High latency LDAP with ESXi 6

We have Gen9 HP with Emulex 10 GB (driver v10.5.121.7) runs the last 6.0 ESXi and high latency experience above 50ms to 1.5 seconds with LDAP queries between continuous Windows or VM to DC.   However, to move the domain controller to an ESXi 5.5/6.0 with the latency of the network 1 Gb is down to below 50ms.  If you ping just two servers, ping response is < 1ms.

Anyone else having this problem? It seems to happen with ESXi 6.0 with 10 GB Networki.   ESXi 5,5 of 10 GB seems to work very well.

> 50ms up to 1.8 seconds at the time of the request

ESXi6 DC VM to ESXi DC VM on the same host, 10 Gb DSwitch

ESXi6 DC VM to ESXi DC VMS on different host, 10 Gb DSwitch

< 50ms

DC - DC physical physical

ESXi5.5/6.0 DC ESXi5.5/6.0 DC on 1 GB network VM VM (Ping is < 1ms, copying files is > 100MB / s)

I've checked package drops with esxtop with view network, no packet drops.

I used the following script to the extent that made 10 requests from a user and takes the average time.

The result is coherent fairy.

  • vCenter and PSC HA 6 with high latency

    Hi guys,.

    We have about 10 locations with each a few hosts.

    3 those who are major hubs located in the regions of the North A., Europe and Asia.

    Currently, almost all sites have their own vCenter (5.x - 6).

    I would like to consolidate the vCenters but I read that the PSC is very sensitive in terms of latency.

    I guess that 100ms is the maximum, as well as for long-distance vMotion!

    Between our 3 centres, we have around 200-250 ms latency.

    Latency within a region is about 20-90ms.

    So now I'm not sure if it will work:

    Each hub would have 1 vCenter (or maybe 2 with cluster failover and Ext. SQL DB) manage all of their clusters within the region.

    Each hub would have 2 PSC devices, all in the same SSO domain and site.

    I was hoping to get the good reviews here on how you Landa who.

    Thanks in advance!

    You are there with your latency 100 ms between ssp max. BTW, max latency for long distance vMotion 150ms RTT. These are difficult technical limits, but are we comfortable support based on our own tests. Things would work technically with higher latencies? No doubt. But don't put yourself in a risky position which can prevent you from getting support if there is a problem.

    That said, that many large customers are now consolidated down to an area of SSO by region. It would be great if we could get down to a global domain SSO, but today in vSphere 6.0, we recommend that you really do not go more than 100ms. The longer latency between PSC, more the risk of conflicting changes in the SSO domain. In addition, with a view to performance of the user interface, if you manage multiple vCenters via the improved linked Mode, it will get slower and slower this latency increases.

    We certainly perceive your feedback from customers, and we would like to help our clients for their SSO domains the architect as they see fit. But today, we have guidelines, that we need to work within. I hope this helps!

  • Extremely high latency during the migration of the local data store to data store shared.

    Hi guys I hope you help me. Sorry for my English btw, I'm not native.

    Let's start!

    I have:

    1 vCenter
    1 host
    1 Distributed Switch (with a pg for managing network/IPstorage the esxi)
    1 standard switch (empty)
    1 FreeNAS to provide iSCSI LUNS
    1 Microsoft to provide iSCSI LUNS

    When I try to migrate virtual machines between the warehouses of shared data or data shared at local store, all right. The problem has become when I try to migrate virtual machines from the local to the shared data store. All data stores down (all paths down) and back up and I get this error:

    "Error caused by the /vmfs/volumes/volumenID/VMDirectory/Disk.vmdk file.

    When I try to migrate virtual machines from the local to the FreeNAS iSCSI data store it fails immediately.
    When I do the same local Microsoft iSCSI datastore that it takes a time loooooong to migrate the virtual computer, give it to me even all the paths downwards and uplinks down error but not lacking in migration.

    I'll give you some screenshots to see the errors.

    Thank you very much!

    EDIT: I have extremely high latency notice when I try to migrate from the premises of warehouses of shared data. average 2000ms with peaks of 50,000 (see my response below for more information)

    Finally, I found the solution! The problem is that I have been using E1000E vmnic instead of vmxnet3. I have configured an adapter vmxnet3 and boom! 20 ms in all migration!

    Thank you to all for help, especially Nick_Andreev !

  • VCenter Server (standard) useful with ESXi is free?

