Hard drive could be damaged. CHIP is triggered. Is it safe to use?

Hi guys,.

once more, after the appeal of Dell with Seagate, I come here...

The HD had an impact while working, and Scandisk has found a lot of mistakes at the end of the disc (which is a Seagate 7200 RPM 160 GB). Dell Diagnostic tool also found errors in the same area.

Dell was not able to tell me what to do, because they use to change discs, only not to repair.

A Seagate technician, mail, spoke of ditches and other strange things and told me that I had to change HD. But another, by phone, told me to use Seatools, to run the complete two consecutive zeros, then short the Test, then the long ordeal. If no wher errors found I could use it safely. LBA where is not a problem, he said.

I did, and the Long Test found only LBA, no other errors. So I should be able to use the HD.

But when I try to install Media Direct I can't. The istall process Media Direct (a Dell program: I have a XPS 1530) is that as a first step, you need to run the live CD media to create a partition for this program, you must install the operating system, then (from the BONE) can install Media Direct (which automatically installs in the partition created for this).

When I run the MediaDirect cd it says SMART threshold is exceeded on ATA device, and it does not create the partition.

I tried to put the Vista dvd and apparently he would allow me to install VIsta, I was also able to create a partition. Even if there is a message saying I should better use another HD, I imagine that it's because of the indicators of LBA, so I don't think it's something serious.

I've used several programs from a bootable cd, and I've written 0 in the entire disk several times, I deleted completely... And the latest scans showed much less LBA.

With a program called MHHD, I disabled the CHIP, but Media Direct gave the same error.

I could live without Media Direct, but I can use the drive safely?

SeaTools said that SMART is triggered (?). I have no idea on what is SMART and means that which is triggered.

I noticed the first damaged area was 90% of the car, so I think that to create a partition that includes this last part of the drive and use it for the swap file (initially I thought to not use it, but I find safe to use for the swap file).

With a program (I don't remember the name), I deleted the MBR. Is this a problem? I thought that the MBR is re-created during installation of the operating system, isn't it?

SUggestions?

my hard is damaged in some portion.can, I changed the new hard drive and reinstall Windows vista with the existing product key?

    Hello

Yes, you can reinstall vista with your product key on the new hard drive

Contact the computer manufacturer and ask them to send you to vista recovery disks to reinstall the operating system back as it was when you bought it

they do it for a nominal cost of $

or borrow a vista microsoft dvd; not a HP, Acer recovery disk etc

Make sure that you borrow the correct 32-bit or 64-bit microsoft dvd to your computer

they contain all versions of vista

This is the product key that determines which version of vista is installed

    Hello

I think it might be 2 possibilities, why it does not work.
First the external drive is dead and that is why it does not work or there is something wrong with the USB ports.
Sometimes after installing SP2, the ports will not work.

For this, I found this Microsoft Knowledge base article:
    http://support.Microsoft.com/?kbid=873169

I think you should try to connect this USB HDD on another computer, make sure that the HARD drive is not altered.

My brother uses a with USB cable external HARD disk that supports 2 USB connectors.
This cable allows you to use the USB ports and dual power.
I think that's not a bad idea, try using a USB hub with an external power supply and then connect the HDD to this hub.

    Eventually, it helps.

  • Responsible for Vista and works fine for about 2 days now, I get the product in use key try AnotherOne coming soon. I have old MB and HARD drive if that can help prove that I only want to use the key on a single machine.

As noted, my motherboard has failed.  IDE only AGP CPU core.  Not much use trying to find anotherof those.  Replaced the motherboard with a newer version.  It has SATA, multi core processor, etc.  Processor and HARD drive had to be replaced.

My Vista home premium 32 bit running on my machine for years.  I loaded it on the upgrade with no problems.  Went to windows update and SP1 and then SP2 and all other windows updates suggest and worked very well, for a few days.

Now, I get a message that the product key is already used and need to buy AnotherOne coming soon.

I didn't really want to do.

  • I have CS5 - need to reinstall after a hard drive change - it doesn't accept my box serial number (as used above)?

I had my computer upgraded with a new hard drive.

I temporarily installed CS5 on the "desktop", while the update was made.

Now when you reinstall CS5 it will not accept the correct serial number on the box provided

What can I do to make it registered on the computer being updated?

If you are referring to the external cardboard box which is not likely the serial number.  It is normally located inside on the case/box/CD.  Check your Adobe account online for the serial number.  If you have registered the software, it may be there.

  • I replaced the hard drive in my system. How can I reinstall Windows and use my key to activate it?

