Help SC4020 Multipathing

Hi all

Just recently install a new SC4020 compellent and R730xd server. This will be part of a larger network, but at the moment I am stable failover and redundancy and just trying to get my head around Ports, virtual and MP.

Current test environment includes an Ethernet switch to Compellent SAN, 2 switches of fiber and 1 x hypervisor. My wiring is identical to that under second hypervisor (picture OK messages hopefully) - Page 39 of the owner's manual 'two networks iSCSI with two 2-port storage controllers '.

I wanted to check our environment just to make sure that I have properly implemented. I faked a controller restart and go to failure and have successfully completed a data online store that I'm happy, but there are some behavior I have experience with mappings from iSCSI that I don't feel is consistent with the intended design.

Server 6.0 ESXi with 25GB iSCSI volume mapped in the center of storage

In vSphere iSCSI initiators: 10.1.1.4:3260 and 10.1.1.5:3260

Lack of domain controller 1 IP: 10.1.1.4

Lack of domain controller 2 IP: 10.1.1.5

VMKernel1: 10.1.1.2 (mapped to vmnic0)

VMKernel2: 10.1.1.3 (mapped to vmnic1)

    We recently bought a Dell EqualLogic SAN. Our main goal for this device was to begin to use pools of resources and be able to do a few HA and Live migration. We have worked with XenServer and Xen Cloud for a while and got no e/s on iScsi performance we were hoping for. With the help of Multipath on the main host machine we get on 250 Mbps (which we are satisfied). On the guest computers, we get only 120 Mbps.

    My question to the community of VMWare; If we wanted to use products VMWare is the possibility to get more then 1 Gbps i/o throughput on a guest PC? And if so, if it is a PDF or a post somewhere that could explain how to do this?

    Let me know, thanks!

    I use fixed to the management policy multichannel but way preferred as you can see. I wonder if it's a problem because my SAN controller event logs Gets the following logs all the time:

    "The event 4207001b; Indicates the virtual disk is passed to the property of the other controller HSV200.

    0310001f; A virtual disk in the storage system has changed master controller. »

    Your contribution is welcome. How to manage and distribute the workload between different virtual machines? We have heavy files, Exchange server and SQL server servers.

    Starting to make sense now, as I've never seen these errors in my controllers 3 months I was running on my san EVA, but I looked in the newspaper a few weeks after I upgraded my HP Agents (who at the same time, I restarted the ESX servers) and I noticed the errors.

    Thanks for the link!

    See you soon,.

  • Reduce the number of iSCSI Multipathing in paths

    I'm experimenting with performance iSCSI on NAS. Currently I have 4 NICs on the host and 4 NICs on the NAS. That leaves me with 16 channels for iSCSI data store. I would like to disable multipathing so I find myself with 4 paths. I would try having NIC1 on the host go on the NAS NIC1 and NIC2 on the host then goes to NIC2 on the NAS, so on and so forth. Is this possible? I saw that I could disable paths but I did anyway to say which way goes to which nic so that I might finish with 4 paths all on the same network adapter. Any help would be appreciated.

    I found that if I broke to the top of each of the 4 NIC I used for iSCSI in different subnets traffic and then set the 4 network cards on the NAS in the same subnets I could get the number of paths down to 4. However with adapter for iSCSI for the VMware software there is no way to have more than 1 NIC of the flow value. Round Robin will use only 1 NETWORK with a value of debit card while I was stuck with the help of only 25% of the potential flow of the NAS for iSCSI traffic.

    The windows machine

    1. make sure that you can see WWPN in the HBA bios.

    2. starting at OS level check LUN status using above commands so Multipathing s/w is installed, Else look for hard drives in the Device Manager (it must be something lik DISK IBM)

  • Need help to understand the network of vSphere environment

    Hello

    I need your help in understanding the network environment in vSphere. Please see the diagram and the text below:

    vm.png

    NIC #1 - Management Port (access from client vsphere, vCenter server)

    NIC #2 - Port of VMkernal (for iSCSI, vMotion, etc.)

    NIC #3 -?

    #4 – CARTE NETWORK INTERFACE?

    Q1 how allow external users to access services over the ESX host? (for example, IIS, FTP, Exchange, NFS)

    Q2, what will be the role of the other two network cards? Is it connected to the physical switch?

    * Ask you all to please help me by sharing your knowledge / experience on the network portion, you have made in your environment as NIC how, what to do with that. *

    I really need to understand the networking of concepts in vSphere, hope that your help!

