Grouping of VMS in vCOps 5.7

vCOps has added the ability to group virtual machines in the most recent versions.  However, it seems that there are still some limitations.  In the custom user interface, I can combine VMs in a resource tag.  However, there is no ability to collect measurements on a label of the resource as a whole.  If I want to get the total use of the processor for example, I can't report total CPU on a label of the resource utilization.  If that is my goal, I have to use a 'group' that is created only in the UI (Advanced) vSphere.  For example if VM1 uses 1 GHz, VM2 uses 2 GHz, 3 VM uses 1 GHz and VM4 uses 2 GHz, they're using total 6 GHz.  VMS are in vCenter servers so I have to customize my opinion of them beyond that offers UI (Advanced) vSphere.   I can put them all in a 'group' in the user interface of vSphere and when I look in the UI custom, I can report and get this single digit of 6 GHz at a given point.  However, I use a group in the user interface of vSphere to do.  (Fix this if it's wrong)

(

Groups have been added in version 5.6, which was published in November last (a year ago).

Groups are created and managed through the advanced INTERFACE. The groups are resources. Measures are collected only for resources. If resources are deleted, the corresponding measures are removed. Without resources, you have no metric.

Set custom tags are not resources - they are constructs simply organizational. Thus, custom defined Tags have no parameters. Think of it as a 'Tag', as its name suggests.

  • groups of vCOps and historical data

    I create a group in the vSphere vCOps UI containing a number of virtual machines.

    Once I created the group, I can start to see the metrics from the group.

    However, it seems that when I view the settings for the group in the custom user interface, it is impossible to get all values from before the time that the Group has been created.

    For example, I create the Group on Feb. 1.  Virtual machines have given individual and metrics for them individually since their creation a months ago on January 1.

    However, when I create the group, it seems that vCOps fails to extract data before 1 February.

    For example, I want to get application CPU MHz for the whole group of virtual machines.  Even if the data to calculate the Group exist if vCOps was to review the historical data of the individual VM, vCOps shows only data at the point when the Group was created and not before.

    Is that a correct understanding of the limitation of the groups regarding the preparation of reports on historical data?

    What you describe is how all the resources in vCOps behave with respect to the collection of data (these attributes or supermetrics). Metrics will begin to collect according to the assigned package attributes/supermetrics once the resource is created. Historical data prior to this existing/recovery resource is not available.

    So I would call not this specific behavior of "groups" because that is how all resources behave with respect to the collection of data.

  • How to convert heat maps vCOPS to vROPS?

    Hi all

    I want to convert the following heatmap from vCOPS to vROPS:

    For each data store, virtual machines currently have the use of I/O and higher latency?

    It seems that this one is missing from vROPS. I created the following new heatmap:

    It seems to work, but the heatmap appears only when I select the vCenter, a data center, a cluster, a host or a virtual machine. But not when I select a data store. It's kind of counterintuitive, in vCOPS you option case more small, which no longer exists in vROPS.

    Is it possible to create a heatmap, which works like the old vCOPS one?

    Kind regards

    jengl

    This configuration is not something I would recommend. You have a child object defined as the... for example data store group used for grouping of VMs. VMs can reside on several data stores, so that you would end up with a display laminated with logic that cannot succeed (you can't logically box a virtual machine inside two containers of data at the same time store) ", you might get multiple representations of the same VM). I suggest to use something that you can actually combine a virtual machine as reliable as anything beyond the virtual machine (host, cluster, file, etc.). Outer grouping is "Group By", internal grouping is "then by". Smaller box will still be the selected object type, unless your doing instances.

  • vCOPs Hardware Version of VM?

    Hi all

    My VMs for vCOPs are the Hardware Version 7, even though when I added first v5.6 some time previously, can make an update of the virtual equipment on these to version 10 of material (that I just made my v5.5 and upgraded vCOPs 5.8.0)

    Thank you.

    I recommend you not to do. They should be upgraded with the PAK file that provides VMware. If it's just to stay up to date and you have no other reason, I'd suggest either.

  • Determine the validity of waste VM

    I have a group of VMs who have a very heavy load once a day for 2 hours.  For the rest of the day, they are completely inactive.  During the time that they run, they use a lot of cpu and RAM.  As a result, they have enough RAM to run their workload of 2 hours, even if the rest of the day, it is not used.

    vCOps reports that group of VMS as part of the RAM and vCPU wastes and could be reduced at least vcPU and less RAM. I have one of the following two issues:

    1. the virtual machines never use all the RAM and vCPUs they are provided with even during the peak period.

    2. the use of virtual machines the vCPUs and RAM they are given but only during the peak period.

    How can I be sure that if the 'waste' on those virtual machines really are rubbish, or if it's just a reflection of the fact that these virtual machines sit slow down 22 hours a day?

