ESXTop

Hello

I have ESXi 5.1 and I tried to solve the problem of storage performance using esxtop. I went to disk by pressing d and I noticed that there are no more resets/s field and ABRTS/s. If they are deprecated in ESXi 5.1? What is the replacement?

Thank you

Well, Yes, I suppose, the options you mentioned are part 3.1 and up to 3.5. 4.1, in my view, that the options are not available. However, you can get the dropouts or resets for a particular hba through the vsish node:

vsish EI to/storage/scsifw/adapters/vmhba1/stats

..

..

Task Mgmt:TaskMgmt statistics {}

Abort: 1

LUN virtual reset: 36

cancel the task: 0

LUN reset: 0

reset device: 0

the bus reset: 0

}

..

..

You can write a small shell script to display the setting above every 5 seconds

  • ESXTOP is empty after the capture?

    Hello people,

I run the following command to esxtop to capture data.

    ESXTOP d 10 - a-b - n 1800 > /tmp/esxtopiometeromni01_05112015.csv

I see that the growth of the file running (he looks one of winscp), but eventually I come back to it or when it is done shows 0 B and empty when I opened in excel.

I was wondering if someone else sees it?

    Thank you

The actual writing is only happen when the file is closed and after 1800 iteration data will write do not have enough space to write. That's why you are faced with the question.

I would suggest that you run the same command and copy the file in file/vmfs/volume/datastore/your name. CSV

    It will work try

  • Remote start esxtop mutiple hosts at the same time?

    Hello people,

I'm trying to figure out how to take this esxtop command:

    ESXTOP d 10 - a-b - n 6 > /tmp/cs242_esxtop1.csv

.. .and convert it for use with get-esxtop-Server esxhost1 and PowerCLI.

This perhaps is that I could call get-esxtop mutiple times in a script on multiple servers at the same time.

Check if anyone has suggestions or comments?

    Thank you

  • ESXTOP shows 100% cpu but vm is inactive

    Hello

I have a pc with quad core intel, installed with 5.5 ESXi.

I created a vm and installed centos 6.5 in.

When I check the performance using esxtop, I see that all the CPU cores are 100% (attached) When vm is powered. (high in vm shows all the cpu idle)

When I turned off the virtual machine, the host cpu to 2 per cent.

What can I do to reduce the cpu load?

    ARO

    Yoram

You have the following setting in the virtual machine configuration file:

    monitor_control.halt_desched = false

This indicates ESX does not to deschedule comments when it stops.  In other words, this parameter specifies that the client should use 100% of CPU.

If you want the computer virtual to give the CPU when it is inactive, you must remove this option.

  • ESXTOP rebuild fails with permission denied

Ran VM-Support - p d 300 - I have 5 w (output directory) order by exstop to output performance data. Unpacked the tar with tar-tzf (name of file) file, change to the new directory where the file was unzipped to, ran the. / reconstruct.sh order and received a permission denied error. I performed this task several times in the past. The brain cells are depleted and I google out. Would be recognizing all opinions. Thanks in advance!

Solved my problem. I deleted the original compressed file and run the command rebuild and he succeeded. Something about the presence of this original file esxtop did not.

  • ESXTOP and Resxtop commands (need help for - n)

    Hi all

I'm studying for my VCAP-DCA and I still can't understand what means the - n command and the way of working out the value. I know that it stands for "number of iterations. resxtop (or esxtop) collects and records statistics that many times and then exits. "according to the documentation, but I can't work, how to calculate the number. Any help would be greatly appreciated I'm really lost.

Example : I want to use esxtop to collect data for 2 minutes at intervals of 3 seconds and the output file

    I ran esxtop b d 3 n? > > test.csv

    -b is the batch mode

d - sets the time in seconds

but I do not know what to put in a - n

Another example: I want to use esxtop to collect data to the output file at 5-minute intervals for 12 hours

    I ran esxtop b d 300 n? > > test1.csv

is there a formula for n (time x 60) or something like

Thanks in advance for your comments

-n is just the number of iterations. That's all. If you want 1 million iterations and a delay of 5 then there will be 5 million capture of the values of the r/esxtop but - n is literally just the number of iterations

    Hey Ryan,

The best metric to look at is the % VMWAIT because it removes the IDLE time out the metric and gives a measure more accurete

    http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2012/07/17/why-is-wait-so-high/

It's hard to say, but it looks like your time VMWAIT is still high on some virtual machines as well.  What is some of your numbers higher on VMWAIT?

    I hope this has helped

  • kmoy data on too high esxtop

    Hello

I do a performance test for my application that is running on the virtual servers with oracle database.

I'm trying to see what is the storage overhead that is made because the fact that I am running on a virtual server.

I thought that checking the average kernel memory would be a good parameter to see it.

When I run esxtop that I get huge numbers on the kmoy/cmd parameter, even when I run for an hour, it is not reached a maximum.

I had 2 questions I would be happy if someone could help me with:

    1. is it possible that the data I see on esxtop is not ture? the numbers are too high (my appliction seems to work very well)

2 - is a good way to measure the charge made by the vmkernel? (in storage)

This is probably the reason for the high kmoy numvers:

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalID=2012288

When you use VAAI you can't really trust those numbers.

  • Historical data of esxtop?

IM somewhat familiar with esxtop... as a real-time Performance Analyzer. Is it possible to obtain historical data of esxtop or a real-time monitoring is only? I only need a few hours back, but a day would be ideal.

d is the delay in seconds - and n is the number of interactions.  So 4320 d 20 - n gives you 24 hours of data with a 20 second sampling interval.

  • How to get the full name (device disk) using esxtop?

    Hello

I am looking for storage settings using esxtop - pressing 'u' for drive.

As I use the iSCSI (open file server) device, I couldn't see the identifier of the full device. Can someone help me to get this.

I have attached the screenshot of esxtop for this...

    Device name.jpg

    Any idea? Thanks in advance.

In ESXTOP enter a capital 'L' and type a number to make the larger DEVICE field. Depending on the length of the name of the device - you might need to up to 40 characters to present the full name.

Entering the '?' in ESXTOP will give you the options you can set (this information is also there as well).

    Hello-

I have an ESXi5 4 nodes cluster is to have resource problems.  I bet that you haven't heard that before.  Many of the virtual machine have multiple processors.  When I run esxtop and examine the value of cstp % I see values like 5.33 at 20.00 on multiple systems of vcpu.  I see the vcpu unique value to 0.00.  For multiple systems of vcpu, what is the threshold I should use to determine if multiple processors are causing the problem?  The CSTP 5.33% too high or is this correct?  At what % CSTP I happen to give up the sytem to a few vcpus?

    Thanks in advance... erik

Yes, but it would not help since esxtop must be run as root. Only way to run it without beeing root is the approach of vMA and resxtop that I mentioned above.
