However, I have the SB installed toolbar, and it has been recently updated, 29/12. I suspect that it is the culprit, if this problem is in fact not caused by an update of Firefox (my tiles have recently been reset on new tabs, and I suspect that Firefox for this problem).

  I am ready to remove the toolbar from the SB, but prefer to keep it (Yes, I admit I'm stupid) If this annoying 'new window = 2 tabs with 'new tab' at the top' would just leave.