    Thank you!

    It depends on the policy settings-

    If you are on the policy of 'default', most probably, that is the problem.

    Go to configuration and check what are the related parameters;

    Maybe it's interesting to put these virtual machines in a separate group with better parameters suitable for this specific behavior

  • That means PUSH_DEFERRED_RPC and NESTED in DBMS_MVIEW means. REFRESH the procedure?

    I am trying to learn excatly what is them parameters PUSH_DEFERRED_RPC and NESTED means. The following source written in documents. Can someone give a simple example.

    push_deferred_rpcUsed by the editable materialized views only. Set this parameter to true if you want to send the changes to the materialized view its associated master tables or master materialized views before refreshing the materialized view. Otherwise, these changes may appear temporarily lost.
    nestedIf true, then perform update nested for the definition of the materialized views. Nested refresh operations refresh all the function of materialized views and the definition of views materialized, based on a dependency to ensure the nested materialized views are truly fresh with respect to the underlying base tables.

    Thank you.

    This probably belongs in the forum of replication, but I'll answer it here.

    PUSH_DEFERRED_RPC is part of the two-way replication. You can do a materialized view can be changed, and have updates sent to the master table, in which case PUSH_DEFERRED_RPC will cause changes to the MV to be returned to the main table before the update is performed. If your MV is not editable, this setting has no effect.

    NESTED is used when you have a group of VMS who depend on each other. For example, MV1 is derived from MV2, which is derived from MV3. If you specify NESTED, then MV3 will be updated in the first place, followed by MV2 and MV1. If you don't specify a NESTED, that might not happen. If you're not refreshing nested MVs, this setting has no effect, but if you don't have a nested MVs, you must set this.

  • Average use of memory

    How can I get the use of the average memory of a group of virtual machines?  I have a current report that uses get - vm to create a group of objects of virtual machine.  I would like to integrate a custom property that goes and gets the average memory of this group of VMS usage and adds it as a custom property.  I would like to use Get-stat but I'm at the level of statistics 1 so I can only use what is available there.

    Get-vm-place somecluster1, anothercluster2 | Select name, memorygb, numcpu, aMillionOtherProperties,

    @{N = "AverageRAMUsage"; E = {ABrilliantget-statSnippet}}

    Ideas?

    Thank you!

    When you want to obtain this use?

    In all cases, you could do something like that, don't forget to adapt the content of the variable $start

    $clusterName = "mycluster.

    $start = (get-Date). AddHours(-1)

    $stat = "mem.usage.average".

    $vms = get-VM-location (Get-Cluster-name $clusterName)

    Get-Stat - $vms - Stat $stat entity - start $start - ErrorAction SilentlyContinue |

    Group-object - property {$_.} Enity.Name} |

    Select Name,

    @{N = "MemoryGB"; E={$_. Group [0]. Entity.MemoryGB}},

    @{N = "NumCpu"; E={$_. Group [0]. Entity.NumCpu}},

    @{N = "AverageRAMUsage"; E = {}

    [math]: Round (($_.)) Group [0] | Measure-object-property - average value. Select average - ExpandProperty), 2)

  • Emailing reports on performance in 6.0

    Hey all,.

    I received a request to send reports to tell a group of VMs for the CPU usage and memory to say that last 30 days on a weekly report.  How

    I would accomplish this?

    This should be simple enough, but there are quite a few steps.

    Create a custom group:

    If the Group of virtual machines are not all in the same cluster and easy to report, you can create a custom group and make sure that the virtual machines are all in this group.

    Start by browsing to an overview of the environment. You should see a screen similar to the image below:

    Click the Green plus sign to create a new group:

    Please fill out the sections that I pointed out. It doesn't have to be exactly the same as what I did. As the 'Group Type' can be changed to anything you want, you can also choose custom policies that you have never defined. Make sure that you select the Type of object as a Virtual Machine, and you can add criteria that you want to add. In this example, I am now simple and just add specific objects, while the group will not dynamically updated.

    Then expand the "objects to always include" using the double arrows at the bottom right. Be sure to select "All items" in the drop down menu under 'Filtered objects' on the left side (default for the custom groups). Then simply browse to your objects, in this case vCenter adapter-> virtual-> select the checkboxes for each virtual machine that you want to. Finally, click the 'Add' button to move them into the group.

    You can also develop 'objects to always exclude' but once again since we keep it simple and do a static group I'm not going to get into that. But it's essentially the same concept as what we just talked.

    Now you have a custom group. Then, we create a view to feed our report.

    Create a custom view:

    Go to Home-> content in-> views. You should see a screen like this:

    Click the Green plus sign to create a new view. Give it a name and a description. Then click on "Presentation".

