host ESXi 4.1 to 5.5 upgrade

Hi all, hope this helps.

I installed a new 5.5 vcenter and always running a vcenter 4.1, running both at the same time, I have migrated a crowd of 4.1 through to my platform of 5.5 and want to update the host to 5.5 (I have a license), my question is, will this affect my other storage on the san, other hosts on 4.1 run here , and I do not wish to upgrade this one 5.5 if it will affect the other storage on the old vcenter (things always work) he seem quite simple to do, but not sure about that something and can not afford to make the mistake with the old esx environment...

You can upgrade the host ESXi 4.1 managed by vCenter 5.5 without problems. For more safety, unplug the host HBA when you perform the upgrade if you use CF. If I understand correctly, both the upgrade to 5.5 ESXi and ESXi 4.1 hosts existing use same data warehouses. The only drawback I see is after the upgrade to 5.5 ESXi host, do not improve data warehouses of VMFS3 to VMFS5 so as not to affect the environment 4.1 existing.

  • The upgrade to vCenter Server 5 with a view Server 4.6 on a host ESXi 4.1

We have guests ESX and ESXi 4.1 and just got a new host ESXi 5. We must now be upgraded vCetner to version 5 server in order to manage the new host. I know 5 4.1 manage vCenter hosts but do I need to be wary when it comes to the host that maintains the virtual computers view or the view Server 4.6 VM itself?

According to the comapbility matrix View 4.6 is not supported under vSphere or vCenter 5.

  • How can I reinstall / store data recovery an ESXi 4.1 lost during an upgrade to 5.5?

I was running a host of ESXi 4.1 on a Dell T110 II with two RAID, a managed arrays by the controller integrated RAID that contained the system of ESXi and a small data store (channel) and the other controlled by a 6405e Adaptec controller which contained my main data store (BunkerHill). In the process of upgrading from 4.1 to ESXi 5.5, I forgot to include the drivers for the Adaptec 6405e controller and even if the upgrade of the host, he did not see the BunkerHill data store.

I downloaded and installed the VIB for the controller 6405e and after restart the host ESXi 5.5 shows the Adaptec RAID under storage adapters, but the BunkerHill data store is still not visible and all virtual machines guests appearing on this show as unknown in the inventory. The channel data store and two invited VMS it holds are visible. Below a part of the kernel log is filtered on the RAID controller device name.

I would like to get the recognizable BunkerHill data store before continuing the upgrade and would be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction (KB article, display, etc. that explains what I do). I need to reinstall 4.1 on the work of RAID (ESXi 5.5 and channel data bank) and then trying to reconnect the main data store, or are there changes I can do from the console to manually get the market things?

    Tips are appreciated,

    Thank you

  • ESXi 5.1 to 5.5 upgrade

    Hi all

I intend to spend any esxi 5.1 5.1 to our newly built 5.5 vCenter vCenter army.

We not have distributed switches, SRM, Vmware view etc...
Not also concerned historical data in vCenter 5.1

What is the best way to do it?

    Here is my planned approach

    • Create new cluster on vCenter 5.5 that will even
      as cluster in vCenter 5.1.
    • Disconnect hosts in vCenter 5.1 and register
      ESXi host to vCenter 5.5
    • I guess when I do this standard will all be
always available as it is esxi host specific not vcenter.
    • We have 5 guests clustered, so I intend to
remove a host both the cluster and esxi 5.1 to 5.5 upgrade using Update Manager
      5.5 the new vCenter.
    • Given that I don't update facility, I'm not sure will
switch support will be always there after upgrade. We use iscsi for storage
and it uses a standard switch. If it is not available I can recreate after upgrade.
    • Anything that suggests on pit fall that I need attention in this plan, please suggest.

    Thank you...

I did these migrations several times in the past and that you are having problems.

What I usually do in such cases is to:

    • Disable HA in two groups (the current/old as well as new)
    • Make sure you of EVC is configured correctly to the new cluster (if necessary)
    • disconnect and remove all hosts (one by one) from the old server vCenter Server and add them to the new cluster
    • configure settings like HA cluster, DRS...
    • Once everything works as expected begin the upgrade of the host

Be sure to reconfigure your backup software (and any other 3rd party software and Add-ons) after migrating to the new vCenter Server hosts.

  • New host ESXi licensing

    Hi guys,.

I am currently working on a workflow for the provision of new hosts ESXi from scratch. Unfortunately, I glued on the new VMWare licensing to a host. I wanted to do this with a script element:

    Entry:

    Host (VC: HostSystem)

    License (String)

    Code:

    Host.configManager. licenseManager. licenseAssignmentManager.updateAssignedLicense (Host.id, license, null);

Unfortunately, this returns an error indicating licenseManager is null.

Anyone know how to set the new licenseManager on the host or license in another way?

    Thank you

    Kamil

OK, I got it myself. Instead of approaching licenseManager thanks Host.configManager I used instead of the VC:SdkConnection variable.

