HA Question - planned power outage in data center network

We have a 6 node vSphere 4 cluster set for HA.  There is a network planned a few nights from now, in our datacenter outage that will last about two hours and perform all the servers in our datacenter.  I'm debating if I should go ahead and disable HA during this downtime may prevent any unwanted behavior, because all servers must have no network connectivity, including the vCenter, I would still rather not chance VMs in a loop to be switched to other servers, making this time.  It would be advisable to go and disable HA before the network outage and then reactivate later?

I would disable HA during the scheduled interruption.  I would also turn DRS, if use you it for the more convervative setting there.

  • Does anyone use this switches in a data center?

I have an interest in the switches of SG-300 or SG-500 small businesses for small and moderate use.

These are rack switches, but my question is if someone is actually using them in a rack of data center with public servers rather than catalysts?

I understand that they are small business units, but they would hold the heat, vibration in a rack? How do they practice?

I have an older catalyst, it costs less than new now that some of this small business ones, but I really need gigabit for internal LAN traffic ports and my DC tells me none has this unit to small businesses in their DC, it is not normal to use because they are not high-performance switches. IM worried to go small businesses who are actually Linksys device and not Cisco. I have some Linksys devices for personal use and at home and they are still in years. But I Don t know how they perform outside of this environment. I need to stay under $ 1000 per switch.

They would fail in a few months? Can be clustered (2 switches) so if one fails the other take the network up until I have replace the failure? If so, I could take the risk, but one dying switch would be a disaster.

My needs are low speed gigabit between the servers for backup and storage, but usually less 50 Mbit on the public Wan. These switches are really only for small office use or if they work very well with the servers in an institution? If so, I'd love to hear some real experiences, everyone I ask most of them said not to go with the switches, but then why are they still rack? They can´t be this bad or that they are not really designed for 24/7 usage?

I'd appreciate some experiences with the amount of traffic you are passing on them and for how long (months) because I Don t know anyone use so far in a remote installation.

Catalyst has shared backplanes and ASICS. SX300 and SX500 series does not work. If you do not need things like the protocols of the road (BPG, OSPF, IS - IS), VTP, CEF then these switches are very good.

The switch has generally not hardware failure unless it is due to external voltage problems. A real failure, the MTBF is probably 4 or 5 years old, and I say this because the SX300 was not of the most and I've honestly never seen a die with the exception of power problems (storms, power surges, etc.). I saw ports to die only once and a while but that does not matter much because the switches are hardware to life with replacement free advanace...

If you plan to use these switches as a Ridge with high throughput, especially in layer 2, I seriously doubt you'll break this thing.

I am not yet sold on the robustness in environments of layer 3 but as a core for sub 300 people is a good switch. In response to another concept, the SX500X switches supports VRRP.

    My questions are:

1 > should we apply patches or upgrade of our Oracle 10.1.2 and 10.1.3 we're heading for RHEL 6, I tried following the remark of Mod ID -437878.1 & 1058763.1 , but nothing is yet clear.

    Applications Oracle DBA.

1 oracle EBS 12.1.x is certified on RHEL 6 in order to ensure that they cover all the steps that are associated with this version of the OS (Oracle E-Business Suite Installation and upgrade 12 Release Notes (12.1.1) for Linux x 86-64 (Doc ID 761566.1)). So the answer is Yes for upgrading 10.1.3 ORACLE_HOME for the last group of patches and ORACLE_HOME RDBMS at 11.2.0.3 or 11.2.0.4

    2. Yes (see my answer above)

    3. I understand that the target nodes are different from the source those so you will need to upgrade the nodes of your source (as mentioned in the answer #1 above) then use quick Clone. No new installation required.

  • Migration cold vcenter server VM to another logical data center

    My version is 5.0

I have a vCenter with multiple logical datacenters.

I'm under vCenter on a virtual machine on a host in a datacenter.  The SQL Server with the vCenter database is on the same host.

I need to move the two virtual machines to a different host in another data center.

All LUNS are accessible from both hosts.

I'm under standard vSwitches, not distributed.   The vSwitches on each host have exact same exchanges that are put in place.

Can I migrate successfully cold other guests off the power, remove them from the inventory, save them with a new host and power back on.

However I'm not sure how to migrate the vCenter cold and SQL VMs.

