How can I get my operating system restored?

My laptop (64 bit) crashed while trying to install Windows 10 of a download.

I thought that Norton had the necessary backup to restore.  Not true!

Now, no operating system is recognized.

Do anyone know how I can restore the original Windows 7 Home Premium because it was already on the laptop when buying?

Thank you

Your laptop came with a partition recovery or recovery discs? If your laptop did not come with recovery discs, you created a disaster recovery support when you got the laptop?

If not, have you contacted the manufacturer of your laptop to get recovery media to restore your computer to the previous operating system?

Otherwise you can reinstall Windows (clean) 10

If this does not work, you can use the same installation media to reinstall Windows (also called a new installation of Windows) 10.

  • This will delete all your files, applications and drivers you have installed, apps and customizations from your manufacturer of PC and the changes made to the settings.

  1. On a working PC, go to download the software from the Microsoft Web site.

  2. Download the multimedia authoring tool and then run it.

  3. Select create the installation media for another PC.

  4. Choose a language, edition and architecture (64-bit or 32-bit).

  5. Follow the steps to create installation media, and then click Finish.

  6. Connect the installation media that you created on your PC does not work and then turn it on.

  7. On the initial Setup screen, enter your language and other preferences and select next. If you do not see the configuration screen, your PC can not configured to boot from a drive. See your PC manufacturer's Web site for information on how to change the boot sequence of your PC and then try it again.

  8. Select Install now.

  9. On the box, enter the product key to activate Windows page, enter a product key if you have one. If you have upgraded to Windows 10 free or bought and activated Windows 10 of the Windows store, select Skip and Windows activates automatically later. For more information, see Activation in Windows 10.

  10. On the license terms page, select I accept the license terms (if you agree to them), and then select next.

  11. On the type of installation do you want? page, select custom.

  12. On the place where you want to install Windows? page, select a partition, select a formatting option (if necessary) and then follow the instructions.

  13. When you are finished formatting, click Next.

  14. Follow the rest of the installation instructions to complete the installation of Windows 10.

  • How can I get the operating system?

My computer broke down the month last because of the material. And I had hardware replaced, but I also lost the operating system. I bought my computer in Toronto last year, but I live in China now, so I transferred to China. The computer is still under warranty. But it will expire on January 4,2014. An agent in China told me that I could not order the CD for operating system just because the computer has not bought in China. Can someone help me with the problem?

    Raiden99

Each Dell laptop comes with a recovery of the OS disk and even discs for re-installation of the drivers. If you have lost the CD, download Ubuntu Linux or if you have something to spend, you can buy Windows 7/8 on your choice. In order for the features, Windows 8 and Windows 7 compatibility.

Unfortunately this is more true. All (not just Dell) computers sold today are supplied without drives. Tablets, ultralight aircraft and some laptops don't even have optical drives. If you must reinstall windows there are several options - using the recovery Partition or Images of system or to order discs from windows or usb thumb drive of the manufacturer, if you are still under warranty.

  • How can I move my operating system to a new hard drive or other solutions, must be the Media Center

My computer a gateway 815GM Media center PC has become black and start with some gray characters and words back up your data and replace the hard drive is bad. (or similar) My question is how can I move the operating system Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 to a new hard drive.  Since the problem is the hard drive and all the computer a new operating system should not be purchased.  If there is no way to move it is it possible Microsoft send a replacement free of charge, or at least OS with only shipping.  My computer came with it pre-installed, and I have not received the drive with the OS on it.  What can I do?  Thank you for your information.

When you received your entry door, it came with a CD or operating system recovery disc. If you no longer have that (or has not made a recovery disc set a utility included), contact Gateway to buy a set of recovery disks. It is normally fairly cheap. Then install the new hard drive and booting with the recovery disk to restore your computer to the factory State. MS - MVP - Elephant Boy computers - don't panic!

Here's a cool way, go to this site and it will just detect it and say you:

But another way is to press on +R on the keyboard, and run the winver command
When you run it, it will appear a dialog box with your Version of Windows is displayed.

