  As of this morning, I noticed that when I select some text on a page and bring up the context menu so that I can click on "search Google for []" it switches to the new tab with Google search, something that has never happened before and I do not wish to take place. I've not verified "when I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately" in the options and in fact, this problem does not occur with links, with the option of Google search. It is possible that this started three days ago when FF is automatically updated at 13.0, but I have not used the Google search option in the last days. Can someone tell me please how to fix this?

  Hey ellenelle, you can enter Subject: config in the address bar of firefox, confirm notification of information (where it appears), search for the preference named browser.search.context.loadInBackground & switch true by double-clicking it. that should bring back the old behavior...

• How can I remove icons Google Apps and Google search page AFTER 41 of Firefox Update Options?

  Before my recent upgrade to Firefox 41, while using Google search in the search bar, Google Apps and Options icons were not on the search page. After the upgrade to Firefox 41, two icons appear. How can I remove them?

  You can get Google results through two other sites, with an accent like the privacy. You can judge if you like better the layout:

  • https://Startpage.com/
  • https://search.disconnect.me/

  I do not use those regularly myself, so I don't know exactly what the differences would be.

• Options button on the standard google search page disappeared

  Firefox 12.0
  on the google search page, I had two buttons:
  SafeSearch on/off button
  Options (gear) button
  the last button still appears on the screen, but now is empty: the gear is not displayed. When ipush result are incompatible: in some screens (search results), I get 4 options to choose, in other screens nothin happens at all.

  I really don't like this, because FF seems to have become unstable on my machine.

  As a fix as I complete reinstalled FF, without change, the problem persisted.

  Hi madperson, thanks for the quick response. Indeed I cleaned all the cookies and cache, but in fact most websites like webmail seemed odd as well. To cut things short, I decided to reinstall an earlier version, which solved the problem. This isn't really a favorite firefox solution, but alas.

  I'm new to Mozilla Firefox, which seems more to a wall climbing of a learning curve. But I like it much better than the Google home page.

  • I use a Toshiba laptop and a Windows 7 system.
  • Mozilla Firefox start page has a Google search box in the middle of the page. The police in and around the box looks like a 4. Whatever it is, I can't see the words easily.
  • Click on the drop-down tools, click Options, click the content changed police 12 and clicked on OK. The police has not changed on the start page.
  • I went to the option advanced and not clicked the box to allow Web sites to use their own fonts, but that did not help at all.
  • Then, looked everywhere in the Google support site, but I couldn't find a solution.

  Perhaps using the word "police" in my research is my problem! I looked for a solution for well over an hour.

  Help, please! If things continue to go, I'm going to need an anti-depressant.

• How to restore Google as my default search without having to reset the Search Options every day?

  I see that other people have this very annoying problem. Whenever I restart my computer, Firefox become my default Google search Yahoo. It is irritating as hell and totally unnecessary.

  Please tell me, IN the LANGUAGE of the LAYMAN, why this happens and how to fix it.

  If this problem occurs only after you stop and start Windows back up again, it does not occur if you just quit Firefox and start Firefox back up again?

  Given that Firefox does not have its own settings of default search engine, the more likely culprits would be:

  (1) utility software like CCleaner which can be planned to serve the various data browser at startup. You use something like this? If you do, go into the settings and set it to not to touch any data of Firefox.

  (2) other software wishing to perform searches of Yahoo! with a special address which gives a bouncing effect to the Publisher of this software.

  To get an idea of who could be the culprit, you can copy the address in the address bar when viewing a Yahoo! results page and paste it into a response.

• suddenly I'm asking as a new tab and not google search - driving me crazy

  Ask the home page is driving me crazy. I want my google search customary as that which opens when I press on the new tab. I was everywhere on the internet to try to fix this. nothing works.

  Since there are different options/settings of the standard page in a new window or a new tab, could you confirm if you have one or two of these problems:

  • Ask if poster at the start, in a new window (Cmd + n), and when you click the Home button
  • Ask appears when you open a new tab in the same window (Cmd + t)

  For these two problems, the first thing to check is an unwanted extension. You can view, disable and often remove the extensions on page modules. Either:

  • CMD + SHIFT + a (Windows: Ctrl + Shift + a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or tools) > Add-ons

  In the left column, click Extensions. Then take a critical look at the extensions listed on the right side. If in doubt, disable or remove if possible. Remember that all extensions are optional, none come with Firefox.