    Vista operating system software

I have a HP laptop running windows vista.  The crashed(non-recoverable) of hard disk and I have replaced the material.  I have a valid license key of Vista code and would like to know if I can download vista and use my codekey to activate it on the original laptop which has windows vista sticker Home premium OEMAct on the back.

    Hello

There is no Windows Vista downloads available from Microsoft.

You can contact HP and ask them to send you a set of recovery disks.

They should do this for a small fee.

    http://h20566.www2.HP.com/portal/site/hpsc/public/help/contactHP/home/?AC.admitted=1340852823523.876444892.199480143

To reinstall Vista using their recovery disk/s, you start from the 1st recovery disk they provide and follow the manufacturer's instructions to reinstall:

You need to change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order:

How to change the Boot order in BIOS:

    http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/SS/bootorderchange.htm

"How to replace Microsoft software or hardware, order service packs and replace product manuals.

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/326246

Some manufacturers have more available Vista recovery disks.

If this happens, you may need to try this instead:

You can also borrow and use a Microsoft Vista DVD, which contains the files for the different editions of Vista (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate) must be installed. The product key on your computer / Laptop box determines what Edition is installed.

Other manufacturers recovery DVDs are should not be used for this purpose.

And you need to know the version of 'bit' for Vista, as 32-bit and 64-bit editions come on different DVDs

Here's how to do a clean install of Vista using a DVD of Vista from Microsoft:

"How to do a clean install and configure with a full Version of Vista '

    http://www.Vistax64.com/tutorials/117366-clean-install-full-version-Vista.html

And phone Activation may be necessary when you use the above installation method.

  • Pavilion p7-1254: I have added a second hard drive then how closely I put it to the top and use it?

A year or two ago the original HD died and I took it to a shop and they replaced and now I did know they put in a Western digital 320 GB which is full now. so, I got a seagate 2 TB and have it instaled in the case and now I need to know how to set up? should I move or clone all the info on the new drive, or use both at the same time?

    Hello

Now, you have two drives, C: and another new letter (e.g. D on your computer.) All new file you save on D:, not C:. After a week or two to settle down, if you want, you can start to move old data/files in C: D:, especially videos, music or old files.

    Hello

Disabled first happened to scan your system with MSE or another anti-virus program? You have scanned your system with Malware bytes? Before restoration, it is best to make sure that your system is clean. Some viruses will infect the system and also infected restore points, you did.
    Malware bytes: www.malwarebytes.org
If you are unable to run these is normal mode, then try safe mode by pressing the F8 key for the system to start.

  • Pass water damaged hard drive Macbook Pro (mid-2010) to another Macbook Pro (mid-2010)?

Someone accidentally spilled water on my MacBook Pro 'Core i7' 2.66 GHz 15 "mid-2010 and after trying to dry out for a few days, I'm sure that the keyboard is in ruins, and it may be worse (I suspect the logic board like most people), but I need to (would really) keep my documents etc. However, we happen to have an another i7 2.66 GHz 15 "mid 2010 Macbook Pro lying around not being used. I'm a student in computer engineering and I'm pretty good with electronics and figure, that I can use the practice, so I was planning on trying to replace the keyboard myself, but I plan on getting a new MBP in the next few months, so I'd rather do less work if possible. MY MAIN QUESTION IS: since I'm very lucky and I have two little nearly exact same model MBP can put the hard drive of the damaged water MBP (also long the HDD no is not damaged by water) in the MBP running? And if so, what would be my challenges and if it works well enough to use for a month or two? Thank you!

TLDR: I can take a HDD on a MBP and put it in a similar model without too much difficulty?

Yes, but you're probably better to put in an envelope instead. If you start another Mac, or in an enclosure closed or internally, a very small number of parameters will not be postponed, and some commercial programs may refuse to run.

  • Dual Boot with windows XP Pro with 2 HARD drive, error on secondary windows install: "Windows did not start because of a configuration of the disk of the computer problem. Could not read the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware... »

Hi, I recently bought a new Hitachi 1 TB internal hard drive. I wanted to do a clean install on the new drive (d), be able to dual boot my computer and leave my old 300 GB disk (C :) as the primary windows installation. After physically installing the new HARD drive, I noticed that "new hardware found" and the the brand name flashed in the bottom right corner. I thought I'd see the new hard drive in my computer, but I did not. I initialized the new HARD drive with the computer management window (right click on my computer - manage) and I also formatted in NTFS (I had to change my printer hard drive letter to assign the new HARD drive with the letter D, but I've made other changes after this step). Now, I could see and use in my main windows on the C: installation. I then installed a windows new copy XP pro with the installation CD I got for my C: but on the D: (Note: I have a Dell computer (and the Dell reinstallation CD) and my current version of windows has SP3 while the installation CD is only SP2) (I also reformatted my HARD drive during the installation of windows to NTFS)

Now when I try to start on installing the new on my D: I get "Windows did not start because of a configuration of the disk of the computer problem. Could not read the selected boot disk. Check startup disk and hardware access path. "and another line saying to refer to manuals HARD drive and windows.

