Extension of a data store

Hello

I'm trying to expand my existing data store size. I have a HP Proliant DL370 G6 with a Smart Array P410i. I've added 4 additional disks and expanded the chart via HP Array Configuration Utility, so all readers are added at home and in vSphere 4.1 search it shows as having the ability 'new' to 1.9.

The problem is, when I go in vSphere under Configuration, storage, it shows "total capacity" 833 GB (original capacity when it was created). When I look under the box "Measuring device", it shows the ability of 'new' of 1.91 TB.  (see attached photo)

If I click on the button 'Increase' it starts the Wizard "Measurement device", but I get nothing that appears in my list and I can't hit next to continue the wizard. I assumed it would be where I can specify the new piece of storage, I added to enlarge the data store but nothing shows, so I'm at a loss. Any thoughts?

Thank you.

Welcome to the community,

increase the VMFS partition on the installation disc is not possible using the GUI. For a description, take a look at http://deinoscloud.wordpress.com/2010/05/03/how-to-increase-the-size-of-a-local-datastore-on-an-esxi4/

Warning: Make sure you only select the VMFS partition during this operation. In the example it is partition 2, but it could be the 3 with your installation partition!

Although it should work without problem, I highly recommend you backup the existing VM before doing this.

    Hello

    I extend my logic unit number and I have a new analysis on my ESX´s and I can see the new space, but when I try to add a measure (now I have still 4 degrees), West nothing available for the scope. How can it be posible?

    Thank you

    Hello

    Before going further, please do a good backup...

    Yes, I extend my LUN, then I rescan and can see the new size, but I can´t extend my data store to this space...

    That is right. You can't do that if you add a new partition to the first LUN. You can add a partition with fdisk. Once you add the partition, you can then see that partition and add it as a point and formatting in a VMFS.

    Just extending the LUN does not have as much as you cannot extend VMFS without using extensions with VI3. So using "fdisk" in the CLI to create a new partition using the free space. Once you have the partition of type "fb" you can then use vmkfstools to formatting in a VMFS, and then add it as a measure to the existing VMFS.

    If you are not comfortable with vmkfstools or fdisk. Then I would decline the logic unit number once more to its original size if you can remember it EXACTLY, then create a NEW LUN, and adds the new LUN as a measure. If you do not remember the old EXACT size then look at the ALTERNATE.

    ALTERNATIVELY, you can create a new unit number logic of appropriate size and SVMotion/migrate all content for the new LUN of the former then destroy the old ONE. It really is a much less intrusive method.

  • Help adding extensions to a VMFS data store

    Hello people,

    I am working on some automation for creation of data store and must be able to add extensions to a data store.  The initial creation of data store works well enough at this point, but I'm a little puzzled about how to add additional extensions.  In my example, I am using the navi cli to make the LUN UID off the coast of the Bay of EMC, then format it correctly for the canonical name the host for the creation of data store.

    I read a little about the extendvmfsdatastore here , but I am not able to separate the part "add the measure" of "questioning the existing data store and remove references to pass."  If someone has an extract whose orders must be performed and the text to pass to the .extendvmfsdatastore method, I'd be very happy.  I know measure in several data stores fall into disgrace with VMware, but I can't migrate 10TB data storage immediately.

    Thanks in advance!

  • Expansion of data store which is the best way?

    Hi all

    I want to help you on the extension of a data store. I have a HA cluster with three hosts (5.5 ESXi). the army actually share a single data store where all the virtual machines to run. the data store is created in a midsize V3700 storage ibm. the host is connected with the CF. But I want to extend the ability of the data store. I think that it is possible to do this in two ways:

    -creation of a new volume of the midsize IBM and by mapping it to all the host then developing the data store for the new LUN (extension) created.

    -expanding the existing volume of storage IBM midsize directely. While it is the ability to store data directely is increased.

    I need your help because this cluster runs mission critical VMs. Also, I read in VMware documentation that it is not recommended to use more than one number of logic unit by the store of data that each data store should be in a separate logical unit number.

    How would you propose?

    Can you do the manipulation without stopping the virtual machines?

    I'm not familiar with the storage system you use, but these storage systems are generally several controllers that can be owners of LUN presented to the hosts. With the help of only one data LUN/store you are actually 'wasting' performance, then you can consider to introduce a different unit number logic with the second controller of storage as the owner LUN and create a second data store for your virtual machines.

    Regarding resizing datasore. With ESXi 5.5 there is no more need to use extensions, i.e. to present another logic unit number and add it to the existing data store to increase its size. You can simply increase the LUN size up to 64 ~ to, rescan storage on your ESXi host adapters and then increase the size of the data store in the Properties window.