  Often, a link will appear above at least an extension disabled to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links in the last step.

  Which allows you to regain control of your homepage and view the standard Firefox new tab page?

  If so, here are the details on how to restore your preferred homepage:

  • Startup, homepage, tabs and download settings
  • How to set the home page

  If you find that it works in your session (Cmd + n and give you good home page), but after leaving Firefox and commissioning once again you have bad home page, look for an optional settings file named user.js in your profile (personal settings folder) folder. Firefox uses the settings in this file at startup to override your preferences since the previous session. You can check and delete the file by following the steps in this article: How to fix preferences that will not save (there is a specific section on the user.js files).

  Display Google in a new tab page requires a different approach. From Firefox 41, the browser.newtab.url parameter is no longer used because it was constantly attacked by malware. Now, you need an add-on to change the new tab page.

  Here are a few options (I'm learning more all the time):

  • If you are already using the "Restorer of classic theme" or "Tab Mix Plus" extension: There is an option somewhere (!) in his dialogues of the parameters to select another page in the new tab.
  • If you want to use your new tab homepage: Try https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/new-tab-homepage/
  • If you want to set another page or a completely blank page: Try https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/new-tab-override/
  • If you want the cursor to move in a search box in the page: Try https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/custom-new-tab/

  Use only one of these methods at the same time, otherwise there may be conflicts and dysfunctions.

  After installing one of these extensions, you must use the Options page to set the new desired tab page (instead of use subject: config).

  Open the page modules using either:

  • CTRL + SHIFT + a (Mac: Cmd + shift + a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or tools) > Add-ons

  In the left column, click Extensions. Then on the side right, find the new tab replace or custom new tab and click on the Options button. (See first screenshot attached).

  New tab Override

  Depending on the size of your screen, you may need to scroll down to enter the address in the form. (See second screenshot attached). For example:

  • (Default) page thumbnails = > subject: newtab
  • Blank tab = > subject: empty
  • Built-in Firefox homepage = > topic: welcome
  • Any other page = > full URL of the page

  Then tab or click this form field and you can test using Ctrl + t.

  Custom new tab

  It is easy to enter your favourite homepage address. If you check either of the boxes, the expansion will set the focus in the page as well, for example, the cursor will be in the Google search box. (See third screenshot attached). I had to leave Firefox and start it up again before new custom tab started working, but this may have been due to tests so many extensions back to back.

  Hi, 41 of Firefox, you must use the add-on tab override (browser.newtab.url replacement), to make changes to the page tab.

  Once installed, open the Add-ons (Ctrl + Shift + A) Manager > Extensions, and then look for the new tab override and click Options to set your preference.

  Notice, if you want only the new tab to be the same as your home page, you can use the Add on new tab homepage instead.

  You will then need to restart Firefox for all changes to take effect.

• Somehow my search engine has been changed to yahoo from google, and now I can't get google search to stay as search engine, how can I solve this?

  I don't know how it happened, but can not get google search to stay as my search engine. I use the version the most recent Firefox is here. I deleted all the other search engines, but it always goes back to yahoo. Not like yahoo, I want my back lol, google. Please tell me how to solve this problem, thank you.

  Unwanted modules can take control of your settings in Firefox (search engine, home page, the new tab page) and make it impossible for you to fight them. Here's my method of tracking down and cleaning of the bad modules, the air pirates and injectors ad. I know it seems long, but it's not so bad.

  (1) open the Control Panel, uninstall a program. After the loading of the list, click on the column heading "installed on" to group infections, I mean additions by date. This can help the undisclosed items bundle smoker who snuck out with some software, you have agreed to install. Beware of everything that you don't recognize / remember, since malware often uses sounding names important or innocent to discourage you remove. Out as much garbage as possible here.

  (2) open Firefox page modules using either:

  • CTRL + SHIFT + a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or tools) > Add-ons
  • in the Windows "Run" dialog box, type or paste
    firefox.exe "about:addons"

  In the left column, click on Plugins. Set essential and unrecognized plugins 'never enable '.

  In the left column, click Extensions. Then, in case of doubt, disable (or delete, if possible) not recognized and unwanted extensions. Do not forget that all extensions are optional, none come with Firefox, and you can learn more about them by checking their reviews on the site of the Add - ons.

