Host profile in vSphere 6 - requirements of Maintenance Mode

I was instructed to check the profiles of the vSphere host 6.  The main reason why we don't use them in our environment v5.5 is because when you apply the profile of the host a host to perform a restoration, regardless of change in a significant way, there must be a maintenance of the host mode.  This poses an administrative challenge in my environment.

So, I have been instructed to read that vSphere 6 had updated Host Profiles to demand maintenance mode only if required by the properties defined by the profile of specified host.  I think OK, now trivial changes like adding that a group of ports for a vSwitch will not require the host to be maintenance mode trying to "clean up" the host with a profile of the host that makes this type of low level change.  Unfortunately, I still get the error "host must be in before maintenance mode a host profile can be applied to him" whenever I try to apply a profile of the host to a host that is in non-compliance, no matter how tiny change.

Everyone knows this?  I have something misconfigured?

vSphere 6: updates to Host Profiles - VMware vSphere Blog - VMware Blogs

OK I thought about it.  This new feature to Host Profiles fact exist, but it only exists in the Web Client vSphere.  The vSphere client c# don't has not been updated to behave this way, it always requires a host to be in the mode of maintenance for all corrections.

Time to start using the web client more.  = S

    Also, by using "get-vmhost" twice is redundant since you have channeled from get-vmhost: "E = { get-vmhost $_ |}". Get-vievent ".

However, your order will be to return the entire event object and look like:

    Name                                    Event

    ----                                    -----

    host {VMware.Vim.EnteredMaintenanceModeEv...

    You can try below instead:

    Get-VMHost |? {$_. ConnectionState-match 'Maintenance'} | Select Name, @{N = 'Time put in MaintMode'; E={($_ | Get-VIEvent |? {$_. FullFormattedMessage-like"* entered maintenance mode *"} (). " Createduserid}}

But it can still recover multiple events, so a way to get only the last event and time is below:

    Get-VMHost |? {$_. ConnectionState-match 'Maintenance'} | Select Name, @{N = 'Time put in MaintMode'; E={($_ | Get-VIEvent |? {$_. {"FullFormattedMessage-like" * entered maintenance mode * "} | toplayer-last 1). Createduserid}}

  • How to configure the local and logging remotely using the host profiles, not with advance options

    Help, please

    Hello

Local and remote syslog feature can be configured for a cluster of similar hosts using the host profiles.

For more information, see guide installation and Set Up Syslog of the section of the Interface of host profiles in vSphere Installation.

Connect the Server vCenter by using the vSphere Client.

    Click home.

Under the administration section, click host profiles.

Create a new profile or modify an existing profile.

In the Edit Profile dialog box, set one or more of the five configuration options.

If you configured using esxcli or advanced syslog configuration options and this has captured a host of reference, 5 configuration options are already visible in the Advanced Configuration option section.

If syslog has not been previously configured, right-click the section of Advanced Configuration options and add a profile for each of the five configuration options.

Save the profile and assign it to the hosts.

  • Maintenance mode that is required to scan?

Our best practices has always been to put the hosts in maintenance first mode, and then analyze the updates with the Update Manager. We seek to implement scheduled scans, and the only thing stopping us is our practice of the mode of maintenance in advance. Is this necessary? Or are we able to scan hosts for production with active virtual machines safely?

Yes, you can scan the hosts while they have running VMs. Maintenance mode is not necessary for this.

You use the vCLI or PowerCLI?  In general, you see this message with free ESXi license edition.  This edition is limited to read-only with vCLI/PowerCLI operations, so you should put the host in maintenance with the vSphere client mode.

  • Questions about maintenance mode

I have some curious (probably dumb) questions on the service mode (esxi worm 51).

    • What is exactly?
    • What happens if you run the patch similar to ' esxcli software vib /vmfs/volumes/datastore/patch_zipfile.zip d install "without putting it in maintenance mode?
    • What happens if you put maintainece mode, install the patch, and then out of maintenance mode before restart? The reason behind this is so that the virtual machines will autostart.

These are just curious of rhetorical questions.

    Thank you!

    Arch

All the maintenance mode has really is sure no VMs are running. In an environment of DRS, VM will migrate automatically away, basically saying maintenance mode "do not put a machine virtual here, is about to have some work." Without the DRS maintenance mode will fail and advise you to move the virtual machines yourself.

Some patches require no maintenance mode and install fine. Those who demand the it will error and refused to apply without maintenance mode.

In the third scenario, the machines will be autostart

  • Auto Deploy, host profile and answer files

    Hello

I'm busy trying to learn a little more about Auto deploy. I'm trying to figure out what is the best practice when it comes to the part host profiles of the automatic process of deploy. The way I see there are two ways to use host profiles.

