  If possible, try a USB mouse for awhile. This way if the slider works, you can try reinstalling the drivers for the touchpad that could solve the problem. If the cursor does not work with an external mouse also then the problem could be hardware related.

  Sometimes to repeat the installation process of the keyboard all over again also helps.

  When you install Windows Vista on the 1720 Insp, you need to install the SATA drivers during installation. That's why your system stops at this point.