    Trying to decide what, if anything, to actually buy VMware.  The free ESXi product license is... enough.  I would really like to central management, backup or read/write capabilities with rcli (piracy without installation - I think I said that correctly).

    My question is this.  There is a VERY big jump in $$$ of the products beforehand essentials range or better (I think that the Standard line is unnecessary).  I currently have 5 VMware servers (2 under Server Linux 2.0 on server newish hardware, each, 2 ESXi 4 server about 4 VM running on old jobs as each House a unique VM (due to higher disk IO) and ESXi 3.5 server running on 32-bit with 1 VM hardware).

    In any case - with a mixture of mission critical production VM and VM little criticism that don't necessary not to live on a San and puff SAN bandwidth, I'm not sure I want to limit myself to 3 physical machines.  It would be probably enough for the next 5 to 10 years, but it would affect my SAN strategies and I have to buy at least 1 or 2 new costly servers.

    So I thought that maybe just get the vCenter Server for centralized management would work.  I always have 2 or 3 more enjoyable new servers ESXi 4 on the San with mission critical servers, while continuing to have 2-3 of older machines with individual local readers VM (I like to keep virtual for purposes of disaster recovery for) running.

    I can't find any information on knowledge if it would work, and it would offer benefits etc..

    You cannot add free ESXi to vCenter. Adding a host requires the inside the host vCenter Agent license.

    Sorry about that.

    I have a brand new hp dl380 G6 with 2 xeon x 5560 server and 48 GB of ram ddr, it is used in combination with a fiber of msa 2212 hp san chanel.

    The host runs 36 windows virtual xp with each 1vcpu and 512 MB memory.

    given that we have upgraded to esxi 4 almost al my virtual machines are showing the alarm that the memory usage of comments is raw, some off them show same not the warning, but the symbol of the alarm.

    In the virtual machine overview comments mem % varies between 90% and 68%.

    The host mem is also high, always 537 MB.

    The same takes place of issue with the version of virtual machine 4 and 7, vmwaretools is upgraded to version latsest, even with a new installation of a host appaers problem.

    On the same host, we tested with esxi 3.5, we have not had any warning to all mem % comments has been between 2 and 18%

    the host here for most memory less than 100 MB

  • Advice of external storage for use with ESXi 3.5 (free)

    I'm under ESXi 3.5 (free) on a server with internal storage.  I would buy external storage and switch my VM to it.  The virtual machines that I have running on the server are not used very often, so I don't want to put a lot in it.  Can anyone recommend an external SAN/NAS storage device that would work with ESXi 3.5 (free)?  I'm looking for maybe 500 GB - 1 TB connected to the network via Ethernet.

    Less than the price of Iomega devices (the ~ $300 model) are sold to a group of work so not really high performance. If you find that this performance was not acceptable, you'd have no way to improve the system.

    I would like to use your existing NAS NFS features. If this does not work out, you can always go for something with more umph.

    If it is a lab test the Iomega should be fine. If it has an environment that can grow in size requirements and performance over time, you might want to try to build a more powerful Openfiler SAN/NAS.

    First try your existing infrastructure.

  • Alignment of disc with ESXi

    Hello

    One of my colleagues spoke to strengthen certain storage performance by aligning vmfs with the underlying storage and higher vm disks. However, he sent me it describes some fdisking in the service console. It already looks like a hard thing to do, but my question is, how can align the disk with ESXi. There is no real service console and using the Tech mode is not really supported. Does anyone have experience with disc alignment in ESXi? Is it really necessary or will it help?

    TIA

    Timothy

    From ESX 3.0 drives are already alligened. So the ESX 3i

    disks (VMFS volumes) are already lined up. Make sure that your VM disk are

    aligned and you should be fine.

    Doc for sale listed by Troy should help you determine how to align the drive of the guest operating system. My advice would bring just the data disk not the OS.

  • LDAP with ssl

    Hello Experts,

    I just tried to set up a LDAP authentication with the built-in feature of the apex.