For a little more detail and modern way, hold and press "Pause/break" of the keyboard.  It will appear a box of more modern.  It's also funny that pressing +Break is the trick to show this :)

    Hi hadit

Thanks for posting on Microsoft Answers.

If I can add what Malkeleah and Charles Guard have already suggested.

When you go to choose a screen point of restoration, all the way down, there is a checkbox "Points of restoration show more than 5 days.  This box is checked?  If this isn't the case, please check it out.  Do you see more older restore points?

If you posted this information already and I forgot, I apologize, but I do not see where you mentioned that and I don't remember seeing someone recommend you check this box.

Have you looked at the info/links Malkeleah? There is some great info there on system restore.

  • How can I reinstall the operating system on a new hard drive?

I strongly suspect failure of hard drive on my old computer XPS 420. Data recovery isn't a problem. However, because the way I too lazy to buy a whole new operating system, is possible that I can transfer the installation of Windows Vista on a new hard drive? I told me that Dell will send me an installation disc to do, but how to make a record like this, and is there another way?

I'm thinking of ghosting the HDD on another and the use of the recovery for nuke partition in a new facility, but it would even work?

    Thank you

    SnarfTCat

The simplest method, I prefer to install a replacement hard drive, is to clone the existing hard drive to the new, that will also transfer all applications and programs.

You need an imaging utility, similar to True Image Home 2015.

    http://www.Acronis.com/homecomputing/products/TrueImage

Acronis resize partitions transferred to match the size of the new hard drive.

Hard drive manufacturers, also have their own free cloning software available, but it can be used only with their hard drives.

First, install the new drive as the secondary and the image of the main hard drive in it.

Immediately after the cloning, shut down the system, switch the data cable [SATA port 0] to the new disk, making the new master hard drive and see if the system boots properly.

Start the system with only the new hard drive connected.

Be sure to leave the original drive disconnected, until the new hard drive is working to your satisfaction.

Before cloning a hard drive, make sure that the existing drive has no corruption or virus on it, because they will be transferred to the new hard drive.

It will take a second SATA data cable, there should be a spare connector to SATA power inside the housing.

What is obtaining a disc from the Dell operating system Vista OEM [If Dell still copies of this available media], but you can be out of luck unless you have a warranty from Dell, but it's worth a try to see what is happening.

If you reside in the United States, or the Canada and are the registered owner of the computer, with an active warranty, a disk that contains the operating system specific to your system factory installed can be requested HERE.

Note: Dell may impose a charge for the disc.

If you do not live in the United States, contact the Support from Dell, which is located in your country.

  • How can I cancel the recent system restore I did?

    Nice day.
    I have a point of restoration, dated July 3, 2013, July 4, 2013.
When I opened the system restore this morning he showed a restore point dated July 8, 2013. I restored my computer to date.
After the restoration, when I open again the system restore on July 3 and July 4 point catering was gone and I want to cancel the system restore I did recently but I can't find the undo function.
How can I cancel the recent restoration of the system that I did.

    Original title: System Restore

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/system-restore-frequently-asked-questions
Restore points are saved until the system restore reserves HDD space is filled. As new restore points are created, old ones are deleted. If you disable the Protection System (the feature that creates restore points) on a disk, all restore points are deleted from this drive. When you turn System Protection, new restore points are created.

  • I don't have any windows XP CD. How can I reinstall my operating system?

My computer came with windows XP CD. Now I have problems and want to wipe out my computer and return to the factory settings, can someone help me please. Thank you

    Hello ShirleyDavisSH,

If your computer is suddenly missing from programs and started giving error messages, this can be caused by malicious software.

The the more effective way to ensure that malware has been removed is to perform a new installation of the operating system or a system recovery, as you have previously suggested.  Before that, I recommend you to save the data files you do not want to lose out on a CD/DVD or external hard drive.

That being said, it may be possible to clean malware off the machine.  There are several applications free antivirus that you can download and run on the system.  Alternatively, you can download the free Microsoft anti-virus - Microsoft Security Essentials - at the following link:

    http://www.Microsoft.com/en-us/security_essentials/default.aspx

Let us know if you have any questions.