My first thought was to turn off the power, connect the viClient directly to the guests in question and delete them from the inventory on the current host and save them to the new host.

What I don't know is if the vCenter database will have a problem with the location of the machine since I do change out vCenter.

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you

Welcome to the community - you thought initial is correct since migrate is a function of vcenter but Word of warning make sure that you select Remove flexible financing inventory and not delete from the disk - remove inventory will remove form VM guests of stocks without deleting the VM disk shape.

There will be no problem with access to the database-

  • Data Center shutdown Complete weekend activity...

    Dear team,

In our environment, we have 22 esx host 4 storage san, 4 fabric switches, network switches 4. every weekend, there is problem of complete power failure will be there, so each client weekend for full on stop data center, so we install full stop that I just want to know what will be recommended for this bee and as precaustion to take before making this kind of activity, so need your help on the same

Will it work this way, if we turned off the entire infrastructure,

    (1) fist take the glance of each virtual machine power on each host
    (2) then take snap of all the SAN data store that r connected on each host are
    (3) make the snap of networking architecture
    (4) stop each virtual machines on an esx host,.
    (5) stop ESX host
    (6) stop SAN storage
    7-stop Fabric Switches
    (8) stop all network switches

While switch on/off the infrastructure unit will it work that way,

    (1) power on network switches, after 5 minutes
    (2) after 5 minutes on the fabric power switches
    (3) power storage SAN, after 10 minutes
    (4) power on all ESX hosts after 45 minutes
    (5) power on all the virtual machines on all ESX hosts
    (6) cross check all works very well.

Correct if I'm wrong, please help me on the same.

    Concerning

    Mr. VMware

every weekend he comes from complete power failure

The steps you mentioned certainly works, but I don't see a reason for snapshots. Better make sure that you have a good backup in place. I guess you also have an exact plan on the order in which the power and off the virtual machine.

On the other side, it may be interesting to find out the reason for the failure and eliminate it or think of a suitable UPS system to avoid this procedure.

Are you sure that datacenter1 cannot communicate with datacenter2 on the network?  What datacenter is the vCenter Server?

    Your options:

    1. turn off power the virtual computer and perform a migration of cold in all of your data center.

    2. power off the virtual computer.

-Use the database browser to download the VM folder and store files on the vCenter server.

-Using the browser from data store to download the folder and files in a data store in the second datacenter.

    3. you can use a tool third 3rd as Veeam FastSCP or WinSCP to copy the files and folder VM to a data store in datacenter1 in a data store in datacenter2.

    4. you could also use VMware converter to V2V the virtual machine then it turn off and remove from the source data center.

If you provide more details or have any questions, I will be able to go further in these options.

  • BECAUSE a node: downtime after HW-power outage?

    Hello
A CCR node seems to be a good alternative to a "regular" CARS
Since we have no experience with a CCR node we are currently available literature and try to get a picture of the advantages/disadvantages.
An important point is the question "what exactly happens when a HW failure or outage occurs? It is my understanding - and what Oracle has documented - providing the Oracle Clusterware failover protection for Oracle RAC one node. If the node fails, Oracle Clusterware automatically detect the failure and restart the Oracle RAC database a node on another server in the pool.
In our case, we would have the active node in Datacenter 1, the passive node in the data center 2. So if the node in Datacenter 1 fails, the database should start on node 2 data center.

    Now my questions are:
    -who really automatically will be?
-What happens to the sessions that have been connected to the database before the HW failure?
-is it possible to determine how long will take this failover?

I'm sure someone has already tested this situation - any help will be appreciated.

    Hello

    Now my questions are:
    -who really automatically will be?

    Yes, automatic and transparent

-What happens to the sessions that have been connected to the database before the HW failure?

Depends on if you use emotive connection will be redirected to another node, if you have cold failover, the client will be a short downtime.

-is it possible to determine how long will take this failover?

Dependent failure, but normal (could failover) is on range from 1 to 3 minutes, using (emotive - Hot failover) without interruption.

  • HA and power outages

I'm on a four building campus (building A, B, C and D). Each building has its own dedicated power of electricity, so if power failure in building C, building A, B and D still have power. I intend to Vsphere application on both hosts. HOST A will lie in building A and host B will reside in the B building. The two armies will connect to an iSCSI SAN to building A (I know... potential problem). Ultimately, all virtual machines running on the two hosts should be able to run on the same host, if the other loses power.