  • How to remove an extension of data store (while keeping the files)?

    Hello world

    I am looking for a way to move/delete an extension of my single data store. My data store consists of 2 extends from ~ 150 GB each. The data on this subject would be inserted in the Go ~ 150 remaining.

    Is this possible? If yes how? ESXi automatically rearrange the data to avoid losing data while dropping an extension?

    Thank you

    Robert

    It is not possible to remove a measure and keep the original data store.  You must move your data, delete the data store and then re-create.

  • Thin provisioning - limited extension of data store

    Hello, we are running VSphere and thin supply function is very useful because most servers have a small car footprint so we can get in a lot more servers on the storage available.

    However, given that the space is not allocated statically and some servers have increased over time it could lead to what they eventually consume space on the entire data store which essentially stops all machines on the data store as well.

    This should certainly be avoided and since we want to use the extra space for provisioning end data store is of course more affected, but is it possible to somehow apply a limit of growth when the data store is almost out of storage if the system does not lower because of any unexpected expansion?

    Indeed, it is better that an expansion server fails due to too little space instead of down all other servers on the data store so how this can be avoided iin way smoothful? Thank you!

    You can also add an event to the alarm that will be Storage vMotion virtual machine to a larger LUN if you have the license for him.

    Thank you!

    Hello
    You asked for instructions on how to readd a missing measure.
    Basically, it's pretty easy:
    in the VMFS to VMFS-based volume header section, you can assign extends it.
    Lets say that the basic volume is mpx.vmhba1:C0:T3:L0:1
    first of all extend is mpx.vmhba1:C0:T4:L0:1
    second extension is mpx.vmhba1:C0:T5:L0:1
    Then you will see this string in the VMFS header:
    vmhba1:3:0
    and a little later

    MPX.vmhba1:C0:T3:l0:1

    MPX.vmhba1:C0:T4:l0:1

    MPX.vmhba1:C0:T5:l0:1
    Just change the list of stretches.
    But: normally you can't change this section at all, and to add to the confusion, these values are stored in RAM is not trivial to change this value correctly.
    I highly recommend that instead of try it yourself and repeat all the mistakes I made while learning it - call me.
    I rather help you personally to give dangerous advice that will probably make things worse.

  • Expand the Local data store

    Hello

    I have an ESX 4.1 with only a data store local (RAID5) on virtual machines on a DELL Server

    I want to enlarge the data store, I don't have enough free space to create multiple virtual machines.

    To do:

    -Install a new hard drive (with vmware powered)

    -Add the new hardisk to Raid5 with DELL Open manage

    -wait finally extend raid 5

    -Power Off Vmware machines?  or continue started?

    -Develop with local Vshpere the data store vmware (what time must expand?)

    I want to know if I can do an extension with the new space unpartitioned on local existing datastore without losing my virtual machines? I have only the local data store with esxi when I develop the esxi continue to work?

    Can someone help me?

  • Data store Clusters does not

    I worked with one of the guys in another thread on get the script below works, but we used a work around on the section of the store of available data in a specific data store instead of a cluster data store.  While it will work on a functional level, it fills a particular DS extension and allow now the DTS select the implementation at deployment time.  Has anyone successfully supplied VMs in a cluster data store and may be able to give an overview on the excerpt below?

    $hshNewVMParams = @ {}

    Model = $strSourceTemplate

    Name = $strNewVMName

    # default pool of resources 'Resources', in order to put the desired cluster virtual machine

    ResourcePool = Get-Cluster $strSomeCluster | Get-ResourcePool-name 'resources '.

    Data store = "8000-10kSP1-LUN02.

    DiskStorageFormat = $strStorageFormat

    # Start the virtual machine

    Start-VM - VM $vmNewOne

    Update: after a few tries and a support call with VMware, I could get this to work with a few workaround solutions.

    1. the default action for a cluster of data (without specified DiskFormat) store, is to deploy the same format as the source.  I suspected this, but did not confirm until a few weeks ago.

    2. the VMware SDK engineer recommended running New - VM and specifying the format of disk, then Move-VM to have the DTS to implement its recommendations.

  • Change migrated VM, vmdk disk file name / reference data store

    Hi all

    I'm trying to migrate a large number of virtual machines between physical datacenters (using SAN as the migration of mirroring method).

    The problem I encountered is that the operating system and data vmdk is localized on different data for each virtual computer warehouses. When break us the mirror and enter the VMX to the new location, the VMX file is a reference to the old path to the VMDK files (ie: the old data store in the center of source data). Only the VMDK files located in the same folder as the VMX file appear correctly in the vSphere - other client appears with the size of '0 GB' - as vSphere can't find referenced vmdk files.

