How can I make gmail my default email from on my portable win7

I was using a laptop for about 5 years.  Believe it or not, I still don't know how to use gmail as my default for sending the links, messages and stuff on my laptop.  I'm obviously computer illiterate, and every time I want to email hit, or e-mail link, for example, the windows live appears and the format of the email send.  Is it possible to make sure I can use gmail in this way.  I'm so confused.  Whenever I try to search and to try, I can't find a solution.  All suggestions, after we're all done laughing about it... :)

Hi AnnDowdy,

Configure the gmail account in Windows Live mail, Windows Live Mail uses your gmail account to send emails by default