HOST A iSCSI SAN and Vcenter (running on a virtual host A machine) connected to the ups (~ 15-20 minutes duration on battery) in building A

The HOST B connected to an inverter (~ 20 minutes duration on battery) in the B building

If I lose the power of building A, how HA will know at startup if the UPS is keeping the power in A HOST? You're supposed to run one instance of Vcenter on all hosts to protect against power outages? Even though I have Vcenter on a physical machine in A building, he dies at the time wherever the UPS runs out. It seems to me HA is really designed for a failure of the host only and no power cuts. Come to think of it, the SAN will also go that leaves the HOST B Building B useless.

So, I guess I answered my own question. HA is not designed for power outages. Laughing out loud! I can give me points?

I understand that update more with you.  What I said initially on VC not having does not need to stay online is important to keep in mind.  If you can get 2 independent circuits who would not tend to descend at the same time, so you can connect two power supplies in the hosts and the SAN in the two circuits so nothing falls down when a single circuit fails.

If you are looking for redundancy, when a whole building goes down you still do replication of VM data with SAN functionality or software.

Many iSCSI SAN support good replication and so would put another instance of iSCSI SAN in the second site, and configure replication.  There is a VMware called VMware Disaster Recovery option that could automate the failover in this case.

Software products are available to perform the replication also:

    Veeam Backup

    Double-take for VMware

The software solutions are a bit more involved in the installation and maintenance program, but less expensive for small installations.

  • Moving Cluster to new data center and move ASM Lun

    Hello

My question is for an upcoming project. We want to grow our three existing node on our other data Center cluster. Servers will be moved and would re - ip, but Oracle, CRS and ASM houses remain intact.

We have our ASM on EMC Clariion disks. The idea is to use EMC Replication Manager to replicate the LUNS on EMC Clarion in the other data center and to present them to the cluster.

My question is if it looks like a valid plan, or I think to simplistic?

Will keep it even replicated LUN the ASM disk identity and data in order to be recognized and available in start?

In addition, in order to minimize downtime, we want to move a single node of the cluster first, then others do appear later.

    Thanks for your opinions.

    Hello

To replicate ASMDISK success, all databases in the Diskgroup must be down or in backup mode.
Replication starts with the online database (IE database in backup mode hot) needs attention, because all data/redo/controlfile files will be copied in use (i.e. corrupt), be necessary will perform database recovery.

If you have not saved your data and you want to start the computer with Linux Livecd such as Knoppix and copy your data files on an external hard drive. It is a precautionary measure before the step follows because things happens. ;-)

    Then do a repair installation.

  • Mini Data Center design

    Hello

I have a few doubts about the best solution for the design of a mini data center.

In the data center, there is a 6500 with FWSM module installed, there are a few created vlans, each of them in the fwsm module. For example, a back-end to communicate with a server in the front end server must always go through the firewall. My question is, these flows through the firewall that does not reduce the speed of communication?

What is the best practice, just to pass the communications with the Wan in the firewall, and the communication of vlan between front-end and back-end is only set up to 6500?

    Thank you

Although security is a subject with many facets. How to fix you can do things depends on part on your needs to provide the functionality for the application to work.

If the database servers do not need to Internet, just keep on a VLAN internal only and do not allow to be routed even initialized requests internally by. If the database servers have need to talk to the Internet (why is this really necessary would be a good question to ask - a bastion host could be used instead?), then lock the rules in the FWSM with an access list that allows only addresses and ports as necessary for the minimum necessary service work.

In any scenario, your should analyse your servers (for example with Nessus) and harden to reduce their exposed attack surface. Additional measures could include things like Tripwire on the servers to block further down. Audit of system access - and actually looking at the newspapers! -also helps. Tools such as iptables on Linux or Windows Firewall servers must be a lever to allow only the communications in and out of the box as necessary so that it can perform its designated function.

4270 IPS connected to the distribution in the data center, each with each 6509, now the question is how to be redundancy/failover works in inline and out-of-use of the band.

Yes, and especially any configuration change you need to do (such as signature tuning) must be made each individual sensor unless you have the CSM. This is quite annoying, your signature, it seems you work for a gold partner, message to Cisco, to stop the lame marketing stuff "we don't need regular tipping STP/ECLB enough" and ask them to provide an adequate failover.

    Cordially :)