    Choose the type of presentation you want to present. I put a list for this demonstration. Then select "subjects."

    For the subjects that you want to be sure to select 'Virtual Machine' as the subject. We must not add at this point. Then select "Data".

    Now you must take your steps on the left side and drag - move to the right. I would also change the label to something more readable as who will appear in the column headers for your report. I forgot to change the "Transformation" on this image, but you can select average, Maximum, etc. for each indicator according to your needs. It is default to the 'last' which is the last value declared for each measure. Then click on 'Visibility' to choose where this point of view will be seen/used.

    I'm simply check the box for 'Reports', but you can use this view to dashboards as well. Click on save and you're done.

    Now that we have the view that we need to add it to a report. Fortunately, this is the easiest part of the whole process.

    Create a custom report:

    Go to Home-> content in-> reports. You should see a screen like this:

    Click the Green plus sign to create a custom report. Give it a name, a description and click on "views".

    Filter on the name of your view by typing it in the search box. Then drag your opinion on the right pane. Click on "format".

    I usually just keep the PDF and CSV checked because you never know when you will use either. Click on "Layout Options '.

    Now you can add a cover page, table of contents, and footer. I generally do not include these but if you want to have a custom brand report you would simply upload a picture here so that he looks at all the fancy. Click 'Save' and you're done with your report.

    Finally, we just need to schedule the report.

    Planning a report:

    Go to home page-> overview of the environment. Note that when "Custom groups" is selected your custom group poster upward. Click on your custom in the main pane group.

    Now that your custom group is selected, click the 'Reports' tab on the right side of the page. Type the name of your custom report to filter the others. Then click on the "Calendar" link to create a schedule for your report. Then click on the Green plus sign in the window that opens (not shown).

    Choose how often you would like your report to be generated. And at the bottom if you have set up email for your instance of vROPs already (I have not because I'm lazy), you can click on the "Email report" box and enter the email addresses of those you wish to receive your scheduled report.

    Well, it turned out be a lot more time than I expected. But if you have any questions do not hesitate to ask, and I will be more late to answer.

    See you soon,.

  • ESXi HA and SQL Failover Clustering - resolved

    Dears

    My current environment is

    3 5.5 Esxi with active HA hosts

    Requirement;

    I prepared 2 R2 2012 Windows of the virtual machine and I need to build a node two SQL cluster on them. (with WFCS) and I was reading the article for taking in charge option and discovered I need activation were of affinity

    VMware KB: Microsoft Clustering on VMware vSphere: guidelines for supported configurations

    I got confused and lost on how to enable these options on HA only clusters.

    grateful if someone could share their experience in this regard,

    DRS requires vSphere Enterprise license. This is the reason why it does not show these options in your environment. vSPhere HA requires vSphere Standard edition. As you have the standard version, you are able to configure HA.

    There is NO as such impact.

    1. you use MSCS as a cluster of virtual machines & if anything happens to the clustering configured application, MSCS are switched to another VM in the MSCS cluster.  (I'm assuming you use IPC config. Cluster in a box)

    2 vSphere HA allows you to give an extra level of HA at the host/VM level. As you use your virtual machines to the MSCS cluster on top of guests. vSPhere HA is additional HA.

    3. in the case, host fails, vSphere HA are toggled MSCS grouped all VMs to other available inside the HA cluster host vSphere. That is to say it will restart all virtual machines on the other host. Please note that the restart of a virtual computer will have minimal downtime. In this case, as all virtual machines are on the same host, same MSCS cluster will have same downtime as vSphere THAT HA will have. But if you use CAB (Cluster in the box) as MSCS configuration, you can minimize interruptions of service MSCS VMs.

    4. in the case, VM itself fails (no host), vSphere HA will restart the VM has failed on the same host. In this case MSCS are switched all your app on the other virtual machines in the MSCS cluster.

    You have only vSPhere HA without Drs It should be good. Just as DRS gives you more flexibility.

    Please note that in any HA solution, in case of failure, you will come across with minimal downtime (time may differ across different solution HA).

  • VM Variable for the virtual computer object

    Hello

    I am connected to multiple vcenters where we have a few VM objects that have the same name (no duplicates in the vcenter even).

    and I need to run a vm - get when you are connected to the 2 vcenters and store that in a variable $vms

    It is always the case for virtual machines with the same name that if a virtual machine is running in a vcenter, it is turned off in the other vcenter. (DR)

    for virtual machines in this case, I need my variable to store the computer object virtual that is powered AND ignores the engine off... for other virtual machines, I need to power on and power off power vms to be included.

