If you get the open with window then chances are that there is nothing wrong with your rundll32. It is probably your file associations are confused. Click HERE. Download the zip file. Extract the files and save them to your desktop. Right-click on each file and choose merge. Confirm your choice to the command prompt. This should solve the problem.

  • After that the changing environment variables get various issues which cannot find %windir%\system32\rundll32.exe errors

After you sort a few UAC problems on the computer of a friend (see http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-security/a-domain-user-in-the-local-administrators-group/745fc28d-7573-4414-aa4e-657054fc62dd) we hit another problem.

After modification of the environment variables, it seems that windows loses some environment variables until a disconnection/connection is made. If you open a back command prompt and type the value, there are far fewer variables and things like %windir%\System32 disappeared. If you try to open the variable dialog environment again, you get a 'cannot find windir%\system32\rundll32.exe %. The same thing happens if you restart in safe mode. After a closed session/login, added environment variable are there, so they are saved, it just seems like it won't let windows none of them until a new logon.

One oddity is that the variable env pathext has different things in after things go wrong. He started as a

PATHEXT = .COM; EXE;. BEATS;. CMD;. VBS;. VBE;. JS;. JSE;. WSF;. WSH;. MSC. ; PY

and after adding a new use env variable and opening a new prompt back, together said

PATHEXT = .COM; EXE;. BEATS;. CMD;. VBS;. JS;. WS;. MSC

Is this a sign of a register messed up, that could have caused the original problem, or something else? Any ideas on how to diagnose this problem? Any help much appreciated. I have left this in the Security section, as it seems that it could be linked to the original problem, but am happy to move.

    Any help much appreciated.

I don't know what caused your problem, but your original path certainly seemed excessively long. There is a lot of overlap in it you need to remove - see below. In addition, having records of remote machines at the beginning of your path will cause the machine to slow down a lot. You should remove them.

If the operating system is Windows XP, try and run the steps mentioned in the link below,

  • Rundll32.exe missing, unable to reinstall open rundll32.exe or .exe files

Then I looked around and discovered I had a virus, XP Security, erased rundll32.exe when it was faded.  Now, I found another copy on my computer to ISO recovery that accompanies it (thank you, MSI), but it is useless, because I can't OPEN. EXE FILES.  I had internet explore to open internet Explorer by selecting in the menu open with that appears whenever I open a .exe file, and that worked for a few other programs (World of Warcraft, as well, mainly to test).

So, what should I do to open Rundll32.exe when my computer won't let me choose Rundll32.exe as a program to open Rundll32.exe with.  I select it in the open with menu by means of travel, and it does not appear in the list of programs that I can use, such as Internet Explorer and wow.

I wanted to talk to someone on the phone for 5 minutes to understand this point, but that costs 20% of this cost my computer ($50, im on a netbook).  Come on, $ 50?  really, microsoft?

Thank you for your response. Here's my problem. I'm on a laptop at the moment. My problem is with my desktop windows xp home edition. I can't access a Web site or make it appear an address bar imput your link. Whenever I click on internet explore or itunes or whatever it is that must be open to the top, I get the 'open with' box and it says: "choose the program you want to use to open this file. I tried to remove the rundll32.exe and go back in the folder.

When I go to the c\windows\system32\rundll32.exe folder and remove the file, I go back to the results of the research, and he returned in the results of research after a few seconds.

    Thanks again.

The goal is to not do not delete the rundll32 permanently, but replace it with a replacement valid. If your MAP replaces the file then it is useless to continue to delete.

That said, the best way to solve this problem is to use a flash (USB drive) drive or other removable media to download and run the file on the link I gave you. However, if you do not have access to removable media, you can try to manually reassociate the executables.

CTRL-ALT-DEL and open Task Manager.  Once there, click file, and then hold down the CTRL key and click New task (run).  This will open a command prompt window. On the command line type assoc.exe = exefile > press ENTER. You should receive a prompt action succeeded.

Looks like your shortcuts can have been so separated. On the command line type assoc.lnk = lnkfile > press ENTER.

Actually, even if you get executables run again - you can be (read as "will be") better off the coast of a new facility.  Wipe and install media with your product key and other serial numbers and installation for other products media you own and restore your last recognized reliable backup for your files.
