Firewall Windows Vista never displays notifications when a program is blocked

Firewall Windows won't display notifications when a program is blocked, even though I have this option turned on. I was never notified of the any of these events by the firewall, although there are many entries in the security event logs.

Does anyone know how to remedy to this please?

Thanks in advance :)

Hi Peteshaw,

1. have you installed security software which includes the firewall?

Method 1:

You can check if the Windows firewall notification settings me when Windows Firewall blocks a new program is activated.

a. open the Windows Firewall by clicking the Start button, click on the Control Panel, clicking Security, and then click Windows Firewall.

(b) in the left pane, click on allow a program through Windows Firewall.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

c. Select the checkbox next to Notify me when Windows Firewall blocks a new program is activated and then click OK.

For more information, you canrefer the following items:

Allow a program to communicate through Windows Firewall

Firewall: Frequently asked questions

Method 2:

You can also check if the UAC is enabled. If this is not the case, select the same and check.

Enable or disable the User Account Control

Hope this information is useful.

There doesn't seem to be a way to make the new monitor the primary monitor, as in something similar here. • Firewall Windows Vista automatically turns off

Ive moved my Norton Antivirus to a PC with Vista - whenever I turn on, the 'X' in the Windows Security Center Firewall displays so I turn to every time. IM assuming that it is a conflivt with Norton antivirus. Can I simply ignore - or should I do something?

    > Ive transferred my Norton Antivirus to a PC with Vista

If you have Norton Internet Security or Norton 360, it is best if you have disabled the Windows Firewall.
This is because these 2 Norton programs have their own firewall. 2 firewall running on the same machine will create conflicts. For the benefits of others looking for answers, please mark as answer suggestion if it solves your problem.

  • Installation for Windows Vista never ends.

I'm having the same problem, installation seems good then never complete.  Thanks for the link.  I have read and tried these steps, always the same result.  Contacted dell but I am out of warranty so they sista waant 139 to tell me how to fix.  any other suggestions before I open my wallet?

I ran Diagnostics and hardware controls ok.

    Hello
Thank you.  I tried the method of reference dell as well several other suggested in this forum, all would complement very well and then on first commissioning will hold to "install complete".
The reason for the reinstallation of the operating system was that I wanted to reformat and completely erase HARD drive in an effort to restore the computer to the original performance.  It is a machine to friends and after 3 1/2 years, he has so much rubbish on what it is most exploited properly.

Anyway, Yes, it was Dell F12 Diagnostics test.
I read in another thread in this forum that others have this same problem and was mitigated by changing the native ACHI SATA.  I was able to change the setting of the ATA (do not know the difference?) and reinstallation completed successfully.  Now the machine works fine and everything is reloaded.

Now my question is this; Fact is leaving the machine in ATA instead of DCIS in SATA?  I tried to change these settings back and the computer would not start.
    What is the difference?

Thanks again, appreciate the answers and assistance

  • Accidentally installed a clean Windows Vista 64-bit version when my computer is running 32-bit.

I wanted to do a clean install of my Windows Vista. I had my manufacturer installation cd but didn't know that they put two in the package. Thinking that they only gave me one and only good cd I just jumped it withou double check and guess what it was that bad. Now, nothing works as it is not installed the proper drivers. Help! Is there a way to fix this? I have the correct installation cd but my cd drive is not workingand I can't online. Is it possible to connect to another computer so that I can get online to download the drivers and then reinstall? Is there a way to get to my score? When I look at the recovery disk folder there is nothing in it. I'm not the most computer savy as you can guess very well but I take directions well.

Just a few troubleshooting steps to see if the drive is bad or if the DVD player is bad:

    1. If you have another DVD player available try to use this drive in your computer instead.

    2. If you have another computer available, try the disc of Windows 7 by using this computer and see if it can read the disc, or if the disc cannot be read and is bad.

    If the drive is bad:

To replace the installation discs for the manufacturer of the computer:

Contact the OEM computer manufacturer and ask them to send you an installation to your computer disk - they may charge a small fee. Contact information for the manufacturer of your computer can be found here:

  • Windows Vista does not work for all programs requiring administrator rights

I have Windows Vista Business SP1 on a Dell XPS laptop. He worked from 3-4 years. It seems that after a recent update (in the last week), I rebooted the laptop and after that Vista can not run programs that require administrator privileges. This includes most of the items in the Panel, the observer of events, computer management, elevated command prompt and so on.

After logging in, I get a notification of the task bar that says "Windows cannot connect to the customer service group policy."

When I try to any program requiring administrative privileges (for example, msconfig), I get an error "Windows cannot find C:\Windows\system32\msconfig.exe. Make sure you typed the name correctly and try again"

I restored the system (from safe mode) for a day where it seems to be ok, but the problem remains.

The sound in the system tray icon is a trademark of the Red Cross on it, but sounds work ok.

Analyses of virus through McAfee (all installed updates and latest virus definitions) showed no signs of the virus.

As already mentioned in the original post, System Restore does not resolve the problem. I got to the new vista installation to fix the problem. Some windows updates and reboot after applying the update seems to be the cause.

  • Updates to Windows Vista on 14/05/2010. Programs and missing files.

12 updates have been installed on 14/05/2010.  When my computer has been restarted appeared a new office and all the files and programs installed since arriving there out of the box are missing.  That's happened?

It was probably caused by something in one or more updates - I guess you are talking 14/04/2010 (today or early this morning for the night).  I've never heard of this problem before.

Try a system restore to a point in time BEFORE the problem started.  Here is the procedure: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-windows-vista-system-restore/.  Don't forget to check the box to show more than 5 days of restore points.  If the first attempt fails, then try an earlier point or two.  NOTE: You will need to re - install any software and updates that you have installed between now and the restore point, but you can use Windows Update for updates.

If this does not work (and it should hopefully), so chances are good that the problem was caused by one or more updates and even the system restore cannot fix the problem.  Even if it works, you may return if you reinstall updates (and some may be critical or at least important).  You need to talk with the experts of the update.

Please repost your question in the Windows Update Forum at: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/threads where the specialists of update will be more than happy to help you with your problem.  Don't forget to include in this post the exact version of Windows you are using (for example, 32-bit Vista Business SP2).  Also include the names and numbers KB 12 concerned updates (I know it's a lot of typing but knowing what updates are involved will help a lot to come up with a diagnosis of the problem and we hope a solution as well).

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck!

Internet Explorer protected mode is a feature that makes it more difficult for malware to be installed on your computer.

In addition to helping protect your computer from malicious software, protected mode allows you to install wanted ActiveX controls or modules when logged in as an administrator.

Protected mode is enabled by default in the Internet, intranet, Local and sensitive sites areas and an icon appears on the status bar to make you know it is running.
