help, change white 100% transparent, transparent 50% Gray 50%, 0% transparent black? photo examples

How should I take a black and white photo like this:

and convert it to various levels of gray are different levels of transparency like this:

I need converted as shown above, because I want the background colors of a web page to come through the image.

I can't use simply magic wand to remove white, because I'm really eager to spend some colors although the levels of gray. The darker the gray level, less color going through.

So if you took the original and convert it, you get this kind of effect when its sitting on a red color of web page:

The photos above, I did as you can see. but these are objects simple rectangle and I did split the image into different layers, a layer for each different amount of gray bar, and then I changed the opacity for each layer respectively.

I can't exactly cut a picture when there is a greater variety of grey levels in the more complex images such as this one:

So far my searches have not answered the question, most describe how to blend two images to get a similar result, but the background must be mixed in photoshop. (I need to mix effect occur regardless of what uses of the Web page background color, so I just need to convert levels of transparency only.) After hours of wading through the material, trying to find an answer I hope get help from good people on the forums here, or perhaps a link to a tutorial showing how do.

Copy your image, create a new document of the same size with a black fill layer, then create a layer for the fill layer mask.  Now target the layer mask, then go to the control panel strings and choose the channel mask and make it visible.  Now paste your image and Image - adjustment - invert (because black is transparent).

    You don't need to choose something that is already enabled. The existing transparency of this image makes this task easier.

    Just open your levels (CTRL-L) and drag the white marker on the left, just after the outbreak.

    I ve you have strange problem with opacity mask.

    I want to object to gradiently from 0% to 100% of transparency - and it works and is displayed correctly - unless I result raster in Photoshop. Then, it looks like the left side of the attached photo - object is never 100% transparent. If I raster via Adobe Acrobat file, the result is correct, as shown on the right side of the image.

    What I am doing wrong?

    I can easily reproduce the bug, and that's what it's a bug.

    If you copy and paste or even if you place the pdf file and I guess the Illustrator into a photoshop document file and probably open the Illustrator file in Photoshop, you will get the same result, it will not disappear to full transparency.

    But there is a work around which is in the file > export > then open Photoshop or pace that docuent and everything will be as expected.

    You do not have something wrong, it's a bug.

    How happened so long without anyone noticing it is beyond me, and I'd say it's a bug in Photoshop, but it is unlikely that they will admit it

    and therefore export to psd rather than paste, place or opening in Photoshop is the work around.

    Place or open the pdf in Photoshop will not work because of the way translated photoshop mask too thin way so that Illustrator export to psd very well. This is why I call it a problem of Photoshop.

    Try something like the following: (it is not the only way)

    1 double click on the background to layer the bottom a regular layer

    2. Add a new empty layer preceding. (Layer > new > layer)

    3. use the Rectangle tool to draw a rectangular selection smaller than the photo

    4 Edition > fill > black

    5. Select > deselect

    6. move the layer under the photo layer (drag thumbnail in the layers panel)

    7. click the photo layer and go to layer > create clipping mask

    8. click on the full black layer and go to filter > blur > Blur Gaussian to fade at the edge of transparency.

    If_Yes_you can download the files from here. Left click
    the drive letter that corresponds to the SD card slot should