    Best regards: Yash

    With an additional NIC with 2 port a general configuration might look like this:

    vSwitch0 - vmnic0, vmnic1 (connected to different physical switches)

    Network VMkernel management

    VMotion VMkernel network (own IP network, own VLAN)

    Better if they is configured as active / standby.

    vSwitch1 - vmnic2, vmnic3 (connected to different physical switches)

    Trade VM

    vSwitch2 - vmnic4, vmnic5 (connected to different physical switches)

    VMkernel iSCSI (own IP network, own VLAN)

    Ideal if it is added to the component Multipath iSCSI, which is quite easy to vSphere 5.

  • Module Extension of Multipathing EqualLogic for VMware vSphere 5 Std.

    Hi all

    Can install EqualLogic Multipathing plug-in for VMware with vSphere 5.0 STD license?

    Thank you.

    The file PDF of Dell is indeed the case - you must be at least vSphere Enterprise in order to use any third party Multipathing module (such as Dell MEM, EMC PowerPath/VE, etc.).

    See the link depending on which compares the features available in each edition of vSphere.  The feature that we are talking about here is called 'Storage API for Multipathing' and only in Enterprise and Enterprise Plus:

    http://www.VMware.com/products/vSphere/buy/editions_comparison.html

    You can still use the native multipathing in vSphere, but unless you upgrade to Enterprise you will not be able to use the MEM.

    I hope this helps.

  • iSCSI Multipathing - really useful?

    Suppose to have this configuration:

    2 ESXi host-> HP DL380 G7 (4 x 1 Gbit NIC + 2 x 10 Gbit NIC)

    1 storage-> MSA P2000 (2 x 1 Gbit NIC + 4 x 10 Gbit NIC)

    The two hosts will be connected to the storage through 10 Gbit adapter. Since no 10 Gbit switch is available, guests will be DIRECTLY connected to the storage.

    Multipathing is always necessary in this case? I mean, I can understand, multiple paths is very useful if you have several path to reach the storage (multiple switch with a network different for examples). But in this case, if for example a 10 Gbit card on one server will be lost, I would therefore lost two way.

    Am I wrong?

    Is 4 x 10 GbE NIC on storing a single NETWORK card? Otherwise, you can cross the cables from hosts to it and have a warranty from the point of view of the moribund NIC storage.

    Since I read your post tos ay that the cards 2 x 10 GbE NIC on the hosts are a single card, and if storage 4 x 10 GbE NIC is also a unique card, while the only reason for multipath would be to have access to the additional uplinks to a higher throughput of iSCSI.

    I would consider using the 1GbE NIC as an uplink ensures 10GbE links to help prevent single points of failure.

  • EqualLogic Multipathing plug-in - issues with linking using setup.pl

    I get this error when I try to get the Module of Extension Multipathing EqualLogic to configure my ESXi 4.1 box.

    Could not bind vmk1 one iSCSI adapters.

    I have a Dell M710 server. There the Broadcom 57711 NIC with load HBAs iSCSI hardware.

    Here are the steps to reproduce the problem:

    Installed ESXi 4.1 on host M710

    ESXi host configured with a password

    ESXi host configured with the IP address settings

    Connected to my vMA host (who has a local copy of the DELL-eql-mem - 1.0.0.130413)

    vifp addserver 192.168.110.63

    vifptarget s 192.168.110.63

    ./Setup.pl--installation--server = 192.168.110.63 - bundle = dell-eql-mem - 1.0.0.130413.zip

    I then reboot the ESXi host

    Once restarted

    vifptarget s 192.168.110.63

    ./Setup.pl--configure--serveur = 192.168.110.63 - vswitch = vSwitchISCSI - mtu = 1500 - NIC = vmnic6 - ips = 192.168.102.98 - subnet mask = 255.255.255.0 - vmkernel iSCSI - groupip = 192.168.102.40 =

    Then, it produces the following output:

    Network iSCSI Multipathing configuration:

    vswitch = vSwitchISCSI

    MTU = 1500

    NIC = vmnic6

    IPS = 192.168.102.98

    subnet mask = 255.255.255.0

    VMkernel = iSCSI

    EQL group IP = 192.168.102.40

    Creation vSwitchISCSI vSwitch.

    Definition of vSwitch MTU to 1500.

    Creating portgroup iSCSI0 on vSwitchISCSI vSwitch.

    192.168.102.98 to iSCSI0 IP address assignment.

    Create a new bridge.

    The addition of link rising vmnic6 to vSwitchISCSI.

    The definition of new uplinks for vSwitchISCSI.

    Definition of uplink for iSCSI0 on vmnic6.

    Could not bind vmk1 one iSCSI adapters.

