know if a company of VM Ware virtual machine (maybe it is version 5, not sure) is compatible with VM ware ESXi 6.0? Can I do a snapshot on the VM Ware company and copy it in VM Ware ESXi 6.0?

    Thank you!

Will VM probably run on ESXi 6 without modification. There may be a few exceptions where some minor modifications may be required however.

In any case, you can migrate the virtual machine with VMware Converter making a V2V conversion (2 virtual), export the virtual computer to an OVF on the former host and import it on the new, or - depending on your method of backup and application - use your last backup and restore it on the new host.

  • ESXi see raid 5

    Hello!!

I have a server esxi on a hp x 235. She saw by partiton two of bios Setup. RAID 1 (two disck) for the system to install esxi and raid 5 (4 discs) to install the virtual machine.

I installed my esxi and later, I checked only have a data store, and do not appear datastore2. Only appear the first and I don't know how I have to do to see this partition on my viclient.

I need to explain a bit.

    Excuse my expression.

What RAID controller do you use in the servers for the RAID-5?

Are you able to see the physical partition to RAID-5 at the start of the server?

The same controller works in the 2950 Dell R710 like?  How are the different cables?  Are batteries and cache different?

In general, the parts are designed to compliment the tech in the server, doesn't provide backward compatibility for older, less advanced hardware. The 2950 takes the PERC 5 / i, PERC 6 / i SAS 5/iR and SAS 6/IR. The R710 may take a PERC 6 / i and SAS 6/iR, but also uses the S300, H200 and H700 controllers.

    PERC 5 and 6 PERC use a SFF-8484 connector; the PERC H200 and H700 use a connector SFF-8087.

Batteries must be the same, but the cache size and type are different (PERC 5/6 have 256 MB; H700 has 512 MB and 1 024 MB).

  • ESXi server RAID

I'm looking to set up a computer with vmware esxi server with raid 5.  The advice I have is a intel dg33tl.  I was looking for a map of RAID controller supporting RAID 5.  What I read the PCIe x 1 has a transfer rate of 250 MB/s, which I suppose it will have to share with all the connected drives.  If I had to stay with the built-in SATA ports, then the data transfer rate would be about 300 MB/s per SATA port.

My system has a q6700 with 6 GB of RAM.

    My question:

It would be better to install a system to use the esx server and configure my system with RAID 5 with the on-board or should I get a RAID controller for the server esxi PCIe x 1 slot card and Setup.  I'm looking for better overall performance.

    Thank you in advance.

On the one hand, his stats are overrated.  For another you are talking BURST MAX @ 300 MB/s and a RAID card can give you sustained transfer to can a LOT higher than the SATA drives.  SATA is controlled by the CPU, RAID can discharge of the Board of Directors and RAID have cache, most of the SATA controllers are not.

Don't believe the hype.  SATA is good for archives and applications of single player, they CAN NOT measure in any RAID card.  Those are numbers not world real marketing.

    Hello-

You're not quite call things correctly.  There are 2 two different things you need to do:

    1. "point source" the .ps1 file in which the function is defined by doing something like: ".." c:\temp\functionDefinitionfilename.ps1 ".
    2. _then_, you must call the function name (not the name of the .ps1 file) and can pass parameters (such as "Get-VNVMHostLogicalVolumeInfo - VMHostName myvmhost0.dom.com"

To article 0, you _must_ include the period and the space before the name of the file in which the function is defined.  This action is what makes the "Get-VNVMHostLogicalVolumeInfo" function available in your PowerShell session.  It is the "supply point".

Then, for question 1, which is the function name, "Get-VNVMHostLogicalVolumeInfo", not the name of the definition of the function (the .ps1 file) file.  Until you do these two things, you will continue to get zero results.  You follow?

  • vSphere 5 ESXi host - RAID config best practice?

    Hi all

I'm pretty new to VMWare and wonder what's the best Setup for RAID

    I have a HP DL380 G7 with SAS 4 x 600 GB discs.