    I don't want to update the VMX files manually, of course that's why I'm here. :-) But I struggled to find a way to update the hard drive using PowerCLI vmdk file name.

    I have to resort to pure PowerShell and update the file vmx in this way?

    I read all the blogs on the updating of the vmx files - but they have all shown to day extension data "extraconfig". for example:

    http://blogs.VMware.com/vipowershell/2008/09/changing-VMX-fi.html

    This extraconfig does not include the lines in the VMX file that specify the vmdk file name. for example:

    scsi0:1.filename = ' / vmfs/volumes/abcdefgh-503544b2-e46c-d41234567890/myVmName/myVmName_1.vmdk '.

    Ideally, I would have liked to use the command set-hard drive - unfortunately this is actually trying to move the non-existent vmdk to the new data store that I specify - rather than just update the baseline data store.

    I hope someone here can tell me an effective solution - without having to read in the vmx files and edit them using PowerShell.

    Oh, and I wrote a script to print the list of VMDK files attached to each virtual machine (in the datacenter from source before you remove migrated VMs)- so I have my CSV entry ready for use with a viable solution.

    Any help much appreciated!

    Thank you

    FaTony

    If you have the list with the VMDK from the source, and you know how to translate those paths to the new location, you should be able to use the Remove-hard drive and the hard drive New cmdlets.

    Have you tried that?

  • Register VMS in vCenter inventory data store

    All of the scripts of the guru out there, Hi

    I am putting together a DR solution for our virtual machines, we currently use the IBM midsize V7000 with Remote Copy to replicate some data warehouses.

    Now I have done some extensive testing and found that, when you make a switch of PROD to the doctor there is a bit of a process to get the running virtual machine.

    1. I have to do a full sweep of the HBAs again. Under storage cards, you can see the assigned as mounted storage devices, however you should always access the storage and go the the Wizard "Add Storage" to readd the data store with the option volume resignaturing. So this part is not painful except it adds a different naming convention in the name of the data store, example a data store named prd_lun100 is named snap-5a18365a-prd_lun100 , so I have to rename the default data store.

    2. I have to go through data warehouses and add each virtual machine in the inventory which is very tedious, and the part very I need to automate.

    I tried that one line, I found here-> http://www.wooditwork.com/2011/08/11/adding-vmx-files-to-vcenter-inventory-with-powercli-gets-even-easier/

    New-VM-VMFilePath"[prd_lun100] SERVER01/SERVER01.vmx"-VMHost"VMHost01.local"

    If possible, I would like to expand on this point, in the following way:

    1 Add the warehouses of data with the correct naming convention, using the identifier for naa to the LUN or LUN ID # to automate, possibly pull this info to a CSV list.

    2. Add a lining above, but a VM list CSV, however add is a DRS rather ESXi Cluster host, if possible priority add virtual machines by a kind of Pavilion of groups in the CSV file.

    3. turn the VMs based on a priority.

    I would really really appreciate if someone can help with this, I know that probably a big ask, but scripting is not my forte and don't know where to start.

    This shouldn't be too difficult.

    Read file names from a CSV file and then checks each VMX file you will find if it is in the list.

    Something like that

    $targetVMX = Import-Csv C:\vmxnames.csv -UseCulture
    $Cluster = "LON_PROD1" $Datastores = "lonservers*" $VMFolder = "LondonAppServers" $ESXHost = Get-Cluster $Cluster | Get-VMHost | select -First 1 foreach($Datastore in Get-Datastore $Datastores) {
       # Set up Search for .VMX Files in Datastore
       $ds = Get-Datastore -Name $Datastore | %{Get-View $_.Id}
       $SearchSpec = New-Object VMware.Vim.HostDatastoreBrowserSearchSpec   $SearchSpec.matchpattern = "*.vmx"   $dsBrowser = Get-View $ds.browser   $DatastorePath = "[" + $ds.Summary.Name + "]"   # Find all .VMX file paths in Datastore, filtering out ones with .snapshot (Useful for NetApp NFS)
       $SearchResult = $dsBrowser.SearchDatastoreSubFolders($DatastorePath, $SearchSpec) | where {$_.FolderPath -notmatch ".snapshot"} | %{$_.FolderPath + ($_.File | select Path).Path}
       #Register all .vmx Files as VMs on the datastore
       foreach($VMXFile in $SearchResult) {
         if($targetVMX -contains $VMXFile){
          New-VM -VMFilePath $VMXFile -VMHost $ESXHost -Location $Folder -RunAsync    }
       }
    }