My Boot.ini file at this time was:

    [boot loader]
    Timeout = 5
    default = multi (0) disk (0) rdisk (0) partition (2) \WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    "multi (0) disk (0) rdisk (0) partition (2) \WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional "/ noexecute = optin/fastdetect
    "signature (ac516a5c) disk (0) rdisk (0) partition (1) \WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional own "/ noexecute = optin/fastdetect

I looked towards the top of this help page, but for now I'm unlucky:

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/314477

(The next steps I took by throwing from the Windows CD and go into the repair console)

I tried to use the bootcfg /rebuild but the line to boot.ini for my secondary HARD drive still does not work.

    He gave me something like:

    [boot loader]
    Timeout = 5
    default = multi (0) disk (0) rdisk (0) partition (2) \WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    "multi (0) disk (0) rdisk (0) partition (2) \WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional "/ noexecute = optin/fastdetect
    "signature (ac516a5c) disk (0) rdisk (1) partition (1) \WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional own "/ noexecute = optin/fastdetect

I also tried to change the signature() to multi (0), but it did not work. (or try almost all possible permutations of disk() and rdisk() partition() 0 to 2).

I also tried to use expand F(dvd-drive):\i386\ntkrnlmp(I_have_a_duo-core).ex_ D:\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe and a few other combinations, but I when I login as D:\windows simply, it fails to extend with a message like "could not develop" or C:\windows I get "restricted access".

I have not yet tried CHKDSK/r, but since I did a clean install on a newly formatted drive... I don't think it would work.

I've also marked the partition on the D: as active (in computer management), but it did not help me.

I've done a first installation of windows repair, strangely, I couldn't fix this one... Still does not work...

My default windows installation yet works very well & I see that windows has been installed on the D: but I'm ideas from how to operate the dual-boot, can someone throw me a BONE on what to do?

Maybe try to do something with the Boot Manager (whatever it is?) Create a new partition and use it as a boot manager? I don't really want to do this, because if I made a mistake I will be unable to use my computer and dual boot should work without going through all this trouble... But I found this page: http://technet.microsoft.com/fr-fr/library/ee829686%28WS.10%29.aspx

Could a clean install two HDD help? I hope I won't have to do...

    Someone has an idea?

PS: I'm not such an advanced user so I need a solution step by step, thanks!

Edit: I also noted that I can't see my new HARD drive in my BIOS... weird... SATA-0 is my old drive HARD 1 and 2 are my dvd 3-5 readers are 'off' and it doesn't seem to be anything that it is plugged in. I also have 4 bays for internal HARD disks. Now, 2 are busy.

Edit2: I looked inside my case and enabled the good Sata in the Bios after a reboot it detected the drive correctly. Dual boot doesn't always work well... The fact that it was disable in the BIOS while I was installing the new HARD drive could change anything? Hmm...

In case I wasn't clear enough: I had a windows XP Pro installed on my C:, bought a new hard drive and installed the same copy of windows on it (d). I think that should allow me to double boot between the two installs different. Even if for some reason I can't boot from one on my D:. Andrew, I do not understand why you so far physically disconnect the other drive, the point of the whole operation is to build a boot.ini file so that the BIOS knows that it y facilities 2 windows and you allow to choose (and not have conflicting problems between the 2 systems), someone correct me if I'm wrong? "Expand" the part of my first post made reference to one of the solutions provided by Microsoft in the first link that I have included in my previous post (but I can't seem to work).

In addition, it is the procedure that I followed: http://www.ehow.com/how_5950826_boot-two-different-hard-drives.html

(except I've had the first installation already done).

Andrew "also, once a new hd is plugged on the pc & running, most of the BIOS will place (them) as 1st priority hd, set the BIOS to do this", you mean that by installing separately from windows on each unit when the other is not plugged in, I could choose what disk to start from defining their priority in the BIOS once they are all plugged back? It's too tedious (as I intend to move frequently between the 2 installs) and requires a computer to other users of the lack of computer knowledge. Unfortunately, it is not a viable option.

EDIT: I DID IT! Hmmm... Well, I double checked in the recovery console, the path of the new HARD drive with the arc command Scan. Tried to start again with the MULTI (0) in my boot.ini and it worked... I also had my windows install CD in. Maybe that is why I could not start, windows needs the CD to complete the installation?