    Entry:

    Host (VC:HostSystem)

    SDK (VC:SdkConnection)

    LicenseKey (String)

    Code:

    SDK.licenseManager.licenseAssignmentManager.updateAssignedLicense (Host.id, LicenseKey, null);

    This works perfectly!

  • VShield service Manager installation and vShield app to the same host ESXi

Hello, I'm planning on vCloud Director assessment in a laboratory with only a single ESXi host.  When I try to install the app vShield service I get the following warning: do not install on a host or a cluster where the VC or the vShield Manager resides. This can cause network problems. The following IP address must be a unique IP address assigned to this unit of App vShield. Please do not use an IP address that is assigned to another machine, including the VC, vShield Manager or any ESX host. Using an incorrect IP address you will need to uninstall and reinstall App vShield on this host. My question is: is it is absolutely impossible to install vShield manager on the same host ESXi as the vShield Manager resides?  Or is it just a bad practice?  What are the ramifications of installing?

It is a general practice to separate management and resources. What you see is just a warning. When there are very fewer resources available you can do. Make sure that you exclude from the required VM by referring to this post

  • Restore directly to a host ESXi with VMware Data Protection (WTP)

Can I use VMware Data Protection restore directly to a host ESXi, or do I have to have vCenter Server running? (If the virtual machine, I am trying to restore is vCenter Server itself, then it won't work unless I can restore to a host ESXi directly without using vCenter Server...)

You don't need a vCenter running for the restoration of emergency (directly to the host).

You can also use this direct restore to restore a vCenter to a host. I think this is the main reason that this feature was developed

Edit: More on it in vSphere Direct-to-Host Data Protection's emergency recovery. VMware vSphere Blog - VMware Blogs

  • New host ESXi 5.1 in DMZ - cannot connect through vCenter Client or web, but can via SSH, if I have activated

We have a simple DMZ where I set up a host running ESXi 5.1. I have another windows server in the DMZ subnet and I can load the new ESXi her host's web site. From my PC in our LAN I can not pull the top web interface 5.1 ESXi or connect via vSphere Client. If I enable SSH on the new host, can I use Putty to connect to the new host ESXi from my PC in LAN. I watched the event logs in our firewall and nothing seems to be blocked. I guess that the problem is related to a value or a firewall setting in ESXi 5.1 but I don't know. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you

    -Kevin

Just a thought. Why don't run you the ESXi host in your internal network management and only virtual machines in the DMZ? Would make the ESXi host management even more secure, and you wouldn't have to open Firewall ports.

  • Three hosts ESXi and two Clusters VSA

Is it possible / is there a problem with it?  I know a single cluster VSA is designed to work with two or three nodes, but is it possible to have two clusters VSA on three nodes (one of the three nodes would be two VSA groups on both nodes at the same time).  I know there is a limitation that requires an instance of vCenter by VSA cluster, but I was unable to find mention of this type of configuration.

    Thank you.

When the VSA cluster is created, a single VSA appliance is installed on each host ESXi (2 or 3 ESXi hosts) of the VSA cluster.  The VSA appliance uses local storage of the ESXi server. If you try to create an another cluster of VSA, it won't use an ESXi server that is already a member of a cluster of VSA.  In other words, a single VSA device can be installed on a server ESXi.

    Hello

I have two hosts ESXI 4.1 with VSphere Essentials for VCenter license. I'm not able to move the virtual machine to one ESXI host to another (power off). It is not supported with VSphere Essentials license? Data warehouses can be shared between the two ESXI hosts?

What is the size of your virtual machine, what is the speed of the network and how your local storage looks like? Using RAID? How many disks and RAID level? You have a battery attached to the RAID controller write buffer cache?

The waiting period does not necessarily mean the tasks does not work. Often it is only a delay in the vCenter Server GUI, but the process is still running and you just need to be patient. You see the files being created on the target data store?

You don't need a video, its very simple.

    1. simply download: upgrade-from-ESX4.0-to-4.1.0-0.0.260247-release.zip

    2 use VUM guests 4.0 to 4.1.

In addition, you can do command line...

    1. download: pre-upgrade-from-ESX4.0-to-4.1.0-0.0.260247-release.zip

  • Restart host ESXi 4.0 with vCenter 4.0 as a virtual machine

I have two hosts ESXi 4.0:

    1. the host 1 has vCenter 4.0 installed as a virtual machine with a VMware data recovery VM and some other virtual machines.

2 host 2 has a number of virtual machines.

I want to restart the first host and level to ESXi 4.0 Update 1 - I won't stop VMs on host 2, and I want to improve it yet.

My plan is to stop all VMs on host 1 letting the vCenter VM until the last. I have then place my host in maintenance mode and run the host update application to install the update which will then require a restart of course. Once restarted, I'll connect to host 1 directly by using the vSphere client and restart the VM vCenter. I will then restart all my other virtual machines.

Is this sound OK? VCenter will restart Fortunately?

You can also power off the vCenter, register on the other (ESX) If you have the shared storage and try again.

Be sure only to say I_moved about the question that appear when you turn on the virtual computer.