    Here's what I do, but it doesn't work

    $vms = (get - vm |) {ForEach-Object

    If ($_.name - eq $null) {}

    $_ = ($_ |  (Where-Object {$_.powerstate-eq "réceptrices"})} else {$_}

    })

    Hello, max2001-

    How about something like the following:

    ## get all VMs from all connect vCenters, and group them by name$arrAllVMs_grouped = Get-VM | Group-Object Name

    $arrDesiredVMs = @()## for any group of VMs where there is more than one (2, presumably), only return the PoweredOn VM in the group$arrDesiredVMs = $arrAllVMs_grouped | ?{$_.Count -gt 1} | %{$_.Group | ?{$_.PowerState -eq "PoweredOn"}}## and for the groups of VMs where there is only one VM in the group, add that VM to the DesiredVMs array$arrDesiredVMs += $arrAllVMs_grouped | ?{$_.Count -eq 1} | %{$_.Group}

    Who will be:

    1. get all virtual machines and group by name
    2. groups of virtual machines where there is more than one, just take those who are in the PowerState PoweredOn
    3. and, grab all the VMS are groups of count 1 (named unique VMs), without regard to their PowerState

    What to do for you?

  • Consolidation of virtual machines to a custom policy

    I have a group of VMs that currently do not reside in the same folder, but are identified by a naming only through multiple vcenters scheme.  * acmevms *.

    I can't combine them into the same folders. In vSphere UI-> Configuration-> manage strategies, how can I better apply a strategy custom for them?  I don't want to have to manually select the 400 VMS and add them to the group...

    Thank you!

    Create a custom group. Is he filled dynamically. Add virtual machines by criteria name contains acmevms. This will dynamically fill all virtual machines with this generic term.

  • Download all dependencies.

    Hello!

    What is a way to download all the dependencies of VIM? Or to create dependencies between group of virtual machines?

    We have more than 1 k VMs without any documentation (I don't know how in this case), fortunately they divaided of files inside a folder of vSphere is a virtualized system (System is a group of VMS) and we want to know how different systems interact with each other.

    Hi Dimitri.

    I am equal, a WINE QE team member.

    IMHO there is no way to export a virtual computer via the WINE user interface dependencies.

    The only way is to display the dependencies of a virtual machine in a more direct way is via the "view of the Table.

    Thank you

  • Question on vNetworking and VLAN...

    Our server ESXi hosts and vCenter are version 5.1.  We add a few new servers which will be on our 10GB network.  Our guests up to this point have been on 1 GB.  We do not use the distributed switch.

    How is it important that separate us the Traffic Management and vMotion VM on VLANS separated when using 10 GB network?  We will have management, vMotion and groups of VMS ports on separate vSwitches.  We have our servers on the 1 GB using the VLANS separated but I wonder why is this necessary if you use the 10GB network.

    Really it shouldn't make a difference if you have 1 GB or 10 GB - the main reasons network to separate traffic through the VLAN is security and performance.

    Security - you want to make sure that the management traffic is isolated as it is essential for the control of your environment and the vmotion is not encrypted.

    Performance - again be capable of managing the environment is the key and by isolating the traffic will ensure that he will have the necessary bandwidth

    Also don't forget since you already VLAN have implemented the simplest method for new virtual machines communicate will be on the same VLAN

  • More reports of free space...

    We have requirements to report on a group of VMS in some blue files.  We want to generate a report for virtual machines with less the 100 MB of free space.

    Take the script developed in the free space report, this is something that can be done?

    Try this

    $blueFolders = "Blue1","Blue2"

    $folderMoRef = Get-View -ViewType Folder -Property Name -Filter @{"Name"=$expression1} | %{

      $vm.Guest.Disk | where {$_.FreeSpace -le 100MB} |  Select @{N="VMname";E={$vm.Name}},    @{N="Path";E={$_.DiskPath}},    @{N="MBFree";E={[math]::Round(($_.FreeSpace/1MB),0)}},    @{ N="PercFree"; E={[math]::Round((100*($_.FreeSpace/$_.Capacity)),0)}}
    }} | Sort PercFree |
    Export-Csv C:\freespace.csv -NoTypeInformation -UseCulture

  • SRM 4.1.2 - stimulus Plans

    Hello

    Looking for advice.  Anyone know what are the total number of groups of VMs and Protection limits, it is recommended to have a Recovery Plan?  In a recent exercise DR we configured in the Recovery Plans have only a group of protection and associated VMs.  Failover took an age in this way.

    Thank you very much

    Graeme

    Hello

    Here's the official limits of the SRM 4.1:

    Item                                                                           Maximum
    Protected virtual machines in total 1000
    VMS protected in a single protection group 500
    150 protection associations
    Data groups 150 store
    Simultaneously running of stimulus plans 3

    Limits for groups of data and stimulus packages running store are soft and are not applied (but not recommended).

    The next book will be useful, it provides a comparison of the recovery time of various configurations:
