I want to connect my computers families so I can share music and pictures they take... but when I click to join their files, it asks me the username and password... is something that someone had put in place or is it in your computer?

Hello

1. are you using cable or wireless network?

2 are all computers that are running Windows 7 on the network?

What version of the operating system Windows am I running?

No, Windows does not let you to set passwords that limit access to shared folders. However, if you are not on a domain, you can limit network access to the Public folder by turning password protected sharing or disable. This allows only people with a user account and the password for your computer to access the Public folder over the network.

Whether you are on a domain or not, you can limit access to other folders by choosing to share only with specific people, grant share permissions. Permissions can be granted to an individual or a group of users on the same network, allowing them to access your shared folders. You can also set the level of access, allowing people to just open shared files, or also to change, create, or delete. For more information, see

  • How can I tell if another computer on my network has access to my files?

All of a sudden, there is what looks like a folder on my desktop, with different files into it that belonged to someone who had direct access to my laptop up until 2 days ago, but has since been locked out of it (all passwords are changed). It seems that he was able to access my laptop through our wireless home network, and I would like to be able to prove it's him. Can I do this? I have Vista on my laptop, and it has XP.

    Hello BarbiMcBride,

I suggest looking at the answer in this thread by SpiritX:
It explains the ways you can tell if someone accesses your computer remotely or not.
You can also disable file and printer sharing:
If you want to hide your computer from other computers on your network you can disable it by following these instructions:

  • another computer on your network is using your computer - Hack suspicion - ip address through DHCP lease renewal. Help, please

    Hello fellow Mac users...

Today, while using, Firefox A message appeared on my screen: another computer on your network is using the ip address of your computer.

Now, I am 100% sure that my phone was turned off when it happened. And I have a password on my wifi connection.

I panicked because no one should have access to my network or my IP address. Immediately, I turned off my modem and turned off the wifi on my mac.

Later, I went to renew the DHCP lease.

    My question is this:

Could it be, in theory, based on the message system I (another computer on your network is using the ip address of your computer) the IP address was stolen (for lack of a better word) by a remote user, which is not in my physical neighborhood that is resident in another city or even country?

If so, then I did the right thing by closing my Modem? And later on the DHCP lease renewal? About 20-30 minutes past until what I actually renewed the DHCP lease. It, in theory, could have too late to do (assuming that a malicious user has chosen to masquerade himself with my IP address)?

    Thank you all very much!

Suggestions - idea short of dumping in the trash (setting fire to him or by running a truck, ect...) to clean this thing would be GREATLY appreciated...

The best thing you can do with a used computer that gave you is to access the recovery partition and reinstall the default unit. Most of the laptops brand will have a reserved recovery Partition built into the main HARD disk that can be used to restore the computer to right-of-factory default. Usually activated by touching a certain key during the boot process or by using the software provided by the computer manufacturer.

Dell uses Ctrl + F11 at the Dell logo screen to initiate the restore process. HP uses a program in Windows 7, called Manager of recovery. Your system may vary depending on the manufacturer.

Don't forget to get all documents (including images) and any other personal information that you want to keep. Several key software product can be recovered with the Belarc Advisor before the restore, but you will need to locate the diskettes (CD/DVD, ISOs or exe) installation for each piece of software.

  • How can I connect to the computer without the administrator password?

Original title: my daughter locked her computer and can't remember the password.

My daughter has locked her computer and can't remember the password. I'm trying to unlock the computer. The computer is running Windows 7

It is always ask a password :(

You did not say it, but it probably means that your daughter has changed her password and can not remember what she changed. This is why an alternative admin account is absolutely essential. You can get out of this situation as follows:

    1. Set your BIOS so that it uses the DVD drive as its primary boot device.
    2. Start the computer with your Windows 7 repair CD.
    3. Press a key when prompted to boot from the DVD.
    4. Select 'PC Repair' in the menu.
    5. Select 'Repair' when prompted.
    6. When you are prompted, select System Restore.
    7. Configure Windows to a point before you changed the password.
And since you probably do not burn a CD to repair Windows 7 either (which is absolutely essential for people to maintain their own PC), here's how to get one:
    • Burn it on another computer.
    • Borrow one from a friend.
    • Purchase one here: http://systemdiscs.com/
It takes only three minutes to burn a via the control panel / backup and restore.
  • I can't connect to another computer on my home network

I can't connect to my desktop PC to my laptop on my home network. Until a few weeks ago, I had no problem.

    • There are several disks on the desktop, none of which is available.
    • Both devices are running Windows 7 Ultimate.
    • I can connect to my laptop from my desktop but not the reverse.

The Network Diagnostics tool tells me that my laptop seems to be configured correctly. The message is "Windows cannot communicate with the device or resource" followed by the name of the desktop in parentheses.

I use Norton 360 (completely up to date) on each device and I checked the firewall on both settings. Remote connection is not available, no more, even if it is allowed on the desktop.

I hope you can provide a solution. If any additional information is needed, please let me know.

  • How to import bookmarks from another computer on the network?

I have an old computer that has firefox on it with a large number of bookmarks. I want to import the bookmarks into this new computer on my home network. How can I do this? It would also be useful if in the course of the transfer bookmarks would get in alphabetical order.

You can export to HTML bookmarks in the Bookmarks window. It's now called "show all bookmarks". The last button on the toolbar in the window is the one that you are using and choose export. You can then save the bookmarks in HTML whenever you want. With the new computer, use the same toolbar button and choose Import and import the HTML file.