    Argh

    So I use the vSphere Client to remove the switch, he created (and vmk etc ports)

    I then try again, this time with software instead of hardware iSCSI iSCSI

    ./Setup.pl--configure--serveur = 192.168.110.63 - vswitch = vSwitchISCSI - mtu = 1500 - NIC = vmnic6 - ips = 192.168.102.98 - subnet mask = 255.255.255.0 - vmkernel iSCSI - nohwiscsi - enableswiscsi - groupip = 192.168.102.40 =

    Which produces the following output:

    Network iSCSI Multipathing configuration:

    vswitch = vSwitchISCSI

    MTU = 1500

    NIC = vmnic6

    IPS = 192.168.102.98

    subnet mask = 255.255.255.0

    VMkernel = iSCSI

    enableswiscsi = 1

    nohwiscsi = 1

    Activation of initiator SW.

    Permit SW initiator.

    Could not bind vmk1 one iSCSI adapters.

    Ugh once again.

    What I'm missing here? The commands that I use to setup.pl are actually given to me by setup.pl when I use the option - command sets:

    ./Setup.pl--configure--server = 192.168.110.63

    It has a nice Wizard that you ask all the questions, then tells you what is the actual command to use.

    I know that my steps using only 1 network card but I started using 2 network adapters and 2 IP addresses but it gave me the same error. For troubleshooting purposes, I decided to use only 1 network card and 1 IP to test. I also tried vmnic7 instead of vmnic6 with a different IP address but no luck.

    I tried a fresh install of ESXi twice.

    A huge 10 points to someone who can solve my problem

    VCP3 & VCP4 32846

    VSP4

    VTSP4

    Updated the commands I used wrong vifp instead of vifptarget, the problem still exists, but tried to fix this error.

    Box293,

    Which, in my opinion, happened is that vmk1 is already bound to something, the iSCSI Software card or hardware iSCSI adapter, possible earlier attempts or possible to have the classic configuration path fixed on this server - less certain on this second possibility.

    Deleting a key vmk from the GUI does not cancel the bindings, this must be done from the CLI with the command 'esxcli swisici '.

    esxcli swiscsi nic list d vmhba37 # lists all interconnect them related to hardware/software iSCSI card

    esxcli swiscsi nic remove - n vmk1 d vmhba37 # this will remove the binding vmk1

    Do these steps should help you clean any link you have.

    A lazy way to clean the link would be to re - install ESXi

    I hope this helps.

    I have multiple ESX 3.5 servers, all connected to a San.  The problem, it's when the SAN was originally installed, it was done with 1 single path controller, so each LUN has today only 2 channels per server, instead of 4 favorite.  I ran the wiring for my 2 additional paths and just set up the zoning - my question: is there something special I have to do for my servers ESX automatically pick up 2 new paths, and will be they will adjust automatically?  Should I do it live or in maintenance mode?

    Thank you.

    If zoning is all good, then on the ESX host you will need to do a new analysis for storage adapters in order to recognize the paths of the ESX host. I would recommend that you test this on a few servers not critics, and if the change configuration is successful it implement on others. Be sure to use politics of Multipathing recommended either fixed or MRU, check on VMware HCL to the Bay of storage for more information. However if you use policy fixed, you will need to manually set the path preferred by configuring > Datastore > properties > manage paths.

    I hope this information helps!

  • iSCSI Multipathing vs just make the NICs active/active (vSphere)

    Hello

    I have 2 physical cards in my iSCSI vSwitch for dedicated and I understand that if I want to use multipathing I need to create 2 VMKernel ports, assign to each NETWORK adapter and connect them to the iSCSI initiator using the CLI interface.

    It is, what are the benefits this new management feature gives multichannel just teaming network adapters in an Active / Active configuration? The two configurations are not only as redundant ones than the others?

    Thank you

    Pete

    MPIO allows a server with multiple NICs for transmitting and receiving of I/O across all interfaces available in a compatible SAN corresponding MPIO.  If a server had four 1 GB/s network adapters and SAN had four 1 GB/s network adapters, the theoretical maximum rate would be about 400 MB/s (3.2 Gbit/s).

    Aggregation by grouping NETWORK adapters (or LACP, PAgP, 802.3ad, etc.) doesn't work the same way. Aggregation of links does not improve the throughput of a single traffic flow (a single source of communication with a single destination).  Only one stream will always travel the SAME path.

    The advantage of the aggregation of links is seen when several 'unique' streams (each with different source / destination) exist.  Each individual stream is sent down from its own available NETWORK adapter interface (computed by a hash algorithm).  Most unique feeds, most used network cards, more view aggregate throughput achieved. Aggregation of links will not improve throughput for iSCSI, although it gives a degree of redundancy.

    I hope this helps.
