EXE by default association problem windows7

Not so smart brother somehow changed the association of all the executable files (.exe) for Windows Media Center, and the only program I can open is now Google Chrome.  How can I change the association to windows Explorer.  Moreover, not even a command promp opens.  The operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Frito182,

Thanks for posting on the Microsoft answers Forum.

In addition to what said Amrita, you can reset file associations.

Reset file associations should help with your problem.
Open the control panel (all items view) and click the default programs icon.
Click set your default programs .
In the left column, select the program (highlighted) a list that you want to change the associations is default for file.

To set all the Associations by default for the program-
NOTE: This will allow to associate the selected program by default used by Windows 7 to open all types of files and protocols it can open.

Click set this program as default.
Click the Save button to apply.

If please reply back and let us know if this helped with your question, because it can benefit other people with the same problem.

Sincerely,

Marilyn

    Hello

Earlier this week, my Vista 2010 needed a Security Update, and my family bought for good, our computer updated. We have also updated the new windows service pack for Vista.

Our computer had a few viruses that have been deleted, and that the error has been corrected.

But since the incident, the PC has struggled to open .exe files. If I open Mozilla Firefox, for example, it will ask me to specify the program to run it with. I can browse the OS and find the firefox.exe and open it with that, but it won't allow me to check the box "always use this option.

In addition, some programs do not work together, like Fallout 3. It simply not open, and the programs that run across it IE: Fallout Mod Manager say they can not get the permission of the file in the directory.

Is there a way I could help this?

You have been scammed. Vista Security 2010 is not a legitimate program. It is a rogue security program and is called Rogue because he pretended to be one of the good guys but is really bad. You need to call your credit card company immediately, stop fees and cancel the card. And now you have to clean your computer.

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-antivirus-Vista-2010

These can work for you, and all can be good. However, in many cases the computer will also infected with other horses of Trojan and protected by a rootkit. These machines are extremely difficult to clean. If your machine is one of these cases, either the interactive assistance to one of the specialty forums listed in the link below, OR take your machine to a professional on the local computer OR backup your data and do a clean install of Windows. It's your choice. I do not recommend using BigComputerStore/GeekSquad types of places.

  • Windows® XP file Association problems? Copyright 2003 - Doug Knox? his files work?

Windows® XP file Association problems? Copyright 2003 - Doug Knox? his files work?

It is wrong to go all that is your problem.

I have instructions to run the Doug Knox fix as a copy/paste of my notes, I'll never have to type it once again, which means that (at least for the EXE usual file association problem), I like to use, but we don't know what your question is.  In fact, the majority of the stuff I answer here is just a copy and paste, I have fixed some things so many times...

Here's what I have copy and paste about afflicted EXE file associations:

Looks like your Windows file associations have to dispose. This means that XP doesn't know what to do with files by looking at the file extension (.exe for executables)., .doc for MS documents, etc.

If you don't have it you, something done for you - most likely malware.

Go to this site WWW by Doug Knox:

    http://www.dougknox.com/

On the left, click on the Win XP fixes, file Association fixed and read the instructions at the top of the page.

Download the EXE File Association Fix on your desktop, unzip the file and apply it by following the instructions at the top of the page, then to restart and test.

Run the following scans for malware, and then fix any problems:

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware detection programs:

    Malwarebytes (MMFA): http://malwarebytes.org/
    SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/

They can be uninstalled later if you wish.

I recommend to uninstall the application from the--> utility Control Panel programs & features and then put it back. You can use the charm of the search and the type of programs & features. Click on the above icon to call the utility.

You can reinstall from the Recovery Manager.  Invoke the charm of the search and type in recovery and click the icon.

Find the Recovery Manager from the list of drivers and applications and put a checkmark in the box to the left and then click install in the lower right corner.
