  I believe you can reinstall right under the trial, use preferably the full path in three steps (the otherwise strange things may persist):

  (1) uninstall (check the box to delete the preferences),

  (2) run the cleanup tool, see the link below,

  (3) reinstall.

  Before you import the file, please go to file > Project Settings > General and change Video Renderer software only Mercury playback engine. Click OK , and then select Remove previews. Then, import the file and see if it still crashes.

  It sounds like a video driver issue, but it can also occur when another application interacts with the video driver somehow. I could start by restarting in Mode safe mode and see if Illustrator can handle the screen without these problems. If the game is played on your system, they can sometimes leave the GPU in a strange state.

  AICC 17.1 and especially now supports monitors HiDPI so the scale of the user interface is now based on the operating system display settings. You can check Control Panel > appearance and personalization > display and change text size to show more small if it is shown larger that you stated.
