Fake call claiming to stop my license

Today, I got a call from a strongly accented Asian man scam claiming to come from Windows.

He passed to ask something about illegal downloading or virus downloads after talking very quickly to call from, so I hung up knowing that it is a scam.

Then he rang back aggressively threatening to stop my windows license.

I hung up again repeatdly and he stopped ringing at the back.

I scanned my computer with avg to check that there are no viruses for him to shut down my computer with.

Is one of the precautions I have to do?

Hello

You were called randomly. This person/company knows nothing about illegal downloads or viruses on your computer.

Since you do not allow remote access, it there's nothing you need to do except ignore any additional calls or hang up immediately.

    original title: fake call?

Today, I got a call from someone claiming to be Windows Support, saying he was getting my computer error messages. I (stupidly) allowed remote access to my computer and I was told that there were a great many virus that needed to be removed or it would break. While he was trying to sell my software I bcan suspect and ended the call. Now, I am very worried that if it was a fake call, could he have installed something on my computer, or access personal information, and how do I know?

Pay attention to what Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP.
Already, you let the sammer with access remotely. Nothing else short of reinstalling Vista and change your account and the password will save your computer.
    Do it NOW.

  • I think I got several phony calls claiming that my computer is infected with spyware.

I think I got several phony calls claiming that my computer is infected with spyware. They said that they were connected with Windows, so I asked if they were Microsoft and they said that no Microsoft would not call me. Wouldn't be a darn good Microsoft. The guy was Indian or Pakistani and wouldn't give me a company name, no matter how many times I asked.

They said they received reports from my computer it has been infected. The last call I let them go through their process to prove to myself that my computer has been infected. They told me to go to the event viewer, logs of windows, applications and said there will be errors and warnings there.

It was proof that he was infected and that they wanted to give me their approval to scan my computer so their 'Microsoft engineers' can solve the problem with Windows tools. At this point, after 20 minutes, I denied their access to the computer and hung up that it had no proof that I was worried. One of our friends had the same call on fixing Windows sound, she had an Apple Mac, I would have liked to see their difficulty its version of Windows.

I have 3 questions for this and they are: -.

1 can. anyone if your computer is infected using the event viewer?

2 can they tell if she is infected when the computer has a firewall and is also behind a router with a firewall?

    3. I would be right in thinking that there is another form of the scam fake phone call?

    1. If possible, get the errors or warnings in the event viewer is quite common, but say you have a virus just based on that, it's simply stupid.

    2. they do what is called call cold. They call every phone # in the phone book and say "your computer is infected" even if you do not, Yes, it's a scam and yes they are stupid.

    3. Yes. The only way they would be able to tell if your computer has a virus would be if they had access to it, and if they have BEEN with microsoft, which is not, it would be a breach of privacy.

  • I've been doing a series of phone calls telling me that my license key for my Windows is about to expire. Is it a reality or just somone trying to rip me off?

Last week to 10 days, I received lots of calls from someone called PC Support (which sound as if they come from the India) telling me that they want to access my PC to show me the problems that are reported to them from my ISP about something and real operating system Windows on the license key is about to expire.

I suspect that it is a new scam to try to sell the product, anti-virus/malware any... but it got me wondering whether or not it is a real-world scenario.

Can someone me one way or another?

    Thank you.

  • Possible fake call by "Windows Service".

Last night I got a call - from the India, I think - supposed to come from a "Department of Windows Service' - note, not"Microsoft services - indicating a problem with my PC. Apparently my PC was originally 'Windows' a problem! The appellant, while refusing to actually identify the question, asked me to open my computer-click with the right button on the desktop and on the part of the indexing services Service request form and typing in something on Windows XP. My suspicions, already very high, don't have not been dispelled with the repeated refusal of the appellant to identify the problem. Not being is not too familiar with this part of the OS, I asked to speak to her supervisor - who was similarly evasive. He then asked me the age of my PC and when I answered "... what part? The CPU, GPU, HDD etc", it rang off the coast. There was no call back. The more I thought about, I was more concerned. If my PC was causing 'Windows' a problem (probably through my internet connection), why they have not contact my service provider? They could clearly get my IP address if it was at the origin of the difficulties. No, he reeked off a little bit. Has anyone else had this and I was just not to play with it? Moreover, if it was a fake call, what could they gain by pursuing this line of inquiry? I have studied this part of the OS on the web since then and still do not see their 'angle '! No view (s) anyone?

It is a very common scam that is going around.

  • Fake, scam calls claiming that my computer is infected

I had two phone calls this morning (first a hook), the number that came up on caller ID showed "00-1108' and '00-1305".  Guy with an Indian accent said he was phoning from Microsoft in California (I'm in South Africa), and that my computer has been infected.  He knew my full name and called my phone number he had called me on!  He wanted that I turn on my computer and go through a process.  I told her to take a walk and that he was a crook and that computer is perfect - what is.  How these people get hold of this personal info of one?  He got very aggressive when I told her I was does not turn on my computer because I knew that it was very good, and then I threw the phone down on him--Needless to say, he has not called back.

You have made the right choice, it's a scam.

    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/securitytipstalk/archive/2010/03/09/Don-t-fall-for-phony-phone-tech-support.aspx

How they stand to say its not generally possible info. Could be 'social engineering', but it could be something as simple as looking in a phone book.