    (1) for each host, I create a separate host profile and create necessary deployment rules, one rule per host.

    (2) I create a host profile and only one rule of deployment and then use the response file option to create the unique settings of the host.

I've set up two option, option 2 seems less reliable while option 1 works every time. So my main question is what is the recommended method to use profiles to host with Auto deploy.

    Thank you

    Hello

It is usually done through your supplied option 2.

Create a profile from a host of reference and apply this profile to a host or a cluster.  Usually a cluster or however you define your deployment rules.  Update of the personalization of the host, then remove it from maintenance mode.

  • Help with Host Profiles and necessary PowerCLI

    Hello

I have 2 questions about using PowerCLI for edit vSphere Host Profiles:

    (1) how can I clone a host profile, using PowerCLI?

    (2) how can I change the host profiles, using PowerCLI, update these settings?
    (a) name of host - DNS configuration - configuration networking
    (b) setting up authentication - setup of Active Directory - domain name

    Thank you!

    Kind regards
    Harold

    (1) there, in the current version no cmldets to clone a hostprofile.

But you can use the API. Something like that

    $hostProfileName = "MyProfile" $prof = Get-VMHostProfile -Name $hostProfileName

    $profMgr = Get-View HostProfileManager
    $spec = New-Object VMware.Vim.HostProfileCompleteConfigSpec $spec.Annotation = $prof.ExtensionData.Config.Annotation$spec.ApplyProfile = $prof.ExtensionData.Config.ApplyProfile$spec.CustomComplyProfile = $prof.ExtensionData.Config.CustomComplyProfile$spec.DisabledExpressionList = $prof.ExtensionData.Config.DisabledExpressionList$spec.Enabled = $prof.ExtensionData.Config.Enabled$spec.Name = $prof.ExtensionData.Config.Name + " - COPY"
    $profMgr.CreateProfile($spec)

    (2) changing the settings in hostprofiles can be done, but the ILO requires a thorough knowledge of the workings of

  • where is the option Net.UseHwTSO host profile?

I have a host profile I want to apply to a host, but there are some issues that need to be ironed out. I get the error of compliance "Net.UseHwTSO options have been modified by their default values expected", but I can't find Net.UseHwTSO in the tree of the policy of home options. If I could, I would just disable the policy for him. Or, maybe I could add a customization because only two machines have this different from others. No idea how to find it?

    vCenter Server 5.1, 5.1 ESXi

OK, now I thought to myself. I decided to create a separate for machines with this problem profile (because they also have other issues).

Change the profile of the host (with vSphere client): right-click right the advanced configuration option > choose Add profile > expand the new profile option created > click Advanced option and choose to set up a permanent option in the menu drop-down (see the other options if you don't want to do it this way) > enter the name of the option as specified in the option name and the value in the value box. To find out what should be the value, look at the configuration options of the non-compliant host.

  • How to upgrade vcenter host when the host needs to be in maintenance mode

Hi, I have a host 5.5 with 3 VMs (2 production servers and 1 Server vcenter). Now I see for updating the host using vcenter Update Manager documentation is quite simple. The thing I don't understand until you can fix, the esx host must be in maintenance mode, which means no VMs, including the vcenter server, which is the only way you can do a right click on the host and choose restore. Now how can I fix if the server is in maintenance mode and my vcenter server is down?

I have the vsphere client installed on my laptop, version 5.5, but him, I did not have the remediation option. How can I put my 5.5 esxi host?

    Thank you

With only one host in place and vCenter Server as a virtual machine running on this host, you cannot use Update Manager. Your options are either interactively update the host using a CD or update patch / the host from the command line using esxcli.

  • ESX to ESXi using host profiles

I was wondering if anyone has tried to use the host profiles to facilitate the migration?

That is to say take a profile of a host ESX and then install ESXi and then apply the profile of the host that you just do to this host?

    I think it should work.

    Stephen

Note also that Host profile does not apply tweaks, like frames.

And that vSphere 5 you can upgrade an ESX 4.x (but it have a previous update to 3.x) to ESXi 5 with most of its parameters

  • Host profiles

    Hello

are host profiles associated with specific licenses for vSphere? It includes with vSphere advanced?

    host profiles?

Profiles of the host is a characteristic of the level Enterprise Plus license - http://www.vmware.com/products/vsphere/buy/editions_comparison.html.

Most of the options that you configure in the host profiles comes the various screens in the Configuration screen.  There is not just a window that exposes all of the options that you can configure.
