  I was unable to update Firefox since Version 17.0, each update attempt failed.   I wonder if somehow, security software is always blocking the installation. Consider temporarily uninstall if necessary security software. No doubt other .exe files run (or I doubt you could do a lot with the computer) and this isn't a problem with file associations have been corrupted.