It is a simple server lab/DR, and I intend on creating a RAID-5 volume with no hostspare. Can I partition the RAID and put the ESX software on a small partition and use the other partition for the data store? If possible it is best practice?

I imagine there will be a performance by having the same RAID volume, making of the reads/writes on the ESX software and storage at the same time. Would I be better to throw some 72 GB in RAID 1 on the server so just for the ESX software and maybe to store some ISOs?

    Thank you!

    B

Don't worry ESXi. It works entirely in memory and only stores the configuration changes and logs on the HARD drive. I'd go with the RAID5 configuration that you mentioned.

On top of that J1mbo posted I would suggest that you start to learn about networks... You can get switches managed for not a lot of money (for the low port number) online (like on www.newegg.com)... Go will always be a good choice, sometimes need in fact (if you plan to use a SAN or iSCSI)...

I can confirm that you can use Dell Precision Workstation systems as ESX/ESXi hosts (up to version 4.1, the current version)... I use a T7400 (dual, Xeon E5405 powered) as my host with no problems... I have a SAN chassis on the way, I want to be put in place this week, so that I can move my VM off DAS... I use the Dell PERC 6 / i RAID controller now (hardware RAID) for four SAS disks... I will continue to use the two 15 k TPM for ESX/ESXi to lie. Don't know what I'll end up doing with the two SAS drives which are my data store. I have a HP ProCurve switch 2510 G-24 in place (all my gear compatible Go through who)... Host has 16 GB of RAM, allowing me to run eight VM 24 x 7 (a mixture of platforms and tasks)... The city of 8 GB of RAM will help you get started, but you will need to watch what you put on the host. You can quickly run out of resources (memory is usually the first resource to get used)...

I'd stick also Xeon to power any ESX/ESXi host server...

  • Install ESXi - Nvidia Raid

Yes I know its not technically support... However, I thought that maybe someone here could help me a bit with me being new to VMware and all.

I have a board with a XFX680i Controller Raid MCP61 mentioned in this discussion here: http://communities.VMware.com/thread/126404

In a RAID, he can see the individual SATA HDD (id: 037f) when I install it it makes be select on the road to the Bay. After selecting the installation progresses and restarts, then I get a Boot error (that's all it says) I don't know where to go with it at this point, any help is much appreciated.

The drivers that come with ESX (i) do not support RAID arrays software for controllers like the MCP controller you have.

  • Difficulty installing ESXi with RAID and Ethernet

I have a Promise FastTrak TX2300 RAID controller PCI card and a PCI Netgear 1 GB ethernet card. The RAID controller is configured with RAID 1 and has two identical disks connected. A logical drive is defined.

When I run the VMware ESX Server 3i 3.5.0 installer displays the two RAID drives as if there was no RAID. If I select one of the disks and continue with the installation, the installation program uses only this player and the second drive is intact.

Once installation is complete, the system will start and allow me to configure the ESX Server.

The configuration of the server sees any Netgear card.

How do we install ESXi to recognize the logical RAID drive both the Netgear ethernet adapter? The only Setup installation option that I could see was to press TAB before the loading of the installer. But that just showed two lines of giberish and I press any takes over the responsibility of the installer.

    Kevin

    (1) the promise is a "soft" raid card, which means linux and windows, that the pilot made the raid, ESX, so on, it will work, but each drive is independent.  There is no choice in addition to using a fully supported RAID card.

    (2) netgear probably isn't on the HCL, and therefore will not work.  Buy a card in the HCL...

  • MD3200 (SAS) Raid controllers and VLAN

I have a MD3200 (SAS) and the host running ESXi 5 U2. Is it possible to configure the VLAN tagging on the management ports of the MD3200 outside the standard IP gateway configuration and the subnet mask?

I don't see one either. Textbooks mention also the option to label the management ports.

Based on the absence of mention of this in the manual, I feel confident in saying that you can not use VLAN tagged on the management ports.
