How can I change how my favorites are read when I click on the "Bookmarks" icon on my macbook?

I used Firefox on my PC for decades and organize bookmarks is a breeze, but I'm not finding it so easy on my mac. I put the most much of my favorites into folders thinks that might help to clean the 'main signet' screen, but all the bookmarks still show in a long list with folders inside. I would just have those who are NOT in the folders are displayed on the main screen, because they are the ones I use the most, and it allows me to save a click does not have to go in a folder. Alternatively, if I can't get there, I would like to move the files up, but they won't stay when I drag them. The ability to "organize" old I used to was so easy, what I'm missing here?

I don't know how I got the URL in the files the first time, but I deleted the all out records and dragged them went back into the records in view of the library and it worked. Thank you!
