ESXi, yoann data resides on a boot?

Hello

Anyone who has an overview of the data that resides on an ESXi 'cos' on a reboot?  It is possible that all the vm or LUN data stored?

  • ESXi and data on a single mailbox store

I'm eager to get ESXi running on my server at home for use in a test lab environment. Here are the specifications of the box:

    Card mother BIOSTAR TFORCE TF520-A2

    AMD Athlon 64 X 2 6400 +.

    Crucial Ballistix 4 GB

    Rosewill RC-218 SATA controller

4x2TB Samsung Spinpoint F3 Hard Drives (connected on the RC-218) software RAID5

250 GB Seagate Barracuda boot disk

Currently, the box is running Windows Server 2003. The RAID5 array has about 3 TB of data on it. If I understand correctly, ESXi cannot mount or use an NTFS volume (and mine is) as a data store for virtual machines unless it is via NFS. If it's wrong, please correct me. What are my options here? I like to keep all my stuff on a single box to reduce energy consumption. Is there a way I can somehow continue to use the RAID5 array in its current state and also be able to use it as a data store for the guest virtual machines in ESXi?

I have a few other boxes that I could use, but I'm trying to consolidate (isn't that the point of virtualization?) all in one physical box. An idea I had was the RAID5 array out of my server box and put in my game and then machine to mount as an NFS volume for use as the data store.

In addition, 250GB would probably suffice as a data store for my purposes. Is it possible that I could install a virtual machine running Windows Server 2003 and pass the RC-218 and RAID5 array directly? Or just make mountable in the virtual machine?

If you need more information please ask.

    Thank you

    Tony

What you could do is to install VMware Workstation on the box (although I haven't checked that it is running on Win2003 as well as desktop operating systems - read the card to http://pubs.vmware.com/ws8/wwhelp/wwhimpl/js/html/wwhelp.htm#href=welcome/welcome.html).  You can then use your local data store.

Your biggest problem is memory - with only 4 GB, you will probably be sharing MUCH in your family environment when you take into account your device vCenter or comments and 1 or 2 other guests.

  • Make an accerssible of other ESXi hosts data store

I have a data store on a 5.1 ESXi host I want to make them accessible via NFS or FTP so that other hosts can see its content, is it possible? What is the best way to do it?

    Morning,

  • After installing ESXi 5.1 computer does not boot any device

    Hello VMware Experts,

This certainly isn't my are of expertise as I work most of the time on the bet network but in any case here is my problem area, and I hope that some of you can help me with this.

So I bought a PC on Ebay hoping that I could define as an ESXi Server (here's the link:http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gateway-Intel-i5-3330-3GHz-8GB-1TB-Windows-8-Desktop-PC-DX4870-UB318-/321165075173?pt=Desktop_PCs & hash = item4ac6ee22e5 )

    )

So I downloaded ESXi 5.1 and begun to installed

First surprise, I had (it did not recognize my network card, I went to amazon and bought an Intel PCI Express NIC to get there)

After 2 weeks, I received it today.

Finally, I put the PCI network card in the motherboard and begin the installation.

Everything seems to be perfect, great when I had until I completed the installation... I smile and then saw the message Installation successful, remove the CD from the CD room and restart the server.

Right Awesooome! But then the problem occurred.

After that the unit is back from the restart process he did not recognize any boot image installed on the drive hard (hard disk already set from the BIOS as a startup option)

    An error message like:

does not recognize the bootable media

I tried re installation, overwriting without success. (Same behavior)

I know it's a very simple process, but what might happen here,

    Any ideas?

    Kind regards

    Jcarvaja

I have no idea why you install esxi on a metal bere machine but I assume you want for a lab at home.

Well from my experience, when I started to learn Vsphere 5.1 - I was installing windows 7 on a desktop computer - then bought Vmware Workstation - I installed 5 ESXI host on it and tested all the features (HA, DRS, FT, VMotion etc.).

I have a HDD i5 Desktop 2 t and 32 GB of Ram - but you could look for at least 8 GB of Ram it works perfectly.

Let me know if you need help setting up Esxi in workstation...

  • Submit any comments ESXi host data store

    Hi all

I installed ESXi on HP DL 380 G6 with HDD 6 total. I created the first 2HDD using Raid1 (138 GB total) and the rest 4HDD use Raid5 (total 800 GB size). When you have finished install ESXi, I can see the two storage under the ESXi data store. My question is how can I present the entire 800 GB disk for computer to newly created guest (Win2K8 R2)? When I add as the new drive of the guest computer, it only allowed me to create 200 + GB virtual disk of size only.

