How can I determine why my netbook won't start in Windows XP Home Edition?

I have a netbook Acer Aspire One A0751h multiboot, which recently stopped starting in Windows XP Home (SP3).

I have NOT a CD Windows XP Home OEM (because the netbook does not comes with one).  I can boot from an external USB CD/DVD drive, but this does not help me much because I do not have a Windows XP Home OEM CD.

My boot (GRUB) menu allows me to start in:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (which would be defective, even in safe mode - it crashes after loading the driver for agpCPQ.sys)
  • Windows Vista (loader) (Acer recovery Partition)
  • Ubuntu 11.04 (various kernels - currently 2.6.38 - 11-generic (Natty Narwhal))

If I try to start Windows XP, it hangs up the PC (even in safe mode).

If I boot on the Acer Recovery Partition, I have the options to wipe my system back to factory settings, or move my user data to c:\backup and reinstall Windows (or what is desirable from a distance).

If I boot to Ubuntu, I can mount the Windows Partition to/media/ACER in two clicks.

How do I:

  1. find out why Windows crashes and won't boot (can't connect to the faulty startup? I tried boot logging and impossible to find a newspaper)?
  2. Difficulty of Windows (I've already scanned the drive under Linux to find errors, and he comes clean)?

If I have to, I can back up my content from the boot drive in Ubuntu, but I tell myself that I should be able to fix my Ubuntu system just as easily (SHOULD be the keyword).  Remember, I can access all the files on my computer from Ubuntu.

Help!

EDIT: Note that I JUST found that I can boot from a Windows XP Professional OEM CD and enter a recovery console.  Not that this helps me a lot, I can handle files of Ubuntu.

  • Why the Satellite A100 PSAAN drivers of Windows XP Home edition?

I won't work with vista all the time but Toshiba makes me use all the time because they do not support drivers for Windows XP Home edition. And I have to work with WXP because vista does not work with some programs that I need and that is not good.

I need them immediately and I still ask why the drivers for Windows XP Home edition are not there?

[Edited by: admin on May 6, 2007 14:19]

    Hi Duge

As you update and upgrade are typical in PC world and these processes have priority and are definitely looking to the future. Downgrade still isn't back. It is also important but has no priority as upgrade.

I assume that upgrade supported for all mobile phones capable of Vista is not yet complete. I'm pretty sure that new notebook will build for Windows XP Home Edition, but it may take a little time. Be patient. You can also view other topics on this technical forum. You will find lots of useful information about OS downgrade.

    Bye and good luck!

  • Where can I find the full list of the features of Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional

Could you please direct me to the Microsoft Documents where I can find detailed specifications and characteristics of the two operating systems:

    (1) Windows XP Home Edition

    (2) Windows XP Professional Edition

    Thank you

    Hello Roman

Thanks for the clarification on the "new computer".

If, as you say, the card mother and any other material is compatible XP then by all means install Windows XP on this machine. As you said you "my idea is to get the XP and keep as long as possible, even after support ceased in 2014, because I like it better than any other operating system." You have been made aware of possible problems concerning the lack of support and you are ready to accept those. The only problem is to get a copy of Windows XP from a reliable source. Unfortunately, I can't help you with that. Personally, I prefer to get my software direct from the manufacturer or by a reliable retailer. As no other retailer has copies of Windows XP you are, unfortunately, has left the search for credible resource on the web.

My note to the subject of sticking with Windows 7 or 8 on your new computer has been in regards to your initial comment to a "new computer". I have two computers that are running Windows 7 and Windows 8, but then again maybe I need the additional machines and you do not have.

I have to admit that Windows XP is a great operating system, and to be honest, I also use it on a virtual machine on one of my PC. However it is more for support reasons than the generalization on my part.

Windows 7 get some getting used to, but I found it a usable operating system. Windows 8, however, is an altogether different beast. You love or hate it and judging by the comments on the Microsoft forums many people hate everything simply. Yet once I used it since the first beta of the operating system, so I'm used to it.

I agree with voluntary J on Windows XP Mode. This is useful if you have applications that are not compatible with Windows 7. However, as you said in your reply to J to volunteer, you must upgrade to Windows 7 Professional. You can run Windows XP on a virtual machine, with, say, Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 (as a free option); However, you should always buy a copy of XP and new Virtual Machines have some restrictions, especially when it comes to certain types of hardware connected to your PC. Maybe your best bet, if you prefer to upgrade would be to use Windows XP from Windows 7 mode.

I hope that you succeed in your quest for a reliable copy of Windows XP

  • How can I put a calendar on my desktop? I have XP Home Edition

Where can I get a calendar for my office? and how he do there?

    Hi Debra Lea,

Thanks for posting that query you in Microsoft Community!

According to the description, you wanted a calendar on the computer Windows XP desktop.

Unfortunately, we do not have a Microsoft application or a program that allows you to create calendar on the desktop. However, there are different gadgets available in a later version of the operating system as: Windows Vista & Windows 7.

You can use your favorite search engine to find a program or a third-party application for the same.

It is not yet running, then try the "run as Administrator" privilege level as well check box and see if that helps.

How can I determine if I have firefox 64-bit?

    Hello

I had a look on the details of the user agent for your version of Firefox, and it indicates that you are using a 64-bit version of Windows, but Firefox makes use of a subsystem called WoW64, which allows him to run a 32-bit version of the software as Firefox.

There are currently no 64 bit version of Firefox, but there is a version that is in beta version (you can download it here) and the developer edition of Firefox (which you can download here). Please note that these are not fully completed versions of Firefox you may encounter a couple of issues that would be otherwise corrected before the code skips to the release.

I hope this helps, but if not, please come back here and we can look at another solution for you.
