HL - DT - ST DVD +-RW GWA4164B drive CD-ROM and others do not recognize

1.) my dell system: XPS 400

2.) problem device: HL-DT-ST DVD +-RW GWA4164B CD / DVD Drive

3.) my operating system: Windows XP Media Center

4.) problem: D: My reader will not recognize the CD-ROM or CD - R.  My player will recognize DVD, write to blank DVDs and recognize audio CD

My computer is now out of warranty and I searched the forum to see if anyone could answer to my problem.  My computer won't burn CD - R Recordable Virgin.  Windows Media Player and iTunes both say to insert a CD, but a blank CD is already in the drive.  I tried FUJIFILM CD - r, Office Depot CD - Rs, Sony CD - r and TDK CD - r and nothing.  Does not recognize them.  I can; However, burn to DVD-r blank, which are branded Sony.  The main reason why I want to get this work of D: drive is to begin studying for the CPA exam.  I am installing a review of CPA (CD-ROM) software which is brand new, but my computer does not recognize the drive.  I can't live without burning CD - r, but I need to install this software.  I tried to do it manually and will start---> Run---> type D:\Setup.exe and everything that is ours is insert a cd in the drive, but the installation disc is in the drive.  There is obviously something wrong with the drive, and I think in authorized service center of Dell.  I just thought that someone could help me until I pay for the repair and the new part.

Thank you!

    Dear Forum,

The program runs but updates always fail and when I look at general specifications the serial number, product name, number of product, microprocessors, system memory, motherboard, bios system, drive hard (s), and optical drive (s) are all empty. Interestingly, it recognizes the device to display (s) as being mobile intel (R) HD graphics and current resolution of 1366 x 768 and refresh rate 60.

  • Backup and restore does not recognize my external HARD drive.

When I try to use the ms backup and restore it only recogniza my external HARD drive.

Is that possible reinstall or repair?

    Hello daniloalvesmaciel,

Thanks for posting on the Microsoft answers Forum.

First of all, I could check and see if the hard drive is listed on the Windows 7 Compatibility Center. Clickhere for a link to the Compatibility Center. If it's on the Compatibility Center, then check out the web site of the manufacturer for updates or drivers.

Then check if you see the external hard drive in the Device Manager.
    To check these options:

    1. click on the Start button to display the Start Menu , then selectControl Panel .
    2. the Control Panel window opens.
Now click system and security from this window.
    3 Scrollfor Device Manager.
    4. click on the Device Manager.
    5. to view material click on any category and the associated list of installed hardware. For example. Click on hard drives.
Right click on the external hard drive. You can see the different options likeUpdate driver software, disable, uninstall and properties etc.
    6. click on Properties to display the details of the hardware. Click theDriver tab , to view the details of device driver.
    7. then on the software update driver to check and see if you have the latest drivers.

Then check again and see if you can save on the external hard drive.

If this is not the case, try to map a drive to the external drive. Can you back up now.

Please respond and take stock of your problem.

    DUS21, welcome to the forum.

The first thing I suggest is running your antivirus program for ensuring that there is no virus.  If there is none, you should backup your personal data and perform a System Recovery.  When a computer starts to have problems, it is usually due to a glitch.  The best way to solve the problem is to do a system restore.  Returns your computer in its original configuration.  It runs a lot faster once it is completed.  I do one at least once a year.  I love the feel of a new computer without problem.

Please click on the Thumbs up button '+' if I helped you and click on "Accept as Solution" If your problem is resolved.

There are 2 disks of Vista: one for 32-bit operating system, and one for 64-bit operating system.

If install a cleaning is required with a good DVD of Vista (not HP, Dell recovery disks):

Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.

It is perhaps as simple as changing the jumper on CS (Cable Select).