That will be great if anyone can suggest me and guide me.

    THX & Rgds,

    CoCo

    Welcome to the community,

When you create a data store, you can choose the size of block for her. The maximum size of the files to a virtual drive depends on the size of this block. For the limits of the size of the different blocks, see for example http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1012384. In your case, to create a ramdisk of 800 GB you must select a block size of at least 4 MB. The block size cannot be changed, so that you must delete and re-create the data store. ATTENTION: This will destroy all data on this data store!

  • Better use of disk space on the server esxi (for data store)

I have a HP Proliant DL380G6 which currently has 2 146 GB hard drives in a Raid0 configuration.  We quickly realize that this is not enough space for all of the virtual machine, we have running.

Is there a way of 'clean' to add disks to this server - by this I want to say one where we don't have to add readers, and then reconfigure the raid5 raid card, and reinstall...

And on a related issue (even if it may seem irrelevant):

Some of our virtual machines are currently on a mounted NFS datastore that I want to spend in the local data store.  One of them has quite a few clichés that take up a lot of space.  What is the CORRECT way to migrate the virtual machine to the other local datastore, get rid of all snapshots (maintenance of the VM in its current state)?

Believe it or not. . Just select Remove all.

You are here is not a cliché. . It's your current state and not be deleted unless you select "go to" (note the different icon)

(even if I understand your concern)

If you are really nervous and wants to prove it to yourself, just test it on a virtual machine with no snapshots (create a snapshot, add a file, delete the snapshots and see if the files still exists)

    On the Partition of scratch

During the phase of autoconfiguration, a scratch 4 GB VFAT partition is created if the partition is not present on another disk.

At the start of ESXi, the system tries to find a suited on a local disk partition to create a partition from scratch.

The zero score is not necessary. It is used to store the output of vm-support you need when you create a support group. If zero score is not present, vm-support output is stored in a virtual disk. This could cause problems in situations of insufficient memory, but is not critical.

For ESXi Installable, the partition is created during installation and is thus selected. VMware recommends leave unchanged.

  • What is the advantage of separating the ESXI OS of the data?

    Hello

I want to buy a server for my production.

do I have to configure the server with 2 disks mirrored for the BONES of ESXI and 3 disks in RAID 5 for data or can I just have all the drives in Raid 5 (the ESXI and data)?

    Thank you!

    Dothan.

No doubt put all disks in a single set to improve the performance of RAID. Once loaded, ESXi runs in memory and writes that the logs and configuration data. The disk space required for ESXi - including a 4 GB partition scratch - is ~ 5 GB. In ESXi 5.x versions, it was a good idea to place ESXi on a separate drive in order to reinstall the system, but with v5.x ESXi reformat the complete installation disk more.

Even if you want to keep separate data from the OS, you can always create a RAID unit with all disks and - using the RAID controller - create the logical volumes on this RAID (for example 10GB for ESXi) set.

  • ESXi SCSI 5 to "cannot get disk partition information.

Off I must first say that I have tried to follow the guides as much as I could find to solve this problem, but nothing has worked.

We have a server with a single 130 GB drive that ESXi 4.0 resides on and another disk SCSI 5 to that we wanted to use as a VMFS partitioned drive, with a big VMDK, who accesses our Server VM file.

ESXi installation went well, however, when we arrived to add the second drive as another data store, we got an error message: "error during the configuration of the host: could not get disk partition information. From there on, we tried several solution, manually formatting the drive with the tools of command line vmkfs, Re-partitioning for ext2 with GParted Live, erasing information from partition with dd, deleting all partitions, all without success.

We are posting our problem here as a last resort, I can confirm that vSphere displays the total capacity of the car, but not the partition information. It seems also a gap between the capacity of disk fdisk reports and esxcfg-scsidevs - l capacity.

Here are a few out of order, it was after the partitions have been deleted on 5 TB disk (the one that ends with "67"):

I had heard he had some problems with the help of 2 TB disks in ESXi, however I was not sure if it was directly relevant to this problem. I am open to using Raw Device Mappings, I think I've seen a few guides on the methods not supported for adding THAT RDM on a local drive - all advice on this would be welcome.

Currently, we hold a store of data from 5 to and VMDK join one of our virtual machines. I guess my question is: How can I get the 5 TB drive work in ESXi?

Hello and welcome to the forums.

ESX (i) can be used to the maximum 2 TB - 512 bytes to the size of the LUN.  It is documented in KB 3371739.  You can just cut up this 5 TB drive into partitions smaller than 2 TB - 512 bytes each.

    Good luck!
