    I tried to install HP C4280 all-in-one printer in my system Vista Home Premium SP2 and still get a fatal error - Installation failed - exit code 1603.

    I tried everything: update Windows Installer, disable all non-Microsoft boot, MSI cleanup, services etc., with update installation packages: driver only and the software bundle complete and always eventually fail.

    Make sure that there is not any paper in rolls of entry into the paper tray.  Take all the paper in the tray and use a flashlight to look at where the rollers are in.

    I had printers HP all-in-one for years and have been very happy with them so far. I don't do a lot of printing, and my last printer, the HP Deskjet 2510 would keep ink for 6 months. He was a shot-color cartridge and a black cartridge. My current printer, the C309-a, feeding ink. It has 4 individual color cartridges and a black photo cartridge. I haven't printed 50 sheets with black ink and the cartridge is almost empty. On 2 February, I changed all the cartridges and with the small amount of printing I did I think that all cartridges must be more than half full.

    I read that this type printer goes through a process to prepare for printing using ink so I only turn the printer on when I need to print, rather than let on and he prepares to print every day when I turn on my laptop.

    What can be done to save the ink, which is very expensive? If this issue cannot be solved, I'll have to look at printers other than HP, when I buy my next.

    I suggest to leave the printer, it will enter a low power state automatically.  Make sure that you always have the printer plugged in to an outlet.  If you use an external switch (e.g. a Director or switch the power jack) out of ink will be used each time you start.

    The printer will give an early warning that the ink becomes low, the cartridges do not need to be replaced until print quality begins to suffer.  Ink warning is intended to give notice if you have the time to have a replacement in hand.

    Some other suggestions:

    • Do not run unnecessary cleaning cycles.  Cleaning cycles are rarely necessary and use ink.
    • Use draft mode printing of common materials.  Draft mode uses about half Normal or best mode ink.
    • If printing on plain paper using "Plain paper" parameters in the selection of paper.
    • Not your case, but if you did a lot of printing XL cartridges have a better cost per page value.

    Recently installed Windows 8 driver for my HP 2710 all-in-one printer.  Message that the Installation was successful, however, test page does not print at all. Sent some documents from another application to print, it showed the PRINTER STATE of ERROR and 2 or 3 in waiting in the queue.  Note: I checked the printer, replace the color cartridge and the alignment test was perfect.  Thanks for your help.

    I noticed your post not being able to print after a recent Windows 8 upgraded. I would like that you try to run the HP print and Scan Doctor which is a tool that will search for printing errors and correct them.

    Photosmart C4280 all-in-one - changed the ink cartridge and print alignment page but now paper RSS to halfway and get message that says transport jam. No visible jam. Following video instructions to reset and hard reset.  Cleaned all the reels twice and still the same.

    You are welcome.  I wish that would work for you.  You have tried everything in the document of solving problems, but nothing did.

    The only other thing I can think of would be to do a complete reset of semi.  If successful, this reset the default printer and clear the memory.  If the printer was on a wireless network, it should be removed and would need to be reconnected.  If you want to try this, I can send you the steps in a private message to your Forums HP box.  I need you agree to not post the stages.  Let me know what you decide.