  Often, a link will appear above at least an extension disabled to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links in the last step.

  Any improvement?

  (3) you can search the rest of problems with scanning/cleaning tools listed in our technical support article: Troubleshooting Firefox problems caused by malware. These scanners on request are free and take a long time to run. If they end quickly, especially if they require the payment you have a serious infection. I suggest the specialty forums listed in the article in this case.

• Google search error

  Over the last few days several whenever I try to use yahoo or google search engine, I get a message "this connection is untrusted". I tried refreshing firefox and it does not matter it still does the same thing. I have attached a screenshot showing this. I have Firefox 39.0.3. Can someone help me please? I'm not computer savy so please try to keep it simple.

  I did have to go through all these steps listed in this article, but the certificate was saved and then I went to the options of FF and makes google the search engine and everything works. Thanks a bunch for the help and I will favorite cela in case it happens again.

  the search box (with a magnifying glass to the left of it) is completely insensitive and there is no search option in the options of the menus/screens. Assistance from the address field in the search bar appears only intermittently to perform an Internet search for key words. a solution would be greatly appreciated.

  You can check if you have the XML files including Google's default search engine in the browser\searchplugins file in the Firefox program folder.

  If this isn't the case, then you need to reinstall Firefox.

  Try to delete the file search.json and possible search - metadata.json and search.sqlite files in the profile folder of Firefox to reset the default search engines.

  You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder currently in use:

  • Help > troubleshooting information > profile directory: see file (Linux: open the directory;) Mac: View in the Finder)

  Firefox will rebuild the file search.json from the default search engines in the folder "browser\searchplugins" in the Firefox program folder and the searchplugins folder in the Firefox profile folder.

• Web/country drop-down absent from Google-search tools

  After update to 35.01 and now 36.0, the Google search results page now behaves differently between Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. The problem is that the 'search tools' used on ALWAYS display the web/countries of choice (drop-down) filter, but now shows only 2 options, in other words any when and the results all filter. Chrome still constantly, shows the four options (web/country, any time, all-results, local-map).

  After reading several articles on this subject and likely checking options everything: config, I found that the ONLY way I could get this return to the 'normal' was to replace the "browser.newtab.url" parameter as follows:
  Browser.newtab.URL; https://www.Google.com.au

  NOTE: I have NO problem or blockage to change my home page (it is set to www.google.com.au) and do NOT have malware, or the snap Trovi/SearchProtect/Conduit.

  It can still occasionally be missed options, but it is now 90%. It would be good to get a permanent and adequate solution for this. If someone has a better method of rbust more, please let me know. TD

  Hi jscher2000, which search engine plugin on the site MYCROFT was very useful thank you. I used Google to THE ones that I was not interested and the Google UK has added to the search list by default, unchecked too (that we are originally from the UK) and sometimes need for research based in the United Kingdom).

  This now seems to be more like the original search feature, so thanks a lot for that, and I learned a few more things about cookies too!

  I tried to delete all cookies on previous attempts to solve this, but nothing seemed to work until I changed the config and used your suggested change search plugin. It is ordered that the search provider list can be moved upwards and downwards for sorting how you want, in my case all the Google those upstairs.

  From 34 of Firefox, you can use one of these methods to change you default search engine:
  
  Note: The following may not apply to localized versions of Firefox.

  • Click the menu button

    

    Select the Options under Windows or Preferences on Mac or Linux, and the parameters of Search Panel.

  • Click on the magnifying glass icon in the search bar, then click on change settings for search, as shown here:

  

  In the search settings panel that opens, select a different search provider menu drop-down (see the screenshot).

  This happens only in Google or you have noticed other web pages? Most of these issues could be due to some changes in configuration or plugins.

  Try Firefox Safe mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily disables hardware acceleration, restores some settings and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

  If Firefox is open, you can restart Firefox Safe mode in the Help menu:

  • In Firefox 29,0 and above, click on the menu button

    

    click Help

    

    then select restart with disabled modules.

  If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Mode safe mode as follows:

  • On Mac: Hold the option key during the startup of Firefox.

  When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "start mode safe."

  

  If the problem is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps described in the section Troubleshooting extensions, themes and problems of hardware acceleration to resolve common Firefox problems to find the cause.

  To exit safe mode of Firefox, exit Firefox (not just close the window) and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