    Because I wasn't able to make it work, I tried to set up my own LDAP authentication scheme with the following code:

    create or replace package body "PKG_AUTH" is
    function FUNCTION_LDAP_1( P_PASSWORD IN VARCHAR2, P_USERNAME IN VARCHAR2 ) return BOOLEAN

    as
         p_dn varchar2(128) := 'cn=' || p_username || ',ou=XX,ou=YY,ou=ZZ,o=data';
         p_ldap_host varchar2(128) := 'ServerHostName';
         p_ldap_port number := <PORT>;
         l_retval pls_integer;
         l_retval2 pls_integer;
         l_session dbms_ldap.session;
    begin
      l_retval := -1;
         dbms_ldap.use_exception := TRUE;
         begin
             l_session := dbms_ldap.init( p_ldap_host, p_ldap_port );                -- Seems to work fine if i comment the next two lines. So I think the I'm able to contact the LDAP server.
             l_retval := dbms_ldap.simple_bind_s( l_session, p_dn, p_password );    -- if I execut this line, I get the error: "ORA-31202: DBMS_LDAP: LDAP-Client-/Server-Fehler: Can't contact LDAP server"
             l_retval2 := dbms_ldap.unbind_s( l_session );
             return true;
             exception when others then
                   l_retval2 := dbms_ldap.unbind_s( l_session );
                   APEX_DEBUG_MESSAGE.ENABLE_DEBUG_MESSAGES(p_level => 3);
                   APEX_DEBUG_MESSAGE.LOG_MESSAGE(
                       p_message => 'l_retval: ' || l_retval || dbms_utility.format_error_stack|| ' <|> ' || dbms_utility.format_error_backtrace,
                       p_level => 1 );
             return false;
        end;
        exception when others then
        return false;
    end FUNCTION_LDAP_1;

    end "PKG_AUTH";

    I get an error ' LDAP-Client/Server-Fehler: failed to contact the LDAP server.

    To me, it seems that the problem is in the line (please look at the comment in the code above too)

    l_retval := dbms_ldap.simple_bind_s( l_session, p_dn, p_password );

    Additional information:

    • We have defined a All-Open-Rule to our ACL.
    • On the front end, I get a Message "Invalid Credientials" (or something similar)
    • Request Express 4.2.3.00.08
    • I can connect to the LDAP with the code in the following thrad: Ping in PL SQL function
      That's a reason more to my guess that I don't have a problem "cannot contact the LDAP server."
    • I'm confused (due to this error)

    • I think that we have not implemented a portfolio for our LDAP server. Do I really need?
      On APEX_LDAP , they say, you need just a portfolio if you use "SSL with one-way authentication" (APEX_LDAP. AUTHENTICATE = > parameter:p_use_ssl)
      But now the problem seems to have originated elsewhere. I I'm wrong?

    Appreciate any help!

    Ok. Use build you - in ldap auth. schme?

    No. I still cannot do its job. I can connect using the following code:

    declare
       l_ldapHost VARCHAR2(100) := 'your.ad.domain';
       l_ldapPort NUMBER := 636; -- set your SSL port
       walletPassword VARCHAR2(30) := 'wallet_password';

       l_retval      pls_integer;
       l_session     dbms_ldap.session;

    begin
          l_retval                := -1;

          dbms_ldap.use_exception := TRUE;

          l_session := dbms_ldap.init(l_ldapHost, l_ldapPort);

          l_retval := dbms_ldap.open_ssl (l_session, 'file:/etc/oracle/wallets', walletPassword, 2);

          l_retval := DBMS_LDAP.simple_bind_s(l_session, :p_username, :p_password);

          dbms_output.put_line(l_retval);
    DBMS_LDAP.UNBIND_S(l_session);
    end;

    You can use custom authentication.

    But you must install the portfolio and add your domain root certificate to trusted certificates. And don't forget to change l_ldapHost, l_ldapPort, walletPassword, p_username, p_password to your values.

    But why offer apex to a system of authorisation: built-in ldap where you can use ssl, and on the other hand they do not offer an opportunity to set a path to a portfolio of oracle?

    Do we not have to install the portfolio to a special directory? (If we want to use the built-in schema auth). ?

    See the documentation for APEX 2.4 managing settings for Instance to see how to install portfolio pending of the APEX.

    First of all, I apologize if it's thread is in the wrong section.

    I recently installed ESXi v6.0.0 in VMware Workstation 12.0 trying to familiarize myself with ESXi as I recently graduated and I forgot most of what I learned from the class I took.

    Then, ESXi installed smoothly and was very painless.

    Then, I tried to create a virtual machine. It's when things are messy. I can't understand why, but I don't get any network connectivity after obtaining a DHCP address to all within the virtual machine, in addition to being able to ping the host ESXi itself.
